If they look like this they can be as mean spirited as they want OP
by Anonymous | reply 2 | May 13, 2016 1:12 AM |
Care to provide evidence OP? I mean anybody can just belch out the trash talk.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | May 13, 2016 1:12 AM |
Yes, and they've got those nasty un-cut dicks and aren't particularly attractive, r2.

Curse those Canadians OP. How dare they be so nice, eh?
by Anonymous | reply 5 | May 13, 2016 2:20 AM |
Yes, and I also hate their stupid accents and their "ehs". Never met a Canadian I liked.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | May 13, 2016 2:23 AM |
They're all so damn friendly and good-looking. Sometimes hard to spot the gay ones. Apologize too much.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | May 13, 2016 2:28 AM |
Are you really Canadian OP?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | May 13, 2016 2:29 AM |
If they seem mean-spirited, it's because they heard that someone smuggled a bottle of Tabasco sauce across the border and they just can't take the thought of all that spiciness and flavor. It vexes them.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | May 13, 2016 2:32 AM |
Don't know do not care,
by Anonymous | reply 10 | May 13, 2016 2:35 AM |
OP - it's my believe that if the USA was a person, they'd be diagnosed as a sociopath. And having a grandiose, and yet, undeserved, sense of self worth is one of the traits. No country has an inferiority complex towards you - that is why everyone mocks/detests you. Bullies with big egos, thus, you deserve your upcoming president, it suits you.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | May 13, 2016 2:45 AM |
Agree and I'm Canadian. Other than healhcare it's a bland lifeless country.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | May 13, 2016 2:50 AM |
And the country has basically been handed over to immigrants.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | May 13, 2016 2:51 AM |
Canadians = People who have a longer life expectancy than Americans. People who don't have to sell a kidney or their first born child to receive health care. People who don't need guns to feel safe.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | May 13, 2016 2:57 AM |
Home of hockey and hot men. I love Canadians.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | May 13, 2016 3:05 AM |
Canadians are not nice, and they don't apologize because in my lifetime they have never admitted they were wrong about anything, even though they are even more stupid and mistake-prone than Americans, on average. They also like to think of themselves as "tough" and "streetwise" and have problem with toxic masculinity (hence the abuse and murder of native prostitutes). They are not in general smart, their education system is the only one in the G8 that is even worse than the USA's, and their politicians are student council level. It is merely luck that they have a more progressive government than our own at this point in history. If Rob Ford had lived he could easily have become PM. For most of the last couple hundred years their governments have been more conservative and ridiculous than ours, causing widespread misery and starvation during the Depression to cite just one example. Their infrastructure is minimal, and they have done a piss poor job of managing the Arctic. They are way more racist than they think, and their history with Native Americans is just as bad as ours, including biological warfare. They are also stuck with an even worse kind of Puritanism, the Scottish kind. Alcohol is allowed but FUN is verboten and "social life" means constant dick comparisons and one-upmanship conversations. They typically cannot carry on a conversation for an hour unless they are an immigrant or on drugs.
That said, they have many fine qualities too. But these threads always involve unself-aware Canadians spewing stereotypes that were invented by Canadians who had never been anywhere else.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | May 13, 2016 3:14 AM |
Eh??
by Anonymous | reply 17 | May 13, 2016 3:16 AM |
I'm Canadian and r16 is 100% correct.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | May 13, 2016 3:25 AM |
R16 - The one accusation that you make, that Canadians are very provincial, and have never been anywhere else, doesn't jive with the statistics that as of 2013, 70% of Canadians carried a passport. Having a passport would usually indicate that it is used to cross borders. Compare that to only 36% of USAmericans that have a passport, and tell me again, who is 'provincial'.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | May 13, 2016 3:26 AM |
They had passports so they could come to the US for better healthcare, r19.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | May 13, 2016 3:29 AM |
R20 - I can't be bothered to refute that ridiculous comment. . .

