Anyone ever been to the shithole that is Vancouver Canada

A friend of mine went there for work and was there for about two weeks. He said it was one of the worst cities he ever stayed in. Even worse than Montreal. Rude arrogant extremely self centered people. Over run with horrible arrogant Chinese citizens who bought their way into the country. The downtown east side is a war zone worse than most places in the USA. These are my friends words not mine. So what are your experiences in the number two shithole of the pacific northwest after Seattle.

by Anonymousreply 248September 2, 2020 8:18 AM

I've been there, it was kind of depressing. I wouldn't go back. I liked Montreal though. I probably wouldn't want to live in Montreal, bit it was nice to visit once or twice.

by Anonymousreply 1May 29, 2016 5:40 AM

Chinese are like rats. They dig through garbage. Horrible manners too.

by Anonymousreply 2May 29, 2016 5:40 AM

I read that Vancouver BC is one of the most expensive cities in the world. Apparently its real estate is up there. Maybe what happened is V. was an up-and-coming city in the 1980s or so and this created a real estate feeding frenzy and now the people that make a city word class, can't afford to live there.

by Anonymousreply 3May 29, 2016 5:45 AM

Vancouver is now a Chinese city.

by Anonymousreply 4May 29, 2016 5:45 AM

Partly, r3. My sister lived there in the mid eighties, she did her residency there. She lived across the street from the Granville Island ferry. Vancouver real estate was expensive then, but nothing like now. A lot of Chinese money, much of it illegal, is driving real estate prices. Many of the homes sit empty. It's a big problem.

by Anonymousreply 5May 29, 2016 5:52 AM

Does it need a wall too?

by Anonymousreply 6May 29, 2016 5:54 AM

Chinese people bring down the quality (and smell) of life.

by Anonymousreply 7May 29, 2016 5:56 AM

OP, so how's the celibate thing going?

by Anonymousreply 8May 29, 2016 6:01 AM

Vancouver is a beautiful city. It's surroundings are breathtaking. Unfortunately, Chinese nationals have driven up real estate prices to the point that very few locals can afford property.

by Anonymousreply 9May 29, 2016 6:02 AM

It's no longer called Vancouver. The correct name is Hongcouver.

by Anonymousreply 10May 29, 2016 6:12 AM

How'd so many Chinese get in?

by Anonymousreply 11May 29, 2016 6:14 AM

Best Canadian city is Montreal if you want ambiance, most LGBT friendly, best underground and subway system and most laid back.

Toronto is nice but tries to hard to be like NYC.

by Anonymousreply 12May 29, 2016 6:16 AM

Bitch, what did you say about Seattle?

Vancouver was astounding 8, even 6, years ago. Now it's gone to the cockroach Chinese. The entire northern west coast is. Vancouver, Seattle, Portland. Drive downtown after 8 p.m. in any of those cities and the lights aren't on because the owners all live in Hong Kong.

Leave the Mexicans alone. It's the Chinese that are killing us.

by Anonymousreply 13May 29, 2016 6:26 AM

Yeah all of Canada went full throttle on the diversity thing and is getting ruined just like the rest of the west.

by Anonymousreply 14May 29, 2016 6:30 AM

R13, the Chinese have already taken over North America, you can't blame diversity you have to blame these cheap politicians who sold out the country and people's jobs just to save a couple of dollars and taxes.

by Anonymousreply 15May 29, 2016 6:40 AM

I live in a college town in Oregon and it's getting overrun with Chinese. The housing and rent prices are skyrocketing. The university here is accepting way more students from China than Oregonian students....you know, the ones whose parents have been paying taxes forever to keep the school running, and now their kids can't get in. The schools make a massive amount of money off foreign students. American students routinely complain about classes having no seats available because of the huge amount of foreign (Chinese and Arab) students, as well as no where to live. Students have been living in sheds in people's backyards because they cannot afford the huge rents. There is a crisis here and something has got to give sooner or later.

by Anonymousreply 16May 29, 2016 6:44 AM

Sad to say, R10, it's been twenty years since I first heard that..

Hear, hear, R13. As a native and former resident of San Francisco, I heartily concur. They work the system like no other ethnicity, and if you cringing SJWs think white folks are racist (so racist in fact that every other race wants into white countries), just spend some time in a major West Coast city where the pet eaters have nested in any great number. Especially if you're black. They'll fuck with you relentlessly.

San Francisco has never recovered from the City Hall murders, one wonders if maybe Moscone and Milk weren't in the way of someone's plans for the city.

by Anonymousreply 17May 29, 2016 6:50 AM

[quote]Best Canadian city is Montreal if you want ambiance, most LGBT friendly, best underground and subway system and most laid back.

And also if you want racism, archaic language laws and anglophone hate.

by Anonymousreply 18May 29, 2016 8:01 AM

R12, they aren't even allowed English signs on stores, even if the store IS ENGLISH! LMAO

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 19May 29, 2016 8:04 AM

They had to fight for TWO YEARS to add English on Subway menus. Yet Quebec expects the rest of Canada to learn French and have everything in both languages. They themselves refuse to have anything in English though, of course! No wonder the Anglophones fled the province, and are still fleeing from the bigoted assholes.

