Interesting casting. Will this move Matt Smith out of the sci-fi/horror genre to more serious stuff like his pal, Ben Cumberbatch?
Matt Smith and Zosia Mamet to star in Robert Mapplethorpe biopic

Is she playing Patti Smith, though? That might explain the choice. Those two are really weird-looking, though.

Will Zosia be playing Robert with the whip stuck up her ass? She's clearly the more masculine of the two.

Yes, R7, but patti smith, while interesting looking, was no beauty. I suppose it evens out.

Well, if you want to complain, go directly to the Mapplethorpe foundation, as they're the ones who sanctioned it.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | January 27, 2016 5:06 PM |
Pretty much R11. The fact that the straight female director was focusing so much on Patti Smith almost guarantees that it will be all about her and Maplethorpe.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | January 27, 2016 5:11 PM |
R13 they didn't cast the film, the director did. I'm sure she doesn't give two shits what the foundation thinks.

by Anonymous | reply 16 | January 27, 2016 5:12 PM |
By the sounds of it this will be nothing more than a Patti Smith bio:
A biopic celebrating the life of the legendary punk singer Patti Smith is in the works, with none other than Girls’ Zosia Mamet set to play her. The upcoming film, entitled Mapplethorpe, will centre around the complex relationship between Smith and the late photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, the man she called ‘the artist of my life’, who shot her famous Horses album cover, and whom she lived, loved and worked with.

With so many hets involved you know they'll tell a great story about a gay man.

Why call it Mapplethorpe?
by Anonymous | reply 20 | January 27, 2016 5:28 PM |
R19 you inbred imbecile--the Maplethorpe Foundation may be financing the film but they did not cast it. The cunt making the movie chose two fucking other hets to start in the movie. So chances of getting a good gay bio are pretty much non existent. What we'll see is a Patti Smith bio with a few minutes of Robert Maplethorpe thrown in and those few minutes will focus on his relationship with that twat Patti Smith.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | January 27, 2016 5:28 PM |
R20 that was probably the only way they could get someone to finance the movie--call it Maplethorpe, get the money from his foundation and then make some chic flick celebrating Patti Smith. And think of all the awards they'll get doing a "daring" bio on Maplethorpe!
by Anonymous | reply 22 | January 27, 2016 5:30 PM |
Zosia Mamet is really ugly.

You fucking moron, the original commenter said nothing about actors, they basically said "telling our stories," which STRONGLY IMPLIES writer, producer, director. NOT actor.
If you didn't make that post, then learn to read. If you did make it, stay the fuck off the boards, because you clearly aren't cut out for discussion.
[R25] you ignorant slut, don't actors tell stories or will this be a reading rather than a film? Shut up you idiot.
No, asshole. The actors aren't responsible for the dialogue or direction. They give performances. The Mapplethorpe Foundation controlled the life rights and gave Dushku permission to pursue a film project nearly a decade ago. She's been trying to get this film made since 2007. Clearly they think she's got a passion for the subject and she presented herself in such a way that they feel confident she'll do justice to Mapplethorpe. The actors have zero to do with any of that.
Of course Patti Smith looms large in the picture. They were best friends and she's also the hook for publicity down the line. A- More people know who she is. B- She's still alive and can do PR when the film comes out.
Christ, were you just hatched yesterday?

Fuck you R27 you paid shill. I figured why you're so invested in defending the whore making this movie would come out eventually. The director chose to hire hets to star in a movie about a gay man then make the movie a bio about a gay man into a Patti Smith bio using money from the dead gay man's foundation.
They may have started of pretending they were making a Maplethorpe movie but now it's all about Patti Smith.

Straightwash the story and grab up the awards.

His hatred of gay actors and filmmakers is palpable with very comment he posts.

There was a time Miramax did some pretty credible and edgy stuff, but Hollywood is like that Disneyfied Times Square in New York. There is no edge, no real credibility. It's all about action oriented blockbusters, chick flicks, and cheesy, manipulative tear jerkers.
Of course the movie will suck, because it is aimed at an audience that wants to gawk at these characters like zoo animals instead of trying to understand them or, god forbid, be inspired by them. The ones who care about these artists and the artist scene of that time period will be pissed off and get depressed about how it's presented from such a shallow, modern point of view.