by Anonymous | reply 26 | May 13, 2016 4:11 AM |
Most Canadians don't go anywhere but the U.S. and Cancun.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | May 13, 2016 4:33 AM |
R27 - Still better than the majority of USAmericans, who have never been outside of the state they were born in.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | May 13, 2016 4:37 AM |
Granted that's double the Americans visiting Canada, but more Americans do go to Europe than Canadians, if less in proportion. And Americans are crawling all over Mexico, same as Canadians here.
Anyway, the point is not that Americans are better than Canadians. The point is that the Canadian self-image of nice and apologetic has no basis in actual experience.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | May 13, 2016 4:41 AM |
Basically Pierre Trudeau boosted their self-esteem to the stratosphere and they are still living off his brain. Unfortunately, the only time we got a real intellectual, it was a creepy southern ideologue who was wrong about a lot of things and stubborn as an old mule, namely Woodrow Wilson.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | May 13, 2016 4:50 AM |
That said, our belief in our own virtue in foreign affairs is still based on him, despite being a hundred years out of date.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | May 13, 2016 4:52 AM |
R29 - To have a better, unbiased view, it needs to come from someone that isn't Canadian or USAmerican, and has had numerous dealings with both cultures. Anyone care to give their 'foreign' opinion?
by Anonymous | reply 32 | May 13, 2016 4:54 AM |
Tons of Americans go to Mexico, I mean tons. Cruises to Mexico are like air to middle class Americans, and to go on a cruise some countries don't require Americans to carry a passport, it has to do with the ship being on a closed loop, as long as the ship leaves and returns from the same American port you aren't required to carry a passport, at least that happened when I went to the Bahamas. I'd hardly call it being well traveled, but Americans do get out every once and a while.

by Anonymous | reply 50 | May 15, 2016 8:22 AM |
This is a very famous Canadian donut chain called "Coffee Time Donuts". They're literally everywhere you go in Canada and they're an iconic name in Canadian Culture. It was started in the 1980's by a famous Canadian hockey player named Paul Coffee. He played for the Edmonton Oilers and the Pittsburgh Penguins and won many Stanley Cups with both teams.
The line ups are long, but it's totally worth it because the coffee is amazing and the donuts are wonderful, but the best thing on the menu is the sandwiches. Try the chicken salad, you won't regret it.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | May 15, 2016 9:44 AM |
R51 Country Style Donuts is amazing too. I usually get a dozen of the Maple Bacon donuts to bring to work for me and my co-workers, because everyone loves them! It's the thing that Canadians miss the most when were out of our beloved country.

I've been to Canada, a beautiful country and good place to live but not much to do if you compare it to the US. Canada is great mainly for minorities who want to avoid the craziness and racism of the US. Toronto is very multi-cultural friendly and Montreal is very gay friendly, go to Crescent Street if you go to Montreal.

We only leave a generous gratuity when the service consists of more than a grunted acknowledgement of our dinner order, and an exasperated sigh eyeroll as you lumber away when we ask if we can have a bottle of Frenchs Ketch-up with our Eggs Benedict, and extra an extra shot of Clamato with our Bloody Caesars.
If you think you deserve a gigantic tip for serving us that Heinz crap with a side of your ghetto attitude , your as loonie as the tip you'll find hidden under the plate when we leave.
Besides Canadian minimum wage is $38 per hour with free healthcare , 6 months paid Maternity/3 Months Paid Paternity , Free Daycare, and every Boxing Day, Family Day, August Long Weekend, Labour Day, Victoria Day ,Remembrance Day , Thanksgiving Day Weekend in October, and Celine Dion's Birthday holidays are all paid at time and a half, our servers earn more than your teachers .
by Anonymous | reply 56 | May 15, 2016 9:04 PM |
R55 - Servers in Canada earn a minimum wage of at least around $9-10 an hour. Not $2, like in your 'advanced' country. R56 is engaging in hyperbole, but making a good point.
Plus, why is it the responsibility of the customer to subsidize the wages of the employee? Wages are a matter between the employer and the employee - the fact that your servers must grovel for a living wage is despicable. The tipping culture only benefits the owners of restaurants.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | May 15, 2016 9:08 PM |
R57: admission of guilt. If you can't - or won't - tip, eat at home, hick
by Anonymous | reply 58 | May 15, 2016 9:09 PM |
R58 - I live in a country that adds a 10% service charge to the bill, or eat at mom and pop places where there is no tipping. Rarely, does anyone leave more, or tip at all - as it should be. Servers earn an equivalent wage to any other worker. I don't need to heed your self serving 'advice'. You're like the assholes, when anyone criticizes 'America', you instantly spout out - 'If you don't like it here, you can move'. Instead of trying to fix problems, you engage in simplistic nonsense. The tipping culture of the USA is absurd. . . What's your motive for maintaining the status quo?
by Anonymous | reply 59 | May 15, 2016 9:23 PM |
Please R59, just stay in your home country. Problem solved.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | May 15, 2016 9:25 PM |
Servers in Canada have a lower minimum wage than regular min wage earners because tips are expected to supplement it.

