Hunky CNN senior producer dies under mysterious circumstances while vacationing in Barcelona
What happened to Matt Null?
-
The CNN family is mourning the loss of Matt Null, a morning show senior producer who died Monday while on vacation with friends overseas.
For the last 3 years, Null was senior producer of Early Start. Before that he was a producer for FNC’s On the Record with Greta Van Susteren
Christine Romans, who reported the news on Early Start this morning, called Null “a rising star at CNN.”
“He is someone who really made a difference in the world through his job,” she added.
Before joining Fox News in 2012, Null worked his way through the local TV news ranks, at KRON in San Francisco, WSVN in Miami, WFTS in Tampa, among others. Null, 34, was in Barcelona when he died. A cause of death has not been revealed.

So he was vacationing in Barcelona with friends... just in time for the big Matinee Circuit party.
I'd say he did too much extasis and had a stroke.

Okay... now I'm being serious here... What is the message here that is being sent to the children, R62?
Look... I like porn. I have a level of respect for porn people because they had the nerve to do something that I wanted to do, but did not have the nerve to do it. BUT, there's something very wrong here when these people are using, or have used, sex to get ahead. I know that many of you might say "DUH", but...
This guy might have been legitimately skilled and talented as a producer, but as someone pointed out up thread, most people couldn't get their foot in the door. This thread reminds me a bit of the other DL thread where a straight-up whore is now starring on some soon-to-be gay reality show. Like????

You need connections to get a job as a producer in NY
by Anonymous | reply 86 | August 18, 2016 1:30 PM

Not necessarily R86...most TV producers I've known started as interns and worked their way up.
Yes, having connections could help you land an internship or production assistant job; but if you don't have the goods...you are NOT moving up.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | August 18, 2016 1:44 PM

Yes R87 but he needed connections as you said to get that internship. Even if you do, no guarantee you can move up. You need to hustle, network and use those connections to move up. Network news is the most insular industry, if you don't know someone you will never make it.
I know what I'm talking about because I've worked in the industry. You can't coast. You need to constantly hone your networking skills 24/7 to make it in this industry.

You still need connections and good networking skills nonetheless, that is my whole point. Nobody gets a job via a job posting at CNN, no matter how talented you are. At that level it is not what you know, but who you know.
If you worked at the network level, you would know that.

I've literally gotten an interview because I once had a threesome with a couple, and one of the guys worked at a company that had a job opening he thought I might be appropriate for. I ended up having to pass on it for unrelated reasons, but networking takes all kind of forms.

Sleeping your way to the top can also backfire. You are known for exchanging favors, and whispers start circulating in the newsroom. You have no credibility. In addition no guarantee you will move up by putting out. The only way someone can sleep their way to the top in this business is if you have such a strong charisma on-camera, that promotions are undeniable. But you just need that little push or that little referral to get the ball rolling.
For producers, sleeping your way up does noting to advance your career. All it starts is whispers campaigns, which destroys your credibility.

Ok if this guy was an internationally known porn star, he would never get hired. But what I can gather it is not like he put that fact on any resume. He in all likelihood hid this from his bosses, hoping no one would find out. If the folks at CNN found out, he would be definitely let go using the morals clause in his employment agreement. he would definitely not work in network or local news again.
He would have better luck working behind the scenes in reality TV

The truth is out.
He was volunteering at the local homeless shelter when a boy started choking. He used the Heimlich to help. The meat came flying out.
He then left and walked to the hotel (because he doesn't want to support global warming by taking a car) he gave money to an orphan beggar and then agreed to adopt the child.
and then he took meth and died.

Only 3 hoofed it back to the hotel. They were questioned by police the following. Someone recalled Matt lying on the ground with a gun pointed to his head saying "Whatever" to the cop.

Remembering a friend, ex-'On the Record' producer Matt Null

Unless he died from a criminal act, what happened is really none of your business, though it has been fun to speculate.
Overall the guy seems like he led an interesting life, was very well liked, and he had some balls.

According to a comment on Str8UpGay Porn his work at Corbin Fisher was in his Linkedin profile. Given he's a producer and not on air talent, I would expect CNN couldn't care less about his porn past.

Someone with him on the trip posted this on facebook:
[quote] Thank you to everyone who has reached out to check on me and others. It has been a rough few days and Matt's passing was certainly the most traumatic thing I have experienced in my life. All of the love and support has definitely made this time a little more bearable... Matt was one of the most caring, compassionate and sincere people I have met. He always made any time I spent with him "Super Fun". In the years since I first met him, I can not count the amount of times he has turned my frown upside down with one of his silly jokes or grabbing me and forcing me to dance when I was "boring him". We had an amazing time in Barcelona and our last night together was one of our best. I take comfort in knowing that he passed having a "Super Fun Time" with all of us and I hope that all of you do as well... Many people have asked what they can do to help. It would mean so much if you could donate through the link below to help with the initial expenses the family will incur. Any little bit helps and every donation will be appreciated.
Any inferences from this message? Other than the oddity that a highly-placed television producer needs his friends passing around a hat for funeral expenses?

I call bull shit on this, someone wants to make a lot of money from his death. Americans die overseas all the time as tourists. There are standard procedure to deal with that. Usually they cremate the body before its shipped back. Easy cheesy. less than 400 dollars. Some friends, they expect everyone else to pay for his expenses.

Well, I am the one who copied the facebook comment to Datalounge... I must say that the friend who posted it is a young (20s, 30 at most) circuit party boy who until recently was dating an escort and former Splash Puerto-Rican bartender, and I believe (about 80% sure) he was an escort himself at one point or another... I WOULD NOT BE SURPRISED if he and some other buddies are unscrupulous enough to seek to profit from the situation... Yes, I realize I am passing judgement and assuming that someone who would escort is probably less ethical in other matters (and it may not always be so), but I don't think that's an excessively unreasonable assumption...

