"The Night Manager" on AMC

Starring Hugh Laurie and Tom Hiddleston.

Based on the 1993 novel of the same name by John le Carré and updated to the present day.

Former British soldier Jonathan Pine (Tom Hiddleston) is recruited by Angela Burr (Olivia Colman), an intelligence operative. He is tasked to navigate Whitehall and Washington, D.C. where there is an alliance between the intelligence community and the secret arms trade. He must infiltrate the inner circle of arms dealer Richard Onslow Roper (Hugh Laurie), Roper's girlfriend Jed (Elizabeth Debicki), and associate Corkoran (Tom Hollander).

Will anyone be watching?

is this a remake of that Barbra Streisand/Gene Hackman film?

by Anonymousreply 1April 13, 2016 5:27 AM

I, myself, plan to watch it.

by Anonymousreply 2April 13, 2016 5:28 AM

Tom Hiddleston looks really good in the previews.

Brit here, no spoilers. Plot, variety of locations and fine cast ensured I stayed with it. No expense spared. Gay interest (apart from Hiddleston).

It evidently had watercooler appeal, in that viewers united to discuss the show, 'just like back the old days.' The original TV 'Tinker Tailor' was for me the benchmark Le Carre, which I periodically re-watch.

'Night Manager' despite its feature film budget didn't for me quite match the downbeat glamour of 'Tinker Tailor', but then I'm old. Be interested to see what DL makes of 'Night Manager.' Recommended!

by Anonymousreply 4April 13, 2016 6:45 AM

I couldn't get through the whole show. The casting was odd and unconvincing. I did not buy Hugh Laurie as the bad guy, and Tom Hiddleston is not even poor man's James Bond. The woman playing Laurie's wife can't act her way out of a paper bag. Olivia Colman and Tom Hollander make it watchable.

by Anonymousreply 5April 13, 2016 6:54 AM

Been there and done that...watched it on BBC iPlayer. Loved Oliva Coleman....enjoyed her performance.

by Anonymousreply 6April 13, 2016 7:01 AM

It looks great, but the writing is weak. Olivia Colman steals the show from both Hiddleston and Laurie, whose characters make little sense.

by Anonymousreply 7April 13, 2016 6:48 PM

I haven't seen it, but Colman is the name I keep hearing when it comes to the reason to watch, to the point that maybe she should be the new Bond.

by Anonymousreply 8April 14, 2016 3:11 AM

I'll definitely be watching

by Anonymousreply 11April 14, 2016 4:02 AM

I'll take R4's advice and watch it.

If for nothing else, just to ogle Hiddleston.

by Anonymousreply 12April 15, 2016 12:07 AM

It premieres tonight, if anyone cares.

by Anonymousreply 14April 20, 2016 12:02 AM

I'm trying to watch it but it's pretty dull.

by Anonymousreply 15April 20, 2016 2:21 AM

What R15 said. Rather cheesy.

by Anonymousreply 16April 20, 2016 4:15 AM

It is dull, R15, isn't it?

by Anonymousreply 17April 20, 2016 4:34 AM

Visually, it's beautiful, though I did have to laugh at Morocco trying to pass for Egypt. It was obvious it was the former and you don't have to be some globetrotter to know it.

Hiddleston is a very attractive man, but I have to admit, it's the first time I've ever seen him in anything.I've never seen his other work. I think he's a good enough actor, but I do hope this series gets better because it was as if they were satirizing a Bond film.

by Anonymousreply 18April 20, 2016 4:59 AM

Any other DirecTV customers' have trouble recording this show? I set up the recording last week to record all new eps, starting with this week's premiere and when I search for the program it shows that it's set to record, but it didn't record the ep. Ughhhhh...

I wanna make love to him slowly and religiously--like they do in the Bible.

by Anonymousreply 20April 20, 2016 7:31 AM

I tried watching this last month and gave up after the first episode. It was boring

by Anonymousreply 21April 20, 2016 8:07 AM

Very third rate show. Going to get canceled after season 1. Hiddleston's character was flat out dull.

by Anonymousreply 22April 20, 2016 7:14 PM

R22, it's a 6 part miniseries.

by Anonymousreply 23April 20, 2016 7:51 PM

The ratings were crap, but the show has sold everywhere and made AMC and the BBC loads of money already. It is absolutely going to get renewed if the people involved want to continue with it.

by Anonymousreply 24April 20, 2016 11:41 PM

I watched the first episode yesterday, and I loved it. It reminds me of the Sean Connery era Bond fillms. The scenery was gorgeous. Tom Hiddleston was extremely watchable, and I found Hugh Laurie very convincing as the bad guy. He's menacing. There are the usual slimy bureaucrats inside the government, and I found Morocco convincing as Sgypt. So there.

by Anonymousreply 25April 24, 2016 1:08 PM

So the show's had an absolutely huge jump with time-delayed viewing. Interesting. Looks like the BBC and AMC will probably be pushing hard for a second season now.