Most of your most popular music, actors, movie directors are from Canada, Drake, Celine, Bieber James Cameron, hell even your next President could have very well a Canadian ! ( still could who knows )
True a lot of great television ( HBO , Nextflix ) come from the US , but the electricity to power your television, computers radios phones, comes almost entirely from Canadian hydro electric dams. we can turn off the electricity anytime we want by flipping a switch, destroy your economy , and you wouldn't have a clue who did it . ( we've tried a few times in the past just to test the system and see how long it took to descend into madness down there , btw 3 days is it, after 3 days , with no power, you'll resort to savagery and start shooting each other over the last bag of Cheetos at Walmart.. , so show some respect or we could will flick the switch and you'll be living in the 1870's in the dark eating each other until we decide to turn it back on or maybe leave it off for a good long while to teach you a lesson, bitches.
Anyone in the red area of this map gets all their electricity from our dams, and those areas would go dark instantly if Canada cut the power the blue area is Quebec, the yellow area is the western grid which get a majority of its electricity from Canada approx 80% , it would fail as a cascade effect of power faqilures. The one place that does not fall under the Dominion of Canada is the goddamned Green area in Texas, but the way Texans feel about the rest of America, they'll likely cheers Canada on as we return the rest of the USA to the Dark Ages

R155 - Yes, I thought that might be a possibility but gambled on making an assumption about your citizenship. Regardless, you do come off as dismissing Canada as somehow inferior, so my comment still applies. Which country are you born in/live in? So I can judge and stereotype you.

Canadians are known as kind and down to earth, the complete opposite of obnoxious and cocky Americans. Canada also has beautiful scenery, from BC to NS and every province in between. I'd say overall Canada has a much better reputation here in Europe than the US, yet people are still WAY more obsessed with the US, and know more about the country. The US is a superpower after all, and well.. the US has been very important to Europe throughout history. We can't really deny that they helped us out fighting the nazis and even in the aftermath of WW2. But even so.. I think people in general like Canadians more. The stereotype of nice Canadians is true, of course there's exceptions (Bieber, Rob Ford, Harper etc), but most people find it hard to say anything bad about the country or the people.
by Anonymous | reply 159 | May 16, 2016 10:38 AM |
Canadians tend to value their privacy and personal space more than the US. Issues like abortion, gay marriage, equal right, how to finally exterminate the last of those goddamned Indians, bilingualism, religion, have all been done and settled a decade ago or more. We just legalized prostitution and assisted suicide, with barely a blip on the radar screen, can you imagine getting those laws passed i in the USA?
Canadians do not like to have some of our less stellar traits ( in the eyes of the rest of world anyways) when they bitch about our fur industry, the seal hunt, ourNative Indian Mandatory Sterilization Program, Attacking our dear neighbours on Sept 11 , and making it look like Arabs did it, hiding Hitler all these years, , Euthanasia Policies for the Feebleminded and unattractive, The Extinction of the Eskimos , creating Ted Cruz in a lab then unleashing him on you, Exporting and Promoting Asbestos to Third World Countries , Keeping all your runaway slaves and not about telling them that thing Lincoln did , Cheating like hell in the Winter Olympics, small little things like that, otherwise Canada is close to perfect as far as anyone outside of Canada can tell, and it better stay that way or we get really really mad.eh?

R142 is typical of the genre. I have been hassled by Canadian customs REPEATEDLY, whereas American customs has always been nice to me. In 1986 when I was on my way to Montreal, my boyfriend had an exercise wheel he brought with him, and they destroyed it trying to find drugs (which there weren't any and no they didn't have any dogs). They also hassled me because I brought up a couple bills to pay on my vacation and they thought that meant I would be "doing business" in Canada and therefore had the wrong visa. It was excruciating. Then in Cornwall in 2002 when I was on my way to Toronto gay pride they took me in a room and interviewed me for like an HOUR on everything and every person I knew in Canada. Certainly the worst customs experiences I've ever had. Frankly, I think they did it in both cases because they were bored. As for the "nice" examples provided in the article, they are commonplace courtesies that you would expect from any American middle class person. His claim that there is something "passive aggressive" about Americans saying "Have a Nice Day" is revealing his own bias, not theirs.