Oh, and R12, the fact that you think Montreal is so perfect just proves you know NOTHING about Montreal or Quebec in general. Montreal is ripe with corruption and crumbling infrastructure. Then there's the racism issue, they hate blacks there are many neo nazis. Then of course they refuse to speak English or offer services in English. Their language police have banned all English throughout the province. Montreal was an amazing city at one point, when the English and French were allowed to speak their own language. Then the language police took over and banned all English, so that most businesses fled the city and the province. The anglophones got sick of being treated as second class citizens in their own country, so they left. Today there's mostly just French people left, because all the Anglophones were bullied out.

Same in Auckland, NZ, where Chinese speculators have driven up housing prices to complete unaffordability for residents. It is now the most unaffordable housing anywhere, relative to salaries. And worst of all, the houses are flimsy cracker boxes, hardly worth even a fifth of the million dollar prices.

by Anonymousreply 21May 29, 2016 8:31 AM

R12, here you go :) Your lovely bigoted province is doing SO WELL!

La Belle Province comes close to dead last in almost every measure of private sector investment

I can guarantee you if there were no Asians in Vancouver but everything else was the exact same the OP would love it.

by Anonymousreply 23May 29, 2016 8:36 AM

Quebec speaks a bizarre version of French. A weird combination of French and English. Je suis disappointé for example. WTF??

by Anonymousreply 24May 29, 2016 8:40 AM

Who cares ? I hear it rains a lot there. The Chinese can have it.

by Anonymousreply 25May 29, 2016 8:50 AM

Why don't they just stay in China? I always to see that about wealthy immigrants. If everything is fine for you where you come from why leave? I wish our government would bring people who are actually in need.

by Anonymousreply 26May 29, 2016 8:56 AM

R26 Invasion of a future superpower and ready network of spies in case of future warfare.

by Anonymousreply 27May 29, 2016 9:00 AM

Trump is the answer.

by Anonymousreply 28May 29, 2016 9:05 AM

R28 What has he got to do with Canada ? Fuckwit.

by Anonymousreply 29May 29, 2016 9:10 AM

I think, R29, R28 means that Trump would try to drive the Chinese out of Canada, 'cause you know - Canada is CLOSE to the US. In his dim mind, Canada is probably just like a big, slobbering puppy that wants its master, the US, to help IT banish "aliens" like he wants to do with the US vis Mexico.

by Anonymousreply 30May 29, 2016 9:14 AM

I live in Seattle, work at Amazon and f'ing hate it (Amazon, not Seattle). I've been interviewing a lot at other tech leaders and I swear to god, I'm the only white guy in the building. I've had a couple of interviews (at Zillow and Google) where I couldn't understand the questions of the interviewer because of their loose command of our language. It was ridiculous and I felt like a racist in my feedback to the recruiter but wtf was I supposed to do? All Chinese and Indian and Baltic people.

Where do we fit in anymore?

by Anonymousreply 31May 29, 2016 9:14 AM

Just be grateful it's not the Muslims.

by Anonymousreply 32May 29, 2016 9:17 AM

I appreciate this thread. I visited Vancouver once several years ago and was disappointed by it. There's a lot of positive spin about the city but it didn't live up to the hype. Depressing is a good word for the place. I liked Stanley Park though.

by Anonymousreply 33May 29, 2016 9:26 AM

Vancouver is a shithole. Don't forget the huge amount of homeless/mentally ill/drug addicts in the streets. And serial killer types with beards and baseball/trucker hats. And no culture. None. Zero intelligent conversation. And nothing to do. And no sunshine - grey skies or rain most of the time. And nowhere interesting to go nearby - just other boring places for miles. The house prices first went up with the Hong Kong rush to get out of China before the Chinese takeover, and have stayed inflated. A joke to have such high prices when there is zero culture and zero to do. It is also nicknamed "no fun city." People are rude and dishonest. It's hell for anyone intelligent or kind.

by Anonymousreply 34May 29, 2016 9:27 AM

Re: Quebec, Montreal, Vancouver

Well, if I had to pick who I'd rather live with, the Chinese or the French....I'd go with the French.

by Anonymousreply 35May 29, 2016 9:27 AM

Trump is anti-immigration. Vancouver's problem is immigration. Europe's problem is immigration. The US's problem is immigration.

wake up.

by Anonymousreply 36May 29, 2016 9:29 AM

>>The house prices first went up with the Hong Kong rush to get out of China before the Chinese takeover, and have stayed inflated. Sorry to be a bore, but this is equally true of Auckland. So glad I got out.

by Anonymousreply 37May 29, 2016 9:30 AM

I forge the exact amount, but the Canadian government would let Chinese who invested above a certain dollar amount into the country.

They're all afraid of the Communists and of losing it all, so they are happy to park their money in the West.

Hell on real estate prices though.

by Anonymousreply 38May 29, 2016 9:37 AM

R37 Auckland or Australia, the Chinese are taking over.

by Anonymousreply 39May 29, 2016 9:38 AM

Better the Chinese than Muslims.

by Anonymousreply 40May 29, 2016 9:55 AM

You can't swing a cat without knocking down a herd of Chinese and Indians here in San Jose. Pushy, rude, and they travel in packs.

