Prince and his attractiveness to "straight" men
The Vanity/Denise Matthews thread brought to mind a weird phenomenon of the 80s/90s: straight men claiming they were sexually attracted to Prince but to no other men. What was it about this hairy, little, repulsive man with a mustache, who was once described by Boy George as looking like pubic hair dipped in baby oil, that caused otherwise straight men to rub their knobs in gleeful delight?
Were there, or are there, any other men who had the same "crossover" effect?

I've noticed that most straight men are only attracted to feminine looking men (which I guess makes sense if they're basically straight).

R4, those things are usually a product of straight guys being pressured to pick a male star they find hot. They don't necessarily wank thinking about them although obviously slightly bi leaning guys might. For the completely straight guys the question is the same as if the 100% gay guys had to pick an attractive woman. I'm sure we all know what attractive woman looks like even if the sexual attration we feel is really small or not there at all.
I'm sure most guys would have no trouble admitting these guys are hot, even if they don't want to have sex with them.

David Beckham is the pick I've most heard. I guess his sporting prowess makes it seem more butch.
And I know a helluva lot of straight girls, including gorgeous ones, who had crushes on Prince back in the day. They all thought he looked like he'd be attentive in the sack.

The only time and place I've seen it alleged that straight guys have an attraction to Prince is here at DL, and I assume the OP of this post was the guy who tried to start the conversation a few months ago that is referenced at r2. The only reason I remember that thread is because I thought "Prince? What world is this person living in that straight guys are expressing an attraction to Prince?"
As I explained in that earlier thread, straight guys, when forced to pick a guy they'd hypothetically hook up with, usually go for a harmless, seemingly good-natured jock type like Channing Tatum. Straight guys looking to experiment in real life will frequently choose a man who is slighter than them so that they can feel in control of the situation, but they're not sitting around jacking off to the likes of Prince.

Most straight guys don't go for feminine men in the same way they don't go for MtFs.
They go for men they respect, ones other men respect... Plus it's butch by the power of two equalling all round greater masculinity. Plus, because other men respect them, they feel they have a more legitimate get out clause..."well who wouldn't, he's a legend..."

I remember seeing Jamie Foxx on TV, doing standup and talking about how Prince reminded him of a beautiful deer or fawn. The intimation was that Prince was sexy and Jamie was attracted to him.

I remember that skit, R14. In it, one of Prince's lackeys told Jamie to mind the eyes and never look directly into them or else you'd be enraptured under the spell that is Prince.

I haven't followed Prince for a long time but he used to have absolutely crazy and wild energy when he was younger, and I'm sure some het guys were drawn to it. I've never seen him live but I saw his Lovesexy tour video years ago and it was mental how much energy he had. Before he ruined it all by becoming a fundie he oozed sex. I don't think anyone thought he's completely straight. He always wore high heels, some were practically stilettos, and used make-up. He's always had feminine energy which partly comes from him being so small. Even though I agree with R13 that straight men don't necessarily find femme guys hot there was something about Prince that probably turned some guys on. Personally, as a slightly bi leaning gay man, I've never really found him hot but I've known loads of women who were crazy for him. Some girls can't resist certain femme guys. My straight buddies didn't care about Prince so no idea what his status really was among het guys.

At Prince's peak hotness in the eighties every pop and rock star wore makeup and had perms and highlights and so on. It was totally the norm. Even the dullest, milquetoast male singer was glammed up. We have become very regressive in the way male stars = suits and sneakers and jeans and female stars = spangles and high heels. So for a guy back then to be into Prince was not really any indicator that he was gay or bi.

[quote][R27], what's up with that, do you think? Why straight women like femme guys so much? I can't figure it out.
I've always thought it's something they can relate to as women, seeing femme guys as kindred spirits. Feminine men seem softer, more empathetic and nicer than cold, masculine guys. They are men you can imagine being friends with, and is probably a reason why some women love certain types of gay men. Some women might also feel protective about femme guys against judgmental het men.
I was a femme guy when I was around 14. I had a girlfriend and we sometimes hung out with two of her close female friends. At some point one of those girls approached me and said she and the other girl fancy me as well. It was such a weird situation. I was fairly certain I'm gay, and btw being bullied for it, and now I had three girls after me. The same thing happend few years later when I had moved away and was dating a classmate. I knew I was mostly gay but I loved having sex with her, and we were great friends and she knew I liked men as well. She also had two close female friends who knew nothing about us because my girl wanted to keep our thing a secret. Both of her friends made passes at me. It was so fucking weird. On top of that I had fallen in love with a guy from our school, who unfortunately had fallen in love with an old married man who loved his wife and wouldn't leave her. Oh, the memories *sigh*. BTW, I've never been hot and my love life with guys has been awful, but I have some sort of feminine energy that some women love. It's a cruel joke from the Universe that I mainly like straight guys. Or should I say straight-ish since so many straight men are not completely straight.

