I binged season 2 of Happy Valley on Netflix last night. It had at least one major sour note but the rest was pure bliss.
I watched season 2 of Bosch the night before last.
[quote]There are a couple of former actors from The Wire on the show as well.
Titus Welliver is adequate in a role that doesn't have much range and could be played by any number of other actors, but Lance Reddick and the other non-leads make Bosch worth watching.

R31, I've read that Connelly wanted Billy Burke and he would have been good. There are so many good choices, but I think Clive Owen is one who would have fit the role. I picture Tim Olyphant when I read the books. I definitely imagined someone who was better looking than Titus Welliver and could actually move his face.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | March 18, 2016 9:33 PM |
If you literally mean "the last show you watched," it would be today's episode of Judge Jewdy.
If you mean the last show I was invested in, it would be Impastor, starring the studly Michael Rosenbaum, and Hardcore Pawn, featuring the Gold family of pawnbrokers in Detroit. Alas, Hardcore Pawn seems to be no more, and I'm waiting for the return of Impastor.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | March 18, 2016 9:34 PM |
R36, I would probably have liked Billy Burke, too, though I find him too good-looking to play Harry Bosch. Bosch isn't a character who's gotten by on his looks, while Billy Burke is, well, just the opposite of that. I like the suggestion of Clive Owen, and I'm not that familiar with Olyphant. I know who he is, but not much more.
I started reading the books when they first came out, 1992. Harry was supposed to have been born in 1950, so I've always pictured someone age appropriate, e.g., Michael McKeen, Michael O'Keefe, and especially, Robert Clohessy.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | March 18, 2016 9:50 PM |
R38, I could see O'Keefe and Clohessy but not McKeen. I read a site ages ago that suggested Kyle Chandler. I didn't outright reject that idea and I'm still mulling it one over in my mind along with Kevin Bacon.

Just finished watching season two of The Knick. I only watched watched the pilot from season one when it first aired but I had no problems getting in when I started watching season two last week. This is a gorgeous show. Beautifully made and so nicely balanced.
I'm glad Steven Soderberg made the move to television. I never really liked his films but he really shines here. He apparently wants to do six seasons of The Knick and talked about making the show in two season blocks, which means we're possibly going to get something different next fall.

This morning - The Today Show. Rossen Reports did a story about how much liquid beverage you actually get in a Starbucks Grande Latte. Turns out, of the 5 or 6 stores he went to, none gave the advertised (?) amount of 16 ozs. Two were close but the others were waaay under; one was at about 12 ozs. They reached out to Starbucks which gave their usual crap response and added, "if you're not happy with your beverage, we'd be more than happy to serve you a new one."
Last night - Quantico but I fell asleep before the episode ended.

I like Outlander too and Poldark and no, not a frau. But the best series on is an Australian one, A PLACE TO CALL HOME. Some PBS stations show it; ACORN has it. Great writing and some oof the best acting you will ever see PLUS some very handsome men and one of the storylines is about a gay young man...set in 1952, so you can imagine what he went through. Try it.

Maybe if it were more of an ensemble than a Hayley Atwell starrer, it would have drawn more of an audience. Her "Me! Me! Me!" antics are the only thing I don't like about the show. I wish they hadn't hired the First Daughter, and gone with whichever Ashmore was supposed to get the job. He's like a ghost on this show, and I'd so much rather he were the center of attention (particularly if he and Eddie Cahill were having a thing).

It's Howdy Doody Time, 1951 or 52. I was quite young but I didn't like the violence and wrote off watching TV after that. Someone must have beat up Clarabell pretty bad because he couldn't speak and only honked his horn when he attempted to communicate. What a horror.

HOWEVER, this is one of those shows where the main character (s) is a nasty misanthrope. It's like Portlandia. Many other shows. Curb your enthusiasm. Crazy ex. etc. TRANSPARENT in a major way.

I'm canceling cable in favor of our local theater's "Film Society Club." Cheaper and more entertaining with excellent selections several times a week. Always a familiar and enthusiastic crowd. I never feel alone gping by myself. There's booze and food if I want. Still cheaper than monthly cable.
I'm bored to death with TV. News has become entertainment at this point.
I've gone without TV before. Theater movies take on a whole new viewing experience. The run of the mill movies rarely interest me. Thank goodness for the Club movies.