(I'm so glad for DL. I'd get burned at the stake for saying these things elsewhere.)

by Anonymousreply 41May 29, 2016 9:56 AM

Went to Vancouver in 1996 - am Canadian but was living in Australia (and that's a WHOLE other story if I had the time) at the time. I was there at some stupid energy efficiency conference. I was only in Vancouver 4 days but it RAINED and was foggy......and while I desperately missed my home country Canada - I was so put off by Vancouver. Now they've radioactive junk and fish washing up on the entire western coast.

Nope. You can have it and Good Luck. I live in the Maritimes. Paraochial and corrupt with idiotic political leaders but I'll take it over Hongcouver.

Quebec ? Doesn't even exist for me. And I'm bilingual raised in a French Culture from Ontario. It's a sad country.......

by Anonymousreply 42May 29, 2016 10:02 AM

We're going to build a wall and make those rich Chinese pay for it!

by Anonymousreply 43May 29, 2016 10:17 AM

Yeah, there is no where to live, R42.

by Anonymousreply 44May 29, 2016 10:20 AM

R42 You're a Franco Ontarian then? Montreal and Quebec could be wonderful but the whole language racism is so stupid. Joual is not Parisian French in the slightest. I love it on French TV when they put subtitles on for the Quebec based shows! Montreal is a great city but like any place it has real problems.

by Anonymousreply 45May 29, 2016 10:32 AM

I used to be "super liberal," but now I just feel like the people of Judeo-Christian backgrounds are just being invaded by hordes of 3rd world idiots who take, take, take. I used to love "diversity" until I started having to interact with them on a daily basis.

by Anonymousreply 46May 29, 2016 10:41 AM

It takes a good 2-3 years for Chinese student immigrants to assimilate and once they do they are pretty decent citizens. But up until then, bearing in mind the kids who get to study in the west are from politically elite families, they are rude, obnoxious little shits. Many are from insignificant cities in the interior and are used to being big fish in a small pond and have little manners or social skills in interacting with peers.

Also racist - any one who is not a "hot", idealised white person, they hate. If you know a bit of the language, the stuff they say about black people is toe curling, let alone other Asians.

Even the Japanese don't pull that shit abroad.

by Anonymousreply 47May 29, 2016 10:52 AM

So awesome to hear all the different opinions of the shithole of Vancouver Canada. I have been to Seattle which is culturally bankrupt and a real dump of a city. Without Microsoft and Boeing and Amazon it would be totally dead so lucky for them. When I went to Seattle my buddy wanted to go north to Vancouver and I declined. There is nothing there I need to see. I heard there is non-stop overcast weather, just like in Seattle and that would depress the shit out of me. I have been to Montreal and I hated it. The people were just meh and since I don't speak french I had a headache the whole time from not understanding what the fuck all the signs said.

by Anonymousreply 48May 29, 2016 10:53 AM

China is the next world superpower. So people might want to get used to it now.

by Anonymousreply 49May 29, 2016 11:31 AM

The men in Montreal and Toronto are better. Vancouver's demographic sucks for men. Good for families and all that. Horrible for men and sex etc. But I'm sure they're great with kids.

by Anonymousreply 50May 29, 2016 11:58 AM

Is Vancouver good for rice queens then ?

by Anonymousreply 51May 29, 2016 12:03 PM

So when white people drive up housing prices in New York and San Francisco, it's fine but when the Chinese do it, it's terrible?

by Anonymousreply 52May 29, 2016 12:16 PM

That's the problem. Foreigners are not allowed to buy properties in China.

by Anonymousreply 53May 29, 2016 12:18 PM

R48, which world-class city do you live in to be such a harsh judge of Vancouver and Seattle?

by Anonymousreply 54May 29, 2016 12:33 PM

[quote]Even the Japanese don't pull that shit abroad.

Yes they do. You simply don't understand the subtlety of Japanese derision and racism.

by Anonymousreply 55May 29, 2016 12:39 PM

"I have been to Seattle which is culturally bankrupt and a real dump of a city. Without Microsoft and Boeing and Amazon it would be totally dead so lucky for them."

You forgot Nordstrom, T-Mobile, REI, Costco, Starbucks, Expedia, Alaska Air, etc.

Don't be pissy just because you can't afford to live there.

by Anonymousreply 56May 29, 2016 12:41 PM

R56 sounds like a Vancouverite. They are proud of inflated real estate prices. They think it is a personal accomplishment. Meanwhile zero life, zero culture.

by Anonymousreply 57May 29, 2016 12:57 PM

R57 Too true. Vancouver Canada and Seattle the shithole are the equivalent of Kim and Khloe Kardashian. Over-inflated. Nothing going on. Worth millions based on nothing.

by Anonymousreply 58May 29, 2016 1:02 PM

No, R56, I'm on the east coast. But I think Seattle is gorgeous w fantastic food, vibe, outdoor high quality of life. Downtown is a little gnarly after dark, but there's a reason everyone is flocking to it. Vancouver, on the other hand, does seem to have turned on itself. I think R57's Pacific Rim boyfriend kicked him to the curb. Bitter little queen.

