Nancy Reagan was a bitch to her daughter Patti

Since the following article, a summary of her 1992 book, is from the Daily Fail I'll post it here:

How Nancy Reagan's daughter Patti Davis fell for Beach Boy Dennis Wilson but had a tubal ligation fearing she would end up like her mother who popped pills like candy and viciously slapped her face, head and ears. Patti Davis kept constant tabs on Nancy Reagan's pill habit that included Librium, Valium, Miltown and Quaaludes, she revealed in her memoir.

She was seven before she learned that she had two half-siblings. Nancy didn't consider Michael and Maureen part of 'the family' - Reagan's first wife actress Jane Wyman was never to be mentioned.

Nancy was so enraged when she caught Patti eyeing freshly-baked cookies while shopping she was stopped by a policeman for erratic driving. Later, Nancy grabbed Patti by the arm, 'Don't you ignore me, young lady' and then that 'open palm crashes into my cheek.

Nancy was a hoarder who kept clothing she hadn't worn in years, wrapping paper, ribbons, old baskets, cheap vases that once held sent flowers By CAROLINE HOWE FOR DAILYMAIL.COM (continued)

Part 2

In her eulogy for Nancy Reagan last week daughter Patti Davis tearfully admitted that it was no secret that she had a 'contentious relationship' with her mother. That was a massive understatement. And Patti told just how difficult it was was in her 1992 autobiography. The First Lady was a 'mommy dearest' who popped sedatives like candy and started viciously slapping Patti around - in the face, head and ears - at age eight - a practice that continued that daily for years, Patti claimed.

Nancy told her husband Ronald Reagan that Patti was so bad she was killing her. Nancy would feign illness to get attention and sympathy from her husband. She bought Patti ugly clothing, little Bo-Peep dresses that Patti hated, cut her hair short as soon as it grazed her cheek and spewed a constant stream of criticism.

The firestorms were so severe that at age twenty-four, Patti had a tubal ligation so that she could never duplicate raising a child the way Nancy had raised her.

Mommy dearest: Nancy Reagan popped sedatives like candy and started viciously slapping Patti around - in the face, head and ears - at age eight - a practice that continued that daily for years, Patti claimed in her autobiography. When Patti sought comfort from her father, Reagan turned a blind eye blind to Nancy's cycle of anger and attributed it to' that time of the month'. 'I wondered how my father could be so blind to the fact that there wasn't just one time of the month. It was every day, every week, all year. All my life,' Patti writes in The Way I See It, published by G.P. Putnam's Sons. (continued)

Part 3

Understanding Nancy's rage was difficult because Nancy reinvented her own history constantly. Nancy's own father had walked out on her mother and the two went to live with cousins in Bethesda, Maryland, where Nancy had no room of her own. When her grandmother remarried, Nancy waited ten years for her stepfather to adopt her – having to prove her love.

She was overweight through college and had a less than stellar career on screen in Hollywood. But she had created 'a veneer of total confidence, total control perhaps to hide what was within' – a firestorm of anger.

That violence erupted when Patti was born. Nancy had hoped for a boy. Ron Jr. would be born five years later, but Nancy would never let Patti hold her little brother and she had to sneak into his room at night to look at him, listen to his breathing, and smell his baby smell.

Patti was seven before she learned that there were two children from Ronald's first marriage with Jane Wyman – Michael and Maureen. They were 'half-brother' and 'half-sister' and the name Jane Wyman was never to be mentioned.

When Michael visited on the weekend, he slept on the couch and left his duffel bag of clothing in the powder room. Nancy didn't consider them part of 'the family'. There was no laughter or the sound of children's tiny stampeding feet in their home. (continued.)

by Anonymousreply 2March 16, 2016 10:26 AM

Part 4

. . . in the Pacific Palisades when Patti and Ron Jr. were growing up. There was only 'the sound of a raised voice crashing through the rooms', the voice of Nancy.

