Bring out your dark glasses, Bubba is going to Hawaii and his paleness will blind you if you're not prepared!

Will Iola?

Vickie Lawrence and Carol Burnett appeared on Password Plus in character in 1980, competing against two characters from Hello Larry.

They never really explained why Thelma and Morty couldn't get back together after she found out his true identity. And the JAP from New Jersey girlfriend that Bubba found reminded me of the Donna Chang(stein) story on "Seinfeld."
by Anonymous | reply 6 | February 27, 2016 5:18 AM |
Goddamn, Bubba in all his pasty, shirtless, redheaded glory got me very excited.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | February 29, 2016 5:56 PM |
Tonight: Bubba makes a movie of the family. Iola and Mama get into a squabble over who has the best roses.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | March 1, 2016 4:48 PM |
I would have bet money that Iola's niece was played by a very young Renee Zellweger.
And I'd have lost that money.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | March 1, 2016 5:08 PM |
Iona's niece was another piece of inspired casting. You'd likely never see that actress anywhere else but she fit perfectly in the show. Also the piano tuner and Detective Sneed.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | March 1, 2016 5:49 PM |
Iola's niece was played by Penelope Sudrow, who just the year before had been offed by Freddy Krueger by having her head slammed through a tv..,

Kayser was so hot in tonight's episodes. My word.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | March 1, 2016 11:46 PM |
I loved Naomi turning into little miss homemaker. Her reading of the line: "it's still in the kiln" kills me as did Iola's going home to "freeze my buns."
by Anonymous | reply 15 | March 2, 2016 2:08 AM |
Naomi: There's always room for a baby in a house filled with love. Mama: What the hell's that got to do with us?
by Anonymous | reply 16 | March 3, 2016 2:40 PM |
Is "Mama's Family" really so interesting that it deserves another thread? I don't think so. It's already been discussed to death, and the never-ending swooning over Allan Kayser's "hotness" is getting pretty tedious.

Exactly. There's nothing worse than a dickhead who posts in a thread only to complain about how tedious, unecessary, etc., said thread is.
R17/R19, if you're that uninterested, how about skipping the fucking thread altogether? Now, take your bullshit and, in my best Thelma Harper voice, get the hell out of this thread!
by Anonymous | reply 22 | March 4, 2016 10:29 AM |
The Naomi-centric episode last night where she was harassed by the Food Circus manager was hilarious.

"Exactly. There's nothing worse than a dickhead who posts in a thread only to complain about how tedious, unecessary, etc., said thread is."
It's called free speech, hon. Last time I checked it was still legal in this country. I guess you think every thread should contain nothing but positive comments about its subject and anyone who disagrees with that assumption should "get the hell out!" That's very fascist.
I take it you're a big fan of "Mama's Family", a lame sitcom decades old. That is so...sad.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | March 4, 2016 3:18 PM |
who was denying your free speech? No one. You can come here and be as negative as you want. Like you said, free country.
But if your dick wasn't so hard and wet as you typed, though....

R25, let's give it up. This fucking asshole is loving all the replies to his inane posts. It makes him feel very superior to us.

Alan Kayser with those skintight jeans, that fit bod and that perfect hair was the stuff that '80s hunks were made of.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | March 10, 2016 5:40 PM |
The rent-a-gent hunk watched Bubba sashay away just a little too long tonight. That was a good looking guy, even more so when he stripped down.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | March 10, 2016 11:53 PM |
I agree. I was yearning for him and Bubba to get naked and fuck. By the way, Alan looks slightly beefier in these episodes. He's certainly a hottie. His ass is delectible in those skintight pants.

I think My Mama, Myself episode that was on this past Tuesday ranks as a classic episode. Thelma's mother's ghost is hilarious. Bravo too Vicki for that characterization I say besides the funny script and all around quality.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | March 12, 2016 3:13 AM |
Anyone else ever see Vicki's live show? She does half as herself and half as Thelma.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | March 12, 2016 9:05 AM |
This is a post on a chat board from someone who says he knew Kayser when he married and moved to MO after MAMA'S FAMILY ended. They worked out together. If that's true he's a lucky bitch.
Anyway, for those of you interested in what he looked like nude...his ass looked just as delicious bare as it did through those tight 501s. There is just no way to describe it. I know I've wanted my mouth between those sweet cheeks a million times. His penis looked a lot like mine, circumsized, and a flaccid length of about 4 inches or so. It wasn't skinny, it was pretty thick. Never saw it hard dang it! And it was surrounded by thick, bright orange pubic hair. It was a virtual jungle down there, and it looked super hot on him. His body was absolutely perfect from head to toe.