by Anonymousreply 59May 29, 2016 1:04 PM

You racis MARY's should stick to your Podunk shitholes

by Anonymousreply 60May 29, 2016 1:04 PM

I bet the local property owners love the Chinese for driving up their prices.

by Anonymousreply 61May 29, 2016 1:07 PM

R60 Lol I am sure no one has gone near your disgusting illiterate shit hole in years Mary.

by Anonymousreply 62May 29, 2016 1:07 PM

I'd be happy to get an Asian boyfriend and settle down there.

by Anonymousreply 63May 29, 2016 1:10 PM

R56, where were you in Seattle? What did you do? Where did you go? Which restaurants, clubs, events, neighborhoods? And it sounds as if you never even made it to Vancouver.

by Anonymousreply 64May 29, 2016 1:12 PM

The Chinese cunt I used to work with (who had my same title and would overtly compete with me and do insanely obnoxious things) used to go on and on about how great VanCOooVAH was, but even she said she couldn't afford it.

What do the chinks do when they get there? Are they already loaded from China or do they somehow get jobs - and how the hell are they getting so many visas? Is Canada just like - come the fuck in, we don't care?

by Anonymousreply 65May 29, 2016 1:12 PM

My bf and I have wanted to move to Seattle for years and have a little cabin out on one of the islands. So stunningly beautiful out there.

by Anonymousreply 66May 29, 2016 1:14 PM

Canada just interested in the Chinks money.

by Anonymousreply 67May 29, 2016 1:15 PM

by Anonymousreply 74May 29, 2016 1:23 PM

Well, I know investments are part of it, but they haven't they thought of the long term implications in property values, culture, etc...? Canadians were capable of making Vancouver a nice city without Chinese money.

by Anonymousreply 75May 29, 2016 1:23 PM

Canada used to have a visa prgm similar to the US EB5 Investor visa. It got so abused by the Chinese, it was stopped, but not before they emigrated to Canada en masse, esp Vancouver.

The Canadians have foreigner visa pgms for students, workers, professionals, families, etc. They're diversifying their nation into self-directed oblivion.

There are over 250,000 Chinese students in US universities. Of course its about their ability to pay in full, but how fucking stupid is it to educate your biggest competitor?

by Anonymousreply 76May 29, 2016 1:24 PM

France and Italy here - no, no one removes shoes. Crimes against local taste? Well for one thing, in Italy, it's almost a crime to ever arrive on time to a dinner or party. And people have absolutely no shame at all at being late for anything else. Also, they take good personal presentation very seriously. They spend a huge amount on clothes, accessories and hair. Slobs are really looked down on, as is poor personal hygiene and less than spotless homes. A big insult both in Italy and France is to be called maleducato/mal educé or malevato/mal élèvé (badly educated or badly brought up). Your manners reflect on your family and training. Saying to someone in N America - were you raised in a barn? doesn't have the same import at all. Mothers love it when you tell them their child is well brouught up.

by Anonymousreply 77May 29, 2016 1:25 PM

[quote]they haven't they thought of the long term implications in property values, culture, etc...?

The governments, all levels and parties ONLY care about money and personal profit. Same thing happening in Europe.

Sometimes I like to fantasize about what a troll like this OP must be like. How does he spend his days? In a cinder block building on the outskirts of Des Moines? In a duplex just east of Wichita? He thawed a salisbury steak for dinner, the ding of the microwave the only sound to split the silent heavy air. A bird chirps from his cage in the dark corner. And he clicks refresh, refresh, refresh, hoping for a reaction, any reaction, from the anonymous ether.

by Anonymousreply 88May 29, 2016 1:36 PM

Most likely he has traveled and experienced more than you, R88

by Anonymousreply 89May 29, 2016 1:38 PM

Vancouver and the Pacific Northwest in general have been in the grips of a serious meth epidemic for almost two decades. You can't walk down any street without coming across a meth addict. That tells you all you need to know about the region.

by Anonymousreply 90May 29, 2016 1:42 PM

Second-generation Chinese do integrate very well. I know I'd rather have a Chinese surgeon or dentist who obsessively slaved away at university due to family pressure than a non-Chinese who spent his (or her) university years drinking and partying.

China is one place (after Syria, Iraq, Japan, South Africa) where you would NEVER in a million years ever ever want to buy property and permanently live there.

by Anonymousreply 94May 29, 2016 1:53 PM

That's because they are smarter than whites, R53.

by Anonymousreply 95May 29, 2016 1:59 PM

Let's not forget the pathetic Vancouver riots because their hockey team lost. Utter desolation because of a damned game. The best part of that riot was some loser teen who was jumping on a demolished car in a mask acting like the fearsome hick he is finally getting caught. He was forced to apologize on national tv in tears! Oh man, the satisfaction when douchebags don't have their mama to save them. This BS is something only white people can conjure.

All hail the mighty dollar!! I feel bad for NYC (which is not normally a sentiment I have for that city) for what the Chinese are doing. Developers spent the last 5-10 years basically whoring themselves out to Asians, assisted by the realtor partnerships across countries.... all the time everyone is profiting at record levels & commissions are off the charts, for empty apartments. What whore would give up a paycheck like that in the short term for the sanctity of NYC in the long term?

