3rd Rock From The Sun and SJWs

I'm watching it for the first time, and this could NEVER make it on the air today. Every episode has at least one great laugh, and many have multiple chuckles, but it is obviously not built for today's long arc narrative in storytelling. Today sitcoms require a fair degree of familiarity with prior events, while past logic is out the window with each season.

The subtle insults, and not so subtle outrageousness from Lithgow, would shut down Twitter. The episode where he talks about having a one night stand with a student's mother has enough triggers to kill the heartiest of Trigglypuffs.

The best aspect is the constant wordplay and word deconstruction. Very clever. Jane Curtin is the most "I'm in!" comedienne of her era.

Lithgow was 50 but still had a good body underneath his tweed suit, and he shows it off. Rawr...daddy!

Kristin Johnston was a serious heroin addict when she was on that show and for years afterwards. I don't know if she's kicked it now.

by Anonymousreply 1August 24, 2016 12:53 AM

She was way too fat to be a heroin addict.

by Anonymousreply 2August 24, 2016 12:55 AM

Yes she has. She has been sober for years and even founded a charity/foundation that helps kids/teens struggling with addiction issues....thank you very much.

by Anonymousreply 3August 24, 2016 12:57 AM

Um, you're welcome?

by Anonymousreply 4August 24, 2016 1:01 AM

Addiction to what? Mille- feuilles?

by Anonymousreply 5August 24, 2016 1:04 AM

R2

She's huge on the first few seasons I've seen, meaning she looks like a normal, healthy and athletic woman of stature.

I'm on Season 3. When was her addiction?

My only prior experience seeing her was on an episode of SATC years ago. JGL is so young, but seems very poised. I'll bet his IQ is stratospheric.

A friend posted an old photo of me squinting along with a photo of French Stewart. Uncanny resemblance. Yikes.

"The episode where he talks about having a one night stand with a student's mother has enough triggers to kill the heartiest of Trigglypuffs."

You really are quite desperate.

by Anonymousreply 7August 24, 2016 1:21 AM

Kristin Johnson was stacked like the proverbial brick shithouse. She's at least 6 ft. tall. Not sure about heroin but she was popping pills.

OP, this was one of my favorite shows at the time. I sometimes watch reruns on Hulu. One of my favorites is when Lithgow wears drag to a women's group meeting. The look on Curtin's face was hilarious when she first sees him. She's a great comedic actress.

by Anonymousreply 8August 24, 2016 1:27 AM

It could do fine on CBS. They have successful multi cam throwback shows.

by Anonymousreply 9August 24, 2016 1:28 AM

I agree with R9. I haven't watched it in years but one of my favorite minor characters was the black secretary lady.

by Anonymousreply 10August 24, 2016 1:37 AM

Johnston wrote a book about her addiction. She says it was pain killers but who knows. She took so many they actually ate thru her stomach lining and it burst.

by Anonymousreply 11August 24, 2016 2:14 AM

It was my ex's favorite tv show. That is sufficient condemnation, believe me.

by Anonymousreply 12August 24, 2016 2:22 AM

You're so desperate to make another thread about "SJWs" (?) and people on Twitter that you force them randomly into a discussion about a 90s sitcom? This makes no fucking sense.

by Anonymousreply 13August 24, 2016 2:29 AM

R13

The episode I was watching would have caused you to have an aneurysm.

Trigglypuffs like you need to stay in mommies basement forever.

by Anonymousreply 14August 24, 2016 2:32 AM

Yes, R11, I remember watching some new show she was on and they did a lot of wardrobe disguising of her belly because it looked distended even though she still had great legs and was normal sized everywhere else. Guess it never went back to being flat.

by Anonymousreply 15August 24, 2016 5:16 PM

Uh.... care to give us an example, OP?

by Anonymousreply 16February 8, 2020 4:23 AM

This show was brilliant

by Anonymousreply 17February 8, 2020 4:31 AM

Lithgow did a nude scene on Dexter.

by Anonymousreply 18February 8, 2020 4:41 AM

You can always spot an addict

by Anonymousreply 19February 8, 2020 4:53 AM

I loved this show back when it was on and wouldn't mind watching it today, but it's one of those shows that seems to have completely vanished since its original network run. I have not seen it listed anywhere in years.

by Anonymousreply 20February 8, 2020 5:18 AM

Johnston is now a regular on "Mom." She has become, to put it as politely as possible, quite zaftig.

