Why does convicted rapist Mike Tyson get a pass for his crime?

I saw him yukking it up on To Tell The Truth tonight and was appalled that he is even ALLOWED on television!

He is no better than Cosby who is shunned and rightly so.

Thoughts???

Tonya Harding never got to skate again professionally but this animal got his license back after raping a woman?

by Anonymousreply 1June 15, 2016 4:57 AM

He was convicted and went to jail. How does that translate as "getting a pass?"

If you're offended that he's on television, then maybe you should reconsider watching shit like "To Tell The Truth."

by Anonymousreply 2June 15, 2016 5:00 AM

Rape gets reported much more often now than back in the days; Tyson was accused of 1(?) rape, Bill Cosby of so many, very different.

by Anonymousreply 3June 15, 2016 5:02 AM

sick shit.

A pass for his crimes in the media for those of you who don't understand context.

by Anonymousreply 5June 15, 2016 5:12 AM

Tyson served 3 years in prison. That's called doing your time. He used to be very grabby with the young ladies, but still this beauty contestant went with him to his hotel room at 2:00 am. No doubt her raped her, her vagina needed to be sewn up. He's an interesting guy. Earned 300 million dollars and is bankrupt. He is a vegan with violent rage issues. He has reinvented himself as a family man and is in recovery but says he lives daily with the dark past of a junkie who loved to snort cocaine and drink and was constantly preoccupied with finding women to bed. Not much to admire, but he doesn't compare to Cosby in any way.

by Anonymousreply 6June 15, 2016 5:17 AM

He's paid his debt to society.

by Anonymousreply 7June 15, 2016 5:21 AM

It's because America loves to give people second chances. I've noticed that during my time here. America loves a good comeback story, for the most part, even when it comes to criminals. Could it be related to America's Christian roots and the whole forgiveness thing?

Also, one other point: There is a tremendous amount of misogyny in America. It's actually really disturbing, and most Americans don't even see it. Canada doesn't have remotely the same amount of misogyny. So crimes against women, including rape? I hate saying this, but I am going to anyway: Rape is not such a big deal to a lot of Americans, who always want to blame the victims.

So it is not surprising that Tyson gets a pass.

by Anonymousreply 8June 15, 2016 5:21 AM

He paid his debt in prison. Also, if you believe in karma, it came back around on Tyson when his young daughter drowned a few years back.

by Anonymousreply 9June 15, 2016 6:33 AM

If you think 3 years in jail, for raping a young woman so violently that her vagina needed stitching, is 'paying your debt to society', you are an idiot.

by Anonymousreply 10June 15, 2016 7:07 AM

Agree that sentences for rape are generally far too lenient, but the salient difference is that

1) Tyson did go to jail and do real time

2) He comes from a rough background and is very obviously deeply troubled

3) He has a public image as a dumb and ill-controlled bruiser, very different from Cosby's hypocritical "funny, wholesome uncle" image.

So Tyson doesn't get a pass so much as he gets forgiven (but not forgotten). Cosby is a being revealed as a nasty, abusive hypocrite very different from his beloved image, and a lot of people are just now being forced to face that.

by Anonymousreply 11June 15, 2016 8:19 AM

Yes he served prison time and is able to live his life as a free man.

Does that mean he should get the chance to be on TV and be treated like hey its no big deal that he violently forced his body on an 18 year old and his own wife?

Why are some of you white washing his actions? Why does Rosie O'Donnell rightly condemn sexual assault and then embrace this thug like he is some misunderstood kid?

He bit someone's ear off and we are suppose to just laugh it off as Mike being Mike.

by Anonymousreply 12June 15, 2016 2:32 PM

I have a relative who lived in Las Vegas and was interested in boxing who met Tyson and others in boxing.

He said that Tyson was someone who literally had no boundaries and had no understanding of boundaries.

If I remember correctly, he told me that he witnessed Tyson making lewd remarks to the daughter of his coach, right in front of her father.

Completely clueless.

by Anonymousreply 13June 15, 2016 3:32 PM

It's a mystery, OP.

I have to be honest, I love that show, R14, I have mixed feelings about watching it and laughing. At first I thought it was an impersonator doing his voice but it's really him, he does a good job of making fun of his own stupidity.

by Anonymousreply 15June 15, 2016 4:15 PM

On his way up in the late 80s before he truly became a superstar boxer, I waited on him and Robin Givens at a restaurant in NYC. He was weird and paranoid and demanding. He called me a "fucking faggot" under his breath as I stood at the table. I put a gay mal' occhio on him right there, and down he (eventually) went.