China recently passed some law making it harder to invest in foreign real estate, and the poor realtwhores are all in a panic. So sad.

by Anonymousreply 100May 29, 2016 2:19 PM

I remember just ten years ago people were saying Vancouver was overbuilt, that its forest of green glass condos would never be sold, that is was a Green Glass Detroit. And here are they are all snapped by the Chinese. It was an even bigger blessing to Chicago, which built something like 100,000 downtown units that were intended for old people, but old people can't afford to move with low interest on their money, so without the Chinese they'd be selling about 10 condos a year in Chicago with 90,000 empty new units. And instead prices halfway recovered from 2011, owing to the Chinese. The realtwhores had better be worried.

by Anonymousreply 101May 29, 2016 2:38 PM

I went there for a vacation about 5 years ago. Planned to stay 10 days but left after 3. It was truly horrible, and I'm Canadian.

R46 said: "I used to love "diversity" until I started having to interact with them on a daily basis."

To a certain extent, I feel similarly - well, as far as foreign immigration is concerned. Liberal immigration policies seem idealistic/noble in theory - but in practice, it is rife with problems that tempt one to retreat to a less "progressive" mindset. Immigration can - and does - put Westerners in situations where they are interacting with people who come from parts of the world where mentalities and behavior patterns are just not up to Western standards. So you're interacting with people who have weak concepts of Western standards of politeness, ethics, and proper business decorum; people whose sexist attitudes can hearken back to the 16th century; and people who can be retrograde racists. Oh, joy - just what we need - people who can accelerate a decline in overall civility and standards.

This is a worst-case scenario of what can happen when one deals with certain immigrants. Sure, there are unethical business people of American/Western origin, but the vast majority of them would know better than to pull THIS:

My hotel was right by where the streetwalkers worked their trade (apparently it's legal?) in little groups of a half dozen or so. One night it started raining, and they all produced little umbrellas and carried on as usual. The sight of them standing there under their umbrellas was so cute, and somehow very civilized.

I haven't been to Vancouver for five or six years, but I always thought it would be the only place I could live in Canada, because it's the only major metro area there with somewhat decent weather. (Decent compared to Toronto, Montreal, etc., not to California!)

It's in a gorgeous setting; somewhat similar to SF or Seattle. Does anyone watch the Canadian TV series "Motive?" They used to show it in the summer on ABC, but now it's on USA (new shows to the US, not repeats.) It's set in Vancouver and there are a lot of exterior shots of the city.

by Anonymousreply 108May 29, 2016 5:59 PM

I visited Vancouver in 1982. While there was an Asian or two outside of a regular Chinatown, it was still a prim, white city then, with blue laws and decorum not unlike Christchurch.

When the Asians started arriving in number, it shook up the city and made it more fun, but now (as is always the case with Asians) it's too much shaking and the fun is now just blown out people requiring too much money to get seediness and despair.

[quote]San Francisco has never recovered from the City Hall murders, one wonders if maybe Moscone and Milk weren't in the way of someone's plans for the city.

Try looking at it this way, r17 -- Dan White didn't know why he wouldn't be allowed to regain his Supervisor's seat after he resigned until Dianne Feinstein told him that Milk and Muscone already had plans for that seat which, again, White gave up voluntarily.

After Milk and Muscone were dead and White was in jail, Dianne, who had been identified as one who'd reached the end of her career in politics, ascended into the Mayor's office, and later joined the Senate.

The death of California began with her and her Chamber of Commerce friends now in control of the state. You like Dreamers? Thank Dianne. You like Russians? Thank Dianne. You like the vibrant yellow of Silicon Valley?

Thank Dianne.

Vancouver in the 80's was a very different city than it is now.

It used to be a diverse city, but it was still affordable, and it was very vibrant. Granville Island, Robson Street, and Gastown were all brimming with shops, restaurants and activity.

As people here mentioned, the 1997 transfer of Hong Kong to China resulted in a massive influx of Chinese to the city, which tipped the population balance. It became heavily Chinese influenced, whereas before, it was a pretty even mix of people.

And of course, the skyrocketing real estate prices due to speculation, just absoutely ruined the city as it has all over the US West Coast.

I still remember Vancouver when it was at its peak, and so I have an affinity for that city. Not sure what it's like now, but it sounds horrible.

by Anonymousreply 111May 29, 2016 6:59 PM

Honestly, this thread is fascinating (and a bit scary). Thank you guys!

by Anonymousreply 112May 29, 2016 7:12 PM

The racism in this thread is pretty crazy. I've been on DataLounge for 15 or more years, but I usually avoid any thread that's even peripherally about race because I know what I'll find there -- I'd rather spend my time here reading about caftans and Lisa Whelchel than about how much a bunch of racists hate Chinese people.

I live in Vancouver. It has its problems (large homeless population, lot of mentally ill and drug-addicted people who are not getting help) but it is still a very safe and livable city. Yes, the housing prices are ridiculous. I'll probably never own my own place, here, and that sucks. But overall, it's a pretty easy, pleasant place to live.

To call it "pleasant" is probably damning it with faint praise, and both perspectives are true. Pleasant is not interesting. The arts community is minuscule. It truly is "no fun city". But for Canada, it's got the best climate you'll find. The area is beautiful. Most of the city is very clean. It's a pretty even-keeled place.