How can a six-part miniseries have a second season?

by Anonymousreply 27April 26, 2016 12:01 AM

Considering what you wrote here...

"I watched the first episode yesterday, and I loved it. It reminds me of the Sean Connery era Bond fillms. The scenery was gorgeous. Tom Hiddleston was extremely watchable, and I found Hugh Laurie very convincing as the bad guy. He's menacing. There are the usual slimy bureaucrats inside the government, "

...quelle surprise regarding this:

"and I found Morocco convincing as Sgypt[sic]. So there. "

"So there" is essentially the equivalent of Chris Rock's joke about taking pride in your ignorance. Don't.

by Anonymousreply 28April 26, 2016 12:02 AM

Hiddleston is hoping he did enough in this to get Bond but he didn't seem gritty enough to me.

by Anonymousreply 29April 26, 2016 12:03 AM

"How can a six-part miniseries have a second season? "

Hiddleston gets a psychedelic van, a dog and a couple of people going around the world solving crimes.

by Anonymousreply 30April 26, 2016 12:06 AM

In Britain six episodes is a season. And yes, they desperately want to extend it, but Laurie and Hiddleston want le Carre to write a sequel first.

by Anonymousreply 31April 26, 2016 12:14 AM

I am watching 2nd episode. So far, I'm liking it.

by Anonymousreply 32April 27, 2016 4:03 AM
Laurie and Hiddleston want Le Carre to write a sequel first.

At a guess this seems like a reach. Le Carre is now into his 80s, very rich, the subject of a biography and soon to publish his own memoir. He's still prolific, so doubtless has another novel (remote from 'NM' buzz) underway.

I think it unlikely he'd be seen to turn to a sequel not necessarily of his choosing at the behest of the BBC and two popular actors, even if they are both Old Etonians. We'll see.

by Anonymousreply 33April 27, 2016 7:18 AM

I think it's unlikely too, BUT it's le Carre's sons that own the production company that brought The Night Manager to TV screens. To say he has motivation is an understatement.

by Anonymousreply 36April 28, 2016 5:02 AM

We enjoyed it here in the UK, but r5 is right. Its a series based on a novel (and was changed considerably from the book) so how can there be a second series unless Le Carre writes one? I hate it when great series such as Homeland are ruined and diluted by continuing with several weaker series until people lose interest.

by Anonymousreply 37April 28, 2016 5:11 AM

I'm surprised with this being DL (and the only place I've ever heard of him) that no one has mentioned Russell Tovey in the first episode.

by Anonymousreply 38April 28, 2016 6:16 AM

Who's Russell Tovey?

by Anonymousreply 39April 28, 2016 6:20 AM

The British embassy guy with the unfortunate ears. He's openly gay and DL was the only place I ever saw him mentioned

by Anonymousreply 40April 28, 2016 6:23 AM

As soon as I saw that sleazoid Tovey, I lost interest in the show.

by Anonymousreply 41April 28, 2016 10:59 PM

Overused plot. Nice guy falls in love with gangster's whore. Whore gets murdered. Nice guy brings down those responsible.

by Anonymousreply 42April 28, 2016 11:10 PM

It's not innovative and life changing but it's bloody entertaining, beautifully filmed, with a good cast. Hiddleston is very bangable in it.

by Anonymousreply 43April 28, 2016 11:30 PM

Its an expensive production but ruined by the girl playing the love interest - Elizabeth Debecki or suchlike - she is a total blank. What would the Laurie character have seen in her?

by Anonymousreply 44April 29, 2016 5:50 AM

The Laurie character is at the very least a narcissistic sociopath, so would likely go for eye/arm candy who is totally malleable. Bought and paid for. Or so he thinks.

Actually my main problem with TNM is Laurie. He looks devilish enough, but comes across to me as a pantomime villain: way too many line readings with the same rasping emphasis. He appears second-rate up against Hiddleston, who has more vocal range and nuance.

by Anonymousreply 45April 29, 2016 6:55 AM
Its an expensive production but ruined by the girl playing the love interest - Elizabeth Debecki or suchlike - she is a total blank.