At the time, Harper was Prime Minister, and the CRAP (Conservative Reform Alliance Party) was the majority. The article is centred on the evangelicals within Canadian politics. r197, You're spot on there. With lack of easy access to handguns, Canadian serial killers have to get creative, and sometimes the results are SPECTACULAR !
Murder by guns is not unheard of up here, we just call them "hunting accidents", and rifles are easily obtainable from most big store like Canadian Tire, Home Hardware, even Walmart. The great advantage over handguns is the accuracy from a distance and being able to shoot your intended victims from a greater distance, and then having the RCMP conclude it was a "tragic hunting accident" . For some strange reason the majority of these "accidents" always seem to happen during the first week of hunting season.
It is hard to find a stylish handbag big enough to conceal a hunting rifle though.

R2124, Yes Harper was PM for a while, but unlike the "Canada-Turning-Fascist-Troll" on here would have you all believe, Haper did not reverse laws on abortion, or gay marriage, or any other leftist issues. Being right wing in Canada is equal to being FDR at the height of the New Deal era in the USA. Harper was a control freak who ruled his own party with an iron-fist, but on the other hand he was a university educated economist whose steady fiscally conservation policies kept Canada out of the last major meltdown that hit the world in 2008 . Hopefully our hunky new drama teacher turned PM can maintain Canada's past record of slow and steady economic policy, which he seems to be doing a good job of so far.

We think of it as "creating a sustainable future for our planet"....and we mean OUR fucking planet, the rest of you just die off, eh?
Baby Seal Clubbing still extremely popular pastime too, Canada has no plans to end our love affair with the luxurious feel of fur so quit your bitchin' it's not like we still execute criminals, exterminated most of the Indians, or sterilized the retards up here.

Trust me when I say most Canadians look on in utter disgust at what the USA has become and that is a land of freakshows where reality television stars as seen as royalty with one in particular about to become the next POTUS.. Canada in general does not tolerate insane public figures making racist, sexist, homophobic statements while under the guise of "free speech" like the USA does on a daily basis with their politicians, religious leaders, talk show and radio hosts spewing their venom. In Canada it is considered repugnant and in some instance qualifies under Canadian hate crime laws while in the USA it is considered freedom of speech.. That shows you one major difference between Canadians and Americans..
The things that Republican politicians say and do on a daily basis in the USA that attack minority groups and gays for instance would have them thrown out of public office in Canada by voters if a politician tried that same bullshit.. Harper's attempts on imitating the Republican stance on Muslims was one reason Canadians voters threw his government out of office and why Justin Trudeau's Liberal party now has a majority.. No Canadians do not envy Americans at all and many are thankful they don't have out of control gun violence with the NRA owning politicians, health care costs that force people into bankruptcy and most Canadians would agree on one thing if you asked them if they would you want a Donald Trump to run for PM of Canada.. Fuck No!

Yeah yeah eah, this time last year Trump was announcing his candidacy and you all laughed and told us he wouldn't even make it out of New Hampshire, so you'll pardon our disbelief on any further political predictions. Trump is actually quite popular here in Toronto, he opened a very nice hotel downtown, and he does a lot of good, maybe it's time for a leader who is not part of the Political elites running America. Actually R271 the Trump International Hotel is a great hotel, perfect downtown location and it is consistently ranked in the Top 5 Hotels in Toronto, according to Tripadvisor. So just to set the record straight if anyone is planning a trip to Toronto here some true info ...
The 4 Seasons is currently # 1 ( the location is not downtown, but in Yorkville which is currently just a mass of condo construction all around the hotel, so I would not recommend it for at least another year until the condos are finished...which in Toronto seems to be never ending.
#2 is the Hotel le Germain Maple Leaf Square , right beside the Air Canada Centre within walking distance to the Rogers Centre , but also right beside an expressway in another part of downtown that has been nothing but condo sites past few years, but the rooms are very soundproofed, and it great for staying in town for a Bluejays or Raptor game, all easy walking distance, also serves a free breakfast for guests ( unusual for this city )
# 3 Ritz Carlton, one of the newer downtown hotels , I have not stayed there yet personally, but it's the Ritz so expect the best, it's a block away from Trump Hotel ( all these hotels are with walking distance. btw)
#4 is the Trump International Hotel and Tower, caters to business with very high end perks and services, is one of the only 5 star "pet friendly" hotels in Toronto. I went to the grand opening of the hotel and actually shook hands with Mr Trump ( so did about 3000 other guests and media, but he was very gracious, pleasant, stayed quite a while at the reception and actually he looks a lot better in person, but he also wasn't spray tanned the color of burnt sienna at the time either.
I work in the travel industry so when you say "nobody stays at Trump Hotel in Toronto" I just felt the need to let people know you have no clue what your talking about and if you are Canadian you must be from some high class place like Moose Jaw or Dildo , eh?

