Any fans here? Her new album "The Hope Six Demolition Project" is out in a few weeks. Here is a song from it: The Community Of Hope....
Lissie is much better than this pretentious cunt. Have you listened to her new album, My Wild West? Lissie is natural and melodic, Lissie is the real thing.

Adore PJ!!! Thanks for the link!

'Rid of Me' is one of my absolute favorites of hers - powerful, on the brink, yet simultaneously vulnerable - YES.

Thanks for the reminder, OP. I'd forgotten about this new album and hadn't heard the new song yet. I like it, but the lyrics are very... straightforward, conversational. Are they actually just the words of some of the residents she met in DC, I wonder? There's definitely some similarity in sound to her prior (BRILLIANT) album Let England Shake. Which is kind of unique for her - she seems to shapeshift from album to album. Given how strong Let England Shake was, I don't mind. All that said, I think the first single was far more compelling than this new song which - I think - may be deliberately stark and unemotional to allow the words to shine through.
First single...

What exactly are the similarities between Lissie and PJH? Why compare them?

Ignore him, R5, the Lissie troll posts this inane stuff (usually with an accompanying cat pic) on any thread about a rock/alt/indie female musician. It was KIND OF amusing at first.
Anyway, I decided to look up more on the new single and found a VERY interesting read from the journalist who gave PJ and Seamus (her filmmaker/cinematographer) artistic partner in this project. Apparently, it was a Washington Post journalist who gave them the tour of DC's rougher neighborhoods and it was that tour that eventually became the song and video. As you can imagine, not every DC resident is thrilled with PJ's portrayal of their community...

R6, your flagrant hypocrisy does not interest me at all. I put you on iggy and i suggest you do the same.
R5, it's all a matter of taste. If you like nonsensical lyrics like PJ Harvey's , that's your problem. Only a few songs of Harvey have really something to say. She is mostly pretentious, if you fall for that, it's okay. I don't buy that.
I mentioned Lissie, because i believe she deserves more recognition, although I'm certainly not the only one who has nice things to say about her songs. David Lynch likes her, too. Enough said.

[quote]it's all a matter of taste.
It is all indeed a matter of taste. Fans of PJ Harvey clearly have it in abundance. While those who have none and seem to particularly dislike her often revert to that tired old canard of the brain-dead philistine: "That's so pretentious!"
By the way, you do realize that Lynch often says things tongue-in-cheek. The whole "gee gosh" persona is so studied, but it's surprising when some people take him at his word. Also, your contention that anyone who likes nonsensical lyrics (leaving aside whether or not that's actually true of Harvey's work) has some kind of problem is particularly hilarious given that nonsense has a long and fruitful tradition on the history of verse and song lyrics.
But very best of luck to this Lessie character! I hope she starts getting noticed soon and I look forward to never hearing her no doubt mind-numbingly mediocre songs! :)

Thank you R8. I wouldn't have had the energy.
R7, I was going to boycott Lissie forever, based on your endorsement, but I decided I'd give her a chance because I like music more than the average bromo.
I played the video for "Don't You Give Up On Me". Sounds like a Coldplay song, or a song by any number of middle-of-the-road, minor key-leaning, oonce-oonce bass thumping radio acts.
The lyrics didn't seem noticeably awful, nor did they seem any more meaningful than any PJ Harvey song—but I don't care anyway because the structure of a song and the arrangement and mixing is more important.
You forgot to mention that, in addition to David Lynch, she has also received the endorsement Lenny Kravitz, and she covers Lady Gaga.
Enough said!
Now, back to Polly Harvey.

Never liked her, I would like to be in on it for it I just never understood her appeal.

Really like it, not as good as her 90s stuff but better than England, I'd give it 8/10.

I only like two tracks on the album. It is mostly shit.

I like her, Pocket Knife is one of my faves by her. That said, the video comes across as a bit white saviorish, which always makes me cringe. I’m sure her intentions are good but in this political climate, I feel it’s not her place, especially as a foreigner, to try this.

I loved Polly Jean, and she's a rare artist with multiple masterpiece albums, but I have found her last few albums to be a challenge.
Hope Six was unlistenable. As mentioned above it has the tinge of "white savior" to it. It reminded me of Joni Mitchell writing about Handy and Furry on "Hejira," an otherwise perfect album.

R21 - I found Hope Six a decidedly mixed bag, though I thought the first single was lovely and rather haunting. But Let England Shake was a brilliant album. I was so pleased to see her win her second Mercury Award for it.