Agree. TERRIBLE actress.

by Anonymousreply 46April 29, 2016 6:59 AM

R4 said there was gay interest.

Is there?

by Anonymousreply 47April 29, 2016 7:51 AM

Corky (Tom Hollander) is gay.

by Anonymousreply 48April 29, 2016 7:53 AM

Tom Hollander is usually gay - has any actor played more gay roles?

by Anonymousreply 49April 29, 2016 9:47 AM

That should have been 'has any other actor played more gay roles? !

by Anonymousreply 50April 29, 2016 9:49 AM

R45 Laurie's accent choice is absolutely terrible. Posh English accents have softened over the last 20-30 years. Even the Queen's has changed. It just made his character seem ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 51April 29, 2016 4:21 PM

R45 is spot-on. I adore Laurie as an actor, but the moment he introduced himself as "Dickie," I felt like he was playing a caricature of a villain. Granted, I'm only two episodes in, but I think Laurie is a lot like Clooney or Hanks in that it's hard to see Laurie as "serious" or "evil." Probably didn't help that I watched the second episode right after I watched "Veep."

by Anonymousreply 52April 29, 2016 4:28 PM

I'm enjoying it so far.

by Anonymousreply 53April 29, 2016 4:29 PM

Laurie is a good actor, but he's far more suited to playing characters who straddle the line between good and bad. I just don't 'believe' him as an out and out villain. His comedy skills are second to none though, and boy does he know how to fall over!

by Anonymousreply 54April 29, 2016 4:33 PM

Poor Russell Tovey - the British masculine gay - has been relegated to less than 2 minutes screen time. He was basically an extra.

by Anonymousreply 55April 29, 2016 4:39 PM

Why did R41 call Tovey a "sleazoid"? Does he have a reputation?

by Anonymousreply 56April 29, 2016 4:41 PM

Neither male lead is ideally cast. Laurie glowers well, but I don't find him threatening enough. Hiddleston is more attractive here than in any of his other films/shows (I'd do him in a nanosecond), but this part needs someone more like a young Michael Caine. Honestly Tom Hardy would have been much better, but I doubt he would bother with a TV project right now. Also, there's no real chemistry between Hiddleston and any of the female characters.

I haven't read LeCarre's book, but while the story is mildly engaging, it seems pretty familiar territory and the production overall seems second-rate.

Tom Hollander is mildly amusing, but he's basically playing a nasty, dangerous queen - something he can do with his eyes closed.

by Anonymousreply 57April 29, 2016 4:46 PM

I don't know much about Hollander. Is he gay?

R59 here - I forgot that DL redacts posts with links to The Independent. Anyway, there's a recent interview with him there where he states that he isn't gay. Given that his being out wouldn't harm his career IMO, there's no reason to disbelieve him. He certainly plays gay well.

by Anonymousreply 60April 29, 2016 5:00 PM

My favorite Tom-Hollander-playing-gay movie is called Bedrooms and Hallways. It's a funny little movie from around 2002 with the very hot James Purefoy and Kevin McKidd as one quasi couple and Tom Hollander and Hugo Weaving as another. Tom is hilarious as a kind of a tart. I recommend it.

Do the two Toms hookup at any time in The Night Manager? That would be worth watching.

by Anonymousreply 61April 29, 2016 5:56 PM

I prefer my Americans be played by Americans.

by Anonymousreply 62April 29, 2016 5:59 PM

Little Tom's attraction to Big Tom adds to the unfolding psychological game in hand. It becomes a point of middling but effective importance.

by Anonymousreply 63April 29, 2016 6:58 PM

Can someone catch me up on the plot?

I caught episode three, but I'm sort of lost. The story is hard to follow, because there's so much being un-said.

Is the Hiddleston character gay? He seems like it. I agree, though... he's totally fuckable.

Who did Russell Tovey play? I missed it.

There's a marathon today on AMC, so I might catch it.

by Anonymousreply 64May 7, 2016 11:01 PM

Tovey was in the first episode. He played the embassy guy who gets the documents from Hiddleston's character. Tovey sends these documents to Colman's character and that gets the ball rolling. Later in the first episode Hiddleston's character begs Tovey's character to help the mistress to go undercover and Tovey's character denies his request.

by Anonymousreply 65May 7, 2016 11:16 PM

Russel Tovey received quite a backlash two years ago for some remarks he made. I've got to admit the controversy put me off bigtime and it was one of the reasons why I wasn't in the mood to watch the second season of HBO's Looking.