R321 As a Canadian , I can assure our dear neighbours to the south, that anything reported on the CBC, a tax-funded state broadcaster , can be dismissed as pure jingoistic propaganda, that article is typical of a very small smug percentage of Canadian and can only define who there are but stating who they are not. Trust me, 99% of Canadians despise these types of overly nationalistic displays of smug superiority, we love our neighbour to the south and are eternally grateful for your popular culture, movies, nuclear protection, and the mere fact that Canada still exists as an independent nation.

I wonder what would happen if it became common knowledge that "Canada" is actually a secret "reserved first class section" America's wealthy have kept preserved as a back up nation for the 1% if and or when the USA & UK goes beyond the point of no return in regards to it's quality of life?
The Anglo-American empire has set up a few of these safe havens around the world, others include Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Patagonia, as a refuge for the 1% if/when the shit truly hits the fan in the US or UK.

I will say again that Americans don't care about Canadians. To Americans, Canada is just a country that acts like America without the excitement and exoticism of being an American. Canadians do have an inferiority complex when it comes to America cause they are too close to American culture and technically America protects Canada. The US have the largest military in the world and any attack on Canada is an attack to America. NORAD is a United States and Canada bi-national organization charged with the missions of aerospace warning and aerospace control for North America. US military power helps protect Canada and it's aerospace so in reality we have a lot more in common then differences.

The jealousy here is unreal. Don't be jealous bitches just because Canada has universal healthcare and had gay marriage a decade before you did. Stop being so fucking smug, Canada is a far more livable country than the US. The smugness of Americans is why Americans are so universally hated. Here in Europe we just shake our heads that "the greatest country" in the world can allow their own citizens to go bankrupt if they're unfortubate enough to get sick. STOP pretending the US is the best country in the world, because it isn't,far from it. Here in Europe Canada has a much better reputation than the US, mostly because they have European values when it comes to universal healthcare etc. They don't abandon people in need the way the US does. Canadians come across as more intelligent, more down to earth and nicer. Americans come across as obnoxious, loud and smug. Many Americans are also quite dumb. The American education system is a joke.

Meanwhile, Chicago, derided by Canadians as a dirty old industrial city, has spent tens of BILLIONS of dollars on the largest water purification and sewage treatment system and the largest stormwater runoff reservoirs in the world on top of that. They also raised the streets and reversed the flow of the local rivers away from the lake. Indeed, Chicago has one plant that treats as much sewage per day as Toronto's whole system.

