Worst Soap Recast Ever Part Two

Even long running artistes like Ronn Moss were recast.......

by Anonymousreply 322July 22, 2023 11:26 AM

There were talking about bringing Moss to Days. Possibly playing Bo....EWWWW!

by Anonymousreply 1August 4, 2016 3:00 AM

.. Recasting decisions for role of Ridge on B&B head-scratchingly bad....B&B are you kidding?

by Anonymousreply 2August 4, 2016 4:04 AM

Christian Jules LeBlanc would've made a good Ridge recast. I can see him having great chemistry with Katherine Kelly Lang.

by Anonymousreply 3August 4, 2016 4:08 AM

r3

you mean Katherine Kelly Lang's son

by Anonymousreply 4August 4, 2016 4:10 AM

Huh, r4? Is KKL's son on the show?

by Anonymousreply 5August 4, 2016 4:24 AM

r5

Her son did gay porn on sean cody(it was pretty hot actually)

hmmm... it's called Nick and Jeffrey

by Anonymousreply 8August 4, 2016 4:37 AM

there was a game show called Tattletales, kind of like the Newlywed Game; couples gave answers and then if they matched the audience would win money because the couples on Tattletales were all celebs; Kim Zimmer and Jordan Clarke did an episode with two other soap couples (on air) and a question posed was: what's more outlandish: the onscreen storylines or backstage drama? All the couples answered the backstage stuff was more dramatic than anything you'd see on TV.

I never forgot that. It's true. None of Brooke's kids ever did porn.

by Anonymousreply 9August 4, 2016 5:06 AM

when a thread on KKL's son doing porn was first started, a poster wrote:

"What do you expect from a mother with no morals or standards and who is such a poor role model."

I thought that was harsh, but then laughed when the post was signed: "Stephanie Forrester."

by Anonymousreply 10August 4, 2016 5:07 AM

Is DYKWIA Ridge's son?

by Anonymousreply 11August 4, 2016 5:40 AM

Miss LeBlanc would be all ovet KKL's son!

by Anonymousreply 12August 4, 2016 6:24 AM

Don't think Jacob Young wasn't, r12

by Anonymousreply 13August 4, 2016 8:09 AM

More on the execrable Judy Dewey. Laura Malone was on maternity leave and Dewey filled in. When Malone got back, she was agitated, suffering post par tum depression and had gained a TON of weight. P&G wanted to cut her salary since Jacquie Courtney's salary was so high, so out went Malone who filed a discrimination suit and quietly won. She never worked again though.

by Anonymousreply 14August 4, 2016 9:26 AM

P & G could be cheap at times. They also had some of the worst recasts I've ever seen. Columbia/Sony also had their moments on Days and Y & R. Even though there was a common audition pool for the now Sony soaps, they had different ideas about casting.

by Anonymousreply 15August 4, 2016 12:24 PM

R10 I am sore from laughing. Missed that first time around. Thank you.

by Anonymousreply 16August 4, 2016 5:11 PM

I know P&G actresses were more realistic, and less vapid bombshell types, but even with that yardstick, Laura Malone was homely.

Between Blaine and Rachel's hideous perm my retinas were scorched beyond repair one summer.

by Anonymousreply 17August 4, 2016 5:16 PM

Wyndham was so fugly! My gosh. Hit by the oogly stick.

by Anonymousreply 18August 4, 2016 7:56 PM

I heard Rauch put the kibosh on a REVERED GL actress from coming back to the show because she wasn't pretty enough.

I thought WTF? He had Vicky front and center in Bay City for years.

Not that I don't love Vicky; could watch her all day.

Malone got the shaft.

Dewey wasn't that great of a replacement.

by Anonymousreply 19August 4, 2016 9:22 PM

Lee Merriwether as Ruth on AMC. I mean playing Ruth wasn't exactly a remake of Sophie's Choice but she still managed to stink up the place. The should have just had Ruth die a natural death on the show. Or gave Pickett one last hurrah with a major storyline about committing someone to a nursing home. Having that "actress" on as Ruth was an insult to Pickett and the AMC viewers. It actually made me angry.

by Anonymousreply 20August 4, 2016 10:16 PM

R20 Um, It's Mary Fickett. Meriwether seemed to young and was nothing like Fickett's Ruth. It was like totally different character to me. Fickett did come back for occasional appearances after Meriwether left in 1998 (Wikipedia is wrong on that) until about 2001. Then Meriwether returned in 2002 on a recurring basis.

by Anonymousreply 21August 4, 2016 10:29 PM

Any gossip on Kim Delaney? Was she a drunken mess during AMC but just hid it well and she was young enough where it didn't effect her looks? Or did this just happen after she left. That girl is a fucking mess. Pissed away what could have been a long A list career.

Kim Delaney had a pretty good career for a while. There were rumors she did coke in early 80s, as supposed did most of the younger cast then. I don't think her drinking became problem until at least 90s or later.

by Anonymousreply 24August 4, 2016 10:46 PM

She can't even see her kids. I've lost my grand babies because of her.

by Anonymousreply 25August 4, 2016 10:49 PM

I think drinking problem got so bad they didn't bring her back for the last season of Army Wives.

by Anonymousreply 26August 4, 2016 11:00 PM
I heard Rauch put the kibosh on a REVERED GL actress from coming back to the show because she wasn't pretty enough.

Who?

by Anonymousreply 27August 5, 2016 1:56 AM

I always liked Malone -- she gave Blaine a certain vulnerability that undercut her ambitious climbing. Blaine seemed liked a real person, rather than the one-note clichés that are "soap bitches" currently. I don't remember Dewey ATALL.

by Anonymousreply 28August 5, 2016 2:10 AM

I can't believe that no one has said either Lynn Topping or Betsy Durkin.

by Anonymousreply 29August 5, 2016 2:15 AM

What was wrong with Lynn Topping? When the Brooks sisters returned for the Victor Nikki wedding in 1984, the original actress was in the role and she gained a ton of weight.

by Anonymousreply 30August 5, 2016 2:21 AM

Not a recast, per se, but remember after Jenny and the jet ski of death, AMC brought on the character of Shiela, played by a Kim Delaney look a like? I don't remember the actress's name. She really did have an uncanny resemblance to Delaney, but she was a HORRID actress and the storyline was universally hated. Poor Larry Lau looked miserable the whole time. She was fired pretty soon.

by Anonymousreply 31August 5, 2016 2:22 AM

R19 Rauch didn't want to fuck the less attractive actress. He was Harvey Weinstein before HW was even born.

by Anonymousreply 32August 5, 2016 2:35 AM

R31 Sheila was another case of Laura Templeton. Remember her from GH played by Janine Turner? She looked like Laura at first and had people taking a took and being confused. In the end,Sheila looked like a demented and slightly off Jenny. Lau was better off on AW when he was paired with the gorgeous ,Joanna Going. She wasn't the greatest actress back then but Go she looked good.

by Anonymousreply 33August 5, 2016 3:00 AM

Yeah, Greg Nelson was pretty much over as a character when Jenny blew up. They tried a few other romantic pairings, and even a couple of different actors, but with no Jenny, Greg didn't work.

by Anonymousreply 34August 5, 2016 3:07 AM

Then they paired Greg up with that blonde whore. I think Robin was her name. They say when Greg was fucking imposter Jenny Sheila it was the most graphic sex scene up until that time on daytime. I laughed when he went "Jenny Jenny" That's what you get whore.

by Anonymousreply 35August 5, 2016 3:12 AM

They recast Greg in 1986 with Jack Armstrong (also one of the many Kevin's on OLTL) after Lau left. He lasted maybe 6 months tops.

Robin was played by Hunter Tylo before her first plastic surgery makeover.

by Anonymousreply 36August 5, 2016 3:13 AM

I had no idea Greg was recast. Fake Greg had some nice tits.

by Anonymousreply 37August 5, 2016 3:18 AM

I meant:She wasn't the greatest actress back then but God she looked good.

by Anonymousreply 38August 5, 2016 3:22 AM

Don Scardino, now a big-time director, also played Greg Nelson, subbing for Lau in 1985 when Lau took a leave of absence when his father passed away. Lau's first episode back was the Kate Martin funeral episode in the summer of '85. They chemistry tested Lau with Tasia Valenza's Dottie and Carmen Thomas's Hillary, but those went nowhere. I think Jack Armstrong played out most of the Greg/Robin romance before he left the show. Side note: anyone remember a late-night dance show on ABC called New York Hot Tracks co-hosted by Darnell Williams, Debbi Morgan, Jack Armstrong, and Deborah Morehart (aka Hunter Tylo)? The promos were hysterical, with all four of them disco dancing as they invited viewers to watch the show.

by Anonymousreply 39August 5, 2016 3:22 AM

I bet you Lau was a hot mess off screen.

by Anonymousreply 40August 5, 2016 3:28 AM

Greg and Jenny reunite when AMC ends. Featuring the jet ski explosion, which seems like pure camp. Where is Liza Colby?

by Anonymousreply 41August 5, 2016 3:29 AM

I'm right here, bitch r41.

by Anonymousreply 42August 5, 2016 3:30 AM

Two of the best recasts(Larry Lau and Ann Heche) and one of the worst (Philece Sampler) in a an episode segment from Another World featuring a dream sequence with Joanna Going, Lau and Heche. Philece wasn't a bad actress she just wasn't Donna Love at all.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 43August 5, 2016 3:47 AM

You think Lau was a good recast as Jamie? He was awful. Richard Bekins was the best.

by Anonymousreply 44August 5, 2016 3:49 AM

Sampler was popular on Days and Another World hoped she would bring some of her fans to that show. Sampler was supposed to the be young and sexy Donna.