In Britain six weeks is not a "season" , r31.

I think it was ok. Coleman and Hollander were the best thing about it. Hiddleston was boring and wooden, just an extension of his polite Eton schoolboy training. Laurie had surprisingly little psychological depth.

A second series wouldn't work with the whole cast - certainly not the Hughe Laurie character - as that would completely undermine series 1 .

I found it good couch potato viewing, but nothing compelling. I wasn't a fan of the Danish director, what she was aiming for didn't seem to match with the direction the storyline was going in.

by Anonymousreply 69May 8, 2016 10:03 AM
In Britain six weeks is not a "season"?

Do you mean that in a literal sense, as in that Britain uses the term series instead of season? Because otherwise there are shows like Absolutely Fabulous which had, in their first two seasons, only six episodes (in later series / seasons they added specials and one or two episodes more and season 6 were just 3 episodes). Vicar of Dibley series / seasons had from just 3 episodes to up to 8 episodes, including specials, per series / season.

by Anonymousreply 70May 8, 2016 10:44 AM

The latest season of Grantchester, which the British call a "series," was only six episodes.

by Anonymousreply 71May 8, 2016 10:47 AM

What word do the Brits use to describe an entire series, i.e., one with multiple seasons?

by Anonymousreply 72May 8, 2016 10:53 AM

Okay, so I caught the first three episodes in the AMC marathon, and I absolutely LOVED it!

I finally get why people love Tom Hiddleston. He is so fucking sexy! His hair, his body, his face, his demeanor. I also see why people are speculating that he should be the next James Bond. He's basically a younger version of Daniel Craig, which is awesome.

That evil little queen who is the thorn in Hiddleston's side, is perfection. He plays that role so well, and I'm surprised that the show made him the villain. But I'm happy they did, because he is great. You just want to smack him in the face.

i agree that the Hugh Laurie character is very subdued, and I'm not sure I believe that he would take the Pine character into his fold so easily. Especially since the circumstances are so questionable. So the night manager in a Swiss hotel, all of a sudden shows up as a cook in Mallorca, Spain, just in time to save his son from kidnappers? Yeah, right.

The real revelation of this show is the woman who plays the British intelligence officer, in league with Pine. Man, she's a fine actress, and she really is the driving force behind this show.

There are many familiar faces in this mini-series, and I can't wait to see how it ends up.

Oh, and more naked Tom Hiddleston, please!

I love Tom's beautiful blue eyes.

R72, in the UK their word for seasons is series as in Series 2 Episode 4.

Most shows have 5 or 6 episodes. Some shows have 2 or 3 90 minute episodes - at times shown in two 45 minute segments. However, I think the magic number is 13 for it to get picked up for foreign distribution.

Something popular like Vikings went up to 20 episodes this year - their 4th series or, in Americanese, their 4th season.

I love that British individual episodes run for whatever time it takes to properly tell the story. Some 44 minutes some 57 minutes. It's all over the board.

by Anonymousreply 75May 8, 2016 9:52 PM

You miss the point, R75. When considered in their entirety, The Sopranos, The Wire, Homicide, and every other show that lasts more than one season are referred to as a series. Each show constitutes the series. Each season is a season. My question was "What word do the British use to describe [bold]the entire run of a show[/bold]?" It's not "series," because "series" means "season" in Britain. So what is their word?

by Anonymousreply 76May 8, 2016 10:00 PM
The real revelation of this show is the woman who plays the British intelligence officer, in league with Pine.

Olivia Colman. She is indeed great, and has been in any number of UK TV shows worth watching. Happily, she's now getting good film parts.

Colman has one scene in particular which is phenomenal, Brando-in-the-back-of-the-cab good: what gives the speech such impact, apart from OC's high talent, is that it expresses the moral core of TNM. Unforgettable.

At a guess, the performance will send another BAFTA her way.

by Anonymousreply 77May 9, 2016 7:36 AM
It's not "series," because "series" means "season" in Britain. So what is their word?