I like that there are people from all over the planet who live here. It's not always easy for everyone to co-exist, but the multiculturalism is probably the most interesting thing about the city. Without the variety of cultures, it would be a pretty dull place.

by Anonymousreply 113May 29, 2016 10:45 PM

The average single family home in Metro Vancouver costs $1.4 million (CAN), but prospective buyers are willing to pay upwards of $700k more than asking price to win their bid. Roughly 80% of these home buyers are Chinese, leaving the rest of the homebuyers to settle for condos or move further east into Coquitlam and the woods of Maple Ridge and beyond.

by Anonymousreply 140May 30, 2016 4:33 AM

No you misunderstand R139 -- before Reagan came along and destroyed the safety net there were government funds available to subsidize SROs -- single room occupancy buildings. They were very inexpensive rooms -- yes they were often seedy but they were someplace a mentally ill person or someone else on the fringes of society could afford on a minimum wage salary.

In the 80s I worked in the old McGraw Hill Building on 42nd and Eighth. Across the street was an SRO and a lot of the menial jobs were filled by people who lived there.

Then Reagan's cabal decided to cut the federal subsidies for SROs, instead giving a smaller amount directly to the states to spend. The states of course had zero interest in continuing the SRO subsidies, as the reaganites well knew.

The building owners were no longer getting their subsidies, so they kicked their SRO tenants out and sold their buildings. Luxury housing for yuppie douchebags went up instead. Unable to afford anything but an SRO room, many of these poor/mentally ill people went out on the streets and so couldn't hold a job any longer. One by one the workers at my company fell away and we never saw or heard from them again. Years later I heard that one of them, a girl we all liked named Belinda, had died of AIDS in 1988.

To the Québec haters at R18, R19 and R20, has it ever occurred to you that Québec is paranoid about losing its culture because Canada doesn't have one? If you live in one of the most boring, bland countries in the world, you'll fight to the death for the little bit of culture you have. The Anglos have sold the country to third world immigrants and now they're complaining about it but calling Québec racist. It makes no sense. And even with all the problems in Montréal, it's still the most interesting Canadian city which says a lot about what a crappy country Canada is.

by Anonymousreply 148May 30, 2016 10:35 AM

[quote]has it ever occurred to you that Québec is paranoid about losing its culture because Canada doesn't have one?

I visited Quebec and found it charming. The rest of Canada not so much. Also: I don't speak French, but people were helpful and friendly.

by Anonymousreply 149May 30, 2016 11:16 AM

Apparently Vancouver USED to be the greatest place on Earth. They got too much publicity and all the wrong people moved there. Crime spiked. Charm left. That's OK because the city sits on a huge earthquake fault that could go any time now, so you definitely don't want to go there. Go to Seattle or Portland instead,

by Anonymousreply 150May 30, 2016 11:27 AM

Nothing will make you appreciate Montreal than living for years in the rest of Canada.

by Anonymousreply 151May 30, 2016 12:15 PM

Montreal is basically Boston with better drinking culture. From the surface charming but dig deeper and among the worst collection of parochial nasty people on the continent.

by Anonymousreply 152May 30, 2016 12:44 PM

R152 Montreal is one of the worst cities around. 100% corruption in all three levels of government. Their racist language laws have chased out most of the anglos straight out of the province. I visited for a week and have zero interest in ever going back. Every aspect of life in the city and province and country is soooooooooo bad and entirely corrupt.

by Anonymousreply 153May 30, 2016 12:50 PM

Vancouverite @ R153 lol

Anglos are not a race, therefore language laws cannot be racist you silly twat.

Secondly, more and more Anglos are moving to Québec. I guess they're tired of boring Vancouver and Toronto and all the ugly people (especially women) who possess no fashion sense whatsoever.

by Anonymousreply 154May 30, 2016 2:10 PM

I think Vancouver is fucking gorgeous! What San Francisco ought to look like. And I haven't seen any posts about Wreck Beach. why are gorgeous young Canadian men so less modest than their US counterparts? I remember one trip to Wreck back in the early 90's on a Sunday afternoon with five of the most gorgeous men I've ever seen spending a nude afternoon. Playing volleyball, etc. No, Vancover is tops. Except for the rain. The old restaurant, the Cannery, did close - it was one of my favorites.

by Anonymousreply 155May 30, 2016 2:18 PM

I was in Vancouver yesterday - went up to eat some delicious Chinese food. Vancouver definitely wins in that respect. However, other than Asian and West Indian cuisine, the food culture sucks. I do love the natural beauty of the city but I do have to say it does have an odd lack of culture/identity.

Every time I think it will be different, I find myself becoming supremely bored about halfway through my visit. In comparing to other cities in the PNW, not nearly as fun or interesting as Portland, Seattle or Victoria. There are many reasons why so many Vancouverites spend so much time down south on the weekends (besides the cheap shopping).