I never would have guessed that Joanna Going would still have a career. I loved her as Victoria on Dark Shadows.

by Anonymousreply 45August 5, 2016 3:50 AM

R44 He had great chemistry with Going. Pretty good for a gay guy and a hot straight girl.

by Anonymousreply 46August 5, 2016 3:53 AM

Greg is a gay?

by Anonymousreply 47August 5, 2016 3:54 AM

R45 She became an artiste doing things like Mad Men, Inventing The Abbotts and now The Kingdom. I guess she never blew Harvey Weinstein. Then again she did dreck like Spin City and the like.

by Anonymousreply 48August 5, 2016 3:55 AM

R48 Yes Lau is one of us. Check DL for anyone who has had him.

by Anonymousreply 49August 5, 2016 3:56 AM

The last post was aimed at R47 not R48. Yes Lau is family.

by Anonymousreply 50August 5, 2016 3:57 AM

They cast Joanna Going as Lisa soley because she resembled Kim Delaney, with the intent of luring viewers who wanted to "relive" Greg and Jenny. It was actually a casting stunt that sort of worked, I guess.

by Anonymousreply 51August 5, 2016 4:04 AM

How about Veleka Gray as Laura Elliott o LIAMST? She was screechy. They found a girl Barbara Stanger who could have been Donna Mills's younger sister to play Laura and she was just fine.

by Anonymousreply 52August 5, 2016 9:32 AM
Sampler was supposed to the be young and sexy Donna.

Or as we call her on the AW threads, Brand New Sexy Donna!

(as opposed to Original Recipe Donna).

by Anonymousreply 53August 5, 2016 11:24 AM

R51 I mean Joanna Going was a brunette and Kim Delaney was a brunette but Joanna was on a different echelon of beauty. Kim was cute/pretty and Joanna was gorgeous. In the end, Lisa and Jamie worked as a couple. Yes the star/stunt casting was a success.

by Anonymousreply 54August 5, 2016 11:35 AM

Cut Veleka Gray some slack. She was engaged to marry Joel Crothers when he suddenly died. They were soul mates and the love of each other's life, and I don't think she ever truly recovered from that devastating loss.

by Anonymousreply 55August 5, 2016 12:25 PM

Joel Crothers liked pussy?! On what planet did he like snatch? Uranus.......

by Anonymousreply 56August 5, 2016 12:41 PM

R53, I crack up any time I see Philece Sampler playing Anne Heche's mother and saying "Victoria."

I have such a crush on Anna Stuart. Rewatching mid-80s AW and she just turned up. Anna's 1983/84 Donna is delicious.

by Anonymousreply 57August 5, 2016 1:38 PM

Did Enid know Greg was a bone smuggler?

by Anonymousreply 58August 5, 2016 10:53 PM

Enid has more important things to worry about at the moment, such as pondering why prostitutes are allowed to dine in the Goal Post.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 59August 5, 2016 10:56 PM

E58 I think if Enid found that out she would react like this and but also swallow the pill bottle.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 60August 5, 2016 11:04 PM

Apparently Natalie Ross (Enid) is still alive and 84 years old now. Sadly most of the other "oldtimers" are no longer around.

by Anonymousreply 61August 5, 2016 11:08 PM

I remember when they were doing the Cindy AIDS storyline, and the writers were trying to show what happens when hysteria takes over common sense about the virus. They had an hysterical scene where Enid rushes into Joe Martin's office, fearing that she contracted AIDS from Cindy, who was working in the Glamorama. I remember howling at Enid's paranoia. It was just pure Agnes Nixon brilliance, mining comedy from a very serious storyline.

by Anonymousreply 62August 5, 2016 11:09 PM

Now having Greg come out as a bum bandit after Jenny exploded would have been a great story. What about the guy who played Jesse? I always though he was a meat masseuse . Greg gay. I can't get over it.

by Anonymousreply 63August 5, 2016 11:14 PM

R59 I know Lettie Jean is a prostitute and all, but what made her think showing that much cleavage at Goal Post was good idea?

by Anonymousreply 64August 5, 2016 11:18 PM

I love how Donna eventually lost her hooker accent.

by Anonymousreply 65August 5, 2016 11:22 PM

Christ, remember those gawky bright painted-on polyester pants they used to make Donna and Estelle wear when they worked the Locust Street stroll? Donna was a recast too. Before Candance Earley took over the role, the part was originally played by Francesa Poston, daughter of Tom Poston and step-daughter of Suzanne Pleshette.

by Anonymousreply 66August 5, 2016 11:24 PM

I sampled all the soaps when they were great, and got into different ones for a short time, but in high school and college in the 80s, I was all about the three A's --AMC, ATWT, AW. Loved the characters on those shows.

by Anonymousreply 67August 5, 2016 11:24 PM

r42, I love you.

Haining was one scary messed up Angel. "Lily....is Holden there?"

by Anonymousreply 68August 5, 2016 11:30 PM

R27, I dont want to say. Out of respect to her. She's revered and she actually came back for some shows and Rauch didn't get her and she was gone.

Which was a huge mistake.

by Anonymousreply 69August 5, 2016 11:34 PM

Speaking of ATWT and AW, does anybody remember when the fabulous Aussie Carmen Duncan took over for Eileen Fulton on ATWT for a few eisodes? She got complaints for her Aussie accent on AW which was ridiculous. She actually deserved scorn for her quasi-Aussie/Yankee accent on ATWT. Carmen was great on AW but so wrong on ATWT. Where the fuck did P & G get all these corny casting ideas?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 70August 5, 2016 11:36 PM

R70 sometimes they just need someone to come in who knows the ropes and can hit their marks, crank out the scenes and the show gets in the can and then the original player comes back..

Other temporary bonehead recasts were Josh Taylor as Quinton on GL.

And man, Nick Stabile was SUCH a hottie as a kid on Sunset Beach, but was wrong as Nikolas on GH.

by Anonymousreply 71August 5, 2016 11:38 PM

I know there's a bunch of reasons the soaps were cancelled and it's really too bad. Were the ratings really THAT low? Or were they just looking for an excuse to put on a bunch of cheap shit? Have the replacement shows done any better? I think soaps would have eventually adjusted a little for the times and had a new renaissance. It happened quite a lot with soaps. It's too bad. I moved on from soaps years ago but I'm having a wave of nostalgia. Especially for Nina, Jenny, and Greg. AMC was my my show.

by Anonymousreply 72August 5, 2016 11:42 PM

The worst thing about the Duncan replacement on ATWT was that they were hardly even using Eileen Fulton at the time. She was essentially a glorified extra with a contract. Yet, when she had to take a leave of absence, they picked up Duncan and gave her more lines and story involvement in the short time she was there than Fulton had the previous two years. Quite a slap in the face to Fulton. And then the scandalous way she was sidelined in the finale. Whatever did she do to piss off Goutman?

by Anonymousreply 73August 5, 2016 11:42 PM

AMC cast pic from 1982. There's baby dyke Amanda Bearse sitting on the floor in front of Ruthie Warrick. I can identify just about everyone, except for the guy in the back row standing between Natalie Ross (Enid) and Julia Barr (Brooke) with her pubic perm. Interesting that Lucci was not front and center, and she would be more almost all subsequent cast pics.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 74August 5, 2016 11:52 PM

R73 Really fun stuff. Carmen is decent at what she does. She was living between Europe and Australia when she did that turn on ATWT if I'm not mistaken. She came all the way out to NYC to do that?! It's not like she needed the money. Then again Joan Collins slummed on a P & G soap. How the mighty have fallen.......

by Anonymousreply 75August 6, 2016 12:21 AM

Kind of sad when you think Phoebe, real Ruth, Palmer, Adam, Nick, Mona, Myrtle, Langley, and I am guessing Myra and Sloan are all gone.

by Anonymousreply 76August 6, 2016 12:31 AM

R76 Elizabeth Lawrence (Myra) died of cancer in 2000. There nothing much online about Ronald Drake (Sloan) or if he is alive or dead. He was from England originally, so perhaps he moved back there sometime after he left AMC. I found a newspaper article about him from 1962 where he said he was 34 then, so if he's still alive he would be 88 years old now.

by Anonymousreply 77August 6, 2016 12:40 AM

R76 Billy Clyde Tuggle died as well. What a shame that was.......

by Anonymousreply 78August 6, 2016 12:47 AM

Also in that pic, Andrea Moar, Tudi Wiggins, Lee Chamberlin, and Portia Nelson are no longer alive.

by Anonymousreply 79August 6, 2016 12:48 AM
Were the ratings really THAT low?