I believe in the UK they simply call it the show and mabe specify like "the whole/entire show" or "the whole/entire show's run" .

by Anonymousreply 78May 9, 2016 8:12 AM

r76, here is a link to a discussion about your question. I hope it clears it up a bit a bit.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 79May 9, 2016 8:19 AM

Primarily in the sense that it's a "series" not a "season", r70, but one could also argue it's a mini-series. In fact, in the strictest terms, it may not even be a series as it was supposedly initially intended as a one-off, based on the Le Carré novel. But, since it was popular and can sell abroad, there is clamour for more.

R73, a lot of people already know who Olivia Coleman is, so she's not really a "revelation". She's so well-known that the strength of her status alone was enough to change the character from a male in the book to a female on screen. But, yes, she is the driving force in a programme that otherwise has very little drive.

by Anonymousreply 80May 9, 2016 8:50 AM

Damn, he's hot. I would lick every inch of him.

I didn't know much about Tom before this show, but I'm starting to believe that he's gay. He hasn't been romantically linked with a woman for an extended period of time, and he seems to be very "stylish," if you know what I mean.

Maybe he's in the closet in hopes of becoming a huge star. Who knows?

In any case, he's a very sexy man.

Colman is well known in the UK, not in the US.

by Anonymousreply 95May 10, 2016 2:21 AM

I think she's a very good actress, but I was shocked she was only 42. I thought she was 50 (even with the pregnancy).

by Anonymousreply 96May 10, 2016 2:42 AM

I think this is my first experience with a John Le Carre project. Just got caught up to the US airings. Is all of his work this, um, broad and hammy? The promos for the show had me expecting something a tad more sophisticated, but there are enough surface pleasures to keep me engaged for at least another week even if I don't really buy a single thing going on with the characters.

BTW, what the hell is up with - in 2016, when the world is flat - the BBC still hiring British actors who do AWFUL American accents? Talking about the black CIA guy who's partnering with Oliva Coleman and the smaller part of some American intelligence official - middle aged white woman who was in that meeting that Olivia Coleman's boss was called into. Their American accents are almost as bad as Hugh Laurie's was in HOUSE.

by Anonymousreply 97May 10, 2016 1:22 PM
Is all of his work this, um, broad and hammy?

Le Carre has often sold his work to screens big and small, and quality control only goes so far.

'The Spy Who Came In From The Cold' was a well-received downbeat b/w thriller which gave Richard Burton a suitably seedy if compelling leading role. 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy' was great TV, not least because Alec Guinness had the power to amend the script; it was a masterclass in character acting, nuance and mood, all but flawless. (Surprisingly the recent film didn't flounder in its wake, and was gripping on its own terms.) Other recent film adaptations 'The Constant Gardener' and 'A Most Wanted Man' were similarly watchable thrillers, very accomplished, if hardly upbeat about how the world works.

'The Night Manager' by contrast I did find a mixed bag. Colman and Hiddleston among others were spot on, true to the realpolitik spirit of Le Carre; but the 70s style credits and Hugh Laurie's Sideshow Bob impersonation just reek of yes, 'broad and hammy.' Le Carre isn't Ian Fleming, and producers/directors shouldn't attempt that compromise. Still, at least the work mentioned above, and other titles, show that some directors at least capture the author's spirit well.

by Anonymousreply 98May 10, 2016 6:14 PM

Perhaps I wasn't clear enough by referring to UK TV shows as "shows," but I did get your point, R76.

They are called shows. Simple as that.

R97, I'm with you. I think you have to watch it for what it is and nothing more. No real depth, just a soapy spy series/show/season/program (that about cover it? Don't want to offend any of you).

by Anonymousreply 100May 10, 2016 7:07 PM

Liked the woman who played the rich arabs mistress, Hate the blond. I think it will be eventually revealed she has some kind of essential connection to a deal in progress. There is just no there there with her.

by Anonymousreply 101May 10, 2016 7:24 PM

R98 le Carre's sons produced 'The Night Manager' so he would have had at least some sway. A lot of the problems stemmed from the fact that they tried to update the novel to make it more relevant by setting the start of it during the 'Arab Spring'. It didn't work though. The whole thing still reeks of colonialism, which made it feel outdated.

by Anonymousreply 102May 10, 2016 8:06 PM

LeCarre's more cerebral work doesn't usually adapt well to the screen, especially with directors increasingly going for pacing over nuance. SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD and A MOST WANTED MAN are probably the most successful feature film adaptations of his work. The recent TINKER, TAILOR... was OK but little more than a Cliff Notes version of the novel and it pales next to the miniseries.

