Yacht Rock is that smooth, mellow music that emanated from Southern California in the late 1970s and early 80s. It has long served as the anthem for the “yuppies” of the 80s, since they LOVE to listen to Yacht Rock as they cruise through the harbor on the way to meet their cocaine dealer. If you’ve ever visited the dentist or been in an elevator you’ve definitely heard some Yacht Rock.
What is the best YACHT ROCK single of all time - sung by a FEMALE?

Gypsy is not yacht rock. Lotta Love is.

Ann & Nancy would feel insulted if someone called their music 'Yacht Rock".

Yacht Ass works better, at least for Ann.

Nicolette Larson - Lotta Love is the best "yacht" song to me. No doubt.

Also, I need to learn how to read. Sorry. Female: would Angel of the Morning count, even though it is a cover?

Worst Poll EVER!
Linda Ronstadt is the Queen of Yacht Rock.
She's clearly rock, but on the smooth side. Most of the other singers on this thread are easy listening lounge singers.

Lots of playlists here.
the term has only gained strength, coming to describe a whole smooth aesthetic that existed roughly from 1975 to 1982, expanding far beyond the white soft-rockers of LA and encompassing smooth jazz and "Yacht Soul." We at AllMusic are paying tribute to that expanded definition, collecting our favorite sounds, songs, and grooves from an era when smooth meant everything.

So just because AllMusic and the Poll Troll say so, "Yacht Rock" is suddenly a jandra? I'm not buying it.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | April 16, 2016 8:52 PM |
I programmed an actual mellow rock FM station in the northwest (patterned after LA's popular KNX-FM of the day) and I've never heard of 'yacht rock'.
Yes, there are boats there.

Yeah...and in what fucking world is "Wind Beneath My Wings" from 1989 yacht rock?
Of those choices, I'd probably pick Nicolette. Great song.
My vote would be for Rita Coolidge. "(Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher and Higher" or "We're All Alone"...take your pick.

R18, was it K103 in Portland? Lots of yacht rock on there.
R19, "We're All Alone!" Yes! Perfect!

R22, I loved that! Thanks for sharing it.
"You are a minstrel, Oregon, and I your guitar."

Thanks, R25. That's generally believed to be the longest radio imaging jingle ever recorded, period. Recorded by TM Productions in Dallas, you think it will end and then it never does! The idea was to make the station imaging sound like songs, but it was an idea which tended to be over the top, in retrospect.
Mellow rock was well suited to Eugene, where the station generally pulled #1 or #2 females (and probably gay men!) Our version was a bit more progressive rock and album oriented than some others. We also gave the wonderful Delilah her second radio job ever...she held down the night shift via pre-recorded voice tracks, very much foreshadowing her current Premiere syndicated show.

"Lotta Love" was written by Neil Young, not that it matters I just think it's interesting.

"Lonely Nights (Angel Face)" by Captain and Tennille

R28 "Lotta Love" was originally written and recorded by Neil Young. Nicolette Larsen was one of his backing singers, and she covered the song as well.

I love all kinds of music, but I definitely have an appreciation for this “genre”. I voted for Lotta Love, one of my all time favorites, and one of the first 45s I ever bought. I was in elementary school at the time and my father thought it was amusing how much I loved that song.

I think a Pointer Sisters song needs to be on the list.
Either "Slow Hand", or "He's So Shy".

Melba Moore did a vastly superior version of R35 song.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | April 19, 2020 6:38 AM |
Melba is a bit nasal and shrill.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | April 19, 2020 6:42 AM |
Someone called Bobbi Walker also tried her hand at the song but the original version by Lulu was the hit, despite being two or three years old by the time it charted.

For me it's a close call between Lotta Love and Gypsy.