In his silence, her father was part of the emptiness. Reagan was on the road four and five days a week working for General Electric and he didn't want to be bothered with what was going on at home.

When Nancy took Patti to the Brentwood Country Market where she frequently shopped, Nancy raged when Patti was caught looking at the freshly baked cookies. She railed at the nine-year-old on the drive home, was stopped by a policeman for erratic driving, and Nancy blamed it on her bad little girl. '[Her] open palm crashes into my cheek. The numbness starts at the corner of my mouth and travels up to my eye. Getting off without a ticket, Nancy grabbed Patti by the arm, 'Don't you ignore me, young lady', and that 'open palm crashes into my cheek'. 'The numbness starts at the corner of my mouth and travels up to my eye'. Back at home, 'I run into my room, shut the door, and pull the arms and legs off one of my dolls'. (continued)

by Anonymousreply 4March 16, 2016 10:31 AM

R4, Several posters asked about the conflict between Nancy Reagan and Patti. What's most relevant is two-faced Nancy made a big deal about being anti-drug and she was addicted and daily took quaaludes, as well as other milder prescription drugs. If anyone else is interested I'll continue.

There were no doors that locked in the house except for her parent's bedroom door. There was no privacy. Nancy opened drawers and closets, looked through everything the children had, listened in on the phone. Nightly, Nancy entered the bathroom when Patti was putting toothpaste on her toothbrush, grabbed it out of her hand and demanded she go to the bathroom first. Patti didn't have to go. 'Well, we'll just stay here until you do.. When Nancy took her hand off Patti's arm, she drew it back and slapped her face – leaving that familiar reddened hand print.

Sobbing in her room when Nancy wouldn't let Patti's hair grow below her ears, Reagan came in and asked, 'Why do you do this to your mother, Patti? 'All she wants is to have a nice time with you, and every time you go out. Reagan insisted Nancy was never mean and that she never slapped Patti.

But one of Reagan's financial backers, Holmes Tuttle witnessed Nancy's vicious blows on the little girl's head and ears and told her to never do that again in front of him.

‘All my life I’d been terrified that, if I had a child of my own, I would become my mother; I would see my own childhood repeated." If he told Ronnie, it had no impact. The abuse continued.

by Anonymousreply 5March 16, 2016 10:34 AM

Ronald Reagan must have been deaf, dumb and blind not to see through that thin veneer of sweetness. I could never figure that out because Nancy always displayed a shrill, high-strung and passive -aggressive behaviour towards her kids.

This list could have been written with Nancy Reagan in mind:

Psychopathic Traits:

•Fearless and Confident.

•Charming and Charismatic.

•Ruthless and Focused.

•Immunity to Anxiety and Depression.

•Risk-Taking and Reward-driven. Punishment has little effect on them.

•Risk addiction. Constantly trying to “re-live the first hit” of risk, just like a drug addict.

•Often taken to delusions of grandeur and big, important ideas.

•Can tell the boldest of lies with a straight face.

•Easily bounce back from failure, rejection, and criticism, demonstrating renewed confidence.

•Psychopaths “get on a roll” by starting out with small actions, and become increasingly more bold as they get away with things.

•They fall in love with ideas, rather than people.

•Studies have shown them to have dream brainwaves during waking hours. Their imagination is always running wild.

•They easily read the emotions of others. They have been shown in studies to be more sensitive to small, subtle vocal and behavioral cues. They almost always know when others are lying.

•Psychopaths understand the mechanics of emotions, but they do not empathize with the emotion itself.

•Normal people, through empathy, assume the emotional state of the group. The psychopath does not, though he may fake it to fit in.

•They often describe their actions as arising from a need to rebel against the typical human life.

Patti also blames her drug use on the problems. Nancy Reagan must be very forgiving since Patti wrote a two horrible tell-all books that ripped Nancy apart.