THE CONSTANT GARDENER suffered from a overly-hectic, ADHD style of direction, in spite of Feinnes and Weisz. I haven't seen THE TAILOR OF PANAMA, but the worst adaptation of all is THE LITTLE DRUMMER GIRL, which should have been a terrific movie and is wrecked by the disastrous casting of Diane Keaton (in a role based in part of Vanessa Redgrave - the part cried out of Judy Davis) and the flat direction of George Roy Hill.

by Anonymousreply 103May 10, 2016 8:40 PM

..cried out for Judy Davis, I meant.

Wow, that scene with Corky making an ass of himself in the restaurant was SO uncomfortably good. It was completely cringeworthy.

The actor who plays him, does a fantastic job of being the biggest prick in the entire world.

by Anonymousreply 107May 11, 2016 5:30 AM

Poor Corky - just another twink who thought all straight gorgeous men are at least a little homoerotic. Had him on his knees, face first in a man's crouch, in a public restaurant, with no takers.

by Anonymousreply 108May 11, 2016 11:25 AM

John le Carré does actually have a cameo role in the series. Read r107 for a clue as to which scene.

by Anonymousreply 109May 11, 2016 11:32 AM

This was a fantastic episode. It's getting exciting!

Yes, the Corky scene was very awkward. When he started mimicing the waiters and calling them "greaseball," it made me very uncomfortable.

And what was with Pine fucking the blonde??? Is he an imbecile? Yes, that's the smartest fucking thing in the world to do... sleep with your benefactor's whore. Oh no, that won't get you killed.

The intel-lady did a bang up job, once again. She really takes over every scene she's in. If this were an American series, she'd probably win an Emmy for her performance.

So who killed Mr. Apostle?

by Anonymousreply 110May 11, 2016 5:12 PM

This beautiful hotel in Mallorca has a very similar setting - you have to scroll through to see the peninsula that it's set on. When I first watched the NM, I thought they were using the grounds of this hotel but after a few more episode it looks like somewhere slightly different.

The couple killed in the end. Who were they?

by Anonymousreply 112May 12, 2016 3:21 AM

Spanish guy who met with Angela Burr in the church.

by Anonymousreply 113May 12, 2016 4:06 AM

Haha, I agree, that scene at the resto was so funny, the way he was grabbing his ass...I wonder how many times they had to shoot that scene...lucky bastard!

Yes, lovely spanish views! really pretty!

by Anonymousreply 114May 12, 2016 9:20 AM

The way Hiddleston defused the situation in the restaurant was pure James Bond. It felt like a set piece audition for the role. He was so commanding in that charming Etonian manner that Bond is supposed to have.

by Anonymousreply 115May 13, 2016 2:50 AM
The couple killed in the end. Who were they?

His name is Apostle, and that was his wife.

He was in partnership with Roper at the beginning of the series, but when his daughter committed suicide, he decided to partner up with British intelligence.

by Anonymousreply 116May 13, 2016 3:44 AM

How many more episodes?

by Anonymousreply 117May 13, 2016 11:03 AM

Hiddleston would be a great Bond and it would give him a break from playing the comic book villain with the helmet that makes him look like the Tick.

by Anonymousreply 118May 13, 2016 11:54 AM

I haven't seen the latest episode yet, but what I'm getting from these comments is that Corky makes a Fool of himself in a restaurant, is rude to the waiters, and grabs Tom Hiddleson's ass and puts his face in his crotch? Nice.

by Anonymousreply 121May 15, 2016 3:11 AM

I think Hiddleston would be better as Bond than this role, he is a bit too posh. The actress playing Jed would be better suited to play the more attractive sister of Brianne of Tarth.

by Anonymousreply 122May 15, 2016 3:23 AM

Hiddleston is desperate to be the next Bond but despite his muscles he still seems too narrow-faced and delicate for the role. There needs to be an element of brute in Bond.

by Anonymousreply 127May 16, 2016 12:56 AM

2 more episodes. Oh Corky.

by Anonymousreply 128May 16, 2016 4:21 AM

Tom Hardy or Aidan Turner would be more convincing as Bond. Hiddleston is too ferret-like, but a hot ferret nonetheless

by Anonymousreply 129May 16, 2016 4:28 AM

WTF is R123 talking about?

by Anonymousreply 130May 16, 2016 4:31 AM

There was a scene in the Night Manager where Roper tells Pine that he is handsome among other attributes. Hiddleston gave him a sightly embarrassed, simpering look. It was very queeny.

by Anonymousreply 131May 16, 2016 11:39 AM

The way he filled out those tailor made pants, was.... so nice.

by Anonymousreply 132May 16, 2016 3:12 PM

R131 That was one of the things that convinced me he's not straight. Amongst many others.

by Anonymousreply 133May 16, 2016 7:48 PM

Hiddleston is definitely gay, in my book.

