'Will threw a fit on the set of Six degrees of separation when he was required by the scene to kiss Anthony Rapp. 'He persuaded the director to shoot the back of his head in frame. Blocking the non existent lip lock entirely.

Actually, to be accurate about Six Degrees, it was Denzel Washington who told Will Smith to avoid the kiss - "you don't want to be kissing a man on screen in your first big movie. No way." It was reported by several sources in interviews with Will when the movie came out.

by Anonymousreply 15January 19, 2016 9:09 PM

Snoop's "stealing from us" comment is hilarious.

Yes, "white" moviemakers have stolen so much from black film people for so long it's tragic.

And of course it's not like he could cite a single example of anything, pro or con.

Just being as ass.

by Anonymousreply 21January 19, 2016 9:14 PM

R15 you are right about that news . Denzel Washington is well known homophobe

by Anonymousreply 22January 19, 2016 9:16 PM

Slavery never happened.

by Anonymousreply 23January 19, 2016 9:16 PM

R15 is correct. Though to defend them that was 1993, that was a completely different world than 2015. Denzel used to have a rule that he wouldn't kiss white actresses on screen, but as things have changed he doesn't feel that way anymore and did it for "Flight".

And even thought this "outing" doesn't come as a surprise to anyone, PROPS to Alexis for saying these things publicly. Just like with her spilling the Jared Leto gossip she clearly gives no fucks.

by Anonymousreply 43January 19, 2016 10:05 PM

Wasn't there a blind item during the 2008 election about Big Willys big willy tearing up some asian boy so badly he was rushed to the ER to be stitched up. Rumor was the Repugs put it out there when Smith was rumored to be playing Obama in a bio pick. The White House distanced itself from Will and Jada pronto.

by Anonymousreply 44January 19, 2016 10:13 PM

If Denzel said this, I find no fault with this sound advice. If Rupert Everett had declined his friend Madonkey's advice and not made a public announcement, he still would have a career today. He could have still been truthful in private like Matt Bomer. The atmosphere was not as gay friendly when Will was starting out as it is today.

by Anonymousreply 48January 19, 2016 10:21 PM
If Rupert Everett had declined his friend Madonkey's advice and not made a public announcement, he still would have a career today.

Rupert Everett is such a ridiculous man, he's had a great career. I'd love to know what leading man roles he thinks he would've been competitive for in the 90s had he been closeted. He's kidding himself if he thinks he had a shot at Bond (which is the only thing that comes to mind where he's remotely the type they were looking for). Pierce Brosnan had that sewn up back in the 80s when the desperately wanted him but he couldn't get out of his Remington Steele contract. Plus, Everett isn't even that good of an actor! I'm sure there are a bunch of handsome straight guys who would gladly trade places with him, career-wise.

by Anonymousreply 58January 19, 2016 10:51 PM

I have no idea what the fuck R49 is talking about. That Will and Jada both enjoy the same sex is OLD gossip and has been repeated on this board forever. Why exactly do you think we should be "defending" him from these "accusations"?!

You are reaching and your point makes no sense.

by Anonymousreply 61January 19, 2016 10:54 PM

Doesn't Scientology do gay conversion therapy and crap like that? If The Smiths are supporting that harmful cult, then I kind of understand where Alexis is coming from. In general I don't think it's "healthy" to out people, but if they are hypocrites who involve themselves with antigay causes, then they should be called out. Not to mention they never seemed to care much about other black issues, but now Will didn't get an Oscar nom, so they suddenly care a lot. It's all about their egos.

by Anonymousreply 64January 19, 2016 10:58 PM

R64, Scientology doesn't do "conversion" therapy, but my understanding is that once you get to the OT levels, if you want to be eligible to do those levels, you have to give up your gay sexual practices.

by Anonymousreply 73January 19, 2016 11:21 PM

R63 Patricia's Oscar speech was almost a year ago. The isn't any evidence of Patricia's career being harmed by any back lash. Alexis is a little bitter and has no career to lose. She's probably frustrated that other queers have big careers because they can closet themselves, while she can't. She just needs to vent every now and then.

by Anonymousreply 74January 19, 2016 11:24 PM

R63 the amount of backlash Patricia received last year was ridiculous! She just stated the obvious and SJWs ripped her apart as if she's the cause of all problems in this country. It's was pretty pathetic and loony.