To show Nancy was able to forgive and forget after that, shows Nancy wanted to reconcile.

And you need to apologize for making a mistake like that.

by Anonymousreply 23March 16, 2016 3:46 PM

Didn't the Blow Job Queen Of Hollywood come to respect and even like her stepdaughter,Maureen, when she worked for The Raygun Administration. She liked the fact that she was so damn loyal to Ronnie, more than her own daughter was. Adopted children usually have an undying loyalty to their adoptive parents. Whereas Patti was so dysfunctional with The Blow Job Queen of Hollywood.

Michael also seemed found of Nancy though he didn't show up at her funeral. His kids even called TBJQOH grandma! Wow ,Jane Wyman must be rolling in her grave right now.

by Anonymousreply 34March 16, 2016 4:18 PM

r24 Adopted children usually have an undying loyalty to their adoptive parents.

Just to clarify: Maureen Reagan was the NATURAL daughter of Jane Wyman and Ronald Reagan. Michael was adopted by Reagan and Jane Wyman.

by Anonymousreply 35March 16, 2016 4:27 PM

In the second term Maureen was actually living in the White House. Due to her excellent campaigning skills, she gained Nancy respect after years of ignoring her.

by Anonymousreply 36March 16, 2016 4:31 PM

Back to Nancy, WHY wouldn't she let Jane Wyman's name be mentioned in her household? Did she think it was possible to completely block another's existence? What did Wyman do to her husband, or is it just because Nancy was the replacement?

Also telling she bullied top designers into giving her their clothes for free rather than paying for them herself. All other First Ladies chose to buy the garments.

Wonder what would have happened if the internet existed back then as most Americans were in the dark about candidate's real character. Shows Ronnie unable to confront the truth about anything that wasn't pleasant and positive, so we can't blame everything on his old age and alzheimer's. (sp) So the real powerhouse in the Reagan Administration was Nancy's psychic?

by Anonymousreply 37March 16, 2016 4:33 PM
Back to Nancy, WHY wouldn't she let Jane Wyman's name be mentioned in her household?

She was insecure. Remember Jane was A-list and Nancy was C-list.

by Anonymousreply 38March 16, 2016 4:35 PM
Ronald Reagan must have been deaf, dumb and blind not to see through that thin veneer of sweetness. I could never figure that out because Nancy always displayed a shrill, high-strung and passive -aggressive behaviour towards her kids.

He was probably even more afraid of Nancy than the kids were. He knew she was vicious, but if he wanted to run for president he couldn't afford a second divorce, so he placated her. It's commonplace when one of the parents abuses the children -- the other tries to make the kids change their behavior rather than deal with the problem.

R34, more like CHECKED into a detox!

by Anonymousreply 40March 16, 2016 5:06 PM
Back to Nancy, WHY wouldn't she let Jane Wyman's name be mentioned in her household? Did she think it was possible to completely block another's existence? What did Wyman do to her husband, or is it just because Nancy was the replacement?

It's not that uncommon for second wives to resent any reminder that their husband was once married to someone else. I know a woman who refers to her young stepchildren as her husband's "previous children". No wonder there are so many fucked-up people out there.

With all the vicious face-slapping, Nancy was truly a woman after DL's own heart. I wonder how frequently she stated her boundaries.

by Anonymousreply 45March 16, 2016 5:21 PM

Maureen was not adopted. Michael was. He's the one who wrote that he allowed himself to be molested as a boy because Ronald Reagan ignored him and he so desperately needed a father figure.

