Anton Yelchin dies in car crash at 27

Anton Yelchin, a charismatic and rising actor best known for playing Chekov in the new "Star Trek" films, has died at the age of 27. He was killed in a fatal traffic collision early Sunday morning, his publicist, Jennifer Allen confirmed.

Yelchin started small with roles in indie films and various television shows, before breaking out in films like the crime thriller "Alpha Dog" and the teenage comedy "Charlie Bartlett." His biggest role to date has been in the rebooted "Star Trek" films — the third of which, "Star Trek Beyond" comes out in July.

Yelchin, an only child, was born in Russia. His parents were professional figure skaters who moved the family to the United States when Yelchin was a baby. Yelchin's family requests privacy at this time.

Who???

by Anonymousreply 1June 19, 2016 6:13 PM

Freak accident involving his own car

Awwww RIP. Such a cutie he was.

by Anonymousreply 3June 19, 2016 6:15 PM

Sad. RIP Anton.

by Anonymousreply 4June 19, 2016 6:15 PM

Oh, no way!!! I absolutely loved him!!

His "Chekov" character in Star Trek was one of my favorites, as was the role he played in "Fright Night."

He was so adorable, and he seemed like a very sweet guy.

This is quite a shock. He's not a major Hollywood star, but he will definitely be missed. How sad. :o(

by Anonymousreply 5June 19, 2016 6:18 PM

he was adorable; really stood out as one of the better casting moves in Star Trek, someone who made the role his own, but was so Chekov.

RIP

by Anonymousreply 6June 19, 2016 6:18 PM

Wow, that's terrible. What a freakish thing to happen -- wonder if the car popped out of gear on its own?

by Anonymousreply 7June 19, 2016 6:19 PM

He was cute. Sad.

by Anonymousreply 8June 19, 2016 6:20 PM

But, but, his shirt wasn't red!

by Anonymousreply 9June 19, 2016 6:22 PM

Wow, this is crazy.

[quote]pinned between his car and a brick mailbox, which was attached to a security gate...the engine was still running and the car was in neutral

How on earth did that happen?

by Anonymousreply 10June 19, 2016 6:26 PM

Love Charlie Bartlett. So sad.

by Anonymousreply 11June 19, 2016 6:27 PM

That's sad, he died young. I have watched him in 'Heart of Atlantis' with Anthony Hopkins, in 'Middle of Nowhere' with Susan Sarandon and her dislikable daughter Eva Amurri and of course, in 'Fright Night' with Colin Farrell. He was a decent actor, as far as i remember.

by Anonymousreply 12June 19, 2016 6:28 PM

:( RIP

by Anonymousreply 16June 19, 2016 6:32 PM

Wow, I really liked him, just saw him in "Green Room" recently, and yes he was great in the Star Trek movies.

His death seems weird to me.I wonder if he was really drunk or something

by Anonymousreply 17June 19, 2016 6:33 PM

the gate probably jammed and he left the car running while he went to open it manually

by Anonymousreply 18June 19, 2016 6:33 PM

The curse of 27. Sad.

by Anonymousreply 19June 19, 2016 6:34 PM

I think it was intentional. He did not wanna be in anymore awful Star Trek films.

by Anonymousreply 20June 19, 2016 6:41 PM

Oh, my god. He plays the sweet kid who Justin Timberlake kills in "alpha dog." Watching that made me cry. Sharon Stone — in a fat suit — plays his mom. Sharon's fucking great in that scene. .

R18 that's what I think. The driveway was said to be steep as well.

The Star Trek press tour this summer is gonna be a bit of a downer. Everyone's going to ask about Anton.

by Anonymousreply 22June 19, 2016 6:48 PM

Devastated, have had a major crush on him since the days of Huff. So much life to be lived. Too bad it wasn't Shatner instead, shitsoul at R20.

by Anonymousreply 23June 19, 2016 6:51 PM

I assume they will do a pre-credits tribute, but will they write his death into the end of this film or the beginning of the next one?

by Anonymousreply 24June 19, 2016 6:51 PM

Star Trek is done and set for release next month. I'm assuming they'll recast (but it's not like Chekov did anything of note in the films anyway). Still RIP.

by Anonymousreply 25June 19, 2016 6:53 PM

Walter Koenig's own son committed suicide and now the actor who played his character is dead. Poor man.

by Anonymousreply 26June 19, 2016 6:54 PM

There's going to be more star trek movies? I figured it was only going to be a trilogy.

by Anonymousreply 27June 19, 2016 6:55 PM

[quote]I assume they will do a pre-credits tribute, but will they write his death into the end of this film or the beginning of the next one?

Why would they write a death when Checkov was an old man in the final movies. They will simply recast the role.

by Anonymousreply 28June 19, 2016 6:56 PM

He was really cute and seemed nice.

by Anonymousreply 29June 19, 2016 6:57 PM

Did we think he was gay? I mean, for reasons beyond the reasons we think everyone is gay?

by Anonymousreply 30June 19, 2016 6:57 PM

This sucks I liked him. Why can't this happen to a Kartrashian.

by Anonymousreply 31June 19, 2016 7:01 PM

So cute, so talented. Very sad.

by Anonymousreply 32June 19, 2016 7:02 PM

So sad! Just saw him as a kid (12ish maybe) actor in some random movie a few days ago as I was channel surfing. That's way too young.

by Anonymousreply 33June 19, 2016 7:03 PM

R30, I feel kinda bad discussing this...but he was on my list as a "level 2 ping" due to sheer absence of a public love life. It's likely no one will ever know until an ex-lover mentions it in a memoir 40 years from now.

Also, I don't think they'll recast. They'll likely just drop the character.

Wow, my Sunday's have been crap lately :(

by Anonymousreply 34June 19, 2016 7:03 PM

A very "Final Destination" way to go. Such a shame.

by Anonymousreply 35June 19, 2016 7:04 PM

I wish he had been ugly so his death wouldn't be sad.

by Anonymousreply 36June 19, 2016 7:04 PM

cue some fish to jump in and try and hijack the whole narrative or make him about herself in 5...4..3..

by Anonymousreply 37June 19, 2016 7:04 PM

Very sad. So random. I liked him too. Thought he was very cute. Re watched Fright Night this year and I think Anton was also in Burying The Ex, which I also saw this year.

I hated the movie Alpha Dog ....it was quite good, but the fact that it was based on a true story bummed me out.

Poor Nick. Poor Anton. RIP

by Anonymousreply 38June 19, 2016 7:06 PM

[quote][R30], I feel kinda bad discussing this...but he was on my list as a "level 2 ping" due to sheer absence of a public love life. It's likely no one will ever know until an ex-lover mentions it in a memoir 40 years from now.

Look, anytime someone dies, we wonder about if he was gay, ask for verificatia of sizemeat, and wonder about the iPod. It's just what we do.

He did seem like a nice guy.

by Anonymousreply 39June 19, 2016 7:06 PM

He was a talented kid. I'll always remember that episode of ER he was on when his parents died and he was crying for his mom. Made me tear up then.

by Anonymousreply 40June 19, 2016 7:08 PM

There's a "brick mailbox" next to the gate, and the driveway is on a steep incline. He probably pulled up to check the mail, left the car on neutral instead of parking it, the car rolled while he was at the mailbox, and gravity and time took care of the rest. Poor sweet guy.

