R15 Well it has been over 40 years since I have seen an episode of Laredo I suppose, but I still remember an episode where William Smith was tied up bare chested arms over head from a tree with some crazy native American woman lusting after him.

Yes, R18, that is the outstanding Laredo episode, because even though the idiot director refuses to photograph Smith properly when he takes his shirt off (because it's so hot and sunny), he does get tied up like that. (Though having his arms up like that ruins the lay of his chest muscles.) Extra fun: the Indian woman who takes a shine to him because of his physique is Shelly Morrison, later Rosario on Will & Grace.

There are about seven or eight other episodes in which Smith is shirtless in Laredo, and they vary from inconclusively shot to definitive. It was the same with Van Williams in Surfside 6 and Clint Walker in Cheyenne. Because the shirtless stuff was usually so gratuitous, it stands out in memory, and we think of it as ubiquitous. But that's only because skin was not as common then as now.

I disagree about John Smith about his build. He was lean, but had good muscle tone and the fact that he was slightly bow-legged and pigeon toed made him that much hotter. He wasn't built to play Tarzan, but he was in no less shape than any of the other TV studs back then.

Agree with all of this, which is why I call it the Brokeback Mountain of the '60s. "Slim" and "Jess" were clearly in love with each other from the moment they laid eyes on each other in the pilot episode.

About that episode, it ends with Slim catching up to Jess on horseback, the latter who was on his way out of town, and almost begging him to stay on at the ranch. Throughout the series run, it's clear that they're both in love with each other.

You could also literally tell what both men looked like naked with the way their asses and VPL were showcased in those super tight pants. It's funny that the censors had a hissy fit over Barbara Eden's midriff on I Dream of Jeannie, but you could easily flip the channel and see exactly which side of his pants John Smith was stuffed down on that evening's episode of Laramie.