Canada’s Arctic is an abject clusterfuck of a place where Ottawa’s ineptitude blossoms into a turgid display of abject third-world horror. Abject poverty, critically-failed housing that sees 31% of Inuit living in unacceptably crowded conditions, an inhumane prison, rampant hunger, ridiculous costs of living, and wild revisionism reign.
by Anonymous | reply 381 | May 26, 2016 5:34 PM |
For a country that prides itself up and down on free healthcare Canada sure does a shit job of it. As of the day of writing Pond Inlet, Nunavut has a whooping cough outbreak that it can’t possibly contain with the resources they have on hand. Before that it was tuberculosis, a problem that has never really been gotten a handle on given that another TB outbreak came in 2014. Staff and facilities are in short supply and consequently some iffy people get promoted for want of anyone else while others are worked to dust. When ranked in terms of quality healthcare it’s no surprise that the Northern territories hang out together at the bottom of the pack.
What’s even more fun about the healthcare problems of the North is that they’re compounded by other shitty problems incumbent to Ottawa doing diddly-dicking nothing while the place burned. Remember that bit about poverty? It drills way deeper. For instance, here’s a piece about the North having shitty dental care. Guess what? That reflects elsewise in your overall health. When your food is nightmarishly expensive and you have to make your money last it makes (short-term) sense to eschew healthful food choices in favor of relatively cheaper junk food. Shockingly a diet of soda and sadness doesn’t lead to better health outcomes.
You know what else doesn’t lead to good health outcomes? Severe mental illness! And you know what doesn’t help that? Severe linguistic barriers that prevent proper diagnosis and care in hospitals! Or not getting needed medications! There isn’t a single part of the system that appears to be functioning. And while I won’t pretend that the North doesn’t present challenges it is a hardly acceptable for a country that claims public healthcare as a national virtue to offer an endless bevy of suffering instead. As in Nunavut’s life expectancy is 10 years lower than the rest of Canada’s.
Like terrible hospitals? It’s one thing to have a shitty dilapidated mess of a hospital like Halifax’s infamous Victoria General; it’s quite another to have a hospital staffed with four doctors. This is a vicious cycle – as doctors are overworked the need for replacement becomes more urgent and the difficulties in attracting talent grow as the job looks more and more like a baffling mess of confusing kleptocracy and enormous barriers in both professional and personal life.
Like Newfoundland, the North disappears from the caker conception of Canada unless a topical, convenient facsimile of the place can be deployed to make-believe Canada into a liveable place. Nunavut and its myriad problems are simply nowhere on the radar in Canada and because of that things quickly fall to shit. I wanted to showcase some examples of pathetic healthcare indicators in Canada because of how important healthcare is to the caker identity. Except when, y’know, you do a piss-poor job of it and return to ignoring the problem as per usual.

When you take the country and break it down into regions broadband connectivity and speed becomes even more obviously broken. Certain areas of the country have tolerable (not even good – tolerable) Internet connection speeds. The Canadian government’s standard of 5mbp up/1mbp down is ridiculously slow considering that the Europeans are calling for 30mbp access by 2020. But even that listless goal is not likely to happen in much of Canada. British Columbia has speeds lower than those found in Iraq, and it’s not even the worst. Even the best-off Canadian provinces don’t meet European standards:

Toronto is a nice exciting city but has no larger then life city feeling. Personally as someone who lives close to both Toronto and NYC. Toronto is just another city and Tornonto wants be like NYC but does not have the excitment, history or marketing of NYC. There Younge and Dundas Square is a poor imitation or wanting to be like NYC Times Square. New York sounds cooler and therefore easier to market and in reality NYC is it's own city. Montreal is it's own city that Canadians can be proud of it has the charm, history and great qualities which is why French Canadians see themselves as being different from English Canada. Inside Canada there is civil war between French Canada and English Canada, Justin Tredeau who is French Canadian saved bad stereotyping of Canadians with the Rob Ford mayor.

R394, you must be under the impression that bigger is always better. Not everyone wants to live in a world capital. If someone is very ambitious and wants to see if they can make it in theatre or movies or high finance, then they'll move to New York or L.A. and see how far they're career goes. But I wouldn't be surprised if even now many people want to live near where they grew up, assuming they didn't grow up in a very economically depressed area or they're not a gay person from a very conservative, small town. I like to visit New York but I wouldn't want to live there. If someone isn't making that much money, it must be a very stressful place to live. That's all right in your twenties but not so much after 40. I'm sure if you're a well educated professional and make very good money, New York is a good place to live.
Actually there's not a huge number of American cities with really upscale stores. The usual list is: Boston, San Francisco, NY, LA, Chicago, Dallas, Miami (Bal Harbor), Costa Mesa, Las Vegas, maybe King of Prussia near Philadelphia and Troy, Michigan.
St. Petersburg, Russia is vastly different from Newport, RI. American cities aren't vastly different from each other.

Torontonians specifically are sulky about Americans, yet they routinely spend millions to create a B-grade copy of a public space redesign disaster (Times Square)! If it sucks in New York, it's really going to suck in Toronto. Looking over one's shoulder in an effort to be "world class" does not work. They are trapped between a total lack of creative inspiration that doesn't directly involve the influence of the country they can't stop bitching about. This could actually be "a moment" for Toronto, as NYC is arguably in its death throes, culturally speaking, yet they are terrified of originality.