Something similar happened to one of my aunts. She was unloading her vehicle, left the car on neutral (on a level road) with her young granddaughter in the vehicle, when suddenly the car started to move on its own. My aunt tried to jump in the vehicle--a Chevy Tahoe--but slipped. The vehicle rolled over both her legs. Luckily, she was wasn't killed nor did she lose her legs, but she suffered extensive nerve and leg damage, and her legs have never been the same.

by Anonymousreply 41June 19, 2016 7:08 PM

That ER episode was his first job.

by Anonymousreply 42June 19, 2016 7:09 PM

Can I have his things? But not his car...or mailbox.

by Anonymousreply 43June 19, 2016 7:10 PM

He was really good in that film Like Crazy (2011) with Felecity Jones and Jennifer Lawrence.

by Anonymousreply 44June 19, 2016 7:11 PM

Wow, I'm really sad to hear of death. It was only just last week that I saw him on Green Room" and just viewed the latest trailer for the new Star Trek film only yesterday. R38, yes, he was also on "Burying the Ex". RIP Anton.

by Anonymousreply 45June 19, 2016 7:12 PM

Celebs really are dropping like flies this year.

Especially the ones who you wouldn't expect.

Fuck.

by Anonymousreply 46June 19, 2016 7:13 PM

Wait...why would his car be in neutral? Isn't that only used when you have to push/haul it?

by Anonymousreply 47June 19, 2016 7:14 PM

.I am dumb, I guess ...

"Leaving it in neutral". .... Is that an accidental thing ? Why would someone do it ?

Sorry if I'm stupid ...I always put me car in park, so I don't get it

by Anonymousreply 48June 19, 2016 7:15 PM

Some people leave a car in neutral thinking it won't move. Obviously, that's a very flawed (and sometimes fatal) mistake.

He was a sweet guy, and a pro to work with.

by Anonymousreply 69June 19, 2016 7:51 PM

by Anonymousreply 70June 19, 2016 7:51 PM

Do Americans habitually apply the handbrake/footbrake when they stop a car or only when they park it and turn the engine off? I'm British, and even when I drove an automatic, I wouldn't get out of the car without the handbrake on.

by Anonymousreply 71June 19, 2016 7:51 PM

Shut the fuck up, already R68!!!!

People make mistakes. Not everybody is PERFECT like you are. That's why it's called a goddamned ACCIDENT!

by Anonymousreply 74June 19, 2016 7:53 PM

What was on his tricorder?

by Anonymousreply 75June 19, 2016 7:55 PM

R71, I'm American and I always apply the handbrake/E-brake when parking. I have friends in flatter areas who never use it though. Their car always slumps after they release the brake pedal. No issues, but it always feels weird.

by Anonymousreply 76June 19, 2016 7:55 PM

Do Americans put their cars in neutral when they park it?

by Anonymousreply 77June 19, 2016 7:56 PM

R69 did you work with him?

by Anonymousreply 78June 19, 2016 7:57 PM

R72, it's not a mistake he made if it's the norm to put a car in neutral.

by Anonymousreply 79June 19, 2016 7:59 PM

He was an only child; I can't imagine his parents' grief.

by Anonymousreply 80June 19, 2016 7:59 PM

Never heard of him.

by Anonymousreply 81June 19, 2016 8:00 PM

The architect of the place is at fault here also. He just had to have a brick mailbox. If there wasn't a brick mailbox, he would still be alive.

by Anonymousreply 82June 19, 2016 8:00 PM

I wonder how fast the car came at him/how long it took him to die. Yikes

by Anonymousreply 83June 19, 2016 8:00 PM

R76 I'm sorry but to me that just seems like classic American laziness/stupidity.

by Anonymousreply 84June 19, 2016 8:01 PM

Putting the car in neutral, but also making sure the hand brake is on, saves you from turning off the ignition. But you have to do it on level ground, and the brake has to be fully engaged. And still, it's risky.

by Anonymousreply 85June 19, 2016 8:02 PM

R83, seriously. They found him last night only after being missing for a while. I hope he didn't suffer too much 😢

by Anonymousreply 86June 19, 2016 8:03 PM

If it's a manual transmission, the only way to keep the car running if you're stopped and not pressing the clutch is to put it in neutral. He probably did that to jump out to either check mail or mess with the gate.

by Anonymousreply 87June 19, 2016 8:06 PM

R87 But then you put the handbrake/footbrake/parking brake on unless you want to risk the car rolling away if it's not on totally level ground.

by Anonymousreply 88June 19, 2016 8:09 PM

shit he was fit :(

by Anonymousreply 89June 19, 2016 8:12 PM

To honor him I am going on GRINDR and finding an ethnic Russian dude and then ploughing his ass until I get some crop.

by Anonymousreply 90June 19, 2016 8:13 PM

R84, how nice for you to be omniscient and infallible.

by Anonymousreply 91June 19, 2016 8:14 PM

Just sad over this, it seems so needless and happened to someone who was quite talented and seemingly well loved too. 2016 has to be the shittiest year ever.

by Anonymousreply 92June 19, 2016 8:16 PM

What time did this happen? Some say this morning and some say last night. He was meeting up with friends for a rehearsal.

by Anonymousreply 93June 19, 2016 8:17 PM

Sad. It's hard for me imagine parking up hill with a wall behind me. Maybe it was a fluke and he jumped out of the car without thinking.

by Anonymousreply 94June 19, 2016 8:19 PM

What a terrible way to go. It must have been a car with a manual transmission. Nobody who drives an automatic puts it in neutral when they get out.

by Anonymousreply 95June 19, 2016 8:20 PM

Was Baby Jane Hudson spotted near the crime scene?

by Anonymousreply 96June 19, 2016 8:20 PM

Live your life and don't hold back. This young death of a young, talented, successful man is just one more reminder that there's no official age at which to die. Somewhere out there is a backwards rolling car with your name on it, and I'm not being cheeky. It could find you tomorrow or in 40 years. Don't assume 40 years.

by Anonymousreply 97June 19, 2016 8:21 PM

[quote]Why would they write a death when Checkov was an old man in the final movies. They will simply recast the role.

The original films aren't part of the new rebooted JJ Abrams continuity, R28., so they could write an offscreen death for Chekov if they wanted. It'll be hard either way for that cast, who reportedly enjoyed working together every few years...

by Anonymousreply 98June 19, 2016 8:22 PM

[quote] what time did this happen?

He was found at 1am . His friends stopped by to check on him because he didn't show up for the rehearsal.

by Anonymousreply 99June 19, 2016 8:24 PM

Just think, if he had just rented a different place, this wouldn't have happened. Maybe it was just by chance he saw this place and decided to rent it. If only he hadn't seen this house and decided to rent a different house with a different setup.

by Anonymousreply 100June 19, 2016 8:25 PM

by Anonymousreply 103June 19, 2016 8:26 PM

They could also promote him to the command of a destroyer or other light vessel. He'd be pretty easily written out.

My guess is they'll recast the role though. Chekhov is a popular second tier character.

by Anonymousreply 108June 19, 2016 8:29 PM

Shia LaBeouf should be dead instead.

by Anonymousreply 109June 19, 2016 8:32 PM

He was losing his hair.

by Anonymousreply 110June 19, 2016 8:33 PM

Ugh, I just don't know how angry and bitter you have to be to wish someone else dead because someone you like died. All those "it should have been so and so instead" or "I'll trade so and so for so and so" make me ill.

by Anonymousreply 111June 19, 2016 8:34 PM

You should always use the parking/emergency brake, no exceptions. The parking pawl in an automatic transmission may not hold the car if it's under sufficient duress. That includes the car being struck by another vehicle when parked.