It was about the bottom line. Let's say AMC was pulling 2.0 rating when it was cancelled. While ABC was still making money, ABC could cancel AMC and put on a cheap network produced talk show. And even though the talk show was still pulling a 2.0 rating it was making more money because it was cheaper to produce. And in the end that was what did a lot of soaps in, the production cost versus the return on the investment by the network.

What ABC should have done was cut both OLTL and AMC to half hours. Cut cast, cut the budget, go to barebones sets and at least try the soaps as 30 minute shows to see if that would breathe new life into them.

Back to recasts.

What do you all think about Leon Russom's Willis? It's clear that the Willis Russom was playing was nothing like the character was envisioned.

by Anonymousreply 80August 6, 2016 12:49 AM

R80 An outside entity tried that and it didn't work with AMC and OLTL. ABC could have kept them alive but the cost of a soap vs a talk show and the relative profit has doomed soaps.

by Anonymousreply 81August 6, 2016 12:52 AM

The problem was more about demos than overall viewership. Nobody under 49 was watching these shows. Add to that the production costs for AMC were out of hand.

by Anonymousreply 82August 6, 2016 12:54 AM

Prospect Park was never going to work. If those 30 minutes shows, especially AMC, was on ABC Network TV, I do believe they would have gotten ratings. OLTL was kind of a mess on PP, but AMC was damned good.

As for the demos, you sell to the audience you have. Look at Fox News. Look at those syndicated shows. They are advertising vaginal mesh lawsuit commercials, lots of drug companies. and hover rounds.

by Anonymousreply 83August 6, 2016 12:57 AM

Andrea Mar drowned 5 yrs ago. Always liked her. Reminded me of Nancy Barrettes.

by Anonymousreply 84August 6, 2016 1:15 AM

I loved the interaction between Viki, Dorian, and Echo in those final days on ABC.

Three established soap divas, bickering, it was wonderful.

They were smack on perfect.

by Anonymousreply 85August 6, 2016 1:24 AM

I loved the AMC reboot on Hulu. It seemed like the old AMC when it was still good. I would've even settled for weekly shows if they could keep it going.

Prospect Park was really clueless about how costly it would be to keep the shows going. AMC started taping first and when the actors arrived they were still building set and didn't even have chairs or other basic things that the actors would need. It was a big mess! It was miraculous how well the actual show turn out.

by Anonymousreply 86August 6, 2016 1:25 AM

r86 Prospect Park had to start shooting by a certain date or lost the rights to the shows.

From what I recall, they shot the first scene of the rebooted AMC on the last day of their option. And yes, they were still building sets and setting up dressing rooms as the cameras started rolling.

by Anonymousreply 87August 6, 2016 1:41 AM

Carmen Duncan was an absolutely heinous Lisa, but Jane Powell was remarkably good. Fit right in. She actually did the temporary replacement gig four times! Betsy von Furstenberg was terrible and they were right to plan to kill off her Lisa. The show would have been very different if they had followed through with that plan.

by Anonymousreply 88August 6, 2016 1:49 AM

P & G did not treat EF with respect. She was a soap icon. La Lucci would never have accepted a recast. They would have given someone else a story. Though I loved Carmen on AW she was all wrong on ATWT.

by Anonymousreply 89August 6, 2016 2:03 AM

They should have killed off Martha Byrne

by Anonymousreply 90August 6, 2016 2:11 AM

And JonEric, please stop pretending to be black.

by Anonymousreply 91August 6, 2016 2:13 AM

R90 Martha Byrne wasn't even Martha Byrne! How did this blah girl get all these hot guys? I could buy Noelle Beck being a woman men wanted BUT Byrne.......not so much.

by Anonymousreply 92August 6, 2016 2:20 AM

It was a frau fantasy geared toward the millions of Martha Byrnes who watched the show every day and fantasized that a hot guy could fall for them too.

by Anonymousreply 93August 6, 2016 2:48 AM

Most straight guys fuck those needy gingivitis types once and move on. If she can't prove she's on the pill or using an IUD they fuck her up the ass or get a good blow job. Good luck with those teeth.

What bothers me most is the large number of lesbians I know who got off on their heroine, Lily, being with a man.

I wonder if Jamie recast, Larry Lau, topped Joanna Going. I would have let her ride me. He might be gay but she was so fabulous looking who cares, it could have been fun.

by Anonymousreply 96August 6, 2016 12:49 PM

Rhonda Lewin was so bad as AW's Vicky, they never even let her play Marley. She came in briefly between Wheeler and Heche. I remembered her being prettier than this. I can't imagine she was worse than Jensen Buchannan!

by Anonymousreply 97August 6, 2016 12:50 PM

Joanna Going was originally on Search For Tomorrow as Evie Stone. So she was part of the P & G talent pool before she was Lisa on AW.

by Anonymousreply 98August 6, 2016 12:52 PM

Matthew Ashford with Joanna Going on SFT. EON and SFT were two of the first P & G soaps to go.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 99August 6, 2016 12:54 PM

Rhonda Lewin? Not bad looking but lacking as Vicky. P & G literally picked people off the street if they could. Not even La Fulton was spared from their miscasting.

by Anonymousreply 100August 6, 2016 1:01 PM

David Canary as Steve Frame. That was a disaster.

by Anonymousreply 101August 6, 2016 1:07 PM
What do you all think about Leon Russom's Willis? It's clear that the Willis Russom was playing was nothing like the character was envisioned.

I hated that recast on a purely physical level -- John Fitzpatrick was so handsome and Leon Russom was so not. Russom's looks made it impossible for him to be a believable romantic interest for anyone but Gwen (Dorothy Lyman). Luckily, the two of them did have chemistry.

Russom was such a different kind of actor that Lemay totally reinterpreted the character to play to Russom's strengths.

by Anonymousreply 102August 6, 2016 2:44 PM

Why didn't anyone tell me that Jami Gertz was on Another World? I never knew she replaced someone. Who knew that she ever did soap operas? Talk about being a doppelganger of sorts.....

by Anonymousreply 103August 6, 2016 11:41 PM

I don't get it R103...

by Anonymousreply 104August 7, 2016 4:23 AM

R80, original Willis, John Fitzpatrick was sex on a stick, a real bad boy; Lemay wrote in his memoir he was let go for reasons that had nothing to do with his talent.

Leon was just this guy who took over the role; I think he'd have been fine in another part, but he wasn't Willis.

Fitzpatrick was a loss to AW; as were Richard Bekins, Beverly Penberthy, Jacqui Courtney, McKinsey...

I think ATWT did a great job of hanging onto veterans when it came to the P&G shows.

by Anonymousreply 105August 7, 2016 6:41 AM

I never saw Laurie Heinemen, the Sharlene from AW, who was one of the first actresses to beat Lucci for the Emmy. Was Anna Holbrook considered a better replacement? She was good, and won an Emmy for the part as well.

by Anonymousreply 106August 7, 2016 12:05 PM
I think soaps would have eventually adjusted a little for the times and had a new renaissance.

Yeah. Like the way DOOL has retooled itself for the 21st century.

by Anonymousreply 107August 7, 2016 12:28 PM

Honestly, it was so long in between the two Sharlenes that I made no comparison of them. Both were fine actresses, though Anna Holbrook was warmer and more accessible. She also had a better acting partner in David Forsyth. Heineman was saddled with David Bailey.

by Anonymousreply 108August 7, 2016 12:44 PM

Does anyone know if the ratings for the remaining soaps have come up? Getting viewers from the cancelled ones? It's too bad they're gone. It was fun watching these shows and loving them and having friends that were into them too. The way you could watch them for a couple of hours then discuss them for a couple of hours like the friggen characters were real. I miss that. God bless the VCR though. You could tape them and watch them later and FF through the commercials.

by Anonymousreply 109August 7, 2016 5:18 PM

R109 Ratings are at all-time lows. The remaining shows are in a sad state, and the ratings show that.

by Anonymousreply 110August 7, 2016 5:33 PM

B&B hit record lows in the demos the past two weeks. Y&R and GH are both down in year-to-date numbers, and GOOL is a disaster, far behind the other three in HH and demo numbers. It's barely getting 2 million viewers.

by Anonymousreply 111August 7, 2016 10:56 PM

I always thought David Ackroyd would have made a great Russ Matthews re-cast instead of bringing Bailey back again and again. But Robert Hover as Russ after the terrific Sam Groom was a true disaster.

by Anonymousreply 112August 8, 2016 4:20 PM

I just noticed that P&G seems to have had a lot of hands in influencing the casting of the musical [italic]Annie[/italic] in its various incarnations. Martha Byrne was an orphan in the Broadway cast at some point, Andrea McArdle was on [italic]Search for Tomorrow[/italic] first (and she sure as hell found "Tomorrow"), the 1982 movie, which is where the P&G and Columbia sensibilities intersect (Ralph Burns' arrangement of "Tomorrow" always sounded to me similar to the Y&R theme song), has Colleen Zenk in it as a dancer, and I think even Aileen Quinn had done Pringles commercials or one of the edible foodlike substances they used to own but don't anymore. And Victor Garber was on [italic]Guiding Light[/italic] long before that Disney thing.