While Smith's character does have an affair with Thal's character, it was Hall's character whom he kisses. It's the scene where Hall's character is teaching him how to act in society, and for every piece of clothing he takes off, Hall gives him another tip. it ends with a kiss (or it's supposed to)

by Anonymousreply 85January 19, 2016 11:41 PM

Sorry r78 I jumped into the thread without reading the link.

But why does she think that just because they are upset over Black exclusion in the Oscars that they need to be vocal about gays? Did she get upset that Carol didn't get a best picture nomination but Brokeback did? Sounds like she is a bit racist and this was a perfect opportunity to call attention to herself and go on a rant.

by Anonymousreply 86January 19, 2016 11:43 PM

I assure you, R70, as a "black fag", I have never been "cray", not even once.

Do I think Idris was overlooked? Yes. Do I think things need to change, yes, but not with films like THE BUTLER and THE HELP, or in some "reboot" of a superhero film, or in its "universe". Television seems to be where it's at for minorities these days, and all of the good writing.

by Anonymousreply 87January 19, 2016 11:48 PM

Surely Alexis just read this rumor online like everyone else and repeated it as fact

by Anonymousreply 88January 19, 2016 11:50 PM

Because you can't hide you are black, but you can hide you are gay ....

Somehow the rest of the Fresh Prince cast was able to successfully negotiate their contract and get along well with Smith. Apparently everyone else was happy with the money and their relationships on the set. Hubert is the only one who was not. She was the only one who wanted more money than the network was willing to pay. The rest of the cast seems to always speak fondly of each other and they have reunited several times over the years. Hubert worked on the show for 3 years 22 yrs ago and she's still very angry. Presenting herself as some selfless truth teller and attempting to continue a 20 yr 1 sided feud with Smith is ridiculous. At the end of the day what did she actually accomplish. Other than taking attention away from the more important issue of racial diversity and attempting to refocus that attention on her 20 yr old personality clash with a then 20 yr old Smith. She mention her concerns about her mortgage. If there were more opportunities being offered to minority actors; perhaps she wouldn't have to worry about her mortgage. By attempting to use this moment for her own selfish nonsense. She's only shooting herself in the foot.

Alexis Arquette is also accomplishing nothing for gays or diversity with her comments. She is turning the important conversation about racial diversity (that needs to be had) into a gossipfest. And the gossip isn't even new gossip. Speaking of the which, why do they have to be either gay or straight. Bisexuality does exist. So what if some bisexuals choose to marry. Are supposed bully them into picked a side? Who cares whether Arquette is listening or not. She has chosen to reveal to the public as much or as little as she wanted the public to know. When she wanted them to know it. Why should it be different for anyone else. Who is she to make demands on anyone. What a bizarre time and place for her to show up. Being part of a small minority group herself, why not take a stand for diversity, racial, gender, sexual orientation etc. and leave the gossip and petty personal attacks for another occasion. Tearing each other apart will not help us achieve equality for all. Working together will.
Also, if Will were an attractive white male, you all would defend him to the ends of the earth like you did on the "porn star, James Dean, accused of rape" threads, and Alexis would be demonized as another lunatic, vile "tranny" who posters should disassociate from. White supremacist hate racial minorities and they hate successful racial minorities even more. How dare minorities succeed and they not. by Anonymousreply 101January 19, 2016 11:59 PM

George Clooney has spoken out:
If you think back 10 years ago, the Academy was doing a better job. Think about how many more African Americans were nominated. I would also make the argument, I don’t think it’s a problem of who you’re picking as much as it is: How many options are available to minorities in film, particularly in quality films?
I think we have a lot of points we need to come to terms with. I find it amazing that we’re an industry that in the 1930s, most of our leads were women. And now a woman over 40 has a very difficult time being a lead in a movie. We’re seeing some movement. Jennifer Lawrence and Patricia Arquette have made the loud pronouncement about wage disparity, have put a stamp on the idea that we got to pay attention. But we should have been paying attention long before this. I think that African Americans have a real fair point that the industry isn’t representing them well enough. I think that’s absolutely true.
Let’s look back at some of the nominees. I think around 2004, certainly there were black nominees — like Don Cheadle, Morgan Freeman. And all of a sudden, you feel like we’re moving in the wrong direction. There were nominations left off the table. There were four films this year: “Creed” could have gotten nominations; “Concussion” could have gotten Will Smith a nomination; Idris Elba could have been nominated for “Beasts of No Nation;” and “Straight Outta Compton” could have been nominated. And certainly last year, with “Selma” director Ava DuVernay — I think that it’s just ridiculous not to nominate her.

by Anonymousreply 102January 20, 2016 12:00 AM

One good thing I can say about the trannies this year (and the ONLY good thing I can say about the trannies this year) is that they didn't go all batshit crazy and start screaming TRANSPHOBIA when those two trainwrecks from Tangerine didn't get nominated.

