Come on, OP, it's not that hard. They're serving a niche market. But in that venn diagram of men attracted to men and men attracted to trans women or trans men there is a teeeeeeny tiiiiiny bit of overlap and that's what they're looking for. And, let's be honest, they're more likely to find men open to or interested in them than they would on a predominantly heteronormative app or site.

I've been approached occasionally by a trans man or trans woman on those apps and I politely decline them and that's that. It's not that difficult.

Now, if you're traveling - say to India, Thailand, The Philippines - that's a different story. There are a lot of trans women in sex work who use these apps as their... distribution platform which can quickly get old. Get ready to use that block function!

Trans chasers tend to identify as "straight" and wouldn't be on Grindr anyway. Weird.

I go on breaks from these apps and almost never actually actively seek sex on them (though its happened over the several years). It was really weird this year installing Grindr again and seeing so many trans-women (and stuff like sissyboys or whatever, as well) on there. I don't recall this being the case last year, and definitely not before that. The early 2010s Grindr was faceless torsos and mid 2010s was that and more out gays.

The obvious answers do seem to be things like Craigslist pushing this sort out and Grindr seeming like the increasingly useful alternative.

The conspiratorial crazy answers in my head is that Grindr is playing inter-sectional politics with the gays, pushing them out, attracting more straight(ish/closeted/fetishing/etc) guys, and ultimately will push for straight women and get mainstream dollars instead, goodbye gay men (mostly).

My real opinion is both. Grindr's current ownership wants maximum profit no matter what the app becomes, and so its the focal point of arrivals like trans-women and their admirers.

The good news is that other gay-focused apps exist and may always. Grindr is just a tool and often a shitty one.

I took a couple of years off from Grindr. Rejoined and I've been pretty aggressive in my profile that I have no interest in women/vaginas/drag/trans. I have a good sense of who I'd attract, generally. I agree with the comments about the politics of Grindr, but it's working in my favor: I'm getting a lot of married men, bi, horny bottoms. Perhaps the SJW bullshit pisses of men more than the Chinese masters know or I'll get banned for my non conformity with social correctness. I don't know. But right now - my battery dies about half way through the day if I don't recharge.

There's nothing subtle in my profile. It's even more aggressive than my Scruff profile was and that was borderline "3 am Leather Bar".
