Johnny Weir strikes me as a canny businessman. He figured out what sells. Can you even name another former professional skater that has a career on a broadcast network station hosting non-skating events?

I saw a segment on Weir years ago. He showed just a glimpse of what skating was like, he was standing in a trash can full of icy water, I guess it has something to do with sports injuries. Weir has a persona of some queeny guy, but skating is a very demanding sport, you have to be very personally disciplined and your parents have to support you as a child and pay for skating expenses so you can do it. That means working two jobs and driving a child to some distant rink at all hours. Weir is well aware that people sacrificed for him. He sacrificed for himself, so he could be a success.

He did a documentary on gays in Russia pursuing skating. He was very serious and you could tell, a bit world-weary. Skating has traditionally not been gay friendly, although it's full of gays. He got points taken off for dressing queeny although he skated well. Skating is a rough life, after all that hard work now they don't have all the lucrative ice shows Olympic skaters could make professional money doing. Weir has adapted and made himself a larger than life persona to take in the money.

I think Weir is a person whose career fell at the end of one epoch and the beginning of another. Olympic skaters have to perform before judges from very homophobic countries and it takes balls to be out like he was, when it was not guaranteed to be accepted at all. He's got my respect, silly hats and all. That's show business.

This is a discouraging thread. Most of the people who "make your skin crawl" are effeminate and/or flamboyant. I can get pretentious and obviously "performing" fashion types like Andre Leon Talley, but a lot of people here listed just about every effeminate guy in the public eye. Everything is subjective, but Carson Kressley, for example, seems like a decent person and the only criticisms he invites upon himself in my view would come from either his very (naturally, not performed) gay mannerisms or his equally effeminate appearance.

This just reinforces my concerns that few people are as homophobic as gay men are. It makes me sad. Every time I see any openly gay man who isn't modelesque and who couldn't "pass"--those who I'm certain many of you drool over, like Matt Bomer or Cheyenne Jackson--I know that gay men like the majority here are at home with your skin crawling because in your view all gay men should look like male fitness models and act, at best, only questionably gay. That's a fantasy world. You and I both know that the majority of gay men are obviously gay. You and I both know that most of you find naturally gay mannerisms to be revolting. For my part, I know and acknowledge I am obviously gay and I consistently pick up on FAR more repulsion from other gay men--most of them equally obviously gay, oftentimes more flamboyant--than I ever have from straight men, who in my experience don't care one way or another.

You make a good point R142. But it's also true that the media exploit stereotypes, and effeminate men fit the gay stereotype. That's why many gays dislike men like Carson Kressley and Johnny Weir, who play along and accentuate their most flamboyant qualities.

But I find it remarkable that those who emphasize stereotypically gay qualities seem to be derided by the majority of gay men here and probably elsewhere. Whereas those who accentuate, emphasize and play up stereotypically masucline qualities--the Matt Bomers and Wentworth Millers and even Anderson Coopers, who could "pass" and in most cases did pass as straight for a while--become gay icons because they have a leading man face and body and play down their inherent gay mannerisms. These guys are never brought up by gay men as well known gay men who embarrass them; yet, in all honesty some such men embarrass me far more than a flamboyant TV personality. Not because I resent their obviously gay manners, but because I simultaneously resent and pity that they work too hard to cover for their naturally gay mannerisms and at the same time show off their worked out bodies, etc. which to me is really one of the ultimate gay qualities today.

This doesn't apply to all the men I mentioned, but Cooper is a prime example. I watched his daily talk show for a while and it became painful for me to witness him probe into the personal lives of every guest, discuss his elderly mother's sex life ad nauseum, and even play coy with Kathy Griffin regularly and dodge gay implications while clearly--in my view--working overtime to obsessively "act straight," even as I and many others knew he wasn't. This offended me not because he wanted his life to be private but because he wanted that while giddily exploiting other people's private lives and amassing the encouragement and support of the lgbt media and most gay people. In my opinion, the primary reason he was able to pull this off is because most people view him as "hot," and he is reasonably passable, and it seems those two qualities will endear any gay man to all gay men. Big juicy arms and pecs packed into a tight tee shirt, a movie star face and the ability to turn down the gay dial when convenient. Cooper since coming out has often revealed far more effeminate mannerisms, and I frankly like him better that way but I remain bothered that his "I'm a respected news anchor" mode is a more masculine performance.

I am even more troubled that most gay men agree with that: want to be respected? Then try as hard as you can to cover up any innately effeminate body language and speech.

And this is when we end up with weirdos like Lindsey Graham (whom I've met in person and who IMO is a 10 on the gaydar) and Marcus Bachmann--who just aren't good at covering.

Someone who is more successful but not convincingly so is the largely reviled Aaron Schock (who is definitely gay, beyond any doubt, but wishes he weren't)--and yet his name never comes up in answers to questions like this, either. He is "hot," and even though his motivations and obvious denial are suspect, gay men don't find him creepy or repulsive--even though he wanted to take away all equal rights to gay men.

No, it's Carson Kressley and Chris Colfer, who aren't fitness models or passable masculine news anchors, who get the hate from gay men. Both come across to me as generally decent guys who seem to lead low-key offscreen personal lives, and I've never heard a cruel word from either of them about anyone else. And to their credit in my opinion, these men and others like them emerged on the scene as gay, take it or leave it. Both made themselves vulnerable to total career rejection and failure by virtue of doing that. And that is extraordinarily brave. It's less brave and certainly indicative of either less talent or a lesser work ethic to rest on photoshoots of one's hot body and deny who you really are.