Think about it- The trans nazis are more rational than Jada Pinkett Smith. That's some scary shit.

by Anonymousreply 103January 20, 2016 12:01 AM

Idris would have been nominated if Beasts of No Nation had been released in a more Hollywood friendly manner. This is not racial, it's Hollywood saying they have rules and all these new methods of distribution are not equal to a premiere and distribution by industry accepted means, IE, in a theatre.

by Anonymousreply 104January 20, 2016 12:08 AM

r89 I worked on a project that Janet did not long after her departure from FPOB. Her problems with Will went far beyond just the money. He didn't treat her well. It seems she expected him to be respectful of her since she is/was an adult and he didn't see it that way. She took offense to his rude behavior and thought she could talk about it with him and ask for the respect she wanted but his attitude was, "I'm the star, I'll do what I want." He didn't like her treating him like he was a younger person that was supposed to show any respect to someone older than him. Basically they bumped heads and it was too bad for Janet.
[R89] I worked on a project that Janet did not long after her departure from FPOB.

So after working with Smith for 3 yrs 20 yrs ago, Hubert still complains about Smith everywhere she goes. Smith was 22 when the show started. Like many people that age he probably thought he knew everything and he was the star. It was his show. Regardless of his age, it was his show. It happens that way sometimes. Sometimes younger people outrank you. You can either suck it up or go somewhere else. You definitely might want to suck it up if you're trying to get a raise. Hubert needs some professional counseling so that she can move on.

[R89] When did Will & Jada come out as Bi?

by Anonymousreply 116January 20, 2016 12:29 AM

Well he blacklisted her 115. She did mention that when she spoke to me. However, it could be that she is too proud of a person and that that is what kept people from wanting to work with her.

by Anonymousreply 117January 20, 2016 12:29 AM
Huh? Alexis directly is saying that is what this is about, she is calling them hypocrites for speaking loudly about racial diversity while they hide in the closet

No, honey. This is a tranny mess trying to ride the back of a controversy to get her name out there. This is the same bitch who claimed to have hooked up with Jared Leto while she was still a man, decades ago, but only opened her mouth about it AFTER he won an Oscar. The "Will and Jada are gay" thing is as old as the hills.

Besides he's talking about shit that supposedly happened 20 years ago AND didn't have the decency to even pretend to have the facts straight (i.e. Anthony Michael Hall NOT Anthony Rapp).

by Anonymousreply 118January 20, 2016 12:29 AM

Did Arquette have gender reassignment?

by Anonymousreply 119January 20, 2016 12:34 AM

Sorry, bitches. I only want a WHITE Oscar. I want to snatch it from the jaws of a so-called actress like Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Chastain or Brie Larson. My only "equal" in this business is Meryl Streep.

by Anonymousreply 120January 20, 2016 12:36 AM

Why did Alexis do this? Did she have sex with Will?

by Anonymousreply 121January 20, 2016 12:37 AM
Well he blacklisted her 115. She did mention that when she spoke to me. However, it could be that she is too proud of a person and that that is what kept people from wanting to work with her.

Smith wasn't powerful enough to blacklist her 3 years into that show and with work being so scare for 40 yr old actresses (even scarcer for 40 yr old black actresses). How would she even know?

by Anonymousreply 122January 20, 2016 12:38 AM

I don't mean to change the timbre of the conversation (well, yes I do), but isn't what Alexis said possibly cause for slander in a court of law if the Smith's wish to pursue it? And the Smiths MUST pursue it if it is not true, as Tom Cruise sued that guy who said he was his lover--and won.

What if the Smiths DON'T sue? Isn't that like tantamount to admitting it is entirely true?