Ford had a big problem with their column-shift C6 automatic years ago-wear in the linkage could reach a point where just the weight of the gear selector was enough to nudge the car into gear. ALL gears in an automatic are 'neutral' when the engine isn't running. There's no fluid pressure in the tranny (oops!) to engage the internals. There's a video I can no longer find that showed a Ford sedan doing backwards doughnuts after it dropped into reverse while the engine was running.

Pity about this fellow, the car must have knocked him down and pinned his chest or neck. He probably couldn't make a sound in that state. Horrible.

by Anonymousreply 112June 19, 2016 8:38 PM

[quote] What a terrible way to go. It must have been a car with a manual transmission. Nobody who drives an automatic puts it in neutral when they get out.

A manual transmission car would not stay in a position when in neutral without the handbrake on.

by Anonymousreply 113June 19, 2016 8:39 PM

P.S.

If it was a manual transmission car, it's possible he didn't pull the handbrake all the way, and the brake slipped out of its position.

by Anonymousreply 114June 19, 2016 8:40 PM

R112, and that's why it rolled on him.

by Anonymousreply 115June 19, 2016 8:42 PM

[quote]that seems awfully late for a rehearsal. What were they rehearsing? For a show, a movie?

I assume the rehearsals was late afternoon or early evening (5 or 7). It went on for a few hours and when they realized he wasn't answering calls, responding to texts, they decided to see what was up.

by Anonymousreply 116June 19, 2016 8:43 PM

R122, what an awful thought. I was thinking that it hit his abdomen "crushing him". But yeah, it was probably head/upper body trauma that did it.

by Anonymousreply 117June 19, 2016 8:45 PM

Grief is a bitter pill, R111. The snide comments immediately attributing the accident to stupidity or laziness are even farther beyond the pale. Any number of factors could have created the situation, and we've all done things in haste or otherwise that left unfortunate consequences. Anyone who's familiar with this kid's work knows what a creative genius and brilliant spirit he was. Fuck off with the insults added to injury.

by Anonymousreply 134June 19, 2016 9:13 PM

Chilling. This is not really a freak accident. It happens frequently. People changing tires, trying to push a car out of a ditch or absent-mindedly neglecting to put a car in park.

by Anonymousreply 144June 19, 2016 9:52 PM

Yeah, freak accident is the wrong term. He didn't put the car in park and it was at the top of a hill. That's human error. Explainable.

by Anonymousreply 145June 19, 2016 9:56 PM

A theory online is that the gate malfunctioned and wasn't opening so Anton got out of his car to open it and failed to see the car was coming down the steep driveway. It's likely he was crushed and killed instantly.

by Anonymousreply 146June 19, 2016 10:04 PM

Does all of your whining about how the accident happened bring him back to life? No.

by Anonymousreply 147June 19, 2016 10:05 PM

He was on the wrong side of 20.

by Anonymousreply 148June 19, 2016 10:08 PM

The gate is dented in from the street-side, r146, so it may have been that the gate wouldn't close and the SUV rolled backwards into him.

by Anonymousreply 149June 19, 2016 10:15 PM

Assuming it happened when he was leaving for the rehearsal, that is.

by Anonymousreply 150June 19, 2016 10:16 PM

by Anonymousreply 151June 19, 2016 10:20 PM

by Anonymousreply 179June 19, 2016 11:56 PM

Oh god, I never cry when celebrities die, but I teared up when I heard about Anton's death. Maybe the fact that this was an awful accident plus the fact that he was young and had so much potential and now will never get his shot.

He's been on so many tv shows that his face was always familiar. In movies I've only seen The Beaver and Terminator Salvation but he was a stand out in both of those.

by Anonymousreply 180June 19, 2016 11:58 PM

Given that the driveway doesnt look that steep, I wonder if he had had a smaller car instead of a big stupid SUV, he could have pushed it back or resisted it long enough to get out from it.

by Anonymousreply 181June 20, 2016 12:00 AM

R175, the way that statement read to me, Jodie was making it sound like she wasn't just talking about her own experience with him, but was talking more generally to include people who worked with him. He was everyone's little brother, in her view.

Rumor going around is that Star Trek Beyond is going to be pushed back to November. The cast of Beyond were to start press for the movie in the next week or two but doubtful any of them are up for it.

by Anonymousreply 186June 20, 2016 12:05 AM

"Little brother" seems to be the most common phrase; the official statement from Paramount/Star Trek refers to him as such:

Anton was our little brother. But only by years; he was as wise and clever and intellectually curious as anyone we ever knew. His laugh was preposterous – you couldn’t hear it and not laugh yourself. He was funny, edgy, wild and talented beyond measure. His focus and dedication was admirable, as was his love of family, friends, literature and music.

We loved Anton, at work or at play. We are all shocked and numb and devastated by the world’s loss of an extraordinary young man.

To his family, we send you our love during this impossible time.

We will miss Anton forever.

That's a nice statement r187.

I remember watching some behind the scenes stuff after the first Star Trek in 2009 and Karl Urban was talking about how Anton was such a little chess prodigy. Then it showed him in a game with Bruce Greenwood (Capt. pike), and Bruce was deep in concentration and Anton was just looking around paying attention to everyone around him and quickly making moves while it took Bruce a while to make his.

Then the interviewer asked Bruce about his games with Anton and who won, and Bruce got all serious and said 'Next question'. It was funny, no one could beat Anton in chess and it pissed Greenwood off.

ANTON-- “I’m so paranoid,” he says. “I don’t trust people—partly because of my beliefs about this culture that everyone wants to be objectified and in some way consumed by someone else. It just freaks me out.”

and this:

“I mean, you see all those young, pretty girls,” he says. “At least one of them has some crazy, deep-dark weird shit that’s being contained by this capitalist façade. If you just crack through it, it becomes a sea of complete and utter darkness and just chaos. Which is what we are as people, I think.”

by Anonymousreply 223June 20, 2016 1:32 AM

R201 Rouge One is supposed to come out Mid-December, although it's so plagued by production problems it might not make it's release date. If Beyond comes out mid-November it'll be fine.

I don't see why they should delay the release. Star Trek has a built in audience so really it will probably do well with next to no publicity by the cast.

Anton Yelchin Death: Jeep Grand Cherokees Were Recalled for Rollaway Risk

Fiat Chrysler earlier this year recalled certain Jeep Grand Cherokees for their “rollaway” risk after drivers were injured when they mistakenly thought they had shifted their car to park.

Star Trek star Anton Yelchin was killed at his San Fernando Valley home on Saturday night when his own car pinned him to his mailbox at the bottom of a steep driveway. Yelchin was alone and, according to TMZ, the car was a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Friends found Yelchin when they went to his house after he failed to turn up to rehearsal.

The voluntary recall, in April 2016, impacted 2014 to 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokees that were manufactured between July 16, 2012, and December 22, 2015, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

It’s unclear which model was involved in Yelchin’s accident, as well as what exactly led up to the 27-year-old’s death. The LAPD did not respond to requests for comment.

According to a summary of the NHTSA report on the “defect” (PDF):

The affected vehicles, equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission and a monostable gear selector, may not adequately warn the driver when driver’s door is opened and the vehicle is not in PARK, allowing them to exit the vehicle while the vehicle is still in gear....

Drivers thinking that their vehicle’s transmission is in the PARK position may be struck by the vehicle and injured if they attempt to get out of the vehicle while the engine is running and the parking brake is not engaged.