His crowd funding page is up to 13,000 of a 20,000 goal. I dont know, it looks kind of legit, says the money is going to his family. But I thought the reason they needed the money was to deal with his funeral? Like I said before, almost all employers that size have a typical pay out for that kind of thing around 25,000. UNLESS, the death was a suicide. Just saying, or maybe the OD is considered as such. There is just something fish about the story.

Okay, no one really expects to die when they are 34, but this guy had a good job which I assume paid well. He had money to go to Barcelona for a circuit party. Not to mention, if he was partying with friends there, and he OD'd, they are not "responsible" but they are involved.

R174 all of my corporate jobs for the last 20+ years have had basic life insurance as a company-paid benefit. The amount is typically equal to 1 year of salary. So if your salary is $100K for example, you have a life insurance policy for $100K and if you die your designated beneficiary gets that payout. This is a VERY common benefit for salaried employees.

That's news to me R180. I've worked for some of the most well-known investment banks in NYC. I've had key-man insurance on me, but never a company that offered personal life insurance as a benefit. As I wrote earlier, group life insurance, (and where an employee pays the premium), makes sense to me...but, I don't know, or have ever known any company that does that. I suppose I have missed out! You learn something new everyday.
I'm of the generation of where a lot of these type of benefits have been cut i.e. Dental.

R181 I spent 8 years with a Wall St firm and had the life insurance benefit described. I thought it was standard in that industry. I moved on to a different industry but find that it's pretty standard. You must work for the one firm that doesn't offer it LOL. There's usually an option to buy additional insurance at employee cost, but the 1x salary is company paid everywhere I've worked.

[quote]maybe it's me, but I don't know, (or have known) of any private company that offers basic life insurance as a benefit.
It's you, every company I have worked for offered this as a standard benefit. Most people under 50 dont die on the job so its very cheap for the employer to offer this as a small perk. I worked in different fields from creative ones like you see in Hollywood doing post film work to education and architecture. All of those companies had this. Are you in the US? It's pretty standard unless its a very small company of say 20 or less. You may even have it and not know it. Read your benefits package or talk to HR...assuming you have any benefits where you work. If you have health insurance through your employer, most likely you have this too.

I had life insurance offered as an extra where I paid part of the premium depending on the amount I wanted to be paid out. I cant remember how much they took out of my check but my other half would have received 250,000. I think it was maybe 50.00 a month. Its usually an extra you have to pay for unless your company has really great benefits. It didn't cover things like suicide or if I had some elective surgery like Lipo and died on the table. Only accidents and natural causes. So I would guess if I were to OD it would be considered accidental suicide. Which is why I suspect this guy died of an overdose.

It was a stark reminder of now much more natural amateur porn was back then. He seemed like a sweet guy in his solo/interview video, and he obviously enjoyed getting fucked (a gay man enjoying having sex with a man--how refreshing considering how porn today is overrun with so many G4Pers who make it seem like some ordeal). He'd obviously lived lot and aged a great deal in the past 12 years, so it was a little bittersweet to see that he'd once been that fresh-faced. He was still a real person, and it's sad to have anyone that age go so soon.

I've also always had life insurance with fulltime jobs. Sometimes not as much as a year's pay. But as someone mentioned you can opt to purchase more. It's a pretty standard benefit. Same with disability insurance. I think a lot of people are unaware they have this coverage through work, for some reason HR doesn't seem to publicize it. Everyone knows about medical because they use it. Death/disability insurance are not even considered most of the time.

I've never had life insurance provided through an employer -- and I've worked in higher ed for 30+ years. I've had the 'option' to get insurance for up to 5x my salary, but that is a supplemental benefit requiring my contributions (and health exam, blood testing, etc).
I have a small life insurance policy to cover funeral expenses that my grandparents opened for me when I was born. It is a 5K policy that will barely do anything.
None of these provide benefits immediately upon death. The friends/family need cash now to ship the body back from overseas. While I think that a GoFundMe type operation is downright tacky, not all 30-somethings in NYC have that sort of disposable income to cover the 20K in expenses.

Actually that is not true. Many programs will pay very fast because of time constraints and most funeral homes will hold off on the bill if you can produce the documents to prove they are still covered. People die unexpectedly every day, most dont have 10,000 cash just lying around.
As for his poor friends in NY I call bullshit. Most of those party bitches had enough money to travel to Europe, they certainly can divide up the cost. I am sure living in NY most of them have credit cards with high limits, and no one cares how you pay as long as you pay. Those friends just dont want to be put out of their way.
When my first partner died of AIDS 20 years ago, I had to raise money to do exactly the same thing. And the age of 25 without GoFund me or Facebook. I called everyone from relatives to friends and asked them to pitch in. (one parent was on disability, the other was a drunk). THAT is when you find out who was a real friend and who was not.

It's not 20,000! I know, I have lost several friends. Such drama queens. That's what it would cost if you had some elaborate casket with gold handles and hand finished lacquered wood. A typical funeral runs around 7,000 - 10,000 total, that's casket in the ground, ceremony, flowers everything. Yes you can spend any amount you want but 20,000 is way overboard. If they cremate him overseas, it would be 1/4 of that price. Chances are this ex-porn star is not that religious so, doubt he would care. 10 friends and family can't scrape up 1,000 on their credit cards while doing circuit parties in Europe? They probably spend more than that on drugs and entertainment.
Bitch, please.
And by the way, what about all those whiny fake bitches on CNN and FOX who said they shed a tear for him on the air. Those people make 10,000 a day or MORE. Why haven't any of them put their money where their mouth is? Whats one day of work for someone you called a friend who made you smile?
