It's like comfort food, safe and heartwarming. I usually enjoy a few episodes at the beginning of the season until I then forget it at some point. If there are hot guys I might last almost until the end. The show is being made in various countries but from the ones I've seen the UK one is the only that truly works perfectly.

The judges are so complimentary to the bakers, and seem genuinely crushed when they have to send someone home. The other bakers are practically in tears when someone else leaves.
I like how there are no prizes. It's all for the experience.
An American version would require cash, gifts and the promise of fame and glamour.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | July 2, 2016 5:22 AM |
R9, it seems many of the earlier winners have turned the win into a career. Before the finale of this season The Daily Mail wrote the winner might end up earning up to ยฃ1M from all the work they'll be getting.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | July 2, 2016 12:35 PM |
Its great to see everyday people turn their passion for baking into a career through book deals, newspaper columns, and tv appearances. And all the bakers are truly nice people, which makes a change from the fame-hungry/drama-creating contestants from the likes of Big Brother etc.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | July 2, 2016 3:01 PM |
R11, yeah well I still wouldn't forget that this is a very controlled reality tv show you're seeing. One part of the script is that the contestants seem nice and normal. I'm not saying the contestants are exactly being fed the lines but they themselves know that they have to behave the certain way. And I'm not saying it's wrong at all and personally I enjoy watching this kind of show much more than the average reality competitions with aggressive contestants.
You see the "fake" niceness when you watch this show's foreign versions. Something feels a bit off in them. Like I said earlier the UK version is the only one that really has the perfect combination of niceness, comedy and steel cold evil (Paul and Mary at times) in it.

I want to audition for the American version, but I don't know if it's coming back again this year.

by Anonymous | reply 14 | July 2, 2016 3:19 PM |
I like the types of food they bake - bread, cake, biscuits, desserts - but most of the bakers include too many ingredients that wouldn't appeal to me.
They're always mixing in apricots, nuts, onions, garlic, spices, or something that would dominate the flavor, like orange-flavored chocolate.

It is. They picked up a full American season and a second round of the the abbreviated Great Holiday Baking Show that aired last winter. It's going to be on ABC, filmed in the Tent in England, and judged by Mary.
They made cream horns this week. I'd like to taste Tamal's.

I work as a Brand Soecialist for KitchenAid in the UK. I've met a lot of these contestants dating back to Season 1 onward at trade shows and PR events and they are all, by and large, very nice. And it's not just the winner that benefits - at present usually three a series get book deals, sponsorships and columns in broadsheet newspapers. They do have to be genuinely passionate about baking.
The BBC usually revisits a series' contestants in a special programme the following year which is really fun. And KitchenAid - whom some consider to be the star of the show - is back on the bakers' work tops this year!

Like others have said, I usually watch the first few eps and then forget it's on until the end. Mary seems so terribly elegant, the kind of refinement one can only get from having a lifetime of so much privilege that you spend all your days thinking about the perfect crunch on cookies. I've read that if any one of the contestants bursts into tears or has a real meltdown, the hosts gather around them and start saying brand names and swear words so that the footage can't be used to embarrass them on TV, but I don't know how true that is. The lesbian host is just my type, though; she's adorable.

I love this show; it's so refreshing to watch a reality production in which everyone is actually nice and professional.
The estate where they film it is so lovely. Everything about this program is a soothing escape.
Finally, I can't believe Flora was only 19 during filming! She was so composed; I assumed she was 26-28.

by Anonymous | reply 40 | August 15, 2016 5:05 PM |
LOL R36 there's no shame in that, but you know what I mean - she still seems elegant to me! I like the way she speaks to people. If someone's concoction is awful, she says so almost apologetically, as though she shares in their extreme disappointment. Or the glint she gets when she's talking about the perfect ganache or whatever. She always makes me smile.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | August 15, 2016 5:12 PM |
When she was tasting Tamal's final project, she said she'd practiced "rude things" because she hadn't expected to turn out well. Then she found it delicious, and had to struggle for compliments.
She was also so proud of Nadiya that she herself teared up at the end.
I want her to be my grandma.