Wanna be next?

by Anonymousreply 16June 15, 2016 4:15 PM

If he showed a little remorse I could understand people forgiving him but he acted like he did nothing wrong.

by Anonymousreply 17June 15, 2016 9:43 PM

He didn't. It's people like Bill Clinton who get a pass.

by Anonymousreply 18June 15, 2016 9:59 PM

We're still going to be throwing the darkies up the pop charts for punching each other's faces sensless in the boxing ring, right?

by Anonymousreply 19June 15, 2016 10:44 PM

Anyone who will chew off a guy's ear gets a pass. Geez didn't you take basic law in school?

by Anonymousreply 20June 15, 2016 11:00 PM

R15, I love it also. And I also felt weird about enjoying it so much, but fuck it, it's hilarious.

If Mike had raped a white lady would he have gotten this free ride in the media?

by Anonymousreply 22June 16, 2016 4:34 AM

He did the crime, he did the time. The entertainment industry isn't exactly a fount of morality. He's a free man, so there's nothing to stop him from pursuing and being used in whatever show.

by Anonymousreply 23June 16, 2016 4:58 AM

The morning after she was supposedly raped, she was performing in a brief costume. She did not have a bruise on her. Because of experiences I have had, that is hard for me to understand. I mean, didn't she say no, even once.? I don't like Tyson but it is hard for me to believe the girl was actually raped. He did serve two years in prison.

by Anonymousreply 24June 16, 2016 5:07 AM

Mike Tyson is hot as fuck and have long wished that he would rape ME.

by Anonymousreply 29June 16, 2016 10:09 AM

R29.

Its not rape if you want it.

by Anonymousreply 30June 16, 2016 1:37 PM

Mike Tyson could have done so much good with this world.

by Anonymousreply 31June 16, 2016 7:26 PM

Has the Me too era curtailed his TV career finally?

by Anonymousreply 32January 20, 2019 4:09 AM

Are we still supposed to hate Robin Givens? I never did, but most people seemed to. Did it hurt her career? She's certainly not a big name anymore, I haven't thought of her in years.

by Anonymousreply 33January 20, 2019 4:16 AM

stitched up from this? she must have been tight as hell

[quote] The morning after she was supposedly raped, she was performing in a brief costume.

So, you're actually saying she was dressed provocatively?!?

Are you somehow posting from he year 1973?

by Anonymousreply 36January 20, 2019 4:31 AM

He posed nude?

by Anonymousreply 37January 20, 2019 4:40 AM

And, if rumors are true, in the late 80s, he was occasionally seen in gay/drag clubs.

by Anonymousreply 38January 20, 2019 4:50 AM

Rapist

by Anonymousreply 39January 21, 2019 8:51 PM

He didn’t rape her...he just treated her like he treated the rest of his groupies. It pissed her off.

by Anonymousreply 40January 21, 2019 8:56 PM

I remember when his tiny meat pictures came out. It was hysterical. Almost as bad as the boxer in the ladies underwear. In his prime though he had a rocking body and I thought he was sexy as hell. I always thought he was gay though.

R36 I think what he was saying is that she had no visible bruises after the incident.

by Anonymousreply 42January 21, 2019 9:08 PM

That's not Tyson, R41.

by Anonymousreply 43January 21, 2019 9:11 PM

Some feminist SUPERHERO Rosie is championing this unrepentant rapist.

Rosie is such a damned hypocrite. She has double standards for Cosby and Tyson.

by Anonymousreply 45June 2, 2021 2:04 AM

Straight men get away with everything. The world was set-up to always protect straight men from absolutely everything under the sun, no matter how bad, heinous, or downright hypocritical and cruel their actions are.

by Anonymousreply 46June 2, 2021 2:06 AM

OP you haven’t noticed that American culture is celebrity obsessed? It doesn’t matter what you do, give it enough time and people will still kiss your ass if you are a celebrity. We have a very sick culture here in the US.

by Anonymousreply 47June 2, 2021 2:21 AM

Robin Givens said in her book that he raped her too.

by Anonymousreply 48June 2, 2021 2:51 AM

If you're in America and you excel at combat sports or any other athletic endeavor, you are a GOD to be worshiped, excused, and forgiven.

by Anonymousreply 49June 2, 2021 5:55 AM

R12 So no one who has served and completed a prison sentence should be able to resume their career or earn a living? Or is it just for sex crimes? Who gets to be the arbiter of who is and isn’t allowed to work after being paroled/discharged? If you can’t ever get over what Tyson did, fine. But this is America, man. If there’s a market for his services, let him earn and get on with his life.

by Anonymousreply 50June 2, 2021 6:20 AM

He might do okay on JustForFans as long as he doesn't speak. That voice is a boner killer.

by Anonymousreply 51June 2, 2021 6:38 AM

Doesn't he have a mental disability/very low IQ. I think people may be willing to give him a pass because of this.

by Anonymousreply 52June 2, 2021 7:43 AM

He's mentally slow and had a history of violent behavior. Maybe it was traumatic head injury from boxing? Anyway as others have noted, he did serve his time. I think he is a scumbag for his treatment of Robin Givens who was victim-blamed by way too many people. He clearly abused a lot of women and is deeply misogynistic.
