From 1981 - Jane Alexander SLAMS Meryl Streep Admits Jealousy!
From 1981 – Older actress jealous of the younger actress,
Asked if she is jealous of Meryl Streep, Jane Alexander tells the Boston Globe YES
Jane seemed particularly incensed by the fact that Meryl’s picture is on the cover of Time Magazine in connection with the cover of "The French Lieutenant’s Woman." Jane called it "a fluke. That cover is a combination of politics and luck. It’s media machinery set into motion. And it fills a need. The public wants its heroines, needs heroines. It’s America’s equivalent to royalty. I’ve never part of that. Yes I regret it.."
Meryl Streep response?
"Look, I don’t know why that happened. I didn’t call up Time magazine and say "Look, I’ll give you $500 if you put me on your cover." There’s nothing I can do about it. It does make things difficult with my friends, even though they try – my real friends – try hard not to have it make a difference. But of course it does. Acting is this country is a lot like a sporting event. There’s a lot of competition, all of these award ceremonies – this is the best, this is the second best, this is the third best. This is the best this, this is the best that. This is the winner, this is the loser. I’m on the cover of Time, so Jane Alexander feels like a loser and I have to feel like I should feel like a winner? I didn’t win at Wimbledon; I made a movie!"

Jane Alexander should have won an Oscar for Testament. That was a truly haunting, historic performance.

They haven't spoken in 30 years since Jane made that dig to Meryl.

Jane wasn't that much older than Meryl at the time and was known only for the Great White Hope.

R6 What garbage. Jane was a well known actress at the time this interview was given. In fact, she had just won an Emmy for Playing for Time alongside Vanessa Redgrave which had drawn huge ratings.
And hasn't someone posted here before that Meryl got a PR agent right after she graduated from college to circulate the "greatest actress" tagline to the media?

Funny how Meryl wasn't asked to be director of the National Endowment for the Arts.

I think Lyme disease has affected Jane's brain. This is such petty stupidity.

Though Jane was always a very highly respected stage actress, she was never considered a movie star. And even on stage, she often played brittle cold women....hardly the type that would interest Hollywood in the 1970s.

Looking at the young Streep, I have to say that Streep has aged very, very well.

Poor Jane never got to make such cinematic masterpieces like Mamma Mia, The Iron Lady, Julie and Julia and Ricki and the Flash.
Can't wait until its thirty time Oscar nominee Meryl Streep. With seven or eight of them being for movies that have actually held up.
At least all my nominated movies are still shown on a regular basis.

Oh, Kate, no one except elderly queens know who the fuck you are anymore. That's how Hollywood is. Meryl will be the same way.

I've waited on both Jane Alexander and Meryl Streep numerous times over the years. Meryl is Meryl, and Jane is a cunt.

Was Jane really gunning for Meryl, or was she just responding honestly when asked, "...that's gotta chap your hide, right?"
Of course I'm jealous...

One of Jane's greatest performances--don't laugh--was as Robert Duvall's neglected wife in The Betsy with Laurence Olivier, Katharine Ross, and Tommy Lee Jones.

That really is the saddest story. Alexander's wife is a long-time NYC actress and has many acquaintances and friends in the biz, and is very well liked. That must have been tragic for her family.

I think Jane gave a tag line blurb to that new Streep biographer so she clearly has given up the jealousy tirade (and she probably fed him all kinds of stories about Streep and Hoffman, etc.)

Meryl is the Whitney Houston of actresses. Great talent but when she dies there won’t be a truly great song to play.

I just finished watching Franklin and Eleanor(1976) on youtube. It's a tv movie about the Roosevelt's. I thought Jane Alexander was excellent as Eleanor Roosevelt.

And yet when Ken Burns made his brilliant documentary on the Roosevelt family, Meryl Streep was the voice of Eleanor.

Jane Alexander was a great stage actress--but stage actresses often were not great movie actresses.
Jessica Tandy and Helen Hayes still managed to snag Oscars, nonetheless. But Julie Harris never did any more than Jane did.

Jane's Tony and 2 Emmys are for supporting roles. I guess she was miffed Meryl swept the Kramer right from under her.

Ken Burns always seemed a bit transgender to me. He should call his production company Bearded Lady Productions.

I used to wait on Jane Alexander around this time when I worked at Ernie's on the Upper West Side. She was a cunt and would follow demands with "Do you know who I am?" Now I would answer, "The old forgotten actress whose son likes child pornography?"
The worst kind of cooze.

I remember Jane and Meryl appeared together on "Donahue" to promote "Kramer", and before long were throwing punches at each other. Phil valiantly tried to intervene, then Jane kicked him in the nuts and said, "Maybe this shit will get me on the cover of Time magazine."

Meryl used an anti-gay anti-woman slur to defame a man who died more than 50 years ago. She’s disqualified.