And yes, TRFTS is one of television's most underrated comedies.

by Anonymousreply 21February 8, 2020 5:20 AM

Laffs does a Third Rock From The Sun binge week nights after That 70's Show "binge".

Watching back to back episodes a few nights per week can see why show was eventually cancelled. Whatever intent it started out with for ensemble cast, it soon became really all about "Dick", then "Dick and Mary" . Things only got worse when Tommy (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) scaled back and or left series to concentrate on school work. That was supposed to get him into a good college, which it did (Columbia) for all the good it did him as JGL didn't even bother to complete his degree.

Sally did get more screen time after JGL left or whatever, but the story line with Don ran its course, and none of her other relationships amounted to much.

by Anonymousreply 22February 8, 2020 5:49 AM

Kristen Johnston had problems with alcohol and opioid pharmaceuticals, but not heroin.

by Anonymousreply 23February 8, 2020 5:58 AM

Talking to a shrink, Lithgow says "the first time I saw Mary naked, the only thing I could think of was "I hope this skylight holds me".

by Anonymousreply 24February 8, 2020 5:59 AM

To r20 and those interested, you can watch it for free right now, or anytime. I use the free Tubi app. Lots of great throwback television to mine. Tubitv dot com. Now I’m inspired to watch it again, thanks DL. Will look for the episode that r8 suggested.

by Anonymousreply 25February 8, 2020 6:06 AM

Actually used to run into Kristen Johnston all the time a few years ago around Fifth avenue/west 11th -13th and or in Whole Foods on Union Square.

You can't miss her; the gal is blonde, tall and stacked. So tall woman could catch geese with rake. *LOL* There was now way she ever was addicted to hard drugs; she looks far to healthy and well nourished.

Never bothered to say hello or otherwise intrude on KJ's privacy, it simply isn't done.

by Anonymousreply 26February 8, 2020 6:09 AM

I love this show. Great cast and scripts.

by Anonymousreply 27February 8, 2020 6:13 AM

[Quote] She took so many they actually ate thru her stomach lining and it burst.

😦😦😦

[Quote] Johnston is now a regular on "Mom." She has become, to put it as politely as possible, quite zaftig.

She's perfect for that show. And she made a memorable appearance on SATC.

by Anonymousreply 28February 8, 2020 6:15 AM

A moment that has stuck with me since I had first watched it.

KJ had an ulcer that burst in 2006, things went septic which is bad. It is a wonder she's alive.

I love the show and I love Kristen. I loved her in TV Land's The Exes (where in one episode she hooks up with Tyler Posey and it turns out his character likes her because she looks just like his mom. LOL). She is a great and hilarious in "Mom". Her character had a rather emotional story starring Kathleen Turner has her long-lost aunt recently.

Who could blame her.

It is one of the greatest sitcoms of the modern era.

A friend loaned me the box set of DVDs and told me I would love it. He was right. You need a degree in history and philosophy to get a quarter of the jokes. Incredibly slapstick funny and simultaneously low key highbrow.

by Anonymousreply 33February 8, 2020 7:26 AM

My favourite episode of 'Just Shoot Me" is when French Stewart is playing that passive-aggressive puppeteer who Maya dates. Hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 34February 8, 2020 10:10 AM

French Stewart is also a semi-regular on "Mom," so it's sort of a mini-reunion.

by Anonymousreply 35February 8, 2020 2:51 PM

Was JGL a gay icon yet, or did he become one after this show?

by Anonymousreply 36February 8, 2020 2:54 PM

John Lithgow is a versatile genius, plain and simple. I‘Ve known that for decades, somewhere in the back of my brain, but now I’m going to pay more attention.

Maybe I’ll go on a weekend Lithgow binge. Toss suggestions if you’d like.

by Anonymousreply 37February 8, 2020 3:47 PM

Thought the same about Arrested Development when I recently rewatched it.

by Anonymousreply 38February 8, 2020 4:05 PM

Only the Asian kid went on to become a big name.

by Anonymousreply 39February 8, 2020 4:30 PM

R37 I just finished rewatching season 4 of Dexter just to see John Lithgow again as the trinity killer. He was amazing.

by Anonymousreply 40February 9, 2020 12:58 AM

Lithgow's son Ian was a semi-regular on the show as one of his students. Lucky that dad got him that gig because he has only worked sporadically since.

by Anonymousreply 41February 9, 2020 1:03 AM

The Twilight Zone movie came on the other day. I only caught the last part with John.
