Though Jane was always a very highly respected stage actress, she was never considered a movie star. And even on stage, she often played brittle cold women....hardly the type that would interest Hollywood in the 1970s.

Looking at the young Streep, I have to say that Streep has aged very, very well.

Poor Jane never got to make such cinematic masterpieces like Mamma Mia, The Iron Lady, Julie and Julia and Ricki and the Flash.

Can't wait until its thirty time Oscar nominee Meryl Streep. With seven or eight of them being for movies that have actually held up.

At least all my nominated movies are still shown on a regular basis.

One of Jane's greatest performances--don't laugh--was as Robert Duvall's neglected wife in The Betsy with Laurence Olivier, Katharine Ross, and Tommy Lee Jones.

That really is the saddest story. Alexander's wife is a long-time NYC actress and has many acquaintances and friends in the biz, and is very well liked. That must have been tragic for her family.

I think Jane gave a tag line blurb to that new Streep biographer so she clearly has given up the jealousy tirade (and she probably fed him all kinds of stories about Streep and Hoffman, etc.)

I just finished watching Franklin and Eleanor(1976) on youtube. It's a tv movie about the Roosevelt's. I thought Jane Alexander was excellent as Eleanor Roosevelt.

And yet when Ken Burns made his brilliant documentary on the Roosevelt family, Meryl Streep was the voice of Eleanor.

Jane Alexander was a great stage actress--but stage actresses often were not great movie actresses.

Jessica Tandy and Helen Hayes still managed to snag Oscars, nonetheless. But Julie Harris never did any more than Jane did.

Jane's Tony and 2 Emmys are for supporting roles. I guess she was miffed Meryl swept the Kramer right from under her.

Ken Burns always seemed a bit transgender to me. He should call his production company Bearded Lady Productions.

I used to wait on Jane Alexander around this time when I worked at Ernie's on the Upper West Side. She was a cunt and would follow demands with "Do you know who I am?" Now I would answer, "The old forgotten actress whose son likes child pornography?"

I remember reading that Jane was jealous that Dusty harassed Meryl and not her because she wasn't as big of a star.