The Reagans were mean parents and their children returned the favor. I too wonder how they would have fared in the internet age. Although no one minds what Trump is doing, so maybe just fine.

by Anonymousreply 46March 16, 2016 5:22 PM

Who is Christine Reagan mentioned on Jane's page?

by Anonymousreply 47March 16, 2016 5:31 PM

R46, so Michael sold his own ass to a pedo. I know a guy who had to do this because of fucked up parents and he'll never recover. Psychopath. It's gotta be harder on Michael being adopted because he must imagine that there were other, better families in line to adopt him but were turned down. Ouch. Gotta feel for him. Being adopted not always but usually means you've hit the lottery. Sorry for him.

by Anonymousreply 48March 16, 2016 5:38 PM

In what is meant to be an endearing anecdote by Patti of Nancy, she admits her mother knew she was dating her high school English teacher. Nancy knew but said nothing!

by Anonymousreply 49March 16, 2016 5:41 PM

The stamp of an angry, hurt childhood shone through Nancy's eyes. Some misinterpreted it for kindness.

by Anonymousreply 50March 16, 2016 5:42 PM

R41, That's not true. Nancy's real father died when she was young. Her mother moved in with her aunt and Nancy had to share a bedroom as they were now cramped for space. Then her mother remarried. It took years for her step-father to accept her.

by Anonymousreply 51March 16, 2016 5:43 PM

So she was determined never to accept her own step-children, R51?

by Anonymousreply 52March 16, 2016 5:46 PM

r51 Nancy's real father died when she was young. Wrong! He abandoned Nancy and her mother, and they later divorced.

Nancy's father: Kenneth Seymour Robbins (1894–1972)

by Anonymousreply 53March 16, 2016 5:46 PM

R49, Since Patty went to an expensive private school in AZ how would a student dating a teacher be considered acceptable by the administrators?

Yes many men grew up with the idea that as long as they worked hard and were good providers that's all they needed to do. Generations produced men that spoke very little at home perhaps due to constant fatigue. They came home from a stressful day at the office and had a drink. Unless they had a very physical job men didn't exercise. No wonder they often died at a relatively young age.

There's no mention in the Daily Fail summary of the 1992 book of church attendance. Sometimes in well-run churches elders or Sunday School teachers get involved where there's obvious signs of abuse or at least provide a father figure and an illusion of a solid family. Note that I said "some."

by Anonymousreply 54March 16, 2016 5:53 PM

I wonder if she saved all her wrath for Patti or if she slapped Ron Jr. around as well. I have always liked him, and he seems to have turned out a little more stable than Patti.

by Anonymousreply 55March 16, 2016 5:53 PM

R53, Thanks for your correction as I was relying on what the Daily Fail wrote as I haven't read Patty's book. Are you saying Patti never saw her real father again after he left Nancy? Are any reasons given for the divorce?

by Anonymousreply 56March 16, 2016 5:55 PM

R55, The summary on the Daily Fail says Nancy wanted a son and not a daughter. Ron Jr was born about 7 years later. He got many more gifts for Christmas and Nancy tried harder to buy him what he really wanted. Since he clearly was the favored child I'm sure he wasn't treated as harshly. Don't know if he was sent away to a boarding school.

by Anonymousreply 57March 16, 2016 5:57 PM

Nancy put Ron Jr. in the cheapest suit she could find for this portrait. He's wearing an ill fitted suit with 'flood' pants. She only gave a shit about herself.

r53 Thanks for your correction as I was relying on what the Daily Fail wrote as I haven't read Patty's book. Are you saying Patti never saw her real father again after he left Nancy? Are any reasons given for the divorce?

You're confusing Patti with Nancy. I think Nancy had very little contact with her father after her parents divorced.

by Anonymousreply 59March 16, 2016 6:01 PM

by Anonymousreply 61March 16, 2016 6:06 PM

Thanks for setting it straight R53. Of course she was abandoned. Twice!

by Anonymousreply 62March 16, 2016 6:08 PM

r62 Yes, I'm sure that contributed greatly to her fucked up personality.

by Anonymousreply 63March 16, 2016 6:09 PM

Off topic: Anyone notice Patti's awful facial surgery? Her facial muscles look sunken and puffed up in other places - like she's in a weird wind machine tunnel. If that's her natural look, then something is clearly wrong with her health.