By April 12, 2016, Fiat Crysler had identified 212 crashes, 308 claims of property damage, and 41 injuries related to the issue, according to a submission [PDF] to the NHTSA.

Update: 10:00pm: According to Fiat Crysler Automotive, the issue stems to from the design of the electronic shifter. When the driver shifts the vehicle into park, the only indication to the driver is a light on the console: “unless due care is taken, drivers may draw erroneous conclusions about the status of their vehicles.”

According to a representative from FCA, drivers of affected vehicles were notified and issued directions to properly operate the shifter. The company could not speak about this specific accident, nor whether Yelchin’s vehicle was one of the ones affected by the recall.

[quote] I've never used the parking brake, but it really seems like a good idea. I have a 2012 Jeep Wrangler

You really can't 100% trust any transmission to stay in park on a steep incline. There's much strain on the little pin which immobilizes the tranny unless the parking brake is also on. Could the pin break? Yup.

I've had many situations where I had to lock and unlock gates on Forest Service roads on steep inclines. I actually carried sandbags to chock the wheels because of the iffy parking brake on my old Chevy truck. I always felt a rollaway could happen easily under those circumstances...and this is an 8000 lb. truck...big ouch.

by Anonymousreply 246June 20, 2016 3:56 AM

As soon as I heard he had a Grand Cherokee, R227, I immediately thought about the FCA recall on the electronic shifter. My partner has a 2015 Grand Cherokee, and the electronic shifter, while not difficult to use, can easily be left in neutral if you aren't paying attention or are in a hurry. If you tug on it once, it goes into neutral, and then you tug again to go into drive. You have to push up a couple times to get into park; if you push up once, it only goes into neutral. I wouldn't say it's a stupid set up, but it takes a bit of getting used to. If the shifter is implicated in his death, it won't be good for FCA, even though they've taken steps to mitigate existing problems. The new rotary shifter is much better.

by Anonymousreply 247June 20, 2016 4:07 AM

Those moments always stick with me and I think what might have happened if, by chance, the mistake had not passed uneventfully. I hope he didn't suffer from this and I hope he had no awareness of his mistake.

by Anonymousreply 257June 20, 2016 5:25 AM

I always cringe when celebs die because suddenly everyone was a fan and they loved the celeb and yada yada yada, it's always the same bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 258June 20, 2016 5:26 AM

He suffocated? How would that happen? I believe an autopsy well tell what happened. How fast at what sharp of an angle does a 5,000lb box need to be to at to kill a twink?

by Anonymousreply 259June 20, 2016 5:28 AM

Doesn't seem like it could have killed him instantly. Wonder how long he was there.

by Anonymousreply 260June 20, 2016 5:30 AM

Yes, R257. I have those same thoughts on occasion. This could have been a perfectly uneventful day for him, but because of some crazy misfortune it ended up a tragic one.

by Anonymousreply 261June 20, 2016 5:30 AM

Did they find him dead or was he injured and taken to the hospital where he later died?

by Anonymousreply 262June 20, 2016 6:34 AM

He was found dead.

by Anonymousreply 263June 20, 2016 10:07 AM

R259 If a huge weight is pressing against your ribcage, you're not going to be able to breathe, are you?

by Anonymousreply 264June 20, 2016 10:33 AM

Did he play any gay roles?

by Anonymousreply 265June 20, 2016 10:49 AM

Zoe Saldana posted on twitter this morning: Devastated by our friend's loss. We are mourning his passing and celebrating the beautiful spirit that he was. #RIPAnton

Chris Pine hasn't stated anything but he doesn't do social media. I'm sure we'll hear from him in time.

As for the rumors about Beyond being pushed back, I don't think it'll happen. Paramount has already sunk a lot of money in the marketing campaign. What might happen is less press appearances by the cast and a lower key premiere.

by Anonymousreply 266June 20, 2016 12:43 PM

Still no comment from Chris Pine. Is he on a pre-press tour bender?

by Anonymousreply 267June 20, 2016 12:55 PM

It just seems odd to me that the jeep would have been at such an angle that their was no wiggle room.

by Anonymousreply 268June 20, 2016 12:55 PM

It should have been Shia instead.

by Anonymousreply 269June 20, 2016 12:57 PM

R267 Maybe he's in rehab? And that's not meant as a joke, no secret Mr. Pine is found of the bottle.

by Anonymousreply 270June 20, 2016 1:01 PM

[quote]What? He was another bareback cum dump for Quinto? Gross.

Hopefully, there's a steep hill, brick mailbox and a large car in neutral in your future.

by Anonymousreply 271June 20, 2016 1:26 PM

😭😭😭

by Anonymousreply 272June 20, 2016 2:04 PM

r270 I wasn't joking either. Pine's fondness for the bottle is no secret in certain circles. How the hell does he stay so thin with all that booze?

by Anonymousreply 273June 20, 2016 2:07 PM

If it was me, it would not have gone done like that . I would have pushed that car away from me and said, "Ok, don't worry. We're going to safely drive to a mechanic."

by Anonymousreply 274June 20, 2016 2:15 PM

R273 He may stay thin but Pine does have the characteristic facial bloating that a lot of drinkers have, and he's noticeably aged over the last couple of years. I bet having to remain closeted while one of your close friends/fuck buddies is out and it hasn't affected his career is a major contributing factor.

by Anonymousreply 275June 20, 2016 2:22 PM

That's not the "REAL" Star Trek. He's just another junkie who was in a car crash.

by Anonymousreply 276June 20, 2016 2:54 PM

How fast could the jeep have been rolling for god's sake?! Certainly not 60 mph. Maybe it's just me, but if I saw a car slowly coming at me perhaps I would have gotten out of the way? That's what makes me think there must have been some kind of "impairment" at play. Still sad of course, but avoidable.

by Anonymousreply 277June 20, 2016 2:55 PM

Mostly likely, he was turned away from the car, so he didn't see it coming. Judging from the bent metal bars of the fence, the vehicle exerted a huge amount of force, causing extensive internal damage. His must've been a slow, painful death.

by Anonymousreply 278June 20, 2016 2:59 PM

R278 my guess is if he didn't die right away he would likely have been unconscious the whole time.

by Anonymousreply 279June 20, 2016 3:00 PM

Death by crushing was a favorite way to do away with "criminals":

[quote]"Pressing to death" might take several days, and not necessarily with a continued increase in the load. The most famous case in the United Kingdom was that of Roman Catholic martyr St Margaret Clitherow, who (in order to avoid a trial in which her own children would be obliged to give evidence) was pressed to death on March 25, 1586, after refusing to plead to the charge of having harboured Catholic (then outlawed) priests in her house. She died within fifteen minutes under a weight of at least 700 pounds (320 kg). Several hardened criminals, including William Spigott (1721) and Edward Burnworth, lasted a half hour under 400 pounds (180 kg) before pleading to the indictment. Others, such as Major Strangways (1658) and John Weekes (1731), refused to plead, even under 400 pounds (180 kg), and were killed when bystanders, out of mercy, sat on them. In medieval Europe, the slow crushing of body parts in screw-operated "bone vises" of iron was a common method of torture, and a tremendous variety of cruel instruments were used to savagely crush the head, the knee, the hand, and, most commonly, either the thumb or the naked foot. Such instruments were finely threaded and variously provided with spiked inner surfaces or heated red-hot before their application to the limb to be tortured.