R163, there is enormous variety in restaurants and food shopping. You need to know where to go because its often most concentrated in neighborhoods. If you want East Indian food go to south Fraser, for Greek its west Broadway, The Italians and Carribean Islands share North Commercial Drive. The Chinese own Richmond and Chinatown in Downtown, If you go on Denman St there are a dozen different ethnicities represented every block including a plethora of Korean Ramen Noodle shops, English Pubs with Fish and Chips, African, Indonesian, Monglian, Afghan, Mexican, Sushi Bars and on and on. West Robson St Has a lot of Korean and Japanese restaurants.

Superior intelligence?! LMAO. You don't get out much, do you? They're all a bunch of liars and thieves. All those "immigrants"? They're fucking industrial spies, for the most part. Chinese people haven't been innovators for a thousand years. They steal all their technology now.

Chinese immigration is a long term plan by the Chinese government to populate and take over the world. Instead of going to war and doing it the hard way, the Chinese are doing it slowly but surely through immigration. They want the rest of us off this planet. by Anonymousreply 207August 16, 2016 7:52 AM

I'm with you r206 god knows we've got our own problems in Canada, but the states seems really in a downward spiral, and has been for some time now.

by Anonymousreply 208August 16, 2016 7:58 AM

Diversity has been around since America's inception. People only hate diversity when economy is stagnating and jobs are scarce but when things are fine then it is less of an issue. The US has been downward spiraling since 2004, but everything as acclerated cause of the deep political divides within the country. The US is not only going through a political clash but also a cultural/generational clash. You have older generations who want to hold on to their power, deep down they want to hold on to the power cause they know that their generation screwed up the system for the young people. Then you have the younger generation, who want the country to be more European/Canadian liberal.

The Chinese people that I have personally met and interact with regularly (my sil and her family) are extremely racist toward whites and especially blacks. They are arrogant ugly bigoted people and I have to hold my tongue at family functions. They also seem to think Vancouver is the greatest place next to Hong Kong, but love the fact that they can stay in the US for months at a time (but bash it) because my sil "married a blue-eyed white American."

The sil came to the US for free graduate school, but originally moved from Hong Kong to Vancouver as a kid.

by Anonymousreply 210August 16, 2016 8:38 AM

R210. Based on your comments, I'm going to assume you are white. If your SIL is Chinese, then she married your brother who is white. Seemed odd that you say she is racist given that she married a white guy who is your brother. This makes no sense. Perhaps you are the racist and don't like the fact that your brother married an Asian. You did refer to Chinese as arrogant and ugly which sort of makes YOU out to be the real racist. Just an observation.

by Anonymousreply 211August 16, 2016 9:14 AM

No, her family is properly depicted in my post at r210.

The mother wanted a blue-eyed great-grandchild in the future...those are her words not mine. My sil is the closet lesbian with a tiger mom and my brother a bi/closet case who wanted kids.

I am an outsider listening in...my family is liberal, white, accepting...they are rude cunts and I really don't care if you believe me or not. Clannish, rude...they seem like the adult equivalent of teens at that age where they hate themselves and try to project it onto others. It is an ugly energy. And, as I stated, it is the extended family/friends of one Vancouver Chinese family, so it may not be everyone. Maybe the mother is the Archie Bunker of Hong Kong/Vancouver.

by Anonymousreply 212August 16, 2016 9:32 AM

I loved Vancouver. Yes, it's expensive but if you can't afford to be there you just shouldn't be there. Loved the food, scenery, and people.

by Anonymousreply 213August 16, 2016 10:06 AM

lol Hong Kongers would be so pissed that you gays call them "Chinese". They think they are so much better than the Chinese and call Chinese people "locusts".

by Anonymousreply 214August 16, 2016 11:06 AM

It's boring and crass.

by Anonymousreply 215August 16, 2016 11:09 AM

R189 has a pretty accurate description.

by Anonymousreply 216August 16, 2016 11:14 AM

Canadian here. Visited Vancouver to attend a convention. Visually very attractive but I felt caged in due to the density of high rises in the downtown core. It felt sterile, cold and empty. This was back in 1995. I've never been back and have no plans to ever visit again.

by Anonymousreply 217August 16, 2016 12:34 PM

Lots of Chinese on welfare. It's usually the Anglos who are too proud to take advantage of government assistance. Other people see it as free money.

by Anonymousreply 218August 16, 2016 1:24 PM

I think Vancouver is mean to the homeless because otherwise all the homeless in the whole country would end up there.

by Anonymousreply 219August 16, 2016 1:55 PM

Anyway it's a little schizo because they feel a need to out-flake the bourgie hells of Seattle and Portland on the one hand, which may not be possible and should certainly not be attempted; and out-entrepreneur California on the other. The result is an excessive amount of fake Positive Mental Attitude. that just sucks the life out of a room. If you can get past that, they are very down to earth and real, as well as healthy and sexy.

My sister lived there in the1980's. She said it changed so much once Hong Kong money started flowing in. She said it became "self important". She ended up moving to Toronto.

by Anonymousreply 221August 16, 2016 2:16 PM

The presence of Asians lowers the standard of living faster and more drastically than any homeless drug addicts.

by Anonymousreply 222August 16, 2016 7:54 PM

R222 Seattle also has 100s of thousands of Chinese citizens in their area too. I wonder how they feel about being usurped.

by Anonymousreply 223August 17, 2016 9:36 PM

The racism on this thread is pretty bad, even for DL.