Back to Ron Jr, his 'clown-like" demeanor at the funeral was creepy. Like he was auditioning for a show. He smiled in all the wrong places and looked he had trowelled on a thick layer of plastic to his personality. Brrr.......creepy.

by Anonymousreply 64March 16, 2016 6:11 PM

R58, holy shit! Even outwardly trashy parents would never! At least they'd hide the flood pants behind the coffee table! Nancy is burning in hell as we speak. What a horrible, damaged human being she was. Thank God OUR taxes aren't paying for her security detail. Good riddance, ya flake!

by Anonymousreply 65March 16, 2016 6:14 PM

It was apparent from the funeral addresses that both kids did not have a good relationship with their mother. Patti tried to be positive and Ron Jr delivered his speech like a comedy act, but neither could keep out cutting little references to Nancy's coldness, bitchiness and control freakery.

Sad, they are older now but still unhappy about it. When my grandmother was very old and deteriorating just before her death she would burst into tears about her father's being mean to her (and it was very mean) back when she was 12. Disappointment in a parent cuts very deep and can last a whole life long.

by Anonymousreply 66March 16, 2016 6:16 PM

So Reagan fell for girls with big soulless eyes who were abandoned in childhood. Wonder what his childhood was like. Off to see. Help me fill in the blanks. I do recall he was a right loser right up until 40 years of age.

by Anonymousreply 67March 16, 2016 6:19 PM

Personally, I think more people should pop sedatives like candy. Instead, they pop candy like candy and weigh 300 lbs.

by Anonymousreply 68March 16, 2016 6:20 PM

I'll always remember the line from Back To The Future. Who is the President? When Foxx replies "Ronald Reagan" the inquirer laughs and says "The actor?!". So telling. Hold onto your dreams, Americans. Anything can happen here.

by Anonymousreply 69March 16, 2016 6:43 PM

Wise comment r67. Reagan wasn't a total dummy. We now know today that even passive-aggressive behaviour is tantamount to being complicit in bullying.

I never for one second bought into his "All-American" "Happy-go-lucky" schtick - He was probably just as good.

by Anonymousreply 70March 16, 2016 6:58 PM

Reagan wanted a woman to adore him and hold him in awe. Neither of them cared too much about the children. It was about the two of them and Nancy adoring him and holding him in awe. But he probably wanted his own bio son and Nancy was probably longing to do that for him so Patti was a disappointment. As long as Reagan was alive Nancy had no need for her children. After he died she needed them and Patti probably always wanted her love and she was the one that took care of Nancy. Ron was treated a bit better and had his own life and no need to cling to his mom in her later years.

by Anonymousreply 71March 16, 2016 7:20 PM
Personally, I think more people should pop sedatives like candy.

Poor Patti. There's never justice when a parent is abusive. Justice meaning that the parent eventually acknowledges it and says they are sorry. The abused child is always the bad guy.

by Anonymousreply 73March 16, 2016 8:38 PM

bump

by Anonymousreply 74March 16, 2016 9:09 PM

Personality disorders aside, a husband is EVERYTHING to a woman like Nancy. Her self-esteem is based on landing him and keeping him, he is her career in both the old and moders senses of the word, his career is hers and she's totally wrapped up in making him into what she wants him to be.

Such man-centric women will have children if her man wants it or it's a way to get that ring on her finger, but she never cares about them too much, and typically finds they become inconvenient as they grow up. They're rivals for her husband's attention and take time away from being with him or managing him, or disappointments.

And of course if such a woman has "a past", she'll suspect her daughters of becoming the sort of whore she used to be, and treat them like dirt long before they have a clue about sex.

Ronnie was asked about his 1st marriage before he won the election and he said "I was divorced and didn't want to be." Now I wonder how that sat with Nancy - this was almost 30 years after it happened.

I heard Nancy and Jane made up before Maureen died. I hope that's true. How silly to let those lingering family feuds continue.

