And it's on TCM right now. Anyone watching?
I think the real mystery is why does Charlton Heston live with a much older man? Are they lovers?

Your question suggests you're not paying attention

Ouch! That hurt!

I'm watching now, OP. A while ago, I looked to rent it, and I couldn't find it available anywhere.

It's set in 2022 and NYC has a population of 40 million. I guess we're better off than they predicted.

I remember thinking the "going home" place reminded me of an airport.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | April 30, 2016 7:15 PM |
Did they already go to the "Tree Museum?"
by Anonymous | reply 6 | April 30, 2016 7:16 PM |
Charlton is young enough to remember all this beauty.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | April 30, 2016 7:19 PM |
I was spelling Soylent wrong, oops!
by Anonymous | reply 8 | April 30, 2016 7:36 PM |
I started it over from the beginning on Amazon. So far, I don't remember any of it from seeing it on first released, except EG Robinson saying it was beautiful, the tulips.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | April 30, 2016 7:57 PM |
That's a very pretty thug, at the beginning.

There will be riots, before there will be this,

The movie is good, but the book was much better.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | May 1, 2016 12:48 AM |
It could be remade. Even with the ending known, there are so many possibilities.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | May 1, 2016 1:05 AM |
It was Edward G. Robinson's last movie. It disturbed me greatly when I first saw it.

Can someone tell me the music that plays during the euthanasia scene?
by Anonymous | reply 16 | May 1, 2016 2:45 AM |
This is one of those movies that would actually benefit from a remake, and I don't say that often.

The overture was the principal theme from the first movement of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6, the "Pathetique." - When the visual presentation starts, the music is the first movement of Ludwig van Beethoven's "Symphony #6 (The Pastoral)". - When the flock of sheep appear, the music is "Morning" from Edvard Grieg's "Peer Gynt Suite #1". - At the end of the presentation is "Asas Death", also from the "Peer Gynt Suite".

I imagine NYC would have a population closer to 40 million if they stopped eating so many people.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | May 1, 2016 3:02 AM |
I don't think they eat too many people, R19. And never tourists, to clarify.

I watched it today as well. Felt so bad for the beautiful Leigh Taylor Young...as usual, saddled with a greasy ugly old man. Why is she NEVER paired with a young attractive man?
by Anonymous | reply 21 | May 1, 2016 3:17 AM |
She was paired with Ryan O'Neal in THE BIG BOUNCE, but there were a few greasey old guys in there as well.

Soylent Green is really tasty with a little ketchup and maybe some hot sauce.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | May 3, 2016 2:09 AM |
One of the cute things the movie does to set the mood is to describe the southern NYC border as being "Philidelphia", implying that both cities have grown so much that they abut each other in 2020.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | May 3, 2016 2:11 AM |
The Soylent oceanographic research report is dated "2015-2019". I was surprised that they refer to "global warming" because I didn't know that they knew about that in 1973 when the movie was made. It takes place in 2022.

It's $150 per jar, R26! You must be a millionaire!
Seriously, it is interesting that they overestimated the environmental problems like population, food safety, housing and so forth; but the underestimated the effect of inflation. Probably because the Nixon/Ford/Carter years of high-inflation were in the future. If they wanted to be more real-life scary, they might have priced strawberry jam at $1500 a jar instead. I bet that today, you could go to Barneys or similar and find jam for $150 a jar, and people aren't even that shocked about it. But it won't be Smuckers; or, it might be, but it certainly won't have a Smuckers label on it!

I like all the pocket doors everywhere, I kept expecting them to go "swootch" upon opening & closing, like on Star Trek.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | May 3, 2016 2:51 AM |
I am watching it now.
I loved the intro, where the did a montage of environmental photos showing degradation over the decades.
E. G. Robinson laments the year-long heatwaves due to the “greenhouse effect”. I’m surprised they knew about that in 1973 when the movie was released.
E. G. Robinson Was 80 when the movie was filmed. He looks much younger. I was born in 1960, so in 2022 when the movie takes place, I’d be 62. I had thought I’d be Robinson’s age, but I guess not. But Robinson should therefore have a clear memory of society before it went to shit.
I also liked the tree museum.
I also recall a comment at some point saying that the Indian Ocean was dead.
I wish they made more sci-if movies like this today.

Filmed in 1973, and Charlton Heston has a black boss. The Omega Man was filmed in 1971 and there were a number of Black main characters. It seems like we’ve gone backwards and have fewer prominent Blacks in film today.

From 1968 onward, Paul Ehrlich was regularly appearing with Cavett and Carson pushing his doomsday porn. The first Earth Day was 1970 This movie was part of that trend.
[quote] By 1985 enough millions will have died to reduce the earth's population to some acceptable level, like 1.5 billion people.
[quote] In ten years [i.e., 1980] all important animal life in the sea will be extinct. Large areas of coastline will have to be evacuated because of the stench of dead fish.
[quote] I would take even money that England will not exist in the year 2000.
Earth Day quotes from other "prophets" are also fun.

I love the zombie priest.
“We don’t see rich people here anymore....”
The priest is also black.

R12 is correct - the book title Make Room! Make Room! by Harry Harrison is better! There are a couple of homosexual subplots - neither of which involve the character played by Heston.

It was pretty good. Fast pasted, unlike the tedious Omega Man, which I saw yesterday.

I used to watch The Planet Of The Apes movies, The Omega Man and Soylent Green on the 4:30 Movie in the 1970's. I LOVED The Planet Of The Apes movie and Soylent Green.