I just visited Vancouver for the first time, this weekend. My impressions, for what they're worth:

Good: Some great restaurants, some world class condos with giant windows so you can see the decor on display, beautiful walks along the coast, Stanley Park is beautiful, some quaint little old neighborhoods fun for strolling around, great public transit system, lots of places to get food very late at night, pretty clean in most places, waiters have no issues splitting checks, Granville Island was a lot of fun, with the shops and really great food prepared right there for you, really fantastic fish and chips and oysters in even the diviest of pubs, proximity to nature, availability of any kind of Asian cuisine you want, pretty much at any time, definitely very gay positive, fantastic bakeries.

Bad: Bartenders are religious about pouring the exact amount of shot in your drink, waiters and bartenders don't like to make small talk, people do not have a great sense of humor, there is an insane amount of drunken douchery at night (people parking their expensive cars on the sidewalk, pink limos everywhere, douches wandering around trying to charm drunk bitches - and yes, these awful people were mostly WHITE or EURO, not Asian), some really shitty restaurants (you get what you pay for), tons of cocaine, uptight vibe in a lot of places, flakiness and unreliability in people, shitty drivers, aggressive drivers, gay bars are loaded with straight people, and tons of straight chicks having girls night out, sake tasting was a mistake (yuck), people in the film industry there are more insufferable than LA, with all the ridiculous name dropping and coke talk, and yes, lots of sketchy looking drugged out people (only about half as bad as SF, but SF is a bigger city anyhow...).

by Anonymousreply 224September 19, 2016 8:46 AM

LOL at this thread. Used to live in Vancouver in the 70s and 80s and these comments are bringing back the whole experience of the city. That judgemental map is exactly as I remember Vancouver 30 years ago!

by Anonymousreply 225September 19, 2016 9:59 AM

Hurry up and buy

by Anonymousreply 226February 8, 2017 7:11 AM

Oh boy. Oy goy.

by Anonymousreply 227February 8, 2017 7:16 AM

And Toronto is so full of meek, self-effacing and social people. Okayyyyyyy.

Vancouver is full of douchebags from all over Canada but especially the prairies who want to party and have a good time. It's the only place in Canada that isn't intolerably cold. I wish all the assholes from the prairies would just stay there we don't want them.

by Anonymousreply 229February 8, 2017 7:51 AM

R229 Touché.

by Anonymousreply 230March 7, 2018 8:19 PM

OP, you may quote me: Seattle is a "Third Tier Shithole of a Hamlet."

by Anonymousreply 231March 7, 2018 10:26 PM

Clearly you have been there. Well said.

by Anonymousreply 232March 7, 2018 10:54 PM

In 2018 many neighborhoods in Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond, and Coquitlam are 95% Chinese citizens. Nary a white person to be found.

by Anonymousreply 233April 4, 2018 1:00 PM

In the Midwest, there are lots more Asian, Indian and Middle Eastern students coming to the US for higher education. It's so competitive and expensive and they've got seats to fill, administrators to pay very well, and adjuncts to screw over!

by Anonymousreply 234April 4, 2018 1:14 PM

Welcome to the future, OP.

by Anonymousreply 235April 4, 2018 1:27 PM

Hey R214 that's what I call them too! How funny!

by Anonymousreply 236April 4, 2018 1:28 PM

How's the Trump Hotel there? Is it still Trump-branded?

by Anonymousreply 237April 4, 2018 2:07 PM

I was in Vancouver last week for the first time. Compared to Seattle, the homeless population must be hidden. In Seattle, they're visible and unavoidable. In Vancouver, I only saw two the whole time I was there. In general, I found Vancouver beautiful and clean. There were a lot of tacky people shopping. The food and transit were great.

r237, for some reason a taxi driver (middle-Eastern) drove us right by the Trump hotel (still Trump-branded) and asked what we thought of it. I said, "Even here we can't get away from him!" The driver said that lots of tourists ask to see it.

by Anonymousreply 238April 4, 2018 2:53 PM

Wanting to see a Trump sign encapsulates why that city sucks monkey balls.

by Anonymousreply 239April 7, 2018 3:25 PM

R239 What do tourists have to do with a city?

by Anonymousreply 240April 7, 2018 3:29 PM

Still better than Trump's America.

by Anonymousreply 241April 7, 2018 5:05 PM

R241 Nope.

by Anonymousreply 242April 8, 2018 7:01 PM

I love all the Canadian cock at nude Wreck Beach in Vancouver.

by Anonymousreply 243April 8, 2018 7:31 PM

True dat.

by Anonymousreply 244April 28, 2018 8:13 AM

Richmond anywhere will have lots of chinese. coz it sounds like "rich man"

by Anonymousreply 245April 28, 2018 8:52 AM

R243 Wreck Beach has been mentioned 3 times in this thread.

I went to Google Images and the sand there is a grubby grey colour.

by Anonymousreply 246April 28, 2018 9:24 AM

Look at it in context. Vancouver is mega sophisticated if you’re from rural BC, Edmonton or Calgary, or anywhere in the prairie provinces really.

by Anonymousreply 247April 28, 2018 10:08 AM

If it wasn’t for Vancouver and Toronto, where would B-listers shoot TV movies?