by Anonymous | reply 50 | September 6, 2016 7:01 PM |
Pillsbury has rights to the word "bake-off" in the U.S., apparently.
Speaking of rights, I hope PBS gets the rights to air the first three (four?) seasons of the show in the US. The first season aired here was, I think, the fifth season of the show.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | September 6, 2016 8:12 PM |
Everyone is in a huge tizzy because the show is moving from the BBC to Channel 4. They're calling it #Breadxit on Twitter.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | September 13, 2016 7:50 PM |
I had been catching bits and pieces here and there but finally sat down and watched all of the first season that was shown in the US (the one that Nancy won.) It was available on Netflix or Amazon (can't remember which one) for free, but the subsequent seasons were $2.99/episode! Is there somewhere where they can be seen for free?
by Anonymous | reply 53 | September 13, 2016 9:55 PM |
Try PBS.org, although it may only be available there when the show is airing.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | September 13, 2016 10:55 PM |
Mel and Sue have left the show so a new presenter needs to step in.
It should be someone cuddly who we could imagine eating cake. Maybe Dawn French or Stephen Fry?
by Anonymous | reply 55 | September 13, 2016 10:59 PM |
This is the biggest thing wrong with the move:
The Great British Bake Off will be moving from the BBC to Channel 4 without hosts Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins.
I've watched the show from maybe 4 or 5 countries and the Brit version is the only that truly works BECAUSE of the perfect balance of the four hosts.
BTW, the new season is at its fourth week currently in the UK.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | September 13, 2016 11:00 PM |
It's the BBC's most popular programme and they should have forked out the money needed to keep it. Channel 4 will just stock it with the young and beautiful and that formula won't draw the same audience numbers. If they hire Davina McCall (as rumoured) that will send more people running for the hills (even worse would be Emma Willis or Caroline Flack).
by Anonymous | reply 57 | September 13, 2016 11:10 PM |
Love Productions, the makers of TGBBO was bought by Rupert Murdoch in 2014. This is all his handiwork. Anything to piss on the BBC's parade even at the expense of this ratings winner.
He knew that the Beeb was financially constrained and so making the negotiations all about money now after several series was an easy spoiling tactic. The utter cunt.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | September 13, 2016 11:18 PM |
I hate that it's leaving the Beeb. Now it will be awful adverts every 10 minutes. Are Mel & Sue definitely out or is it just that they haven't negotiated a C4 deal yet? I suspect any changes to the original formula will kill the ratings. IPersonally, don't think I could stand a season of Davina's squawking if she gets the deal. The only things worse would be Holly Willabooby or Emma Willis.

I just found Season 1 (which I don't think ever aired in the US) of the Bake-Off on YouTube and have watched the first two episodes. The format was somewhat different back then (the copyright date is 2010, so I guess that's when it was filmed.) They started out with ten bakers, but eliminate TWO each week. The judges don't rank the technical challenge competition from first to last like they do in the current version. And there's no "Star Baker" award. They also take the tent and the entire production to a different location in GB each week, which must have been a challenge.
And there are a lot of historical featurettes by Mel and Sue throughout the program, which I find fascinating. Mostly about the history of food and its connection to the locale they're visiting that week. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of Season 1 and then hopefully finding Season 2 (which also never aired in the US) on YouTube as well.

The seasons in order of my preference: 6, 5, 1, 3, 2, 4

I watched Season One of the Norwegian version. One of the cooks placed her cakes on a cooling rack on the floor by her station for some reason only for another contestant to tread all over them inadvertantly. It was even funnier than Dianagate.

R79, I concur. Andrew is a cute ginger in a dorky way. My favourite contestant this season is Val who is delightfully cuckoo. She's a former primary school Head Teacher so she has an answer to everything.
I also recommend "The Great British Bake Off: An Extra Slice" with Jo Brand. The current season is available on YouTube. The show features the baker who has been eliminated for the week plus 3 different celebrity Bake Off fans.

Last weekend I caught a "spin-off" program for TGBBO... it's a masterclass program with just Paul and Mary. They re-create items that they gave the contestants to bake. Mary re-creates three recipes as does Paul. I really enjoyed the show. P&M seem genuinely entertained with each other. I think there was also some amusement/irritation at how the conduct themselves in the kitchen. The looks they throw at each other are entertaining. Paul's definitely a big ole bear; watch the first episode and see how he throws and beats the dough - g'rrrr.
Look for it on PBS or find it online.

Everyone I know who watches this show says the same thing. It's refreshing, an honest, straight-forward, healthy competition without the juvenile snark and petty, demeaning drama. After a viewing, you feel good (and learn new things) instead of like you got dragged through a presentation of a cut-throat, degrading sewer that only demonstrates the ugly side of competition and humanity.

Just finished watching the British Season 1. I noticed that nearly all of the contestants say "crรจme pรขtisserie" when they're referring to "crรจme pรขtissiรจre." Is this a common usage in the UK? Seems sort of like one of those transposition errors that eventually become accepted (sort of like "chaise lounge" in the US for the correct "chaise longue.")