R396, there are so many upscale stores in American cities. America has the richest zip codes on the planet and American cities have a mix of upscale and botique stores. In America there is Wall St and Main St, and generally small business are more essential in small towns and certain historic neighbhorhoods. Each American city is divided off on social class unfortunately so in a minortiy community you will see more Foot Lockers, City Blue, FUBU stores whereas in a rich area you will see more upscale stores. American cities all each have pockets of hipster stores. American cities are so different from each other you can't really put them together and make them similar. Each lifestyle is different. Chicago is different from Dallas and Miami is different from Boston.

R424, the three most important cities worldwide for luxury retail are London, Paris and New York. Not everything is about the U.S., although it is an extremely important player in the luxury market. There are also wealthy Europeans and wealthy Asians who like to travel to London and Paris. The Dior flagship store in Paris is a little more impressive than the Dior boutique in Chevy Chase, MD. I'm not exactly sure which American cities and towns have the smallest, lamest versions of Saks Fifth Avenue or Neiman Marcus, but whichever they are, they don't count as luxury retail destinations. Anyways, this whole discussion started with the comparison between Toronto and Tulsa. There is no question that there is more luxury retail in Toronto.
Toronto is larger than life. The CN tower is larger than life. So is the Rogers Centre. So are the buildings near the intersection of Bay and King, and the houses in The Bridle Path neighbourhood. Plenty of American cities don't have symphonies, ballet and opera companies, and theatre scenes of the same quality as those in Toronto. Toronto's Pearson airport is much nicer than dumpy, old LaGuardia.

Torontonians weren't mean-spirited, just boring. The whole city was boring. Yes, there was plenty to do it was more of a blanket of dullness over the entire country. They did have a sort of schizophrenic relationship with the US. Half the time they hated it and the other half they were deeply envious.
A popular joke there:

Three. One to screw it in and two to go to New York and see how they do it there.

R425, extreme complex to prove Toronto is all that. I have been there and believe me it can get boring pretty quickly. The best thing about Toronto is mult-culturaliam but overall the city is turning into a condo city. The city has no passion. It is safe and politically correct, and expensive. Stuffed-shirts, most of them.Toronto is not a super innovative place, for a first world country it's mostly financial services here and some tech. Their fashion week is quite small and corporate. It's too expensive for most artists to live here. And no a city does not have to be a London or NY to love it. It can be small or big. Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker used to own 20 East 10th Street. They were asking $25 million for it. If you walk along 10th Street between University Place and Fifth Avenue, you can't even tell you're in an expensive neighbourhood because the townhouses are very plain and drab. At least when you're in Belgrave Square or Eaton Square in London, it's obvious you're in a wealthy neighbourhood.

Speaking of Toronto, here's a late breaking story about a Toronto boy, an heir to his fathers tract home building fortune, who moved to Los Angeles ( the 4th largest Canadian city in terms of number of Canadians living there ( about 1 million) .
This Toronto lad has done Canada proud by committing a spectacularly gruesome torture and murder of a woman, in West Hollywood, who was found drained of all blood ( he may have drank it ) , she had been tortured and mutilated and had indecencies committed with her body. He had been barricaded inside their West Hollywood home for days with the body.
See that America, you don't need a gun to kill people, with some good old Canadian creativity and that "Can-Do" spirit , you can make the headlines even in a city that doesn't shock all that easy, like Tulsa, or on this case LA.
Told you we were hard-core.

An artist and screenwriter from a prominent Canadian family was charged Tuesday with torturing, killing and draining the blood from the body of his girlfriend at their West Hollywood apartment.
Appearing in a Los Angeles courtroom, Blake Leibel, 35, pleaded not guilty to felony charges including murder, torture, mayhem and aggravated mayhem, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.
Leibel is accused of killing his 30-year-old girlfriend, Iana Kasian, sometime between May 23 and May 26 at the apartment in the 8500 block of Holloway Drive, prosecutors said.
Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies came to the apartment on May 26 on the request of Kasian’s mother, who asked them to perform a welfare check, Sheriff's Deputy Sara Rodriguez said.
Inside the flat, deputies found a grisly scene.
Before she was killed, Kasian had been tortured, her body mangled. “All of her blood was drained from her body,” the district attorney’s office said in a statement.
Leibel had barricaded himself in the apartment, putting furniture and bedding to block the door, sheriff’s Lt. Dave Coleman told reporters. He seemed “agitated and uncooperative,” Coleman added.

