I've met some southerners that are the real deal - and I've met some northerners that are self entitled assholes. You get out of it what you put into it.

I had to live amongst them for 28 years, R4. I met some nice ones, and some not-nice ones, but the ones who weren't nice were so awful, I still can feel the scars of what they did to this day. That's why I got out as soon as I got the opportunity.

Well, I'm in the South (Houston) and people are the same as everywhere else. Some nice, some assholes but the South has been having a steady influx of people moving from other states for jobs so you can't really tell who your dealing with anymore and not every Southerner has a broad Paula Deen-ish accent.

Nevertheless, when all had been said and done, the sexual predators that composed her family were given relatively light sentences, and the children were swept away in the whirlwind of foster care as quickly as the province could get rid of them, most of them scarred for life and unable to pick up the pieces. In the end, they were just Mountain folk; what could you do?

The book ends with Donna going back to the mountain to face her past. I think my favorite part is when she flips off her father, and then he and her uncle Cranswick chase her and her friend down Deep Hollow road in a dramatic car chase. I don't know how true the story is, but I'm assuming it's pretty near reality. It's an incredibly horrifying, sad story, and there's no real happy end to it, but it's well told and well worth the read.

R47, jobs, the economy, family. The same reasons many people pick a particular city. Houston is ethnically diverse and has a great food and restaurant scene. Housing is affordable and I have tons of family here and we are a close-knit family. Summers suck but the winters and springs make up for it. The city is spread out and that can cause mobility problems but you deal with it and adapt like everything else. Tons of things to do on day trips too.

I moved to the south after living in the north all my life. I think they appear this way, because the culture chose social skills over intellectualism whenever the south was born. I am appalled at how mediocre everything is, including skills, but politeness and friendliness are highly valued. When I moved here, I was misled by the apparent friendliness. Obviously I can't mention the name because it's quite recognizable, but my family is just as "borne of the plantation" southern as you will find in Atlanta. If not, then explain the huge range in phenotypes, and why so many Gentiles wound up with Jewish ancestry. In my experience dealing with New York advertising agencies, the "fake nice" exhibited by those working on our corporate account only lasted as long as the millions in budget dollars kept growing.

People in the North consider people with a Southern accent as less intelligent, which makes it far easier to make fools of them. Pretending to be dumb, forcing people to explain details that they should know while remaining ostensibly ignorant, is a great negotiating tactic, and exaggerating my accent was a small price to pay.

My family is from New Jersey and I grew up in Houston Texas. Everyone persecuted me because I didn't talk like them, or on their pace. They look at me like I'm a foreigner. I was just a little girl and they treated me like I'm from another planet. They like to act superior and better than everyone. And if you don't have the same opinion as they do. There is no difference of opinion with them. To them it's either your an unintelligent person who doesn't know anything,or it's an offense. Unfortunately with them there is no middle ground. Believe me I've tried really hard to find one. They are stubborn in their own primitive ways. I've also traveled through out the South naively thinking, that it would be different .Also I wasn't expecting for the other southerner states to be the same. But to my surprise they are, And to my horror, they treated me just as bad. My best friends mother is from Texas, but she was sweet; and would always comment on other Texan's hate for one another, racism, segregation, antisocial acts against society, and the environment. My friend was raised in Nevada though. And we are still close. Well my friend and I couldn't believe her mom, because we wanted to believe the best in people. So we naively thought maybe the people in our neighborhood were just ignorant and jealous. But through time we have traveled and have been met with the same outcome in other parts of the southern states.

Some southerners are nice but unfortunately, they are really hard to come by. Like my best friends mother, who's been great. But unfortunately, I haven't met very many that were like her; given my experience of being abused by most of them. It's different with non southerner states and other countries. They treat me with fairness and they are mostly non judgemental. And many people that are from other places tell me that I am charming, kind, smart, eccentric, and a people person. But in Houston Texas, and other southerner states; I get treated like I am guilty of treason, like I am on trial. They think they have evolved but they can never accept people, who are different from them. In other words you have to act like them, and think like them, or they won't accept you.

Why is someone trash talking the Jewish people. Why are they bringing attacks against italian, and german people also. I agree this thread is supposed to be about the fued about; how most southerners mistreat outsiders. Btw I'm part italian on my father's side. And stereotypes against Jewish, Italian, and Germans.