What legal recourse to you expect the Smiths to take---if any?

by Anonymousreply 123January 20, 2016 12:43 AM

If Will sucked Alexis's cock, I doubt they'll sue.

by Anonymousreply 124January 20, 2016 12:50 AM

r123, I doubt allegations of homosexuality would be considered defamatory in any jurisdiction where the Smiths could file.
What if the Smiths DON'T sue? Isn't that like tantamount to admitting it is entirely true?

No. It's tantamount to admitting you don't consider someone calling you gay something worth suing over. Sensible people understand that defamation suits are rarely a good idea, even if the statements are untrue and intended to be injurious.

by Anonymousreply 125January 20, 2016 12:51 AM
And the Smiths MUST pursue it if it is not true

No, they don't. What the fuck are you talking about? It is rare that celebrities ever try to sue in this situation, that Tom Cruise did helped increase his reputation as a controlling asshole.

They're going to have to (and trust me the wll) throw a sack over her head.

From Alexis' post "'F*** him. Gays have enemies. They lurk in gilded closets. Outing is healthy. You are either with or against us. You decide. Today."

But in Alexis' OUT interview she points out that Jared Leto could be bisexual. Can't Will and Jada be bisexual? In the strictest definition Jada is since she did give birth twice. But the rumor about the two of them has been out there for years. I know someone whose "friend of a friend" worked at a hotel where Jada would have her girl escapades. Truth? Fiction? Who knows.

I like Alexis, but if we're talking gay hypocrites, where's the outrage over the frontrunner for Best Actor, Miss Leo DiCaprio?

He rivaled Will Smith in the gay rumor department for a period of time, and his trysts have been well documented.

We shouldn't be awarding those in the glass closet, so why aren't we outraged over this?

by Anonymousreply 143January 20, 2016 1:36 AM

Dear Rich Black Celebrities: Shut the Fuck Up. Please. And ask your patronizing white friends to shut up, too.

Not that you don't have a right to your opinions. It's just that in this case you are so obviously deluded, cynical, smug, loving-the-victim-role and plain dishonest it is only hurting people.

Hypocritical, self-serving bullshit is not anything anyone needs to hear now. Try this on: "Black" movies often don't get nominated because they are special-interest movies with limited general appeal, and that means among the Academy voters. Blacks STILL are nominated in greater proportions than their representation in the population, based on a rolling average. One year or two years do not tell the tale. How many good and great performances don't get nominated in a year? How many great actors and actresses have not received nominations for years in a row despite good performances? PLENTY.

Demanding a quota system, demanding special attention, demanding this and that is NOT equality. Acting like fat-cat babies who would turn blue if they could but since they can't they have to boycott is NOT helping anything or anyone.

You want to know why blacks are underrepresented in the industry? Because in general terms the status of education among African Americans is deplorable, and there is less chance for a lower-income-family black kid to get through college and stick with it to make a career than there is for any other group except Native Americans. So why would you see representation in films greater than elsewhere?

MUCH of the problem is NOT with the industry. Employers are at the end of a long line of social and family failure - and you CAN'T hire people who can't qualify. Period. Black families are in crisis, black education is in crisis. Don't blame the film industry for that.

Blame yourselves, Willy and Jada. Look at those children of yours, with a lack of education, with outspoken delusions and great gobs of entitlement. Nice job, assholes.

by Anonymousreply 160January 20, 2016 2:43 AM

Her words:

"Gays have enemies. They lurk in glass closets. Outing is healthy. You're either with us or against us."

If the whole issue is not to reward those who choose the glass closet or promote a closeted lifestyle, then you need to start with the ones who have actually been rewarded or are due to be rewarded. Will Smith is not apart of either.

And she termed Jared Leto a bisexual which is not the same thing as saying he's 100% gay.

For what's it worth, I found Kevin Spacey making up a fictitious love of his life (who clearly had no idea of her role) on the stage of the Oscars far more offensive than anything Will Smith has done.

by Anonymousreply 161January 20, 2016 2:43 AM

Yes I understand Jada's message but it's obvious that the couple is not without enemies. Forcible outing is not good, especially like what Gawker did to that Conde Nast executive, but with Smiths I just don't care. I used to like Will Smith a lot but at some point he just stopped being a likable person. Especially with their secret ties to Scientology which they've denied many times even though they even funded a school teaching Scientology. I've for years actively avoided any movies he's in. I recently watched ID4 and remembered how hot and likable he used to be.