Last night's episodes were painfully bad. Vicki proved she needs a supporting cast with her, and the less said about the homeless episode, the better.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | March 15, 2016 4:47 PM |
I enjoyed the Mama alone episode. I do agree on the homeless one, though. The last thing I want to see if I'm watching MF is a VERY SPECIAL episode.
One thing I dislike about the show in general is that every plot has to get Thelma as its focus. Episodes start out with Vint, Naomi, Bubba, or Iola in a situation, but always end up with Thelma in the middle. The show isn't MAMA, it's MAMA'S FAMILY.
On a side note, it's good to see Sister Jacqueline(Marge Redmond)out of her habit.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | March 15, 2016 10:50 PM |
I loved Mama Alone too. It was creative how Vicki was using household items as musical instruments. I wonder how many times they did that scene before she got it right.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | March 16, 2016 2:29 AM |
I thought Marge Redmond did a great job. Even though the topic was serious, the episode was actually very funny, almost like a Susan Harris "Soap" episode. And you also had Bubba in a tank and tight sweats.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | March 16, 2016 4:10 AM |
OMG, Bubba playing basketball in a muscle tank was enough to mitigate another VSE.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | March 16, 2016 5:28 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 49 | March 16, 2016 11:52 PM |
The sight of Iola standing at the door in her little "blind" sunglasses and saying "tap tap" killed me. I think it was the little smile on her face.

I like Mama's Family, has anyone ever noticed how tight Bubba's jeans were?
by Anonymous | reply 51 | March 17, 2016 1:09 PM |
Wardrobe on MF was done by Rhett Turner, who had it handed down to him by Bob Mackie and I think he did a masterful job. Turner gained brief TV notoriety as one half of "Scarlett and Rhett", a recurring bit on "The Gong Show." He almost certainly put Bubba into those painted on jeans.

Mama ranting and raving on that therapist's couch is so great. Mama threw tantrums like nobody's business.
Another instance of "Skeeter" breaking up at Mama's rage. She had to cover her face.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | March 19, 2016 4:04 AM |
Bubba's jeans were so fully packed tonight in the second episode about Thelma giving consumer advice that I thought he was sporting wood for most of the show. Woof.
Iola nailed that chocolate chip cookie fraudster right to the wall. He said he used 16 chips per cookie but her research proved that he was really using only 8 and cutting them in half. Get him, IB!

by Anonymous | reply 58 | March 23, 2016 11:34 PM |
Alan Kayser was white hot in these episodes. He got hotter as the years progressed. In seasons 5 and 6 his hair was longer and he looked more buff and actually pretty ruddy for a redhead.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | March 24, 2016 12:50 AM |
Lyman acted more like Opal than Naomi in her glee over finding out that Thelma's nickname was "Hot Pants."

[quote]Last night's Private Eye dream sequence I thought would be cringeworthy, but it was actually a lot of fun. Beverly Archer was a hoot as a femme fatale!
She definitely showed off the most versatile acting chops where she did the best job of coming off as a different character. Vint seemed to be the same, and Naomi just spoke in an irritating squeaky voice trying to to be a dumb blonde. Archer actually did a good job as playing a sophisticated femme fatale, with some interesting Iola touches like paying with coupons and her missing mother etc. Bubba's main role in the dream sequence seemed to being forcible stripped to his wife-beater, although it was a little disconcerting that it was done by his Grandmother.

Bubba had started to let the air out of his hair at the end of the series. He looked much better to me.
I understand that he said that he went right into rehab for the cocaines after the last show. Not that I'm an expert on drugs, but did any of you see any signs that he was using heavily in his scenes? Was there anything to look for? I'm surprised that he didn't show up in some other series after MF went dark, he was attractive enough and showed a nice touch for comedy. You would think that his bulge alone would open some doors for him.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | April 1, 2016 1:40 AM |
When he mentioned the water polo team I was hoping we would get to see him in a Speedo. I didn't recall ever having seen that, but I was hoping it was just a brain fart.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | April 1, 2016 7:56 AM |
R76, he sure looked healthy. If there was a sign though, it'd be his jitteriness. He was a bit jittery in a lot of those scenes.