by Anonymousreply 280June 20, 2016 3:11 PM

I'm really old school and anytime before I leave a car, I use the hand brake. I have a friend who never uses her hand brake and though I realize the odds of anything happening are slim--this incident illustrates the potential danger. When I lived in LA, my duplex was a stupendously steep hill. So I became very adept at hill parallel parking. When I visit LA now and have to parallel park, it's embarrassing, I'm so out of practice as I haven't owned a car in over 12 years. I guess living on a such a steep really reinforced my usage of hand brakes. I'm showing my age as I also always note if car wheels aren't turned correctly when parked up or down a slope. Aren't kids learning this stuff nowadays?

by Anonymousreply 281June 20, 2016 3:11 PM

From what TMZ is reporting - his driveways was very steep. For some reason (malfunctioning gate?) he left the car which was in neutral, or somehow switched to neutral, and it it began to roll down the driveway and picked up speed as it come rolling down the driveways and slammed into the cement and iron fence. He might not have heard the car coming if he had headphones for example. Given the damage on the fence, it's likely he was slammed into the cement and would have died quickly.

by Anonymousreply 282June 20, 2016 3:32 PM

Chris Pine's latest comments about the new Star Trek movie really put stock in the rumors that he's an alcoholic. He basically called the new movie a piece of shit (in a roundabout way) a few days ago, and the Internet fans are tearing him apart. Sounds like a drunk running his mouth off.

by Anonymousreply 283June 20, 2016 3:39 PM

I agree with the other posters, that Anton had his back turned toward the car, and didn't hear the car coming. I'm only hoping that Anton didn't suffer. ☹️

I thought Anton Yelchin's final great performance was in "Like Crazy". I also recommend, "Odd Thomas" that's currently playing in Netflix.

by Anonymousreply 284June 20, 2016 3:43 PM

R275 I've wondered if Chris Pine had a drinking problem every since he was charged with a DUI in New Zealand a few years back. Since then his face is always puffy and haggard looking, and sometimes he's got the red face/glossy eye look going. I've also heard the rumors of Chris at least swinging both ways and I'm assuming you're referring to Quinto in your post.

R283 I think fans are misreading Pine's comments though. He wasn't questioning their intelligence or trashing the movie, he was criticizing the industry where executives feel that movies heavy on explosions and action are the only way to make money.

I, too, live in an area that is flat as a pancake. The only time I used the handbrake was once when my dr moved to a new location and the parking lot was built on a hill. Since then I haven't used it, but now the icon telling me my brake lights aren't working flashes all the time. My brake lights are working fine. Fucking hand brake started that shit.

Now when I go to the dr I park next door, on level ground.

by Anonymousreply 290June 20, 2016 4:12 PM

R196 Lovely story, thank you. Anton was extraordinary in every role, I happily watched anything he appeared in.

by Anonymousreply 291June 20, 2016 4:12 PM

I just hot back from FL where I was given a shitty Chevy Trax rental car. What a piece of shit. My sister and I both drove it and we have 30 years of driving experience. We both had trouble with the shifter. There was some M designation.. Both of us accidentally had the car in either neutral or M when we thought we'd put the car in drive. One time I thought I'd put the car in park and it was in neutral.

Piece of shit American carmakers cheap out on important car parts, figuring the odd freak accident won't cost them more than they saved by not spending an extra $10 on a few million cars.

by Anonymousreply 292June 20, 2016 4:16 PM

What are you all talking about, I think Chris looks great these days

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 293June 20, 2016 4:54 PM

It's beyond offensive that almost every actor in Hollywood is tweeting their paralyzingly grief over someone most of them never even met. It's obscene. I had minimal contact with the guy and thought he was sweet, but would never dream of claiming intimate knowledge of him or his personality in online posts for the sake of publicity.

by Anonymousreply 294June 20, 2016 5:02 PM

R294 I don't think it's offensive it's just the nature of the world we live in these days. Social media everyone has to put in their two cents about everything.

R293 Jesus, it looks like Chris downed a few bottles before this picture.

by Anonymousreply 295June 20, 2016 5:05 PM

Even worse, R294, are the shreeeekers on DL who insist upon it.

It *is* an Indy 500 event, R295. He should be wearing a suit?

by Anonymousreply 296June 20, 2016 5:06 PM

[quote]almost every actor in Hollywood is tweeting their paralyzingly grief

I don't give a shit.

by Anonymousreply 297June 20, 2016 5:15 PM

R296 it's not what's he wearing, it's more of the drunk out of it look on his face....doesn't seem to help those drinking problem rumors.

by Anonymousreply 298June 20, 2016 5:16 PM

R298 He looks hot. And it's a party, so yes, he may be drinking.

Do you have any idea how prissy you sound?

by Anonymousreply 299June 20, 2016 5:25 PM

R299 chill out, Chris!! R298 was just continuing the conversations that 273 & 275 started. There are some rumors that Chris has a drinking problem. He was charged with DUI a couple years ago.

by Anonymousreply 300June 20, 2016 5:30 PM

[quote]He basically called the new movie a piece of shit (in a roundabout way) a few days ago, and the Internet fans are tearing him apart

"Internet fans" are a bunch of idiots that will overreact to anything and completely miss the point. That is not some valid metric. If anyone saw the preview for the latest Star Trek they brought in the director of Fast and Furious and transformed it into a generic action movie. It is quite sad.

by Anonymousreply 301June 20, 2016 5:34 PM

When you're shilling a movie, basically calling it a piece of shit is going to piss off a lot of people. The studio is NOT happy with Chrissy at all, rumor has it.

R302 I read the interview and at no point does he imply the movie is shit. He is talking about the fact now a days studios wants high action less story because those seem to make money. I don't think he was implying the movie was shit.

by Anonymousreply 307June 20, 2016 5:56 PM

If it's "high action, less story," R307, "shit" is the proper appellation.

by Anonymousreply 308June 20, 2016 5:57 PM

r307 Pine was totally calling it a brain-dead action movie for mass-market morons. You have to read between the lines.

by Anonymousreply 309June 20, 2016 5:59 PM

R309 Or maybe he was just drunk and didn't know what he was saying.

by Anonymousreply 310June 20, 2016 6:01 PM

[quote] Or maybe he was just drunk and didn't know what he was saying.

Or maybe he knows EXACTLY what he was saying, because I agree with him.

Hollywood is a fucking sell-out.

They don't care about integrity anymore. All they care about is money. He's 100% correct.

by Anonymousreply 311June 20, 2016 6:07 PM

Speaking of Chris Pine, why don't we ever see him and Quinto hanging out anymore. Remember after the first movie really up until the second one we used to see them out and about together regularly in LA and NYC. Did they have a falling out?

by Anonymousreply 312June 20, 2016 6:09 PM

Zachary Quinto seems to be the type who would get on a person's nerves after a while.

by Anonymousreply 313June 20, 2016 6:12 PM

That was before Quinto came out. They don't talk anymore.

by Anonymousreply 314June 20, 2016 6:13 PM

Tabloids were all over the Pine-Quinto "friendship," and trying to make them into a couple, especially after Quinto came out.

Looks like the heat became too much for Pine, and he backed off.