None of you saw Ondi Timoner's first film, Dig!? It was fantastic. It's a documentary that follows two bands that I loved from the 90's - The Dandy Warhols and Brian Jonestown Massacre - as one band gains a spotlight and MTV popularity, and the other sort of flounders and crashes due to their maddening frontman, the fascinating Anton Newcomb. It was a great first feature. I'm excited to see her do a story like this, I think you guys are jumping the gun to imply it's going to be all about Patti. Seriously, watch the way her camera follows around Anton in Dig! - she will know how to do Mapplethorpe justice. She knows how to film brilliant, outspoken, magnetic assholes.
I heard that Matt Smith was the best thing in that dire Ryan Gosling-directed film, Lost River - every review I read was impressed by the crazy that he brought to the role, something so totally removed from Dr. Who. Maybe he can pull this off. He's certainly got the right body type.
There's a lot more interest in Mapplethorpe right now, with the 25th anniversary of his death, the upcoming retrospective, and of course, ever since [italic]Just Kids[/italic] was published, bringing new interest (which I could just not get through. Patti sounds like she really saw him through rose colored glasses).

Patti Smith was an earthy, blue-collar hustler from New Jersey with zero connections who made it in a dangerous, filth-streaked New York. Zosia Mamet is a pampered showbiz child and overthinker who has never left Soho, Hollywood, or Paris. I don't see her pulling the performance off.

by Anonymous | reply 67 | April 6, 2016 5:18 PM |
R38? Did you seriously just post that?
On a weekly basis I am stunned by the level of ignorance of so many of the gay men who post out their asses about topics they know NOTHING ABOUT!!!!
It also makes me sad to realize they no absolutely nothing about "our" collective history.
At this point I have a lot more confidence in the people who are trying to make this film, than I do in idiots like R38!
Also no one hear knows anything about what this film will be like. It's so typical of DL to go off about something that hasn't even started filming. From the link it sounds very much like a labor of love for the woman trying to get her film made.
One more thing. The relationship between Maplethorpe & Smith is something I've been interested in for almost forty years. That anyone here would take issue with this subject because of a perceived lack of "gayness" is fucking mental. This story also includes dozens of poets, performers, and artists at the moment in NYC when they were about to unleash themselves on us.
Can't wait.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | April 6, 2016 6:08 PM |

Stop arguing for a second and think about some actors who actually LOOK like Mapplethorpe. Matt Smith is good actor but he looks nothing like RM.
I was watching "Vinyl" last night, I noticed how much James Jagger resembles Mapplethorpe. I have no idea if he could successfully do a Queens accent but he resembles Mapplethorpe more than Matt Smith. The casting for this upcoming film is terrible. Zosia Mamet looks nothing like Patti Smith. Also, both performers appear to have dark eyes. I guess they'll be wearing contacts?
It's funny how directors and producers don't think movie goers ever notice such things, especially when the performers do not resemble the subjects at all! For example, Ed Harris was great in "Pollack", but he was too good looking a choice. Jackson Pollock was an ugly man. Then again, Harris directed the film.

You have to wonder how the edgier sexual side of Mapplethorpe is even going to be touched upon in this film, if at all. There is a no-holds-barred book online, by one of his ex lovers. IIRC, the guy was the editor or publisher of Drummer, he was one of Robert's many lovers.
Robert was into fisting and S&M. It wasn't an act, he was really into going to The Mine Shaft and other S&M leather bars. He was fucking so many guys in one day, one of his ex lovers said he couldn't keep track.
Patti must have been aware he was cruising for men when he left her at the Chelsea alone for days. This was years before fame, he sure wasn't going to his photo studio in Soho.
The HBO documentary, while not as gossipy and revealing as his ex lover's book, did reveal that Mapplethorpe had a mean streak, he was awful to his family and well as his supposed friends, he went out of his way to shock them, he continued to do this years after he became famous. The guy seemed very unpleasant and miserable. He wanted to become famous and rich at any cost, he became both, yet was still a miserable person.

R97 read the biography about Mapplethorpe by Patricia Morrisroe. It shows how he was bisexual, and actually was into heavy BDSM, fisting, even scat (ewwwwww), was racist against black men, and given the large number of drugs he used on a daily basis I'm surprised he lived as long as he did.

by Anonymous | reply 104 | July 11, 2016 2:17 AM |
Mapplethorpe was not "bi-sexual." He was gay as the proverbial goose.
Both Mapplethorpe and Smith were VERY strange, unlikeable people. It's no wonder they clicked; they were cut out of the same piece of cloth. The only thing either one of them cared about was being rich and famous. And boy, did they have egos! Especially Patti Smith, who can't say a sentence without mentioning she's an "artist."
If this proposed film ever sees the light of day it will no doubt be hugely sanitized. If it wasn't it would get an X-rating. Mapplethorpe's "art" was photos of men drinking urine and having an arm shoved up the ass and uncircumcised black cock. He had a thing about black cock. Supposedly the great love of his life was NOT Patti Smith, NOT Sam Wagstaff (his rich sugar-daddy), but a schizophrenic black guy named Milton Moore, who Mapplethorpe considered "perfect" looking. Their relationship was a train wreck but Mapplethorpe was besotted by him.
Mapplethorpe was a racist. He considered blacks inferior and used the N-word frequently. But he craved sex with black men. Even after his AIDS diagnosis he went trolling the bars looking for black cock. He didn't care about passing AIDS to other people. He had no morals at all.
Why make a movie about Mapplethorpe, anyway? There's a pretty decent documentary about him called "Look At The Pictures."

