Bert Convy

To anyone on here who remembers the game show host, film actor, Bert Convy. What was he like as a person? I know he was married twice. He has three children. His daughter, Jennifer Convy, hosted a show on HGTV in the 1990's called Awesome Interiors. Bert Convy died of a brain tumor in 1991. Let's get the discussion about him started.

I seriously thought that he was agay

by Anonymousreply 1June 4, 2016 11:25 AM

I saw him in CABARET. Good voice.

by Anonymousreply 2June 4, 2016 11:25 AM

Wasn't he considered for the male lead - Tony - in the film version of WEST SIDE STORY? Seriously!

by Anonymousreply 3June 4, 2016 11:27 AM

He may have been married but I'll eat my hat if he wasn't gay.

I really like Bert Convy. He has a smallish role in what should be a DL classic: Susan Slade.

by Anonymousreply 4June 4, 2016 11:40 AM

Always had a crush on him

by Anonymousreply 5June 4, 2016 11:42 AM

Bert Convy sang on the Tonight Show in 1978.

I was never really attracted to Bert Convy, he always seemed just too pleasant and benign. (nothing wrong with that)

However, when he gives this really intense,," I wanna fuck you " stare to Cheryl Ladd in this clip from "Love Boat Angels" I realized he could definitely be sexy.

Everyone was sexy in that clip, R7, even Gavin MacLeod. Too bad he (and Smith) turned out to be nutters.

He and Burt Reynolds were bros back in the day, I used to come home from school and watch 'Win, Lose or Draw', which Convey hosted and Reynolds was almost always a guest star on, along with his coterie of pals: Charles Nelson Reilly, Dom Deluise and probably some other gay people who I can't remember right now. After Convey passed, Vicki Lawrence took over hosting duties. I always remember the closing credits V.O.: 'Win, Lose or Draw is a Burt and Bert Production!'

by Anonymousreply 16June 4, 2016 12:48 PM

Reynolds was friends to a LOT of queens, both closeted and out. Burt and Bert Productions sealed the deal for me as far as deciding whether Convy was gay or not.

by Anonymousreply 17June 4, 2016 12:53 PM

He shopped in my grocery store!

by Anonymousreply 18June 4, 2016 1:23 PM

He was among that generation of celebrities who you always saw on television but you were never quite sure why he was famous, what his talents were, etc. It's like "Name a Bert Convy movie!" and no one could answer.

by Anonymousreply 19June 4, 2016 2:38 PM

by Anonymousreply 23June 4, 2016 4:25 PM

Why did Bert Convy and Anne Anderson divorce?

by Anonymousreply 24June 4, 2016 5:42 PM

Always thought he was hot in a nice guy sort of way.

by Anonymousreply 25June 5, 2016 1:07 AM

Before he was a host, he often guested on game shows. he was like Phyllis Newman and some others who were "famous" but it wasn't clear why.

by Anonymousreply 26June 5, 2016 2:30 AM

He played Paul Revere on Bewitched when they visited Salem

by Anonymousreply 27June 5, 2016 2:38 AM

I always thought of him as a Ken doll.

by Anonymousreply 30June 5, 2016 2:46 AM

Bert Convy was a successful Broadway actor, having played Perchik in the original cast of Fiddler on the Roof and then the second male lead in Cabaret. Could have had a big career if he hadn't decided to be a "Quiz Master!"

by Anonymousreply 31June 5, 2016 2:56 AM

Was he Jewish?

by Anonymousreply 32June 5, 2016 4:48 AM

Bert was gay but did not feel the need to act upon it. The lifestyle was not so accepted then, so he chose to desire women.

by Anonymousreply 33June 5, 2016 4:53 AM

No, he was NOT Jewish.

by Anonymousreply 34June 5, 2016 5:08 AM

Convy is an Irish surname.

He's one of those British Isles descendants who for some reason people think is Jewish.

The Naughton brothers, James and David and actor James Woods also fall into that category.

by Anonymousreply 35June 5, 2016 12:19 PM

The blandest guy ever.

As someone up above said - a Ken doll.