That's pretty fucking sad.

by Anonymousreply 315June 20, 2016 6:18 PM

R314 they continued to hang out after Zach came out. They seemed to stop after the press for Into Darkness was over. I vividly remember the Into Darkness press tour because there were those now infamous gif of Pine looking at Quinto like a fat man at an all you can eat donut buffet.

by Anonymousreply 316June 20, 2016 6:34 PM

Classic Star Trek has always mainly been a big gay love story between Kirk and Spock. But I guess Paramount has not realized that yet if they keep Pine from coming out...

by Anonymousreply 317June 20, 2016 6:37 PM

We had a poster on another thread who went to UC Berkeley with Pine and confirmed that he had sex w/ guys and was versatile. Big dick, too.

by Anonymousreply 318June 20, 2016 6:38 PM

Wasn't there a blind item about that seemed to be about Pine/Quinto screwing around during the Into Darkness tour which is why they're not as close now.

by Anonymousreply 319June 20, 2016 6:46 PM

Once I forgot to set the brake on a manual transmission Ford Explorer and it rolled backwards out of my driveway (with about a 25 degree angle) across the street, smacking into a Honda Accord's rear end. It took 20 seconds, and the Accord was accordioned into oblivion.

by Anonymousreply 320June 20, 2016 6:47 PM

by Anonymousreply 346June 21, 2016 12:27 AM

Spare a thought or a prayer or good vibes for his parents.

Anyone who has to bury their twentysomething only child — beyond horrible.

But to give up your careers in the USSR and emigrate to the US for your child, and to have that child actually turn out to be specially talented and beat the odds to have a major Hollywood career (and be a nice guy in the process), only for this freak shit to happen ...

Tragedy is not a contest, and it doesn't make this loss any bigger than any other. But my God, I feel for those parents.

by Anonymousreply 347June 21, 2016 12:27 AM

Same here, r347. His parents left what was then the Soviet Union so their son could have a better life, and he was their only child. The sun rose and set on him, and they loved him deeply. And then he died so young in such a weird accident. I feel terrible for them, this is beyond awful.

by Anonymousreply 348June 21, 2016 12:30 AM

It's his realtor's fault. He wanted another house but the realtor convinced him that steep inclines and exposed brick mailboxes had better resale value.

by Anonymousreply 349June 21, 2016 12:32 AM

I would not want to be one of his friends who found him like that. His back being turned probably means he was facing the direction of the road when they found him. I wouldn't want to see a mushed body facing me.

by Anonymousreply 350June 21, 2016 12:38 AM

Yeah, I really hope those coroner's photos don't surface.

by Anonymousreply 352June 21, 2016 12:41 AM

Don't know how that post ended up here. I was reading the thread about the Senate not passing gun control.

by Anonymousreply 353June 21, 2016 12:43 AM

r352 That's actually been an ongoing concern since Amadou Diallo (sp?). The quality of policing in general is causing a lot of incidents to occur or escalate. Many old school LEOs think it's behind most of the prominent minority shootings.

by Anonymousreply 354June 21, 2016 12:44 AM

Did none of his neighbors hear the crash or see him pinned against the gate?

Surely, the noise of the car smashing into the gate would have been loud enough for someone to hear.

by Anonymousreply 355June 21, 2016 12:46 AM

A big audible crash would have broke through the gate. This crash was enough to trash him and a couple of the bars, so it wasn't a noise people would pay attention too.

Also, the houses could be widely separated and foliage would damp the sound.

I would have hated to walk up to that gate to find a friend crushed and facing out.

by Anonymousreply 356June 21, 2016 12:50 AM

Just went through it with a runover beloved cat, bulged eyes and all, and that was hard enough. Feel bad for Anton and for his friends who had to find him that way. An image they won't be able to forget, no doubt (though maybe it was dark, at least).

by Anonymousreply 357June 21, 2016 12:54 AM

[quote]bulged eyes and all

This is exactly what I pictured when I first read the details of the accident. Although since he was LEAVING his home, his back was toward the street, so his face was most likely pushed into..and through..the bars. Yikes.

by Anonymousreply 370June 21, 2016 2:56 AM

I'm confused by the gate set up. If he got out of his car to fix the gate, why would he stop the car more than a few feet away from the gate to do so? The immediate vicinity on either side of the gate is relatively flat so there'd be no danger of roll aways.

by Anonymousreply 371June 21, 2016 3:07 AM

R337 If you look at the Grand Cherokee in profile, the taillights stick out a bit towards the back. So the bumpers can can pin your legs against something and the taillights can asphyxiate you, especially if you are not very tall like Anton was. What a death machine. If Anton had bought a sedan, he would still be alive I think.

by Anonymousreply 372June 21, 2016 10:07 AM

R372 Yes genius if he had not been run over and killed by his car he would have still been alive.

by Anonymousreply 373June 21, 2016 10:22 AM

R373 He was not run over but pressed against the fence and suffocated, idiot.

by Anonymousreply 374June 21, 2016 10:24 AM

Paget Brewster played his mom on Huff and was in a Criminal Minds episode with him her first season (which will air on ION in an hour). She posted condolences to his parents on her Twitter ... nothing over the top and completely heartfelt. Always liked her. [quote]Anton Yelchin Probably Didn’t Suffer Long Before Death, Coroner Says

Anton Yelchin, the “Star Trek” actor who was killed in a freak accident at age 27 on Sunday, likely didn’t suffer long before he died, a representative for the Los Angeles County coroner’s office told TheWrap on Tuesday.

“Due to his injuries he most likely died within a minute or so,” the representative said.

PEOPLE:

[quote]Anton Yelchin's Cause of Death Officially Ruled Accidental: 'Blunt Traumatic Asphyxia,' Coroner Says

Anton Yelchin's death has officially been ruled an accident.

The Star Trek actor died of accidental "blunt traumatic asphyxia," Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter of the Los Angeles County coroner's office confirms to PEOPLE.

Yelchin's body was found Sunday pinned between his car and the gate of his home in Studio City, California, after the 27-year-old's vehicle rolled backward down the steep driveway, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson tells PEOPLE.

The spokesperson says the car was a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee – the same model that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles recalled in April after the vehicle was investigated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for its gearshift design.

"We are looking into that," the LAPD spokesperson says. "The investigation is still ongoing and the traffic detectives will look at all of those factors as they would in any traffic collision investigation. So, at this time we're not sure what caused it, but that's something investigators are looking at."

The 2014 and 2015 models of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, manufactured between July 16, 2012 and Dec. 22, 2015, were recalled by the company after the NHTSA issued a report stating that the vehicles' gearshift design made it difficult to tell what gear the vehicle is in.

The police investigation into the circumstances of Yelchin's death is ongoing, and toxicology tests are expected to be available in 6-8 weeks.

[quote]Anton Yelchin's Final Days: Actor Was 'Brilliant and Excited About Making Art,' Photographer Says

Just three days before his tragic death, Anton Yelchin enjoyed a five-hour dinner at L.A.'s Chateau Marmont with good friend Marilyn Manson and photographer Tyler Shields.

"He was so elated and excited about different things," Shields tells PEOPLE. "He was very passionate about a movie he wanted to direct. It is sad to me that he never got to make it."

Manson suggested all three get together for dinner after the singer learned Yelchin had a love of photography. The three men spent the evening discussing photography, film and art.

Yelchin's body was found Sunday pinned between the car and the gate of his home in Studio City, California, after the 27-year-old's vehicle rolled backward down the steep driveway, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson tells PEOPLE.

"I think people only knew him for his acting, but there is a whole other side to him that was really fascinating," says Shields. "He did photography and was a passionate artist who was looking forward to this movie he wanted to direct."

And although the lively dinner would be the first and only time Shields got a chance to meet Yelchin, he says the evening left a lasting impression on him.