Let's not forget that even though Jada wanted to talk about race issues Hollywood, and the world, has still huge problems with gay issues. I'm not surprised at all that they got called out like this. I wouldn't do it but Alexis is such a crazy bitch that I applaud her for doing it.

And to all Smith fans claiming she only read the gay rumors online: Alexis probably has fairly close ties to Hollywood. No idea if she still lives there but she was part of the industry and probably knows gay Hollywood better than most.

by Anonymousreply 178January 20, 2016 3:26 AM

To me this outing business is asinine. No one has that right and no one truly knows someone sexual desires, orientation, fluidity etc. Will and jada could very well be bi, fell in love, and wanted to build a family. There seems to be some major resentment from strictly gay men against bisexuals and/or others who don't fit into a the straight/gay dichotomy.

It's funny how no one's pointed out the last two years Best Directors went to Mexicans and this year's might as well. I guess Mexican's are white now. Someone tell Donald Trump.

And it's odd that we discredit Academy members for being old and in their 60s but these were the exact kids who grew up in the 60s - the generation that wanted to change the world. They should be held to a much higher standard and their feet put to the fire.

by Anonymousreply 182January 20, 2016 3:32 AM

R174 It should be proportionate. How many Asians and Arabs work in Hollywood? What Asian or Arab would you say deserves an Oscar this year? Were there films where white people got nominated but Asians and Arabs were excluded, like Straight Outta Compton or Creed?

Straight Out of Compton made over 200 million worldwide. So all that limited appeal/special interest nonsense that you mentioned is complete B.S.. Hollywood turns out tons of all white flops every year. It doesn't stop the studios from investing in the next Vince Vaughn flop . Hollywood needs to move outside of the good ole boy network and focus on better stories. Stories and actors that better represent the diversity of our country and our world. With the huge number of all white good ole boy network bombs that they put out each year. The current status quo shrink from diversity and avoid new ideas is not working.

Nonwhites pay the same price for movie tickets as whites do. Dataloungers complain about what Hollywood puts out constantly. Gays would like greater and better representation. Just like any other race, there are millions of college educated African Americans in this country. However, most Americans have not completed a college degree. Somewhere around 70% of Americans don't have college degree. Being that actors don't need degrees and most probably don't have degrees. I'm not sure what this has to do with anything. However, black women lead in college enrollment numbers.
Despite the misconceptions and stereotypes about African American women, we are making great strides in education.
According to the data, 9.7 percent of Black women are enrolled in college. Asian women are second, with 8.7 percent working toward degrees, followed by Asian men at 8.4 percent, White women at 7.1 percent, Black men at 7.0 percent, Hispanic women at 6.6 percent, White men at 6.1 percent, and Hispanic men at 5.9 percent.
Although African Americans continue to make gains in higher education, the mainstream media has ignored our achievements. Despite leading all groups in college enrollment and rapidly increasing the numbers of African American who have bachelor’s degrees to 19.6 (up from just 11.3 percent in 1990),

Spike Lee is one of the few more famous college educated directors. He has an undergraduate degree from Morehouse and a graduate degree from NYU.

When did this become the Black Actors at the Oscars thread?

by Anonymousreply 187January 20, 2016 3:36 AM

Everybody in Hollywood knows their story. They have a classic Hollywood lavender Marriage in that both of them are gay. I'm glad Arquette outted them as they're both absolutely insufferable.

by Anonymousreply 190January 20, 2016 3:40 AM

R160 is an ignorant, ridiculous asshole who made absolutely no sense. We have many wonderful black actors, many better than the pasty white asshole that get nominated for no reason, as if Lawrence needed another nomination? Give me a break.

The problem is...old white men, fucking things up.

by Anonymousreply 191January 20, 2016 3:46 AM
Dear Rich Black Celebrities: Shut the Fuck Up. Please. And ask your patronizing white friends to shut up, too. Not that you don't have a right to your opinions. It's just that in this case you are so obviously deluded, cynical, smug, loving-the-victim-role and plain dishonest it is only hurting people. Hypocritical, self-serving bullshit is not anything anyone needs to hear now.
Blame yourselves, Willy and Jada. Look at those children of yours, with a lack of education, with outspoken delusions and great gobs of entitlement. Nice job, assholes.