And like Ken, I suspect he has no penis.

by Anonymousreply 36June 5, 2016 12:26 PM

Jill Haworth, who played Sally Bowles, loved working with him in Cabaret.

by Anonymousreply 37June 5, 2016 12:49 PM

I saw him in both the original Fiddler and Cabaret. He was serviceable, bland, did the job, but was totally forgettable. He's fit right in with the stars on Broadway today.

by Anonymousreply 38June 5, 2016 1:25 PM

I always thought he was sexy as hell.

by Anonymousreply 39June 5, 2016 1:27 PM

Bert Convy seemed like the kind of guy who had a clean cut image. A family man with a wife. I don't know if he had any controversies surrounding him when he was alive.

by Anonymousreply 40June 5, 2016 1:27 PM

Wasn't he rocking a perm in the '80s, I just remember thinking that he was good looking but the big hair seemed a bit dated and cheesy.

by Anonymousreply 41June 5, 2016 1:55 PM

Helmet hair and massive honker.

That's why the dummy types assume he's Jewish

by Anonymousreply 42June 5, 2016 5:25 PM

He played Tony Polar in the bad TV remake of VALLEY OF THE DOLLS 1980

by Anonymousreply 43June 5, 2016 6:43 PM

He played Veronica Hamel's lover in the bad TV remake of VALLEY OF THE DOLLS 1980.

by Anonymousreply 44June 5, 2016 7:06 PM

Notorious pussyhound. Big Bush supporter.

by Anonymousreply 45June 5, 2016 7:23 PM

Bert Convy had his people let the folks at Saturday Night Live he was available to guest host. The folks at SNL never replied back.

by Anonymousreply 46June 5, 2016 7:28 PM

He seemed like a nice guy. He and John Davidson seemed interchangeable at times.

The son? WTF with that video?

by Anonymousreply 47June 5, 2016 7:29 PM

Great Idea. Let's start a rumor: Bert Convy and John Davidson were lovers.

by Anonymousreply 48June 5, 2016 7:42 PM

He did win an EMMY award for Tattletales

by Anonymousreply 49June 5, 2016 7:46 PM

He and Victoria Wyndham guested on the Mary Tyler Moore Show as husband and wife. Mary winds up dating Convy's character after Vicky's character leaves him. Good episode. Season 4, I think, because Rhoda was still around.

He was a douchebag who was obsessively homophobic on his Win, Lose or Draw game show. Because he wasn't funny. The only way he could get laughs is by implying someone is gay, the height of 1987 hilarity. And no, I don't care that he was "cute" or the other defense would be that he was secretly gay. He was just a stupid, offensive creep.

Gay banter was standard for all game shows from 1973 through 1992. I don't recall him ever being mean or homophobic about it but if you have video of his crimes I'm willing to watch and see for myself.

Is the son trying to ride his father's coat tails in Hollywood? Because maybe 10 people under the age of 50 know who Burt Convy is and I can't imagine the people who do remember him being too impressed by meeting or working with his son.

I'm sure that the son met Dom and Burt and the gang so it must sting to get booted from that world after your dad dies.

R42 well that and the fact that he was in productions like Fiddler on the Roof!

A lot of names get Americanized when families come over.

Im sticking with Jewish. He had that vibe in spades. (Irish? Yeah right) More sure if that than the gay thing.

by Anonymousreply 62June 6, 2016 5:05 PM

At least Jennifer is not writing on her father's coat tails because she has done well for herself. Bert would have been proud of her.

by Anonymousreply 63June 6, 2016 6:06 PM

"Aren't you Bert Convy's boy? Wow, I'd love to give you a job or invest in your acting career. I'm sure that you've got some of that ol' Bert Convy magic that will pay off at the box office!"

He was extremely looking when he was very young. The Susan Slade days. Remained good looking. He seemed as dumb as a box of rocks though. Everytime he hosted a game show it was like it was the first time he did it. Especially Password Plus. Everytime he hosted you wonder if he's ever heard about the show. As good looking as he was he had zero sex appeal.