“He was brilliant and funny and excited about making art," says Shields. "And then he was gone the next day. It was just so sad.”

Anton Yelchin did not suffer much before his tragic death this past weekend ... this according to the death certificate obtained by TMZ.

The document restates Anton's death was caused by blunt traumatic asphyxia. It goes on to say his death was "rapid" after impact.

TMZ broke the story ... a source connected with the investigation told us the actor died within a minute of impact, when his jeep pinned his body against a security gate.

The death certificate also states there were no other significant conditions contributing to his death.

Sorry, not buying. Did they test his blood? Was he high or drunk? Was it captured on security camera? Only then will it make sense.

by Anonymousreply 440June 26, 2016 1:41 AM

R440 It wouldn't have needed to pick up any speed to press him against the gate and crush him. Nor would it make any noise as it rolled backwards. Duh!

by Anonymousreply 449June 26, 2016 9:06 PM

So, there's no way to resuscitate him? You'd think in this day and age, they would've been able to save his life, by whatever means possible. Not to mention that he was well-off and most likely could afford the best doctors and medical care.

by Anonymousreply 450June 26, 2016 9:12 PM

Maybe r450 if they got to him soon after the accident, but it is not clear how long he was hung up against the gate.

by Anonymousreply 451June 26, 2016 9:18 PM

So horrible if he was alive and conscious for even a full minute while pressed against the wall and trying to wiggle his way out from the car with no luck at all. And slowly figuring out this was the end. I don't wish this kind of death on anyone.

Again, glad he is getting an almost unusual display of respect from the world, at least. He seems truly beloved.

by Anonymousreply 452June 26, 2016 9:36 PM

I think the force of the car hitting him not only knocked the air out of him, but knocked him out as well.

by Anonymousreply 453June 26, 2016 9:48 PM

by Anonymousreply 454June 26, 2016 9:54 PM

L.A. isn't really known for the "neighborly" thing, alas (most never meet). But surely someone could've heard him yell -- if he was able to do so.

I just keep thinking that car couldn't have picked up much speed (that incline doesn't look like much) so seems like it was more being trapped than impact that did the deed. But I'm sure we'll never know exactly what happened. Poor kid.

by Anonymousreply 472June 26, 2016 11:05 PM

Those of you talking about speed of impact are confusing what would happen if a car hits you while you're crossing the street vs a several thousand pound weight crushing you against an immovable object. You can possibly survive a 20mph impact if you're on the street since most of the energy of the impact is converted to motion (you're thrown x number of feet away). A goodly amount of the impact may not be absorbed by your body, resulting in relatively minor injuries.

Contrast that with being crushed by a large weight. Even if it moves slowly, since your body can't be thrown (bounced) away, all of the energy from the impact is absorbed by your body. Even if it were only moving 1 mph, it would still exert all the energy needed to move a couple of tons of steel onto your body with nowhere for it to go but to crush you.

by Anonymousreply 473June 26, 2016 11:15 PM

True, R473.

That's a good explanation of the physics involved.

Muslims have the same rule about getting their dead in the ground before sundown, and when Benazir Bhutto was assassinated, they got around the rule by burying her at dusk, and then digging her up the next morning to do the autopsy.

He bought the house in 2012, and at least one of the real estate sites has the pictures of it when it was for sale - typical French country house look, and there's a photo of the gate and brick post from inside. It's weird.

Oh, and at least one neighbor is fairly close, but probably have heard anything (if they were even home)

In an investigation of death where there is any question of suspicious circumstances, the medical examiner can hold the body as long as needed. There is no requirement to follow the deceased religious practices. The case described by R495 would never happen in the US.

by Anonymousreply 499June 28, 2016 11:59 AM

R487 Of course it was preventable, he should have put the brake on. Just putting it in park isn't enough (if he even did that). I'm not sure the company is at fault here.

by Anonymousreply 504June 28, 2016 5:57 PM

R500, yes, the discovery hasn't been conducted yet to unearth all of the facts should this become a point of litigation. One fact, however is indisputable: you are a smug, condescending, insufferable asswipe.

by Anonymousreply 505June 29, 2016 1:14 AM

His house is very small (for LA) and cute.

by Anonymousreply 506June 29, 2016 2:05 AM

He wasn't an A-lister, so I suppose it makes sense that his house was modest-sized.

by Anonymousreply 507June 29, 2016 2:22 AM

People who make products that require complex instructions should not hold too fast to that given that ordinary care would cause a company to make vehicles that don't roll forward when unattended by a driver.

by Anonymousreply 508June 29, 2016 2:46 AM

It's seems that every actor who worked with Anton, enjoyed working with him. And, he was very cute.

by Anonymousreply 509June 29, 2016 3:35 PM

What is R508 trying to say?

by Anonymousreply 510June 29, 2016 3:37 PM

We'll have more to discuss in a few weeks when the toxicology results are released.

by Anonymousreply 511June 29, 2016 8:44 PM

Well, why didn't you just say that?

by Anonymousreply 512June 29, 2016 8:48 PM

I don't think r511 is r508. I still can't make heads or tails of what r508 is trying to say.

by Anonymousreply 513June 29, 2016 8:52 PM

Thank you, R513. There's been such an uptick in subliteracy around DL lately, we may never know.

Correct.

I am not R508.

Very sad...

by Anonymousreply 520June 30, 2016 12:28 AM

It's really not sad that the movie PR things are being cancelled. It would be in very poor taste to do that so soon after your co-star died so tragically.

by Anonymousreply 521June 30, 2016 12:48 AM

ET reports that his funeral was held on Friday:

[quote]Anton Yelchin Remembered at Private Funeral Service

A private funeral was held for Anton Yelchin on Friday, ET can confirm.

Friends and family said goodbye to the 27-year-old actor, while one of Yelchin's best friends gave the eulogy.

The service took place five days after Yelchin's tragic death -- the actor was struck by his car and pinned to a security fence in the driveway of his Los Angeles home last Sunday. A coroner confirmed the cause of death to be traumatic asphyxia, a condition arising from intense compression on the chest.

I'd be very surprised if the film doesn't come out as planned.

by Anonymousreply 528July 1, 2016 7:35 AM

The film comes out on July 22, so they will have to make a decision soon.

by Anonymousreply 529July 1, 2016 7:48 AM

Wouldn't more people be likely to see it now?

by Anonymousreply 530July 1, 2016 9:20 AM

The studio just dropped a new trailer a couple of days ago, one that featured a close look at every character except Anton's Chekov, so I doubt they will delay the release.

Did the car lurch forward or backward and smash him against the gate?

Sad. I always liked him as a child actor.

It's too late to delay the movie now. They will just do less press if the stars are not up to it, and hope for the best out of a bad situation.

by Anonymousreply 540July 5, 2016 8:36 AM

Like they'd really delay that big film for anyone's death... Silly thought.

[quote]The studio just dropped a new trailer a couple of days ago, one that featured a close look at every character except Anton's Chekov

They're going to edit him out of the film before releasing, according to Twitter. No one wants to be reminded of this sad death that takes people out of the moment during a big summer fun popcorn movie.

by Anonymousreply 543July 5, 2016 11:07 AM

Chekhov won't be edited out of the film, either, there are some dumb basic bitches posting in here. It's a small supporting role. It's not like Brad Pitt died.

by Anonymousreply 544July 5, 2016 11:12 AM

Because it's a small supporting role, it could be edited out.

by Anonymousreply 545July 5, 2016 11:15 AM

They won't edit him out. In fact, they'll dedicate the film to him.

by Anonymousreply 546July 5, 2016 11:26 AM

They won't edit him out because Chekov is part of the main crew and it would be jarring and unprofessional to do so. Actors appear posthumously all the time. People die it's not going to take down this huge movie especially since his part is small.

by Anonymousreply 547July 5, 2016 11:32 AM

That's going to be so sad seeing 'In Loving Memory: Anton Yelchin' at the end of the film. Especially if they have a picture.