Well if anyone is an expert on cynical bullshit and assholery R160 it is you. The amount of irrational rage that you unleashed in just the first few lines of your lengthy rant was frightening, to say the least. Are you always this angry or do you reserve this level of anger for conversations about race?

by Anonymousreply 192January 20, 2016 3:49 AM

It's super sad to say but sometimes actors will do anything to further their careers. Just because someone made a conscious decision to hit the casting couch doesn't mean they are primarily gay or straight. I bet more than half of you gay men and women have banged the opposite sex to feign what you thought would support your facade at the time.

I'm not saying Will or Jada are straight, or gay, but you have to admit some crazy Hollywood "magic" had to occur to develop their lifestyle and career. Keeping your sexual lifestyle secret is a small price to pay for the romper room fuckery that is their lives.

by Anonymousreply 193January 20, 2016 3:49 AM
They (Academy voters) are 94% white, 76% male. (and yes average age 63)

This right here is the problem.

If Jada, and Spike, and all the others want to get to the root of the problem, then something needs to be done about the makeup of "the Academy."

There is no way in hell that an institution that is comprised 75% of older, white men, will ever "get with the times."

They will never be pro-gay films (Brokeback Mountain, for example). And they certainly don't have the modern mindset, needed to reflect our popular culture.

I believe that you are an Academy member until you die or resign, so what is needed, is an influx of female and minority voters. Double the existing number of voters, and infuse the organization with more diversity.

That's the only way the Academy will ever become modernized and up-to-date.

by Anonymousreply 194January 20, 2016 3:50 AM

I just watched this week's Hollywood Reporter round table on Sundance. Will was on there with other actors--Ruffalo, Samuel Jackson, del Toro, Michael Caine...and holy shit, did he come off like a pretentious weirdo. You could tell some of the other actors were thinking he was nuts. I will say, he is a good actor, because he didn't "ping" at all during the show--just hella crazy. OBVIOUSLY his Scientology teachings--he reminded me of how Cruise comes across in those settings.

by Anonymousreply 195January 20, 2016 3:53 AM

I kind of love Samuel Jackson. I wish Willy would of followed suit. Maybe Alexis has the inside on Sammy Jack?

by Anonymousreply 196January 20, 2016 3:57 AM

If Will and Jada care so much about representation and opportunities for people of color, why hasn't their production company hired any black directors for any of Will's big-budget projects? This is about Will not getting a nom for Concussion and nothing more. His ego is too large to accept his performance wasn't good enough, so it must be racism.

I'm curious if she'll discuss this controversy or if it will be ignored as too extreme. I think she likes the Smiths but she likes juicy gossip and scandal too.

by Anonymousreply 216January 20, 2016 9:18 AM

I don't feel the slightest bit sympathy for Will Smith and Jada. When they attend Tom Cruise's wedding in Italy, the shop keepers said they were the nastiest people they ever dealt with. Will Smith once made a statement saying, I am better than Jimmy Stewart! Who says something like that? They are arrogant and completely obnoxious. Tough shit if the were outed, they need to be taken down a couple of pegs! In fact the African American community needs to kick them in their arrogant selfish self-serving asses.

As a general rule, those who vote in the academy are extremely liberal minded. Their age has nothing to do with it because there are many racists who are young. Racism isn't exclusive to one particular group of people. People who say that is saying that to make themselves feel good who don't belong to that accused group of people. BTW, there are many African American people who are racists and rarely people point that out. Spike Lee is a major racist who hates white people and who gets away with it. However, if a white person is racist it gets attention.

There are a lot of African Americans in the entertainment business more than ever before. There more films with African Americans in them more than ever. 12 years a Slave that film was a major buzz in the film industry and other films. Yet, there is still great anger directed at white people. There are some racists people in our society ,but I think most people in our society today are not racists. Also, I don't believe hardly anyone on DL is racist. But the race card keeps being used by some people here and there to manipulate people to get what they want. And this has been done lately to a much greater extent over and over again and it sadly stirs anger. Now, there will be Oscars flying off the shelf given to African American actors and actresses regardless if they did a bad job or not in the future because people are going to start panicking that they are labeled a racists. The African Americans are going to be the ultimate victims of this whole thing because the question will be, did they win because people believe their acting was superb in a film? or did they win an Oscar as result of PC pressure? There are many film African American actors and actresses who can stand on their talent alone like anyone else ,but sadly this whole boycott commotion will get in their way.