R105 actually Mapplethorpe was bisexual and he was still sexually attracted to women long after he and Patti broke up. Doesn't anyone remember Lisa Lyon? He was lovers with her. WEHT her? Is she still a body builder?
Yes he did literally go crazy for that schizo black guy, and photographed him but that was in the very early 1980s when he claimed he had "Black Fever" and that only black men turned him on for racist reasons; but the Mapplethorpe bio explains this.

Oh, Mapplethorpe may have done it with a few, VERY few, women. But he was gay through and through. And he really wasn't much of an artist. His photographs were shocking but they really weren't great examples of "art." The best thing he ever did was probably the photo he took of Patti Smith for the cover of her first album. It really was a stunning photo.

Will Matt be displayed at his best a la the Master?

Please Patty Smith " jolie laide" ? She was plum ugly. Also overrated and pretentious. She was also really hateful and jealous of other woman. Will miss this.

"read the biography about Mapplethorpe by Patricia Morrisroe. It shows how he was bisexual, and actually was into heavy BDSM, fisting, even scat (ewwwwww), was racist against black men, and given the large number of drugs he used on a daily basis I'm surprised he lived as long as he did.}
The bio by Mapplethorpe's ex lover, the former publisher/editor of Drummer, is free to read online. Just Google it, Unfortunately I can't remember his name, his bio was much more shocking than the Morrisroe biography. This man mentioned everything the other bio did, but he didn't give any excuses for Mapplethorpe's racism and continuing to fuck any man with a pulse even after his AIDS diagnosis and, of course, without condoms.

R110 That's Jack Fritscher, take everything he says, claims, and writes with literally a ton of salt. This includes everything he wrote for Drummer magazine as well. I read the Mapplethorope bio he wrote. It's very poorly researched and written and it's more about Fritscher than about Robert Mapplethorpe. But Frtischer makes such untrue claims as he himself created Robert Mapplethorpe, and that they were lovers when it's more like they were just acquaintances. If they were really that close why repeat it so many times ad nauseam? Fritscher also brags about going to a scat orgy, and is probably a Petri dish of STDs.
Even when HIV/AIDS was known about in the 80s the majority of men did not use condoms, and this includes men who contracted HIV. Men who used condoms and practiced safer sex survived.

What's with the queen that insists that the highly overrated Mapplethorpe is gay? He was bisexual, but it's not like this is some secret or surprise.
His photography is not bad but it was not revolutionary or unique.

r99, that would be Lily James, his costar in "Pride, Prejudice and Zombies". She played the female lead, Elizabeth, whereas Matt played the undesirable Mr. Collins who Elizabeth rejects.
He's not traditional leading man material but I would do him any day over the doughy faced Sam Riley who played the male lead (Darcy). He seems like he would be a lot of fun in the sack.

Boy is she ugly. She looks like Harpo Marx only not as good looking.

For optimal verisimilitude, Matt Smith will have to undergo circumcision as part of his preparation for the role of Robert Mapplethorpe.

Zosia looks like she's playing Dr. Zaius.

Zosia dropped out, here is the actress playing Patti...according to IMDB.
... the most notable relationship of his life was with Patti Smith.
What's your source for this? Oh, Patti herself? How interesting.
Funny how Patti never seems to mention her late husband, a successful musician in his own right. It's all Mapplethorpe all the time.

Artists like Smith and Mapplethorple lived in their own self absorbed elistist bubbles where the common folk was ignorant trash while they really knew how to live life which, to outsiders, was a very destructive lifestyle (drugs, petty mind games, unsafe sex, etc.).
Smith looks terrible as Mapplethorpe in those pictures at r144.

Matt Smith and John Benjamin Hickey sharing a kiss.
Funny, but it is not a stretch for me to imagine Smith with a horsetail dildo up his bum.
Agreed. And from the plastic drop-cloth in the private pictures he likes it messy

What is the photo at R123 supposed to be?
by Anonymous | reply 124 | August 20, 2017 6:54 AM |
Why does Zosia Mamet's face have to exist like that? Do you think it would be better if she did something, anything else with her eyebrows? Could a plastic surgeon even do anything for her?

R125 she looks like a Simian monkey but she's bearding for her "husband".
Evan Jonigkeit and someone-not necessarily BS-involved in the making of the X-Men films, he's an okay stage actor but not that talented and his beard, er "wife" ZM and her dad are not so powerful they could automatically get him a role of a character in a Marvel action film, in TV shows they produce are involved in yes but not in a major film.
This queen pings to the end of the universe, if you can't see that your gaydar/bidar is broken.