I rarely see movies in the theatre, but Star Treks are ones I make exceptions for. He was a good Chekhov and they absolutely wouldn't do him the disservice of editing him out of the film. Maybe he'll be on less promotional material, but he wasn't on that much to begin with. They wouldn't want people stealing posters of him or anything.

by Anonymousreply 548July 5, 2016 11:34 AM

It would be disrespectful and all kinds of stupid to edit him out. Let him have his last film, sad enough he can't have the next 50. It will be "in loving memory" as everyone said.

I must say Chekov was my favorite part of the first film. I thought super baby faced Chekov with an extra strong accent was the funniest thing. Hated the second though, so I'll probably pass on the third.

by Anonymousreply 549July 5, 2016 12:13 PM

Dedicate the film to him with a picture? Have you EVER seen that? Are you a 12 year old girl?

by Anonymousreply 550July 5, 2016 12:20 PM

[quote]They won't edit him out because Chekov is part of the main crew and it would be jarring and unprofessional to do so.

It would definitely be insulting to edit him out and it would provoke a backlash from Trek fans.

[quote]Cast of Star Trek Beyond Gathers for 'Bittersweet' Australia Premiere After Death of Costar Anton Yelchin

07/07/2016

Star Trek Beyond's cast came together for the film's Australia premiere Thursday – their first gathering since the shocking death of castmate Anton Yelchin in a freak car accident last month.

Chris Pine, John Cho, Zachary Quinto and Karl Urban all hit the Sydney red carpet with director Justin Lin ahead of the film's July 22 release.

Yelchin, who was 27 at the time of his death, portrayed Chekov in the film series.

"It's bittersweet with the passing of Anton," Urban told The Daily Telegraph of Australia at the premiere. "It's devastating losing someone in your family. This feels like it should be a time for celebration not just of the film but of him, his extraordinary talent and the beautiful man he was."

Urban, a New Zealand native, also admitted he is still very much grieving.

"I'm having a difficult time coming to grips with talking about him in the past tense," he also told the outlet. "It's very raw and very painful."

The cast was initially set to come together for a Q&A in June at the Cannes Lions Festival, but the event was canceled in the wake of Yelchin's death "out of respect."

The actor was pronounced dead after his body was found pinned between his car and the gate of his home in Studio City, California. Police ruled the death as accidental, and said that Yelchin's 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee had rolled backward down the home's steep driveway.

Yelchin's car was the same model Fiat Chrysler Automobiles recalled in April after the vehicle was investigated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for its gearshift design. An LAPD spokesperson told PEOPLE in June that they are investigating whether the gearshift design was related to the accident.

Quinto and others were quick to pay tribute to Yelchin online immediately following his passing, with the actor writing on Instagram, "Our dear friend. our comrade. our Anton. one of the most open and intellectually curious people I have ever had the pleasure to know."

Added fellow Star Trek star Zoë Saldana, "Devastated by our friend's loss. We are mourning his passing and celebrating the beautiful spirit that he was."

by Anonymousreply 555July 14, 2016 1:18 AM

It's too painful to see Anton in Star Trek, that's why they are considering a hard edit.

by Anonymousreply 556July 14, 2016 1:20 AM

Does "hard edit" mean cutting him out of the movie, R556? That would be more painful. How stupid can these people be?

by Anonymousreply 557July 14, 2016 1:28 AM

Karl urban looks odd in r552 pic. Is it the beard that's doing it? Is he chubbier? Normally he looks sexy as hell, but not there.

And he seems to be taking Anton's death very hard. I know they were close. Sad.

by Anonymousreply 558July 14, 2016 1:30 AM

They're not going to edit it. The movie has already had big premieres in Sydney and London.

by Anonymousreply 559July 14, 2016 1:31 AM

Within the next couple of weeks the full toxicology results will probably be released.

by Anonymousreply 560July 14, 2016 1:43 AM

I'm glad to hear that, R559. How infuriating that anyone could even think of removing him from the movie.

by Anonymousreply 561July 14, 2016 1:47 AM

It's not too painful to watch Anton, what bullshit. Those who care (parents, closest friends, a handfull of insane fans he probably has) would definitely not want to watch it without him for some entertainment. The public at large doesn't care that much, come the hell on. It's a young adult B-list actor having an unfortunate accident, not 9/11. We watch and enjoy dead actors all the time. I would be outraged that they cut him for basic decency reasons and because the idea is that stupid.

by Anonymousreply 562July 14, 2016 6:53 AM

I would have been down for a threesome with him and the guy that plays sulu.

by Anonymousreply 563July 14, 2016 8:23 AM

[quote]It's too painful to see Anton in Star Trek

Seriously? This "too painful" bullshit is too deeply entrenched in the pussified class.

by Anonymousreply 564July 14, 2016 12:43 PM

They are not taking his scenes out, more less editing some scenes out. Because, they don't want to depress the audience that Anton had died. It would be too painful to watch him, because he had just died recently.

by Anonymousreply 565July 14, 2016 2:27 PM

WTF qare you talking about and in which language, 565? Back this up with a link or let it be.

#StarTrekBeyond producer JJ Abrams tells The Toronto Star he won't replace the late #AntonYelchin w/anyone else as Chekov in future films.

by Anonymousreply 570July 20, 2016 4:55 AM

I thought Beyond was going to conclude the current reboot?

by Anonymousreply 571July 20, 2016 4:55 AM

Variety reports there will be a 4th film:

[quote]J.J. Abrams Won’t Re-Cast Anton Yelchin’s Role in ‘Star Trek’ Movies

Producer J.J. Abrams has decided that Anton Yelchin’s Pavel Chekov character will not be re-cast for future “Star Trek” movies.

“I would say there’s no replacing him,” Abrams told the Toronto Sun. “There’s no recasting. I can’t possibly imagine that, and I think Anton deserves better.”

Yelchin, who died June 19 in a freak accident, had played the Chekov character in the three reboots. “Star Trek Beond,” the third film in the revamped franchise premieres on Wednesday at Comic-Con in San Diego and opens in theaters on Friday.

Abrams told the newspaper he could not disclose if the next “Star Trek” film would include the death of Chekov’s character. “I have thought about it, we’re working on it, and it’s too early to talk about it,” he said.

Paramount Pictures, Skydance and Bad Robot announced on Monday that they were going ahead with the fourth film in the rebooted “Star Trek” series, starring Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth. They disclosed that Pine’s Captain Kirk will cross paths with his father, described as “a man he never had a chance to meet, but whose legacy has haunted him since the day he was born.”

Hemsworth, who appeared in 2009’s “Star Trek,” will return to the space saga in the father role as George Kirk. The remaining cast — which includes Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho and Simon Pegg — is expected to return.

J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay will write the screenplay. J.J. Abrams and Lindsey Weber will produce through Bad Robot Productions. David Ellison and Dana Goldberg of Skydance will executive produce.

The announcement did not indicate who will direct. Justin Lin directed “Star Trek Beyond” from a script by Doug Jung and Simon Pegg.