[quote]An artist and screenwriter from a prominent Canadian family
"Prominent"? That's a fucking laugh , his father built tract housing subdivision in the Toronto suburbs, shoddy cracker box shacks sold at grossly inflated prices top the unwary Asians. The only thin "prominent " in that family are their great big hooked noses.
His imdb says he was a "creative consultant" on an animated "Spaceballs" cartoon based on Mel Brooks movie, He was a world class gamer apparently.
Sounds like Papa sent he freak out of the country before he could be a embarrassment and got him so work through the Hollywood mafia. His father was like a very low rent version of Trump, Real Estate developer is Canadian for "slum lord"
The rest of the story should be mildly entertaining.

A Canadian friend of mine gave me shit for American attitudes towards illegal immigration. We have at least 11 million or more, they have 100,000. Shut the fuck up.

I do not know WTF I just stumbled across on that Leibels guys website, but it was seriously sinister looking comments about sex , and had some womens name listed as well, looked like it was being directed at his father Lorne Leibel. Not sure if it was something related to the murder in LA but I just forwarded a link to that site to the toronto star newspaper...in case they want to see it before it vanishes.
Wow, I wonder what the heck is going on in that family?

[quote]Torontonians weren't mean-spirited, just boring. The whole city was boring. Yes, there was plenty to do it was more of a blanket of dullness over the entire country.
That's because a lot of Americans are rowdy drunks, or cocaine or meth addicts. Canadians are sensible and sober.

This is a metaphor for Canada-U.S. relations: a bald eagle attacks a Canada goose on Vancouver Island. Someone should blow that demented eagle's head off.

"Someone should blow that demented eagle's head off.'

Such a dull nation of people. In the annals of history, who will remember the Canadians?
by Anonymous | reply 460 | June 12, 2016 7:39 PM |
R460 - I so agree, like when was the last time Canadians had 50 people killed, and 53 injured in a mass shooting? The USA is so edgy.

R458 - What's the most interesting for me, is that the bald eagle, the symbol of a strong, aggressive USA, is found mainly in British Columbia, Canada. Their habitats in the USA have been destroyed, and they now are prolific in Canada.

I have never been there, but a good friend told me that it is a country of people that are just not that bright.
Lol. That is obviously a gross exaggeration, but there must be something to it.
Perhaps they are passive people?

Canadians always refer to us (USA folk) and them as 'North Americans."
It's kind of like when people who don't have a B.A. or B.S. refer to one as a 'four year degree.

Never met a Canadian I didn't like or not get on with, and I've done a lot of business there in the past. Toronto and Montreal are world-class cities, IMHO. I find their way of relating to people familiar. Many of the men are sexy and good looking too. Almost all the best hockey players in America are Canadian, so you Americans should at least be grateful for that!
by Anonymous | reply 470 | March 23, 2018 11:08 PM |
I don’t care for them.
by Anonymous | reply 471 | March 23, 2018 11:17 PM |
Just out of curiosity which foreigners do Americans like, other than Palestinians? Most here don't seem to particularly care for Mexicans, South-East Asians, Indians from India, or the British. Now I learn Canadians are not popular hete either. Interesting...
by Anonymous | reply 472 | March 30, 2018 11:29 AM |
R438 WTF are you trying to prove? Canadians have their bad apples, just like any other country. Nothing can compare to the US though, where mass murders are a daily thing.
by Anonymous | reply 473 | March 30, 2018 11:37 AM |
Yeah, but in Canada they'll ship weed to your house.
by Anonymous | reply 474 | March 30, 2018 12:02 PM |
Surprised more Canadian fans don't speak out here. If you're Canadian living in the states, do you feel you are personally not appreciated? Speak out!
by Anonymous | reply 475 | March 30, 2018 12:12 PM |
I'm not Canadian, but I can only speak for how people in my country look at Americans. Basically Americans have a really bad reputation here. They see Americans as fat, ignorant and stupid. Canadians are generally seen as nice and harmless.
by Anonymous | reply 476 | March 30, 2018 12:56 PM |
Oh, and as a follow up: Americans are seen as the joke of the world after electing Trump. That didn't exactly help their reputation 😂
by Anonymous | reply 477 | March 30, 2018 12:58 PM |
Don't even dare to call me or my fellow countrymen fat. We are literally the 5th thinnest country in the world. Then there's USA 😂😂