But then of course Carol Burnett did that guest shot on AMC, which was neither P&G nor Columbia.

by Anonymousreply 113August 8, 2016 6:27 PM

Burnett did AMC because she was a big fan of the show.

by Anonymousreply 114August 8, 2016 8:01 PM

Burnett did four stints on the show. Once as a hospital patient Mrs. Johnson in the '70s, and then as Verla Grubbs in 1983, 2005, and 2010. She was supposed to play Judith Sawyer, sister of Brandon Kingsley and mother of Chuck's gf Melanie Sawyer in 1982, but she had to pull out last minute. They got Gwen Verdon as a last minute replacement as Judith.

by Anonymousreply 115August 8, 2016 8:20 PM

When did Dorothy Lyman leave the role of Opal to do [italic]Mama's Family[/italic] full-time?

by Anonymousreply 116August 8, 2016 8:28 PM

I feel like Opal was gone from AMC by the end of 1983.

by Anonymousreply 117August 8, 2016 8:39 PM

Yeah, she left in 1983, one year before Kim Delaney exited. They quickly brought back Sandy Gabriel as Edna to fill the comedy gap.

by Anonymousreply 118August 8, 2016 8:42 PM

Brynn Thayer very briefly appeared as a recast Susan Banks on DOOL in late 2011. That was so WEIRD. And I love Brynn, it was just "off" and too strange. I pretend like it didn't happen because it was so random.

by Anonymousreply 119August 8, 2016 9:16 PM

the soap mags went wild over Thayer's gig; she wasn't really seen and it was just one show.

it's so odd to see the mags make a BIG deal over a minor casting item

That said, I loved Thayer as Jenny; she had a tough act to follow in angelic Kathy Glass

by Anonymousreply 120August 8, 2016 9:55 PM

Didn't everyone loathe Kathy Glass and were happy to see her go? Thayer wasn't as pretty or as convincing as an ingenue, but she had much better chemistry with Steve Fletcher and Judith Light. Was Jameson Parker still playing Brad when Thayer took over?

by Anonymousreply 121August 8, 2016 10:01 PM

I think there was some overlap; I don't recall Fletcher and Glass sharing screentime?

by Anonymousreply 122August 8, 2016 10:07 PM

No Fletcher and Glass never worked together. Glass was with Jameson. The cast and crew might have been happy to see Glass go. She was a pain in the ass and the writers and producers gave in to h er every demand. Some of them were ridiculous. Especially regarding her time off. She also made money that was unheard of for daytime at that time. She was wildly popular with the viewers. Especially the young viewers who were tuning in for the first time. Tuning in to watch Jenny and Tim.

by Anonymousreply 123August 8, 2016 10:26 PM

Jameson Parker was so fucking hot on One Life to Live

As far as I remember Brynn Thayer was Susan's voice on a phone on one episode? Why even bother hiring her for a day job? Another Days disaster indeed!

by Anonymousreply 125August 9, 2016 2:02 AM
As for the demos, you sell to the audience you have. Look at Fox News. Look at those syndicated shows. They are advertising vaginal mesh lawsuit commercials, lots of drug companies. and hover rounds.

Not to mention the very basis on which the notion of demos was created has been called into question and found to be untrue. Older viewers have no more brand loyalty than younger viewers, and they have the kind of expendable income younger viewers wish they had.

by Anonymousreply 126August 9, 2016 2:20 AM

r126, that's just the issue with older viewers: their brand loyalty. It's believed that younger viewers are less loyal to a particular brand or product, and thus more open to being swayed by commercials to try a new brand or product.

by Anonymousreply 127August 9, 2016 2:34 AM

I have hundreds of hours of AMC and OLTL that I taped on a VCR. From about 1979 to 1985, I'm thinking of converting them and upping them on YouTube. I just don't know if it would be worth the legal hassles I might get. I have just about EVERYTHING of Greg and Jenny and real Opal

by Anonymousreply 128August 9, 2016 2:34 AM

As I said, R127, it's been shown not to be true.

by Anonymousreply 129August 9, 2016 2:40 AM

I don't think it will be a huge issue, [R128]. There are TONS of soap episodes posted on YT. And full episodes, not just clips. That said, I think the eps are also posted in multi-part segments.

by Anonymousreply 130August 9, 2016 4:30 AM

I was actually at The View taping of the MAC finale. And Darnell Williams actually came right to me as he was announced and shook my hand before walking on stage. Major gay vibes.

by Anonymousreply 131August 9, 2016 7:19 AM
As far as I remember Brynn Thayer was Susan's voice on a phone on one episode? Why even bother hiring her for a day job? Another Days disaster indeed!

The entire scene was about 60 seconds long. You saw Susan's back as she talked on the phone. At the very end of the scene, Susan turned and you saw her face for about 5 seconds.

And that was it. Definitely overhyped.

by Anonymousreply 132August 9, 2016 10:05 AM

Darnell likes the cock. He's got a huge one.

by Anonymousreply 133August 9, 2016 10:25 AM

Kathy Glass had a bad experience with Return to Peyton Place (they dyed her hair and it fell out, she got a bleeding ulcer from overwork) so if she held sway at One Life, it was deservedly so. She had a higher Q rating than Erika Slezak or Jacquie Courntey at the time.

by Anonymousreply 134August 9, 2016 10:59 AM

I wasn't complaining about Glass she was awesome. Her and Ellen Holly saved One Life to Live from cancellation. Not Erika. The first story I really remember from soaps was Tim and Jenny. Her time off demands were for her extremely lucrative TV commercials she was contracted for. I've posted it on other soap threads, I'm not sure if I believe it or how they would know, but they say Glass still holds the record for amount of fan mail received. But Glass was great. I mean for her first six months she wore a nuns habit and was still able to become the show's most popular character.

Viki Sleestack saved OLTL multiple times.

by Anonymousreply 136August 9, 2016 1:07 PM

In between Kirsten Storms and Martha Madison as Belle Black on DAYS there was an actress, Charity Rahmer who you could literally see counting the steps it took to get to her mark when she was shooting. The role was defined by Kristen as a teen and Martha made Belle an adult but in between was a dark, dark place.

And Will Horton played by Chandler Massey's recast Guy Wilson literally destroyed the character. He wasn't a great actor, and not nearly as attractive as photos would lead you to believe.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 137August 9, 2016 1:12 PM

I'm not a Guy Wilson fan at all but the situations/writing for the character had gotten worse. When Will was killed you actually had fans defending him?! I would like to see Chandler back to redeem the terrible slasher story line.

by Anonymousreply 138August 9, 2016 1:44 PM

Guy Wilson is pure masculine beauty, certainly much better looking than that ferret face creature that preceded him. Poor Guy gave it his all, but he was done in my awful writing and a batshit crazy ferret fan base that couldn't emotionally deal with anyone else in the part.

by Anonymousreply 139August 9, 2016 2:57 PM

Muhney was a terrible recast. Hartley is a million times better.

by Anonymousreply 140August 9, 2016 3:02 PM

R139 for HW.

by Anonymousreply 141August 9, 2016 3:31 PM

Kathryn Breech was a much better Karen Wolek as conceived originally. She was a bitchy little tramp. Judith Light would have been better as a Vicki/Nikki re-cast.

by Anonymousreply 142August 9, 2016 4:17 PM

r142 is also probably still lamenting Patsy Rahn's dismissal.

by Anonymousreply 143August 9, 2016 4:22 PM

R142 I get your drift but Light as Karen became iconic.

by Anonymousreply 144August 9, 2016 5:01 PM

Did you all see Viki Sleestacks 70th birthday videos that Linda Dano posted? Our beloved Viki looks bloated and she has that eye closing tick worse than ever. I wonder what's wrong with her? Anyone know?

by Anonymousreply 145August 9, 2016 6:41 PM

Was Ellen Holly in attendance?

by Anonymousreply 146August 9, 2016 7:19 PM

Holly is a miserable cunt who never let things go. Get over it Ellen. You were fired over 30 years ago!

by Anonymousreply 147August 9, 2016 7:46 PM

Did Brad ever fuck Dorian? Jameson Parker was a much prettier, complex Brad than Fletcher. Fletcher was a hell of a lot sexier though. So I guess that recast was a wash.

by Anonymousreply 148August 9, 2016 10:57 PM

In what world is Steve Fletcher even sexy?

by Anonymousreply 149August 9, 2016 11:10 PM

That's Steve BLIZZARD, thank you very much!

by Anonymousreply 150August 9, 2016 11:25 PM

Where the fuck do I see these videos of Erika??

by Anonymousreply 151August 9, 2016 11:37 PM

Fletcher Blizzard had a very good body, but Jameson was beautiful, a great blond bad boy.