But why don't we hear more discussion about this? Is he THAT deeply closeted, that there are no rumors about him?

by Anonymousreply 134May 16, 2016 8:04 PM

I don't see much of a bubble butt on him at all. Looks quite average

by Anonymousreply 135May 16, 2016 10:37 PM

R131 and his love scene with the Amazon Blonde was painfully lacking in chemistry.

by Anonymousreply 136May 16, 2016 10:38 PM

Every time he blushed when Roper's character complimented him, I laughed. There was far more chemistry between Hiddleston and Laurie than there was between him and the blonde, even though I'm 99% sure Laurie prefers women.

by Anonymousreply 137May 17, 2016 12:28 AM

R124, probably that actress being 6'2-3/4" adds to the tranny-seeming factor (Christ! that tall is past model-tall and into basketball players, LOL)

by Anonymousreply 138May 17, 2016 12:38 AM

Yes, R138, she was supposed to be this divine female that all men were in love with, but in my experience men don't fall for women who are inches taller than them, or even the same height. TH is tall - they should have found him someone who was about 5' 8'.

by Anonymousreply 139May 17, 2016 1:02 AM

Killing the gay villain. Ever so original. I don't watch shows with Bury Your Gays. Fuck this show and fuck the people how declare this good or acceptable.

by Anonymousreply 140May 17, 2016 6:40 AM

Just watched episode 5. Only one more to go...they show make more!

by Anonymousreply 141May 18, 2016 4:43 AM

Best episode thus far. Mostly because it was so action packed that you didn't have time to appreciate how ridiculous and hamfisted most of it is. Hope they keep this swift pace in ep 6. Also, wonder why the Broadchurch gal took this gig. What a boring, thankless role that could have been played by any no name actress.

by Anonymousreply 142May 18, 2016 7:16 AM

It really was action packed!

Wouldn't Roper have questioned the fact that Pine killed Corky? Even a little bit? I mean, he could've just subdued him instead of killing him. That didn't really make sense.

Also, the gf seems like a liability at this point, and Roper surely would've killed her, if he was the ruthless man that the show has made him out to be.

I have a feeling that the intelligence lady is going to get killed in the end. She knows way too much for the "powers that be" to let her live. The agents from "The River" all seem so evil. To think that we truly have government agents in power (in real life) who are partnered with real life Richard Ropers, is scary.

I don't know how Pine is going to continue fooling Roper, especially in Egypt, where everybody knows him.

by Anonymousreply 143May 18, 2016 3:11 PM

Once Corky was dead, Roper's major concern was to get rid of him.

If you think Roper did not question that death, you must have missed the last few minutes.

If you think Roper brought Pine to Egypt accidentally you weren't paying attention. He brought Pine to the EXACT SAME fucking hotel that Pine used to work at. That was no accident and certainly no coincidence.

Pine's cover is officially blown. Roper totally knows it was Pine that provided the invoice copies to the Brits.

You are right about "the intelligence lady" being endangered. I think the fact that she is pregnant is bound to be important during the last episode.

by Anonymousreply 144May 18, 2016 5:25 PM

I guessed that Roper knew about Pine when he gave him the new identity "Birch" and stressed the C and H, as in Cairo Hotel

by Anonymousreply 145May 18, 2016 6:13 PM

R145 - Yes! Good catch on that. Yeah, clearly he knows (or, at a minimum, deeply suspects that Pine is the 'mole'). I don't think preggers-Broadchurch-gal is getting axed. I don't see this show getting that dark.

by Anonymousreply 146May 18, 2016 10:45 PM

That's interesting, R145.

So he must've been pretty damned upset when Pine killed Corky, although he didn't really show it.

Roper must also know that Pine is fucking his girlfriend, so I wonder why he hasn't killed them both already.