I remember this or a performance close to the same time where Prince was in undies, tights and high heels. Even then (and not just because of the way he dressed) I felt like he was going to be a big star.
Prince's people probably scour the internet for videos like this to take down because you can find hardly anything of Prince on youtube or anywhere for that matter. I'm surprised this video was still up.

He's the exception who proves the rule. On the face of it, who has a 5 foot, macho-femme, very hairy, very pale African American elf-man who dresses like the love child of Oscar Wilde and Grace Jones on their wish list?
It's because of who is is rather than his appearance. He does the fun party love songs, the passionate, screaming, rip-out-your-heart love songs and the nostalgic summertime love songs and sweet seductive love songs in all earnest. Laugh all you want about the acting in PURPLE RAIN but everytime The Kid performs the whole thing is thoroughly believable.
In spite AND because of his campy showmanship, he loved female sexuality not in the worshipful way that gay men love strong women, but in a graphically earthy, zesty, happy and unaffected way that for whatever reason black men specifically get away with singing about, and that sounds cheesy from Latinos and cringe-inducing from white guys (see Adam Levine, Robin Thicke, Tommy Lee).

Maybe because he was the only male in the entertainment industry to allow himself to be hyper-sexualized at the time? I never realized how much his body was featured in the Kiss video until I slowed it down using the speed feature in YouTube. Starting at 1:29 his body is featured pretty prominantly and sexually. He also wore those assless pants at that awards show. That kind of stuff usually didn't happen back then. Male sexuality was very closeted for fear of appearing gay.

Straight women also love glam dapper soft-butches. In Japan hordes of straight happily-married frauen and conservative straight girls waiting to be brides pay top-dollar and queue for days to see lesbian drag musicals.
Most straight females like anything androgynous with an element of pretty romance to it, basically.

This thread is giving me a headache.
A bunch of confused gay guys in here trying to figure out prince, "straight" mens attraction to prince, heterosexual women and why they liked him...
First thing, prince never oozed of effeminicy. His energy and everything inside of him was always masculine. Hell, more masculine than most men. His speaking voice was deep and sexy.
Women always pick up on masculinity.
This is what we mean when we say it's not about the muscles and clothes, it's about a man's energy. Straight women LOVE masculine energy. A man can be in a dress and high heels, make up.. and if he has that masculinity, it will show in every part of his body, especially his eyes.
The way prince used to look at women...he was undressing them with his eyes and you could always tell he genuinely loved and was attracted to women.
Shit, at his height in the 80s, it was all about glam. Glam rockers used to get so much pussy and they wore the frilliest things with dragqueen makeup.
You clearly know nothing about prince the artist or the person. No one who actually knew prince would ever say he was effeminite. He fucked tall women standing up.

R55 I always thought that explained the appeal of Cillian Murphy. The man literally has the face of a beautiful female but he is like catnip to straight women, especially when playing 'tough' masculine-appeal roles like mobster Tommy Shelby or creepy perverted heteros like that stalker in RED EYE. Even playing a crossdresser/transgender(?) person in BREAKFAST ON PLUTO - when he literally did wear "a dress and high heels" as well as full thick girly make-up and a voluminous wig of blonde babydoll curls - he still made women gaga. Could it be down to a dark maleness he exudes underneath the delicate feminine appearance...?

Straight, femme-gay-man-loving woman of 56 here. I love androgyny, but I was always revolted by Prince (and by "romance", R52). My problem with him was precisely the masculine energy R55 is referring to. Fey gays are all well and good, but a 5-foot-tall straight guy who thinks he's hot shit is simply unacceptable. Cillian Murphy is beautiful but his face is way too feminine for me to find sexy. This may be be why some women go for him in macho roles: they create the proper balance. Curiously, so do his drag roles. Being made up like a woman emphasizes the usually unnoticeable masculine features of his face.