OLTL had a great cast -- more Lead Actress winners than any other soap: Slezak, Strasser, Hillary B. Smith, Haskell (!), and, of course, Light.

by Anonymousreply 152August 9, 2016 11:38 PM

Just found the videos! Erika looks older but WONDERFUL!!!! She does have that little eye squint thing but nothing like described. RSW looks great with a white beard! Anna Holbrook was there and has not AGED A DAY!!! Awesome videos.

by Anonymousreply 153August 9, 2016 11:42 PM

And I LOVED Brynn Thayer as Jenny. I found her stunningly gorgeous. This beautiful green eyes and that wonderful deep voice. Loved her. I loathed that the show killed her off screen in an avalanche. Jenny's and Gabrielle's deaths were horribly done. Gabrielle especially. She was the one OLTL cast member who never got the emmy recognition she deserved!

by Anonymousreply 154August 9, 2016 11:45 PM

I loved Brynn to. When she was given some important stories she was probably my favorite actress on the show. I remember when she had decided to give Mary up to Katrina she went to church to pray and ask god to watch after Mary. It was one of the most heartbreaking, memorable scenes in the shows history. Then when she brought Mary to Katrina.....oh my... That being said she still wasn't Glass. Thayer was always one of those actresses I wanted to see in something outside of soaps. Well she was in Matlock but I don't count that. LOL....I would have loved to see her as a villain in some movie.

by Anonymousreply 155August 10, 2016 12:00 AM

R154, I had no idea that they had killed Jenny offscreen! They Jamie Ewing-ed her!

I may have let out quite the MARY gasp.

Here you go R155!

I like Louise Shaffer a lot, but she was a poor replacement for Maree Cheatham on Search for Tomorrow. Marie was always so much fun to watch as Stephanie, but Louise was just so brittle and cold. Why did Maree leave? Was Mary Stuart threatened by her TOO? I know that Maree had a very contentious relationship with Philip Brown, who played Steve Kendall on the show (later Buck Houston on Loving).

by Anonymousreply 158August 10, 2016 2:30 AM

Schaffer was great as Rae on Ryan's Hope, but unfortunately was frequently paired with Kelli Maroney (Kimberly) who was the worst daytime actress of that generation. Stinkeroo!

by Anonymousreply 159August 10, 2016 5:15 AM

R128, based on somewhat recent events, I would suggest you make a separate ID on YouTube if you're going to upload a lot of that material. Some networks are getting clips removed, and getting accounts terminated.

This means you lose all videos you uploaded not just the ones from one complainer, and you lose all your favorites etc... as well.

Oh and it should be fairly standard, but after all what work converting, once you've uploaded the file, also keep a copy and don't assume it's going to be online forever.

by Anonymousreply 160August 10, 2016 6:58 AM

I loved Kelli Maroney

by Anonymousreply 161August 10, 2016 2:57 PM

R161 She was very trashy looking. She looked like a perennial bar dweller.

by Anonymousreply 162August 10, 2016 3:21 PM

that was the whole point of her character.

by Anonymousreply 163August 10, 2016 3:26 PM

Louise Shaffer and Kelli Maroney are great friends to this day. Kelli looks great. I stalked her Facebook page. She wanted an Emmy so desperately!!!!

by Anonymousreply 164August 11, 2016 8:31 AM

Louise Shaffer had been on Search as Emily Rogers years before taking over for Maree. And supposedly Jo and Stephanie were about ten years apart in age. I think Mary Stuart was 20 years older than Shaffer and 14 or 15 years older than Maree. Shaffer was marvelous as Allison on Where The Heart Is - she was acerbic and called out all the other characters, especially her stuffy brother Julian. Miss that show!

by Anonymousreply 165August 11, 2016 10:18 AM

Doris Belack as Anna Craig on One Life was great. The lady who replaced her - Phyllis somebody? Well she was dull as dull could be.

Alice Hirson was a great replacement for Pat Roe as Eileen Siegel and Pat was very popular in the part.

When Ellen Holly was threatening to leave at one point, she wondered who TPTB would get to replace her and she was told they wouldn't.....they would just talk about Carla as if someone had visited her to keep the idea of Carla alive without airing. That was cold.

by Anonymousreply 166August 12, 2016 9:58 AM

Cold, indeed, R166.

Succeeding in show biz and being valued is all about timing, luck and relationships.

by Anonymousreply 167August 12, 2016 3:28 PM

OLTL should have gone further with Carla and Larry. They should have married them. It seems quaint now but there was so many places they could have gone with that story. One of OLTL's biggest mistakes was killing of Viki's sister Meredith. Again 1,000 places they could have gone with that relationship.

by Anonymousreply 168August 13, 2016 12:52 AM
When Ellen Holly was threatening to leave at one point, she wondered who TPTB would get to replace her and she was told they wouldn't.....they would just talk about Carla as if someone had visited her to keep the idea of Carla alive without airing. That was cold.

The all time cold move was when they fired Ellen's onscreen mom after many years. They packed her boxes up and told her as she was headed to her car she was out...no goodbye, no nothing. That's Paul Rauch who did that.

by Anonymousreply 169August 16, 2016 2:39 PM

r169, the firing of Lillian Hayman in the parking garage is an urban legend. It's just not true. It's a fabrication brought born from arguably justifiably sour grapes and to further sully the name of one of the best producers, if not the best producer, in the biz. Miss Hayman did not even drive to work! And Agnes had the go-ahead to move Carla and Sadie over to Loving, but Ellen wouldn't hear of it. There are two sides to every story.

by Anonymousreply 170August 16, 2016 2:43 PM

R170 Rauch was the most ambitious producer in the biz, but hardly the best. He would have sold your mother to White Slavery if he could get a ratings point. His antics at CBS before he became EP at Another World was legendary. He was a double agent, deliberately trying to torpedo CBS soaps to help NBC. He was known at Procter and Gamble for that, and he was celebrated for it.

by Anonymousreply 171August 16, 2016 4:15 PM

That fat thing Haymen couldn't get behind the wheel of a car so that story is bullshit. She may have taken cabs, but she wouldn't have been in a parking garage hailing a can. Urban legend, just like Holly claiming that our beloved Sleestack said derogetory things about her. Never happened.

by Anonymousreply 172August 16, 2016 4:39 PM

Seriously r172. LH driving to work is laughable. Exactly, if she didn't take public transportation, then she probably took cabs, and she wouldn't be hailing a cab from an underground garage. The story is not atall true. Pure bullshit, probably courtesy of Ellen Holly. Rauch was no saint, believe me, but he made OLTL the most electric and watchable soap during the second half of the '80s. I'm glad LH and Holly were gone. They served a purpose during the show's early years, but they became useless. There was no place for either of those two in Paul Rauch's vision of OLTL.

by Anonymousreply 173August 16, 2016 5:07 PM

Maybe another cast member was giving her a lift home.

by Anonymousreply 174August 16, 2016 5:10 PM

It's in Holly's book. Not quite an urban legend.

by Anonymousreply 175August 16, 2016 5:10 PM

Then it MUST be true if it's in bitter Holly's book. I just can't picture an obese, aging actress who could barely walk driving a car into work in NYC.

by Anonymousreply 176August 16, 2016 5:15 PM

Speaking of producers, anything on the late Jackie Babbin? She was a great exec producer of AMC from '82 to '86. Well, 1985 sucked--maybe that's why she was out by '86. The actors SEEMED to like her...

by Anonymousreply 177August 16, 2016 6:14 PM

Was she out, R177?

by Anonymousreply 178August 16, 2016 6:30 PM

Jackie was a big lez. Very domineering. Think Rosie.

by Anonymousreply 179August 16, 2016 7:42 PM

AMC behind the scenes was a cokefest during much of Babbin's reign. Evidently, when they went on location on a yacht to tape Tony and Jenny's engagement party in 1983/84, most of the cast was high and one of the major female players almost fell overboard. Babbin was a really good producer in that she had a consistent vision for the show, for the most part. However, ratings began to sag in 1985 thanks to losing a chunk of their popular female cast in a very short period of time (Dorothy Lyman, Kim Delaney, Taylor Miller, Marcy Walker, Gillian Spencer) and the resurgence of time slot competitor Days, so, probably out of desperation, she began to add some Days-like action-adventure stories, decrease screen time for the vets, and quicken the pace, much to the show's detriment. Fun fact (or maybe not): her real-life cat Bonkers played Daisy's cat Bonkers.

by Anonymousreply 180August 16, 2016 7:46 PM

ALL the NYC soaps were cokefests in the early 80s. Apparently Guiding Light was Cocaine Central.

by Anonymousreply 181August 16, 2016 8:20 PM

Thanks for the info R180. I had forgotten about Bonkers! I don't think I recall any other pet being used so much. I loved Bonkers, and love that AMC actually wrote his death in--Daisy was so sad!

by Anonymousreply 182August 16, 2016 8:48 PM
she began to add some Days-like action-adventure stories,

That would explain things like Jeremy the Budhist monk, ex-mercenary, who sometimes had psychic visions, and having Adam being so obsessed with Erica he kidnapped her and held her captive in Canada, and the occasional South or Central America story - although one of those adventures had Erica and Brooke forced to work together which is always a good thing. The other one had an annoying revolutionary who was supposed to come in between Nina and back from the dead Clliff, and a similar character a few years later who was supposed to come between Jeremy and Natalie who also brought him a grown son and a story that introduced Trevor Dillon.

