Somehow the rest of the Fresh Prince cast was able to successfully negotiate their contract and get along well with Smith. What was the number one movie at the box office this past weekend? Ride Along 2 was number one. It made over 40 million dollars. Guess what? The stars are black. Just like any other race, there are millions of college educated African Americans in this country. However, most Americans have not completed a college degree. Somewhere around 70% of Americans don't have college degree. Being that actors don't need degrees and most probably don't have degrees. I'm not sure what this has to do with anything. Anything that skewed to any demographic is not reflective of anything but itself. So the problem is with the academy membership and there's lots of ways could be imagined to open that up and reasonably quickly.

But the pool of films for nomination remains what is produced and selection still remains a highly subjective process. Hollywood needs to move outside of the good ole boy network and focus on better stories. Stories and actors that better represent the diversity of our country and our world.

I just don't believe that is Hollywood's job. It is an industry, a commercial, capitalist industry. It's role is to create product that makes as much money as possible for the people who invest in it. It just is. They make decisions based on market data - which sometimes, like in the Vince Vaughn example, does't yield what they expect. So, in due course, goodbye Vince. But it is a conservative, cautious industry. They aren't going to start producing indies because they believe in a mission.

But again, there's ways other than complaining. Stay away. Bums in seats measures success in this business. If people don't like the industry generally, don't buy what it sells. That will reflect. Whether it's enough to turn the ship can only be known when it is measured.

But there's other ways. In the 30s, dissatisfied actors clubbed together to create United Artists. If a group of actors want to develop and incubate talent and projects why not club together with their money and form a similar entity? Oprah's probably got some spare money to kick in. Show what sells and the mainstream studios will be all over it.

Ride Along 2 just came out, so I'm not really sure why you're talking about what it's making. Furious with a mostly minority cast did huge worldwide numbers. It was one of the highest grossing films in China. The Equalizer also did great numbers overseas. China didn't like the Hunger Games series at all, Pan totally flopped there and so did Tomorrowland.

Six Degrees of Separation was made in 1993. How many actors had done same sex kisses or would have been willing to do a same sex kiss in 1993. People are forgetting that a lot of film production these days is dictated by the financiers. They're not always the studios themselves and the studios can't force them to invest in films they believe or their data tells them won't live up to THEIR $$$ expectations.

It's a bit different with smaller "prestige" films there are financiers willing to bet and lose money if they get critical acclaim.

How is someone even commenting on the Oscars if they don't know the system of nominating. The rules are on line. For a picture or actor to be nominated they need a certain percentage of number one or number two ballots. I'm pretty sure it's 5 percent.

Further, there are 16 or 17 branches in AMPAS. Actors make up the largest branch but I am sure the other branches aren't going to be thrilled if it gets supersized even more. I am more concerned about the lack of diversity in below the line jobs. That is easier to diversify these fields in the industry by more inclusive training, apprenticing and job opportunity. Women are abysmally lacking in many of these fields.