Jane in a nun's habit? She had become uber Catholic. Remember Father Bob on Falcon Crest? He was her true pastor in LA.

Add to the fact that Jane was close to Michael and Maureen, while Nancy was distant with Patti and Ron Jr. It was Nancy's turn to shine and take the spotlight in the '80s, but along came Jane whose career experienced a renaissance in the '80s to steal a bit of Nancy's thunder.

Ron only married Nancy because she was pregnant.

r84 Not perfect? Perfectly evil.

by Anonymousreply 91March 17, 2016 12:53 PM

What's the story with Nancy being a whore?

by Anonymousreply 92March 17, 2016 1:46 PM

r92 According to Kitty Kelley's biography, Nancy Reagan "was renowned in Hollywood for performing oral sex." Just-say-yes Nancy--in the days

by Anonymousreply 93March 17, 2016 1:49 PM

Why did Nancy refuse to get treatment for her "good friend" Rock Hudson when he was dying? Was she that cold, or did she not want to be seen as extending special consideration to their Hollywood friends?

by Anonymousreply 94March 17, 2016 1:53 PM

According to Kitty Kelly's bio, Nancy's hatred for her daughter began when Patti was in utero. When Nancy went into one of her meltdowns berating Patti, she told Patti that as a fetus, she grabbed onto her rib and pulled, causing Nancy agony. Apparently, this also made childbirth difficult because that baby was clinging onto the rib for dear life. I am not making this up. Talk about a mother projecting!

Thanks, R93.

by Anonymousreply 96March 17, 2016 2:18 PM

What does Patti do now?

by Anonymousreply 97March 18, 2016 9:26 PM

She grabs ribs.

by Anonymousreply 98March 18, 2016 10:21 PM

She clips coupons while waiting for the will to be read.

"I don't understand why a big strapping girl like Maureen Reagan is still living in The White House."

Not as big as me

Must have been sweeps week.

Slightly off topic, but Jane Wyman was one of the most sexless leading ladies from Old Hollywood. Runner up is Olivia de Havilland.

The Kitty Kelley book relays how the Reagans had a party planned for an evening and then the day of the party was when JFK was shot and confirmed dead. Nancy insisted the party go ahead anyway and bullied some guests into coming, then was furious when they cried.

Seriously it sounds like Nancy might have had borderline personality disorder with narcissistic features. What a nightmare. I truly have compassion for children raised by these types of women.

by Anonymousreply 105January 4, 2018 12:30 AM

Nancy was a true cunt. That’s for sure.

by Anonymousreply 106January 4, 2018 1:20 AM

One of the most entertainingly trashy books ever

Nancy Reagan is supposed to have cheated on Ronnie with Frank Sinatra !!!??? What my God I never heard that rumour.

by Anonymousreply 109January 4, 2018 1:55 AM

Nancy had one great talent...sucking cocks, especially for powerful men

You think she just gave that up when she got married?

P.S.

She may have lost the weight but she always had the legs of a fattie - Jackie Kennedy. Off the Record

Why did Jane divorce him? Could she just not stand him anymore?

That worked in [italic]Pollyanna[/italic] where she was basically playing Nancy Reagan.

Yeah, that broad looked uptight

But she could suck the dimes out of a parking meter...

Jeez, what a technique

But why would Frank Sinatra want to have sexual relations with Nancy Reagan?

by Anonymousreply 114January 4, 2018 2:58 AM

Because the lady is a tramp

by Anonymousreply 115January 4, 2018 3:00 AM

Her use of astrology during Reagan's presidency, and later her insatiable thirst for OJ Simpson gossip from Dominic Dunn made her a strange, uninteresting person to me.

by Anonymousreply 116January 4, 2018 3:07 AM
her insatiable thirst for OJ Simpson

That's was always the way with Nancy....

She never wanted anyone to know what a Freak she was between the sheets