Actually they seem to do a bit of "stunt casting". They usually have at least one person (usually female) who seems one anxiety attack away from a straight jacket and there's usually at least one males who appears to be a fish out of water--the fireman, the prison warden, etc.

Nah R101, 'dough' isn't a British slang term. As far as food-related UK slang terms for currency go, you'd be more likely to hear 'bread' used. This comes from the Cockney Rhyming slang term 'bread and honey' (rhyming with 'money'), which may be where 'dough' originated.
'Bread' isn't a very common slang term either, though. IMO the most widely-heard terms (at least in London) are 'cash' (sometimes 'on-the-nail), 'quid' & 'dosh'. ยฃ100 is 'a ton', ยฃ1,000 can be 'a bag'. 'a big one' or 'a grand' (see The Streets album 'A Grand Don't Come For Free'). If you went back in time about 30 years, you'd also hear 'shrapnel' & 'brass' (for small change), or 'wedge' & 'wonga' (for large wads of notes).

I think it's a disaster in the making. Mel and Sue were right to leave, and I presume Mary and Paul will follow. We've managed to find most of the different versions to watch. After Britain, South Africa came the closest. Ireland was okay, but America and Australia were awful. At least the American one had Mary Berry. The Australian version consisted of crass product placments, and loud tacky music cues. The British version works so well, mostle because of the chemistry between the two hosts and the two judges. Sorry to see it end.
At least the American one had Mary Berry.
Only the SECOND American version (the Holiday one) had Mary Berry, and that's because it was filmed in England. (Mary wouldn't travel to the US.) The first version had Paul H. and Marcela Valladolid (with whom Paul allegedly had an affair).
by Anonymous | reply 120 | September 16, 2016 5:03 PM |
R120, nothing alleged about the affair, it happened. You only need a quick google to see it was a very public thing in Britain. Hollywood's wife left him for it but later returned to him.
I personally have no trouble believing Hollywood will stay with the franchise if he's paid enough. Nothing wrong with that, this is the biggest thing in his career and I'm sure he wants to see it till the end.

'Dough' absolutely is a British slang term, meaning cash. It's gone out of favour with the youth, but was used a lot last century and is still used amongst 40 plus.

There's going to be another holiday edition and a US series filmed in England. As far as I know, Mary is still one of the judges for both.
I don't know if they've replaced Nia Vardolos and Ian Gomez are the hosts, though.

R128, Hollywood thanked Mary later:
"'I want to thank the BBC and Mel and Sue for making my time in the tent great fun and really rewarding.'I'm staying in the tent with the bakers where I belong. I want to thank Mary. I'll miss her but she has made the right decision for her.'
Hollywood later said he and Berry remain 'great friends', and he explained why he did not mention his co-judge in his original statement.
'When I spoke about my news earlier on, I did not know what Mary was saying about her decision, and more importantly had not been able to speak to her,' he said."

Chuffed it's over, not before time. It was anodyne gutless shite from the jump, fuelled only by desperate camp & pandering.
There were rumours Paul Hollywood favored her because of her looks.
Paul Hollywood seems to flirt with every sexy person in the show, female OR male. The show's sort of always played with him being a big slab of sexy man meat. The silverback gorilla joke has come up many times during the years, mostly from Sue.
I'm not surprised at all Ruby felt apparently sexually threatened by Hollywood even if there wasn't anything behind it, especially if she's really gay. She sounds a bit insufferable. She makes fun of Hollywood being a 'peacocking manchild' and this tweet from her really says all there is to know about her:
"this, from a man who turned up to work revving a rental lamborghini. or was it a ferrari. i don't remember, the air was thick w testosterone"
She obviously can't stand flashy and manly men, and that's exactly what you get with Paul Hollywood.

by Anonymous | reply 160 | October 2, 2016 4:48 AM |
When Hollywood got right up in Nadiya's face and looked into her eyes adoringly, I knew she was going to be the winner. I don't like it when competitions are determined based on judges' hormones.
Until then, I had enjoyed seeing the new and bizarre flavors the bakers would mix along with Mary's fussy categories.

Does anyone else watch TGBBO - Masterclass? It's a show where Mary and Paul re-create some of the recipes they had given the season 6 contestants. It's an easy hour of TV, Mary and Paul seem to get along quite well as friends who needle each other in a gentle manner.
Is this a program produced for PBS? I guess they won't produce anymore episodes with Breadxit...