by Anonymousreply 183August 16, 2016 10:54 PM

"Dorothy Lyman, Kim Delaney, Taylor Miller, Marcy Walker, Gillian Spencer"

Could you imagine being the writer and/or producer of AMC and losing all of them in such a short period of time? I certainly would have panicked. But in my desperation I wouldn't have recast faux Silver.

by Anonymousreply 184August 16, 2016 11:05 PM

If someone was giving Sadie a lift I hope they had a crane. I used to sit on the edge of my seat listening to her talk wonder if she was going to be able to finish her scene without having a heart attack.

by Anonymousreply 185August 16, 2016 11:22 PM

The idea that Lillian Hayman drove to work is ludicrous. Ellen Holly made some outrageous claims about Agnes and La Sleestak, so I have no reason to believe that her claim about Hayman's firing is any less outrageous. I'm sure it couldn't have been pleasant for Hayman, one of the few (three?) remaining original actors, to be fired after nearly 20 years, but I really can't believe that it wasn't handled in a somewhat dignified manner.

by Anonymousreply 186August 17, 2016 12:08 AM

Were all of you shocked as fuck when they blew Jenny up?

by Anonymousreply 187August 17, 2016 12:11 AM

Please, there were more flames emanating fro Larry Lau and MEK on the beach than Jenny's blown up jet ski,

by Anonymousreply 188August 17, 2016 12:19 AM

MEK would have given his right leg to slob Larry's knob.

by Anonymousreply 189August 17, 2016 12:20 AM

R187 It was so poorly done who thought she was actually dead!

by Anonymousreply 190August 17, 2016 12:22 AM

Geez, looking back, AMC's entire young cast was gay and/or pinged to high heaven: MEK, Larry Lau, Darnell Williams, Amanda Bearse, Bill Timoney, Kim Delaney and Marcy Walker. And then there was Bob Gentry, James Mitchell, Louis Edmonds, Jean LeClerc, Elizabeth Lawrence, Jo Henderson. Damn, was anyone besides Lucci and Barr actually straight?

by Anonymousreply 194August 17, 2016 1:05 AM

R185 LOL! As if Hayman could walk to a parking garage and drive herself. Please. She was indeed obese and could barely walk by the time Rauch canned her.

by Anonymousreply 195August 17, 2016 1:23 AM

r194. What rock did you climb out from under?

Dack died of AIDS in 1994. When he announced that he was HIV positive and retiring from AW in 1991, he also announced he was bisexual. Later, he talked about the cast of Dallas not being very welcoming to him and believed it was because he was gay.

During his time at AMC, he apparently had boy toys in and out of his dressing room regularly.

by Anonymousreply 196August 17, 2016 1:25 AM

Dack gave and got alot of blowjobs in his AMC dressing room. It was well known around the studio not to sit on the sofa in his dressing room for fear that you'd get cum on your clothes.

by Anonymousreply 197August 17, 2016 7:03 AM

It must have been fabulous to be young and living in NYC in the 80s on a top rated soap like AMC. No wonder most of them partied hard.

But yeah, about 85% of the men on AMC pinged to the high heavens. And quite a few of the ladies, too.

by Anonymousreply 198August 17, 2016 1:47 PM

Anyone recognize who this soap star is topping Seth Santoro bareback? You can't see the face very well.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 199August 17, 2016 8:05 PM

During the height of AMC....Jenny, Greg, Opal, Jesse......etc....how much do you think the top stars made? When they were at the height of their popularity how much do you thing Kim and Larry made?

by Anonymousreply 200August 17, 2016 10:05 PM

No idea how much AMC paid, but ABC paid the best of the New York based soaps.

The LA based soaps were known to pay more. Sometime after Marcy Walker moved to Santa Barbara to play Eden, she commented in an interview something to the effect of the pay she received while on a two week vacation was more than what her father made in an entire year.

by Anonymousreply 201August 17, 2016 10:39 PM

I doubt that even at their height of fame, Larry Lau, Darnell Williams, Marcy Walker, and Kim Delaney weren't making that much. I assume that Debbi Morgan started out higher than them, as she already had some notable acting credits under her belt. MEK probably wasn't making much to start either, but when he left the show in 86 and then returned in 88, I'm guessing he was able to negotiate for substantially more. I think that after Lucci, David Canary was their highest paid actor.

by Anonymousreply 202August 18, 2016 1:59 AM

They probably got what new young characters on contract get now. About $120 thousand a year. Back then it was a lot of money.

by Anonymousreply 203August 18, 2016 2:15 AM

they must have been glad to get rid of Kim

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 204August 18, 2016 2:27 AM

Kim gave the show very short notice when she quit. Agnes said that it happened so quickly, that she didn't have time to pen a better exit story for Jenny. The jet ski thing was essentially concocted on the fly. Larry Lau (and viewers) hated the Sheila/Jenny look-a-like storyline. After that tanked, the writers really didn't know what to do with Greg. His father was very ill at the time too, and would soon pass away, so 1984-1985 wasn't a great time period for Lau.

by Anonymousreply 205August 18, 2016 4:39 AM

That cunt who played his mother was pretty damn good.

by Anonymousreply 206August 18, 2016 5:00 AM

Lillian Hayman's Sadie was a good friend to Anna Wolek before she married Jim Craig. Sadie was a beloved character who deserved better. Paul Rauch paraded on and on about bringing a black family - The Metcalfs - to Another World and he did NOTHING with them. Rosetta DeNoire was cast as the Mother and she was on once every 2 weeks. Micki Grant who left the show to do Don't Bother Me, I Can't Cope detested Paul Rauch. He had told her the ony way she would be interesting is if AW could do a John/Peggy love affair but then told her the sponsors said the grannies would be picketing the studio in Brooklyn and they didn't have riot protection on their insurance. True story.

R208 Colored couple? Your fucking statement doesn't deserve a response cuntface!

by Anonymousreply 209August 18, 2016 11:53 PM

R204 she looks like a demented Joanna Going now. How sad she was on top of the world.......

by Anonymousreply 210August 18, 2016 11:54 PM

When, how, and why did Kim Delaney get like that? What a fucking mess.

by Anonymousreply 211August 19, 2016 12:02 AM

The coloreds were Bryan and Claudia. They also had a Simone on there who was colored and Tommy Baldwin fucked her and that gave Audrey a colored grandkid.

Michael Learned filling in as Katherine Chancellor was pretty bad, so was Clementine Ford as her granddaughter Mac (she looked like she was in her 40's!) and the guy who replaced Shemar Moore as Malcolm was dreadful as was the woman playing his fiancee, even though she wasn't a recast.

by Anonymousreply 215August 19, 2016 1:23 AM

I want bread.

by Anonymousreply 216August 19, 2016 1:24 AM

I guess all of the talk about Heather Rattray as 'Lily' on ATWT was on the first thread.

It wasn't that it was such a tough job to replace Martha Byrne ........ they just literally brought her on as this unrecognizable ice princess and then they softened her up by literally letting down her hair.

by Anonymousreply 217August 19, 2016 2:24 AM

According to SON, Y&R hit new lows for the second straight week in the 18-49 demo and lost a ton of HH's. Why is it bleeding viewers? Is the show that terrible? I thought Susan Flann...er, Mal Young, was supposed to be getting the show back on track.

by Anonymousreply 218August 19, 2016 3:34 AM

R217 I loved Heather Rattray. Such an improvement.

by Anonymousreply 219August 19, 2016 4:24 AM

R218, as long as Pratt is HW, Y&R will continue to suck.

by Anonymousreply 220August 19, 2016 4:29 AM

Y&R has sucked for years, R220.

by Anonymousreply 221August 19, 2016 4:34 AM

OMG the Shemar replacement was some big fat ugly guy who had no sex appeal at all. Bizarre to say the least.

Brooke Bundy as Diana Taylor was not good. I loved Valerie Starrett and there was no good reason to be rid of her. Perhaps Denise Alexander didn't want the competition?

by Anonymousreply 222August 19, 2016 10:08 AM

R212 and R213 Go to Stormfront motherfuckers . Mudhsharks and coloreds are racist terms. Go back to your down low glory holes and leave us alone.

by Anonymousreply 225August 19, 2016 12:55 PM

I never thought I'd feel compelled to block people on soap threads.

by Anonymousreply 227August 19, 2016 1:59 PM

Totally agree about Melanie Smith being a born natural, would have looked just as amazing filling up a 25ft high screen as she looked on TV. That blonde Kelley woman who replaced her was a terrible choice as a recast (she wasn't too bad in her first year, but became AWFUL after she hooked up with Hensley).

by Anonymousreply 228August 22, 2016 7:33 AM

Oh no 227 doesn't like an Enid Nelson riff.

by Anonymousreply 229August 22, 2016 9:44 PM

Eden Riegl as Heather Stevens ??? Lind as Bianca Montgomery

by Anonymousreply 231August 26, 2016 1:34 AM

Not a recast per say, more like a replacement. Remember Whitney Baker played by Deborah Rennard? She was brought on as a Marlena "lookalike" during the latter part of Halls absence. She was a clinical psychiatrist the same as Marlena (played with similar affectation), with John also her protector. Her storyline led to Deidre's return and the destruction of John and Isabella as a couple.

