The bad reviews might be because it's one of the only biographies to imply he had a sexual relationship with the minister and all of his gay encounters.

I don't recall the S&M stuff, but from what I've read, it was not true. It was mentioned in Kenneth Anger's Hollywood Babylon, which as much as I Iove, is not entirely factual.

Most of Jimmy's gay encounters were with men who had the upper hand. Rogers Bracket and all the men he blew, in order to get jobs. I think he was gay but it seemed he could have been a bit sexually confused. Dean was abandoned by his father and his mother died when he was very young. That gave him abandonment issues. He was groomed by a local preacher in his hometown. He was vulnerable due to his desire for a father figure and probably consented to that sexual relationship. Noticed his pattern of sleeping with older men like Rogers Bracketts and other studio heads. He was essentially a hustler during his young adult years when he was trying to launch his career in LA and NYC.