Finally finished watching the season with Ruby, Kimberley and Frances. Frances was a good choice, but I thought Kimberley was more consistent overall throughout the season. My PBS station doesn't indicate in the cable guide which season each show belongs to, and it gets kind of confusing trying to watch only the ones I haven't seen before. I hope the next batch they show is of the next season, because they're still interspersing their broadcasts with shows from the previous season as well.

It was sad to see the last episode on the BBC: without Mary Berry, Mel & Sue, there is no show as far as I'm concerned. The whole 'is Andrew trans?' debate seems to have been answered, though: they showed him as a young boy in family pictures.

Yes, I was very sad too, knowing that the show as we know it is over for good. And I really didn't care who won as I loved all three. But it was obvious after the third bake that Candice would win. And the idea of Andrew as a transman is ridiculous. All transmen have beards, everybody knows that! The question really is, is he gay?

My PBS station just started to show the season with my future husband Tamal. Was that the most recent one filmed, or is there a later one?
And a question for our British friends-- one of the contestants had a problem with the oven (she forgot to preheat) and said it was because at home she had an "aga," and implied that it was always on. I have no idea what an aga is, and why would someone have an oven that was on all the time? Wouldn't that be wasteful and unnecessarily heat up the kitchen?

[bold]Last laugh for BBC as it retains rights to sell Great British Bake Off format abroad[/bold]
They may have lost the Great British Bake Off to Channel 4, but the BBC may have the last laugh after all. The ongoing deal is thought to be worth millions, and is unaffected by the change of broadcaster for the main UK series. Their commercial arm has confirmed it holds the rights to sell the format abroad until 2028. BBC Worldwide has already sold the showโs format to 23 countries, allowing them to create their own local versions while remunerating Love Productions and feeding money back to the BBC.

by Anonymous | reply 187 | November 4, 2016 2:48 AM |
It's kind of confusing, because I'm watching Season 6 (the Tamal season) on PBS, but I guess when they re-edit it to change the title and do some other edits they add a new copyright date based on when PBS aired/edited it-- it's showing a 2016 copyright, even though I guess in the UK it was shown in 2015.
I'm up through the Desserts episode (which is confusing for Americans, because we think of all sweet stuff as desserts.) Sandy just got eliminated.
I'm fascinated by the quality and diversity of the baked goods. I consider myself something of a foodie, but I've never heard of at least a third of the things they're baking (or some of the ingredients, like pontefract.) Has anyone in the US ever had a Spanische Windtorte?
by Anonymous | reply 188 | November 4, 2016 3:11 AM |
Andrew was over 6 ft tall, definitely not trans. Transmen are rarely skinny and tend to be flabby and have as much facial hair as possible. He was more twinky.

I don't know whether to be shocked or not that so many of you queens are swooning over Andrew...a fellow queen.
Really? I mean, he's sweet but...skinny, androgynous twinks are your big turn on?
Especially since this season had the adorably hot sex god Selasi, with the sexy smirky smile and those bedroom eyes...

I saw a promo last night for the upcoming return of "The Great American Baking Show." Looks like it's Nia and Ian (just realized their names are anagrams of each other), Mary Berry, and Johnny Iuzzini (at least it looked like him.) And it appears to be in the UK once again. (I don't think Mary travels.)
After having watched several iterations of the British counterpart, I can predict I will be almost as ashamed of the American contestants as I was of the American election results. It's terrible they can't find better bakers for this show.

So, how does everybody feel about Prue and Noel? I wasn't prepared to like them because I loved the others so much, but I'm totally impressed. Noel is wonderful - silly and kind and does a fantastic job of keeping the mood light. Prue is no Mary Berry (how could she be), but she's interesting, and that jewelry is a trip. I even like the roly poly blond dyke. She interacts well with Noel. Paul is still just a vain, barrel-chested adulterer. Last week I saw him give out THREE handshakes during one show. That's bloody stupid.
by Anonymous | reply 207 | September 14, 2018 10:55 AM |
Noel always seems like he's trans - does that kind of eccentric affectless Goth femme style read differently in a British context?

I just started watching season 5 on Netflix yesterday. I'm not enamored of the two comic hosts. That guy looks like a goth lesbian vampire. The woman is about as funny as a toothache. I have taken to Paul Hollywood's new co-host Prue. The blatant copying of the former comic host's style is off putting as well. Their '3 2 1 BAKE' imitations make them look sad. Couldn't the producers come up with something new for these two to make their own? I also think they told Hollywood to step up the handshakes.
I'll keep watching it, but I won't enjoy it as much as I did with the old crew.

Paul's ego is annoying. I bet he wanted Mary gone. This new judge finally started standing up to him by the last shows. I also thought he was jealous of the male contestant who won so many of the early shows this season.