Just couldn't get into this. And I love Olivia Colman. She's doing a really bad Northern accent.

by Anonymousreply 151May 19, 2016 12:49 AM

What's with her constantly calling her husband "Mr. Birch." WTF is this, a Jane Austen novel?

by Anonymousreply 152May 19, 2016 12:50 AM

$68M must include profits. Still that is staggering. Daniel Craig must be loaded and really ready to move on. Next.

by Anonymousreply 153May 19, 2016 1:25 AM

R148 Hiddleston's team have been crawling for that role for him, in spite of his protestations that it's all just rumours and speculation. Good luck to the guy though! He'll be able to retire and stop with the bearding after 4 or 5 Bond films.

by Anonymousreply 154May 19, 2016 1:28 AM

Daniel Craig must be an idiot, R153, to turn down that kind of money.

Most (grateful) actors would do anything to get such a plum role. But he has already proven himself to be an entitled and arrogant asshole, so...

by Anonymousreply 155May 19, 2016 1:28 AM

R154, TH is not gay - what's all this nonsense about 'bearding'? You sound like a Larrie.

R155, Brits don't care as much about money. Once we have a few million, that is fine and we don't do a single thing we don't want to do just to get more. DC has a dodgy leg from filming fight scenes and probably doesn't fancy all the action sequences and being doped up on opiates to get through.

by Anonymousreply 156May 19, 2016 1:33 AM

Oh come one. Now Hiddleston is gay? Please. I recall threads on here about him from years ago from people who went to RADA with himsaying he wasn't gay, just luvvy and effete. This isn't a Cavill situation where I used to see threads about him before I ever knew who the fuck he was, but I sure as hell knew that some actor I had never heard of was gay.

Aside from the gay version of fangurl fanfiction about him with Branagh, I don't recall any thread on here about him being gay. I mean I wouldn't be surprised if he was, but only now that he has more name recognition am I seeing gays coming out of the woodwork to proclaim he's gay. This isn't a Cavill situation, so don't start with this shit where you have no clue about his sexuality.

by Anonymousreply 157May 19, 2016 1:34 AM

on* not "one"

by Anonymousreply 158May 19, 2016 1:34 AM

Hiddleston looks old for 35. He has a scrunched up look between his eyes and might benefit from Botox. Craig had a lot of work done before he attempted Bond. I saw a re-run of Enduring Love and he looked pretty gnarly in it even though it was 12 year ago.

by Anonymousreply 159May 19, 2016 1:37 AM

Is he gay or just British? He would be a switch back to the effete Bond of Pierce Brosnan-- yawn. Can't we get a hairy chested, swarthy Scot or Irish lad to play Bond? In the Connery mode? That would be hot. Hiddleston is a tad to fey for me, but his ass did look nice is those cargo pants.

by Anonymousreply 160May 19, 2016 1:39 AM

Like Aidan Turner, R160.

I think Hiddleston is cute, but I agree about the hairy chest and TH doesn't have that.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 161May 19, 2016 1:44 AM

Hiddleston is not very attractive. He's better on screen than in photos but he is far from leading man material.

If Bond is a modern day Bond then one could do well with a minority actor such as Idris or a handsome Middle Eastern. But they need to be smooth. Smooth and dapper.

by Anonymousreply 162May 19, 2016 1:45 AM

The original script had Olivia Colman's character killed off in the fifth episode. Adjustments had to be made to allow for a possible second season.

by Anonymousreply 163May 19, 2016 2:01 AM

Olivia Colman's character was pretty clunky and would have been killed off had she behaved the way she did.

by Anonymousreply 164May 19, 2016 2:04 AM
Hiddleston is a tad to fey for me, but his ass did look nice is those cargo pants.

by Anonymousreply 174May 25, 2016 5:03 AM

R172: Well.................................................................................................

by Anonymousreply 175May 25, 2016 5:12 AM

That was a very satisfying ending. The woman who played Angela Byrd was the best thing about the show.

I just loved seeing the hot Arab guys in the final episode. In particular, the guy who played Yousef and the guy who played Freddie Hadid. Both very handsome, and they both had a lot of chemistry with Tom Hiddleston. Even more chemistry than TH had with the tall blonde lady.

That scene at Freddie's house was particularly homoerotic. Watching Freddie hanging all over TH, who end up in a nice, big house all alone and drunk. And hearing Freddie say that the house is used for business... and pleasure. That would have been the perfect opportunity for Freddie Hadid and Jonathan Pine to get it on! Making sweet love, by the pool. Damn.

Glad to see that Roper got what he deserved in the end. It was worth sticking with all six episodes.

by Anonymousreply 176May 25, 2016 4:20 PM

Haha R176, I was waiting for Andrew Birch to get down on his knees and start servicing a very drunk Freddie Hamid.
