A Fish Called Wanda

I tried watching this back in the 90's but couldn't get into it. Now I am sick on the couch; we'll see if I can get into it now.

I will say -- Kevin Kline is fucking sexy in his wife-beater in the opening credits.

Opening theme song is odd.

This used to be my favorite movie. Love it.

by Anonymousreply 1April 10, 2016 5:45 PM

It still SUCKS!!

by Anonymousreply 2April 10, 2016 5:45 PM

Kevin Kline stole River Phoenix's Oscar.

by Anonymousreply 3April 10, 2016 5:47 PM

One of the funniest films I've seen. Loved it.

by Anonymousreply 4April 10, 2016 5:49 PM

Well, as a kid I thought it was the most hilarious thing ever, especially Kevin Kline.

by Anonymousreply 5April 10, 2016 5:51 PM

Loved this movie. One of the funniest.

by Anonymousreply 6April 10, 2016 6:03 PM

32 minutes in. No laughs.

by Anonymousreply 7April 10, 2016 6:12 PM

OK. The Kline/Curtis sex scene set against the Cleese/Aitken bedroom scene was funny.

by Anonymousreply 8April 10, 2016 6:21 PM

OK. The kids singing at the funeral is funny.

by Anonymousreply 9April 10, 2016 6:45 PM

Stephen Fry is in the movie, for a second.

by Anonymousreply 10April 10, 2016 7:20 PM

I loved this movie and Kevin was at his finest. I was surprised and pleased he took this role.

by Anonymousreply 11April 10, 2016 7:25 PM

Did all movies in the 80's have a sax solo in the end credits?

Overall - meh. Some laughs but not as hysterical as people say.

by Anonymousreply 12April 10, 2016 7:27 PM

My favorite scene was near the beginning when that poor family stumbles upon John Cleese and Jamie Lee Curtis defiling their home. I love the look on the wife's face seeing that dirty underwear on her family portrait.

"I've worn dresses with higher IQs"

I thought that was a great line, and used it to effect in grade school.

by Anonymousreply 14April 10, 2016 10:14 PM

Yes, R12. It was part of the Hayes office film requirements from 1982-1989. 7 second kisses and a sax solo over the last kiss/crane shot and over credits.

by Anonymousreply 15April 10, 2016 10:16 PM

Why does a sax mean dirty, stinky, slutty?

by Anonymousreply 16April 10, 2016 10:23 PM

Be careful, R16, don't forget Bill Clinton played a sax and played at sex.

by Anonymousreply 17April 10, 2016 10:29 PM

Maybe r17, but now there's a razor for stinky women's armpits and the commercial for it has saxophone music.

by Anonymousreply 18April 10, 2016 10:45 PM

I love this film. Was nice to see a comedy performance get a nomination - and win.

by Anonymousreply 19February 13, 2021 1:33 AM

I never got its appeal. Everyone found it a lot funnier than I did.

by Anonymousreply 20February 13, 2021 1:37 AM

John Cleese and Kevin Kine were both really sexy in this.

by Anonymousreply 21February 13, 2021 1:42 AM

Jamie Lee Curtis' character is a real tramp in this.

by Anonymousreply 22February 13, 2021 1:47 AM

I don’t love the movie but Kevin Kline’s win is so inspired. I love when a genius purely comedic performance wins (not rom/com, or comedy drama, but all out comedic performance). Joan Cusack in In & Out should have been the bookend to this.

by Anonymousreply 23February 13, 2021 1:47 AM

R20- I never found the movie funny either. Baby boomer types LOVED this movie upon it's release in 1988.

by Anonymousreply 24February 13, 2021 1:52 AM

This film makes fun of people who stutter.

John Cleese and Michael Palin should apologize and Kevin Kline should return to his Oscar.

by Anonymousreply 25February 13, 2021 1:59 AM

Michael Palin's father had a stammer. He has lent his name and support to a center to help kids who also have a stammer.

It's quite the dark comedy with all the animals getting killed or eaten alive for laughs.

However, the movie made me realize that getting aroused by someone speaking a foreign language, or in a foreign accent, is a thing. And I experienced that myself with the Scottish accent.

by Anonymousreply 27February 13, 2021 2:51 AM

Didn't you find the crushing to death of the little doggies hilarious?

by Anonymousreply 28February 13, 2021 2:53 AM

I thought it was funny, but it is a dark comedy. And Palin's reaction when the old lady finally croaks is hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 29February 13, 2021 2:55 AM

Even though they used the stammer for jokes, Michael Palin's character got the best of Kevin Kline.

by Anonymousreply 30February 13, 2021 2:55 AM

I cringed, r28, then I laughed. Palin's reactions were wonderful, then that loony reaction when he realizes the old lady finally died.

by Anonymousreply 31February 13, 2021 2:55 AM

I liked Barbara Trentham who played John Cleese's sophisticated but very bitchy wife. Her reaction to finding out he had an affair with Jamie Lee Curtis is very funny.

by Anonymousreply 32February 13, 2021 2:59 AM

The scene between Cleese, Kline, and Trentham upon discovering Kline has broken into their house is hilarious.

“Oh you English are sooooooo superior”

Still a line I use to this day.