R232, wow; Sly really could play something other than Sly!

Bonus: A Neil Curtis appearance!

by Anonymousreply 234September 12, 2016 12:27 AM

I have no memory whatsoever of this character. According to imdb "Whitney Baker" was played by 3 different actresses between 89' and 91' -- Pamela Saunders and Claire Yarlett followed by Deborah Rennard. All three kind of looked somewhat like Hall, but "Sly" was really a dead ringer for her!

by Anonymousreply 235September 12, 2016 11:36 AM

Josh Taylor as Roman Brady. I don't care if played the role the longest - he is not Roman Brady.

Stacy Haiduk as Kristen Blake/DiMera. You can't recast someone like Elieen Davidson.

by Anonymousreply 236June 11, 2019 8:51 AM

R236, I think Haiduk has done a great job and has surprised many with how she's made Kristen her own.

by Anonymousreply 237February 4, 2020 5:17 AM

Stacy Haiduk is fine as Susan but not great as Kristen... I miss Eileen

by Anonymousreply 238February 4, 2020 9:25 AM

Dallas, nighttime but still a soap, had some shit recasts

Of course Donna Reed replacing Barbara Bel Geddes as Miss Ellie, only to be fired and Sue the show and die shortly after, and for BBG to take the role back

Priscilla Presley was TERRIBLE as Jenna Wade #3, and oddly enough was the longest to.play the role (5 years!), the producers originally wanted the original Jenna, Morgan Fairchild back, but she turned them down

Don't even get me started on Margaret Michael's (brief) run as Pam Ewing after Victoria Principal left, they actually we're gonna keep her on with a contract as the new Pam but viewers weren't having it , so after she crashed into that oil tanker, they gave her a brain tumor, I think, and wrote her off the show

by Anonymousreply 239February 4, 2020 9:52 AM

I think Dallas had the most recasts ever for a primetime show, I think 9 or 10 roles were recast throughout the 14 years, heck THREE actresses played Jenna Wade

And they were gonna recast JR after he was shot in 1980, he was gonna wake up from his coma with a new face and played by Robert Culp, but they made a last minute deal with Larry Hagman to continue on

They also wanted to recast Jock Ewing with Steve Forrest, so they did a "amnesiac who claims to be a back from the dead Jock" storyline but audiences rejected it and the real Jock stayed dead and he was revealed to be an imposter

by Anonymousreply 240February 4, 2020 2:20 PM

That other Brian Greene instead of Danny Markel as Sam Fowler on Another World.

Speaking of Danny Markel, he is scheduled to appear on an old ep of Murder, She Wrote, tomorrow (Thursday, 2/6/20), 8:00 AM eastern on COZI TV. He was my favorite soap actor of all time, so I have my alarm set for 7:55.

by Anonymousreply 241February 5, 2020 6:10 PM

Wes Parmalee wasn't Jock Ewing! He was really Ben Stivers!

by Anonymousreply 242February 6, 2020 1:34 AM

the Guiding Light recasts bothered the heck out of me as the originals were so damn good.

Chris Bernau was the only Alan.

Beverlee McKinsey was the only Alexandra

Grant Aleksander was the only Phillip!

Kathleen Cullen was the only Amanda!

I go back and forth on Carl Evans and Rick Hearst. Carl was a boy. Rick played a young man/young adult. If paired with Harley, then I'd go with Carl; if paired with Blake, I'd go with Hearst.

by Anonymousreply 243February 6, 2020 1:37 AM

I'm saying Cassie DePaiva as Eve Donovan only because she was too old and so different than Charlotte Ross. It worked out, but I had to think of Eve as a different character.

by Anonymousreply 244February 20, 2020 2:59 PM

Schoche Marin. She looks like Olympia Dukakis meets a photoshopped with a drinking problem,.

by Anonymousreply 245February 20, 2020 3:08 PM

Patrick Duffy HATED Morgan Fairchild and nixed her coming back. She was great as Jenna in that one ep and would have been a worthy adversary for Linda Gray and Principal. Hell, Morgan was FROM Dallas! Pris Presley was a wet noodle.

by Anonymousreply 246February 20, 2020 3:23 PM

Ladies and Gents BENNYE GATTEYS!! Such a limp actress compared to Denise Alexander's Susan Martin on Days. The character was never the same.

by Anonymousreply 247February 20, 2020 3:25 PM

The Ronn Moss/Ridge recast. BRad Bell pretty much said, he could not just recast a look a like and decided if he was going to recast Ridge he was going to go a complete 180.

by Anonymousreply 248February 20, 2020 3:45 PM

They should have had Madame Tussaud supply Ron Moss' replacement. It wouldn't have looked less waxen.

Fans call nuRidge "Hobo Ridge" -- he looks like a hobo.

by Anonymousreply 251February 21, 2020 2:31 AM

how could Patrick HATE Morgan after one episode?

by Anonymousreply 252February 21, 2020 2:32 AM

r251 Honestly I don't know how he got the role. Brad has a tendency to like actors from other soaps over talent. Not that hobo ridge is a bad actor - just Ronn was wooden as fuck but he was Ridge. Just like Drake Hodgeystn (sp?) is the only Romam/John anyone could ever see in the role - yeah he reads lines like he is taking a shit but it is him. For Ridge it was a lot to expect the public to go from seening cheek bones that could cut diamonds to a short hobbet faced Englishman pretending to be murican. Fun Fact - Ron Moss is 67 years old, Thorston Kaye - is 53. Moss could almost be Kaye's father.

by Anonymousreply 253February 21, 2020 3:26 AM

Worst recast- GL! Cynthia Watros' Annie for Sygny Coleman or whatever her name is. WHAAAAT?

by Anonymousreply 254February 21, 2020 3:49 AM

No worst recast - Sharri Shattuck as Ashley Newman.

by Anonymousreply 255February 21, 2020 3:50 AM

Judi Evans as Paulina Cory. Cali Timmins was everything in that role. Judi Evans made Paulina a frau.

by Anonymousreply 256February 21, 2020 3:54 AM

I remember when Shattuck said she was cast as Ashley and she had screen-tested with Bergman and either Braeden or Jerry Douglas; someone said, oh, Peter needs a love interest you'll be great.

And she says: I'm playing his sister.

The person KNEW she'd been cast as Ashley, but it just didn't register.

by Anonymousreply 257February 21, 2020 4:44 AM

LOL Shattuck got the role because she was fucking Ronn Moss. Just like Catherine Hickland replacing Kimberly Beck on Capital because she was fucking David Hasselhoff who was still CLOSE to John Conboy.

by Anonymousreply 258February 21, 2020 1:46 PM

AMC had some great recasts, but some real stinkers, too. I hated that “Liza” that Jamie Luner played toward the end. She’s not a bad actress, but that was NOT Liza Colby!

by Anonymousreply 259February 21, 2020 2:45 PM

R259 who were those unfortunate actresses to play Nina? Heather Stamford who had total bitch face (and would have made a GREAT villainess) and some heavy set redhead.

by Anonymousreply 260February 21, 2020 2:55 PM

r258 funny story - Hasselhoff's wife was cast as Sharon's mother as a favor to Hasselhoff and she was so bad she was fired her first day.

by Anonymousreply 261February 21, 2020 3:03 PM

No, R261, she was cast as Mari Jo Mason, the role that later went to Diana Barton.

Barton was exotic, sophisticated, stunning...

The show's publicist quipped at the time Pamela Bach (Hasselhoff's then-wife) would be 'bach' in another role, but that never came to be.

by Anonymousreply 262February 23, 2020 2:54 AM

I didn't mind Jamie Lunar as Liza, even though she was badly miscast. They'd ruined the Liza character when Marcy Walker was still playing the role anyway, plus Luner added a little spark to the show. They could've used her a lot better, though. They should had her be Julie Chandler though, her looks and age were a better fit for that character.

Heather Stanford was a terrible actress. She had a very odd way of delivering her lines. It was obvious she was cast because she resembled Taylor Miller. I think they really wanted her work, and waited a year before cutting her.

Barbara Kearns, the redhead, was totally miscast as Nina. She was an ok actress, though.

by Anonymousreply 263February 23, 2020 3:19 AM

Speaking of John Conboy, he cast Marty West as Shayne on GL, and the consensus is that he did so because Marty was very receptive to whatever John was dishing out (or lapping up) on the casting cooch.

by Anonymousreply 264February 23, 2020 3:23 AM

R233 Mia Korf got some bad reviews as Blair but I'm not sure why, she was fine.

by Anonymousreply 265February 23, 2020 3:26 AM

Replacing Gillian Spencer with Erika Slezak was a big mistake. ES never "got" the characters she was playing, particularly Nicki. (Her first rendition of Nicki was like from another planet).

by Anonymousreply 266February 23, 2020 3:30 AM

I preferred Korf to KDP as well.