Just burned through all 6 hours of Costner's HATFIELDS & MCCOYS in one day.
It's old hat now (came out over 5 years ago on the damn History Channel) and it got critically torn apart on release, but in retrospect it's enormously captivating for a long pulpy period piece. It's not art and it's not even a great dramatic tale - pure silly soap-opera if you think too hard - but it's a Costner Western so it doesn't have to be. I was gasping, grinning, biting my fingers and leaning forward in my seat throughout the series and as a viewer I am typically very hard to please. I'll probably watch it at least once more through on another rainy weekend, or even get myself the Bluray just for the gorgeous cinematography.
Also, those young Hatfield brothers sure were nice to look at in the Virginia sunlight. And Mare Winningham's acting is a dream.

I also find Poldark surprisingly dull, R500. (I'd enjoyed the 70s version, if memory serves.) I can't tell if it's the script or the direction (each scene lasts about 30 seconds; people are always meeting by sheer coincidence on lonely, windswept paths and beaches; characters apparently fly to and from houses that are miles apart, they get there so quickly; etc.) That said, the show looks spectacular, both in the natural scenery of Cornwall and several of the male actors. If those actors just rode around on horseback with their shirts open to the navel surely everyone would be happy. (Poldark Drinking Game: Drink a shot each time someone rides or walks along a windy cliff, beach or moor. You'll be hammered by the midway point.)

Father Brown > The Durrells of Corfu > Poldark > The Collection.
The acting is weak on this version of Poldark. The original Geo Warleggen was mean but he had a couple of surprising good points (which I forget now, but he wasn't a cardboard villain). This one is petulant.

Will & Grace. I may have to give up this reboot. The Christmas episode was... Not Good. (And Megan M's Irish accent was worse!)

"Marcella" - when British television tries to create a dark Nordic thriller and does a pretty good job of it. Not that surprising since the show was written by the Swede who created "The Bridge". I really liked Anna Friel in it.

Netflix show called Dark. Wasn't bad. Takes place in Germany and has time travel and missing kids and such. Also has Many characters so you have to pay attention. I give it 7.5 out of 10

And I also just started. parks and Recreation. I wanted something easy and funny to watch and so far it's a solid choice. Chris Pratt's Andy makes the funniest reaction faces.

Red Oaks on Amazon Prime. Tom Hollandesque star Craig Roberts could not be one bit more adorable as David Meyers; Richard Kind is particularly good as David's father, Sam.

"Doctor Foster." One of the best "scorned woman exacts revenge" things I've seen. The ending was kind of heartbreaking, though. It took me a couple of episodes to figure out where I'd seen Suranne Jones before. It occurred to me that she was on Coronation Street some 10-15 years ago. I had no idea she was such a good actress.

"Witnesses" (Les Témoins), a French dark crime drama, in the vein of Nordic noir. I was surprised how good it was: often unsettling, gripping, and really well acted. Season 2 is *very* sinister. It's on Netflix.

Just watched seasons one and two of The Path on Hulu and am watching season three episodes as there are released. It’s about a new agey cult. First two seasons were pretty great but seriously jumping the shark but I’ll keep watching because of my crush on Mr. Hugh Dancy.

Just watching Hotel Beau Séjour, a Belgian crime drama on Netflix. Apparently, Belgium is the new Scandinavia - some great stuff coming from there. I'm not going to spoil it for those who want to watch it but, again, it's a pretty dark crime show with one supernatural twist which doesn't distract from the main murder mystery.

Scandal. Just waiting for the finale to see who kills whom.
by Anonymous | reply 566 | January 25, 2018 3:07 AM |
It’s a very different show in Season 3. The first 10 minutes of the first episode have two “you’ve gotta be kidding me” violent events. The Meyerists despite being nearly broke in season two are now inexplicably flush with funds to build a modern new HQ in Brooklyn and less than a year has gone by (going by the age of Cal’s kid). And then there is the S&M. It’s a crazy soap now where I think it was a more thoughtful show before.