Mama could make names sound like curse words: "Naomi Oates!"
Loved Naomi taking the gum out of her mouth before kissing a less idiotic Vint in the first go-round of the show.
Looking forward to Eunice wreaking havoc on the nuptials:

I only just now found this thread. Thank you for continuing the conversation.
One of my favorite episodes is the one with "the dames," just because it is so well structured. Interesting to note that it is the next to last episode of the entire series.
This show has many things about it that are great -- but only seem to be great intermittently, and rarely all at the same time. There are a few times when everything clicks into place and it becomes great comedy. The early shows have some great writing (particularly when CB is present as Eunice) but the technical aspects or other characters are off. The later shows have the best cast and performances, but have rather formulaic writing, or incomplete story structure.
I keep wanting this show to be better than what it is, because I do enjoy it and I think it deserved better than what it got.

by Anonymous | reply 124 | April 11, 2016 11:58 PM |
"Positive Thinking" was one of the ones that could have been a Family Skit on TCBS.

Plus, seeing Gloria DeHaven having a ball busting Eunice's chops was just great. Gays of a certain age were yelling: "That's Gloria DeHaven!" when she first made her appearance. She is still with us at 90.
by Anonymous | reply 126 | April 12, 2016 12:26 AM |
BTW, Gloria was married to this for about 6 years, She and John Payne had two kids.

Eunice: Why can't anything good ever happen to me? All I ever do is cook and clean.
Mama: Hell, you can't even do that.
Eunice: You're skating on thin ice, old lady.

Is the caller saying, "Go back to daytime television, you no talent hack?"

No, the caller is saying, "I can't until they invent the internet and then I can troll Datalounge!"

Just some useless trivia to chew on:
Hayley Mills is older than Dorothy Lyman.
"Pollyanna" is 70 today while "Skeeter" Harper is only 69 today.
by Anonymous | reply 136 | April 20, 2016 1:34 AM |
Skeeter looks a lot older than 69. 96 is more like it.

Praise the Lord......bring on the Bubba!!!

I love the way Allan Kayser played Bubba in these early syndicated episodes. You can tell he must've studied Carol Burnette's portrayal of Eunice because he has her mannerisms and high-strung flair for the dramatic down pat.
by Anonymous | reply 142 | April 28, 2016 1:02 AM |
Plus, Iola is back with us. Huzzah!

R144, getting rid of Sonia was the best thing that happened to MF.

[quote]I just watched the ep with Mama buring Fran's dress and Mama said she had 4 kids, Vint, Ellen, Eunice and...?
When they do the flashbacks where Mama gets hit in the head and goes to hospital, Thelma says to Eunice, "You were my third child, third time's a charm."
Perhaps on the NBC years they were setting it up to have a fourth child if needed. Also in the NBC years, Vinton is Naomi's third husband, in the syndicated years he is her fourth husband. (or maybe fifth).

I'm too lazy to check the other thread, so if this has already been mentioned---sorry. I was just on IMDb on Allan Kayser's board and came across a thread called AIDED THE MAMA'S FAMILY FALL: THE EGO HAS INCORRECTLY LANDED. Gawd, what a hoot! I don't know if we're allowed to quote posts from other boards, so I'll just say it is a must read. The OP goes off on our beloved Allan/Bubba for what he perceives is his focusing on showing off his goodies in later MF seasons rather than playing the character of Bubba. Fun read!
by Anonymous | reply 162 | May 27, 2016 10:53 PM |
I'll have to check it out, R162. I'm currently watching MF, and Allan looks glorious in tight gray sweat pants.

Speaking of Bubba smelling "down there," how funky must Vicki Lawrence have been under that padded suit she had to wear? She's a red head, too. Every cat in Raytown must have smelled fish.

R7 I have to say as a child, when my family watched this show, Bubba was one of the actors that proved to me that I liked guys in addition to girls, and ever since I have had a thing for slightly dumb gingers.

I met Allan Kayser at a film festival and a nicer person you will never meet. He was very engaging, talking on and on about his time on MF and his own family. So down to earth, and still VERY hot. I would’ve been remiss if I didn’t slip something in about the tight jeans, so I did. He laughed and said something to the effect of “I worked it” in those jeans. He even mentioned the gay following he’s amassed because of those tight jeans.

R179: It's returning to evenings throughout the week, 6:00 p.m. (EST) starting tomorrow.
R184: That's wonderful!

Ken Berry played Phil in the 1982 tv movie "Eunice" which got the ball rolling for the Mama's Family series. I think Rashomama was the last episode Burnett would appear in as her marriage to Joe Hamilton was falling apart and they were divorcing. Also I think the house that was in the original credits was also in "Eunice".

I've been recording the shows on MeTV. They show them in original broadcast date order, so after checking IMDB, I discovered that they skipped over an episode called "Mama Gets Goosed." Does anyone know why this happened? Is it not part of the syndication package for some reason?
by Anonymous | reply 192 | June 10, 2018 5:13 AM |

They do show it sometimes, but maybe they skipped it because it’s a holiday-themed episode and we’re not even close to Christmas.