Imagine the outrage on the internet if that recast happened today. Asian actress replaced by a white, southern blonde actress.

by Anonymousreply 267February 23, 2020 3:31 AM
Judi Evans as Paulina Cory. Cali Timmins was everything in that role. Judi Evans made Paulina a frau.

Judi Evans WAS a frau -- every role she ever played came off as a dumpy, whiny, ugly woman past her prime. Her idea of "acting" was to make faces, while sobbing and/or shrieking. I hope she's gone for good!

Marcy Walker played Liza like an icy Nordic cerebral beauty; and Luner was all leggy and extroverted. and heart on her sleave.

Worst recast ever.

Chuck Pratt was writing and he gave his old Melrose Place 0r Savannah pal a job.

It's how the business works. But boy did AMC have a sucky last few years.

by Anonymousreply 270February 23, 2020 4:10 AM

R270 YES.

And Luner wasn't bad, but she should have been a new character.

ATWT had that issue toward the end, where they kept bringing in new actors to play popular old characters - and the new take on the characters was a total 180 from what came before.

by Anonymousreply 271February 23, 2020 4:17 AM

r262 oh yeah ..I knew it was some role she was fired in a day. I could have sworn it was Sharon's mother.
I could have sworn it was Sharon's mother.

Did Doris die? Why haven't she and Sharon at least talked on the phone? As spiteful as Nikki is towards Sharon, I'd think she'd have asked "Have you spoken with your mother?" when Sharon did her cancer reveal.

Janice Ferri Esser should have caught this one.

Hated faux Max on OLTL okay actor not a good fit so much so they changed the character to make him more of a typical leading man not the rogue he once was.

by Anonymousreply 280February 23, 2020 5:32 PM

r280 - you mean the one they spent months explaining the plastic surgery then when they brought back og MAX he just meditates and gets his own face back? Or how about Kassie DePavia being cast as Blair Cramer the half japanese niece of Dorian who suddenly was no longer half japanese when DePavia took over the role? As in all references to Blair being half asian were wiped out.

by Anonymousreply 281February 24, 2020 2:14 AM

Recasts on ATWT:

Margo Hughes: I loved Margaret Colin as Margo, and hated Hillary Smith when she took over. But HBS gradually won me over and became my favorite Margo.

Craig Montgomery: Scott Bryce made Craig a complex villain who turned into a complex hero. Hunt Block made the character a cartoon. Third Craig Jon Lindstom did the unthinkable...he made Craig boring.

Dusty Donovan: Brian Bloom was hot stuff as young Dusty, not a great actor, but THOSE EYES! Grayson McCouch might as well have been playing a totally different character.

The worst ever though were the recasts for Connor and Paul. Allyson Rice Taylor was classy and polished, her replacement was a hick rube. Scott Holroyd was perfect as the conflicted son of Barbara and James. Why in God's name they replaced him with the Walking Ham Roger Howarth is beyond me.

by Anonymousreply 284February 24, 2020 2:58 AM

Did anyone like any of the million Chris Hugheses on ATWT?

These were the adult Chris Hugheses:

Ben Jorgensen (1999)

Paul Korver (1999-2001)

Alan White (2002)

Bailey Chase (2003-2005)

Dylan Bruce (2007-2008)

The Nursing Home Cat, Daniel Cosgrove (2010)

Personally I enjoyed Bailey Chase the most in the role. He was cute and could act. He and Alison were good together I thought...

by Anonymousreply 285February 24, 2020 3:07 AM

R285, Paul Korver couldn't act for shit, but he could disrobe with the best of them.

by Anonymousreply 286February 24, 2020 3:12 AM

one of the worst recasts ever was Scott Holmes taking over for Greg Marx.

Greg was great in the role; Scott played Tom as very pompous in that Mike Bauer way.

by Anonymousreply 287February 24, 2020 7:15 AM

r287 and Greg Marx was sex on a stick and Scott Holmes. was....not.

I think the worst re-cast was Brenda Epperson as Ashely Abbott - it was like the recast Elieen Davidson with Jessica Simpson. She was younger, less exotic and had zero chemistry with Victor. It looked like he was trying to fuck his grand daughter.

by Anonymousreply 288February 24, 2020 8:40 PM

R288, yes, that's why it's not always good to go with a look alike. Though Carrie Genzel, who resembles Heather Tom, was thisclose to getting the role of Victoria.

They went with Amelia who looks kind of like a waif. But she has two Emmys so what do I know?

Some people just ARE the roles; Grant Aleksander, Eileen Davidson (Ashley) -- ironically, I think Stacy Haiduk is doing a fantastic job as Kristen.

by Anonymousreply 289February 24, 2020 9:30 PM

r289 she played crazy well on Y&R so it fits.

Kristen isn’t supposed to be just crazy. That’s mainly the problem. Eileen played her multi-layered and faceted. Stacy is one note and she’s hard to even look at.

by Anonymousreply 293February 25, 2020 12:41 AM

What's up with all the Stacy-hate, guys?

Er, I mean, right on!

by Anonymousreply 294February 25, 2020 3:37 AM

People think she’s a good actress, just not right for the part. The comment you see the most is: “She’s good, but she just isn’t Kristen.” She really should be given her own new character. Leave Kristen and Susan and everyone else to Eileen. Stacy is 10 years younger than Eileen, Eileen was 10 years younger than Deidre. The show tries not to have Stacy vs Deidre because the age difference is ridiculous - 20 years. We’re supposed to believe Stacy was in love with old fart John??? It just doesn’t work. The show expect Eileen to return after Stacy filled in. Ironically, Eileen wants to return now. She has said repeatedly that she just doesn’t know if Days would be interested with what they’ve got going on over there now, ie Stacy. Eileen is doing a film by Blake Berris and recently fired Galen.

by Anonymousreply 295February 25, 2020 3:48 AM

the DiMera daughter I'd like to see resurrected is Megan. She was loads of fun and was killed off in haste, it seems.

by Anonymousreply 296March 1, 2020 5:31 PM

Eileen fired Galen? What was he doing for her?

by Anonymousreply 297March 12, 2020 7:27 PM

by Anonymousreply 298March 12, 2020 9:41 PM
Ironically, Eileen wants to return now. She has said repeatedly that she just doesn’t know if Days would be interested with what they’ve got going on over there now, ie Stacy.

If that's true, the real point is that DOOL knows Stacy is willing to work on their terms for a reasonable salary - Eileen wanted more money and a say in when/how much he worked.

by Anonymousreply 302March 13, 2020 1:14 AM

I think if Stacy submits the big Kristen/Nicole reveal she can win the Supporting Actress Emmy.

Or who knows, maybe lead?

I think lead could be interesting is Stafford submitted as Nina and/or Phyllis; if Watros did as Nina and if Tognoni did for Phyllis.

Then again, with coronavirus, there may not be an Emmys.

Worse recast - Krista Tesreau as Tina Lord Roberts on One Life to Live

by Anonymousreply 312January 15, 2022 9:54 PM
This Marcus guy as nikolas on general hospital is a strong contender for this title.

Marcus Coloma is far from the worst recast ever. That's not saying he's good in the role; its just saying there have been worse recasts than him.

The bigger mystery is how he's managed to keep his job for over two years. She have been replaced after 13 weeks. 26 weeks at the max.

by Anonymousreply 313January 16, 2022 12:39 AM

Marcus Coloma lacks the acting skills and physical demeanor for the role.

He's dead behind the eyes and just recites lines.

I'm baffled as to why he is still employed.

by Anonymousreply 314January 16, 2022 1:42 AM

The worst recast is Ellen Parker as Fat Maureen on THE GL! What a boring actress and character! No wonder JFP let the focus groups have their way by killing off Maureen!

by Anonymousreply 315January 16, 2022 1:52 AM

Karen Witter was married to mega TV producer Chuck Lorre. She probably got a huge divorce settlement.

by Anonymousreply 316January 16, 2022 2:57 AM

Saundra Quaterman was a terrible substitute for Debbi Morgan on AMC, but she did have a long run on Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper.

You just can’t recast Angie and Jesse.

by Anonymousreply 317January 16, 2022 3:00 AM

I liked Carrie Ganzel as Skye on AMC well enough, but you can’t beat Robin Christopher. Robin was a (great) recast herself. The first Skye was this annoying brunette Australian actress. I always hated they moved Skye to General Hospital and made her a Quatermaine.

by Anonymousreply 318January 16, 2022 3:03 AM

Frank Grillo was totally wrong as a recast Hart Jessup. Did anyone buy him as a Midwestern farm boy? Hart's first story was literally about him losing his farm! Grillo came across as the New York-Italian he is.

While I'm at it, I'll add Nathaniel Marston as Al Holding. I can't recall much about the guys before him, but I always felt he was miscast. He just didn't seem like anything Max/Gabrielle would create in looks or character. He was very intense and rough around the edges, grating at times. I know many fans loved him, but he always puzzled me.

I accepted him more as Michael McBain, mostly because his character and stories usually didn't have much contact with my favorites. Easy fast-forwarding.

Marcus coloma. Not that Tyler wasn’t irreplaceable (he is replaceable) but Marcus is the worst. Recast stat!