I haven't watched the Oscars in a long time because as a whole, it is boring and totally unexciting. So as a general rule I really don't care but I am just participating on this interesting issue.

by Anonymousreply 236January 20, 2016 12:21 PM

I agree with the post upthread that the Academy membership is the problem assuming the demographic is as old, white and male as it appears to be. Anything that skewed to any demographic is not reflective of anything but itself. So the problem is with the academy membership and there's lots of ways could be imagined to open that up and reasonably quickly.

But the pool of films for nomination remains what is produced and selection still remains a highly subjective process. A more diverse system of nomination [italic]might[/italic] avoid some of the glaring oversights that are being complained about at present but it wouldn't guarantee it. Would that be enough?

And this:
Hollywood turns out tons of all white flops every year. It doesn't stop the studios from investing in the next Vince Vaughn flop . Hollywood needs to move outside of the good ole boy network and focus on better stories. Stories and actors that better represent the diversity of our country and our world.

I just don't believe that is Hollywood's job. It is an industry, a commercial, capitalist industry. It's role is to create product that makes as much money as possible for the people who invest in it. It just is. We can't even make phamra focus on new antibiotics (because there's no money in it,) so how and why would we somehow legislation (which is what the post implies) that activities of the film industry? The backlash would be insane. The oversight impractical. It can't happen.

They make decisions based on market data - which sometimes, like in the Vince Vaughn example, does't yield what they expect. So, in due course, goodbye Vince. But it is a conservative, cautious industry. They aren't going to start producing indies because they believe in a mission.

But again, there's ways other than complaining. Stay away. Bums in seats measures success in this business. If people don't like the industry generally, don't buy what it sells. That will reflect. Whether it's enough to turn the ship can only be known when it is measured.

But there's other ways. In the 30s, dissatisfied actors clubbed together to create United Artists. If a group of actors want to develop and incubate talent and projects why not club together with their money and form a similar entity? Oprah's probably got some spare money to kick in. Show what sells and the mainstream studios will be all over it.

by Anonymousreply 237January 20, 2016 1:20 PM

Let Jada boycott. And Spike. I wouldn't know who they were if I passed them on street.

Also, I hope they will both be making some affirming public demonstration on the night. A free screening of an important film in a deprived neighbourhood, something like that.

by Anonymousreply 238January 20, 2016 1:36 PM

That rumor has been floating around for years, but I believe is true. It's ironic that Smith threw a fit on the set of the film "Six Degrees of Separation" when he had to kiss another man. If you watch the film, you can tell his enjoying every damn minute of it.

by Anonymousreply 239January 20, 2016 1:39 PM
What is the point of Alexis screaming they are gay?

Ostensibly it's about hypocrisy -- they're closeted for the money and career boost it gives, he claims, and they don't do anything for gays. You could say they work against gays by being Scienos. But I still cringed when I heard it because it sounds like an attempt to damage their reputation from someone who thinks being gay is bad; trans activists online often use "gay" as an insult.

It's complicated and I don't think Joe Q Average is going to think anything but "hurr some gay guy who dresses like a girl says these black folks are also gay durr." Not a lot to be accomplished by this, in the long run.

The Oscars will be a joke starting next year. It'll boil down to an Affirmative Action program that'll make sure x% of awards go to whites, y% go to blacks, and z% go to everyone else, regardless of the quality of film that's pumped out.

The Academy is not the main problem. The larger problem is the studio heads who make the decision to hire the same white actors for big budget movies. Now [italic]that[/italic] is where the affirmative action is needed.

by Anonymousreply 242January 20, 2016 2:15 PM

No, r240, no. You sound like some Hollywood PR on a mission to discredit Arquette by any means (and I suspect that you're also r243, or at least that r243 is a very close relative of yours)—so you're twisting things around in bad faith. It's NOT Arquette who's saying that being gay is bad—she's saying that by slinking around in their closet, the Smiths are communicating that being gay is something that has to be hidden and that you should be ashamed of. They'd probably rationalise it by saying that otherwise they'd lose their bread-and-butter acting careers; Arquette's saying that, in the end, it feeds the narrative that being gay is shameful. Hence her reference to lurking in gilded closets.

She's not batshit crazy at all.

by Anonymousreply 245January 20, 2016 2:59 PM

Enough with the "Leo is 100% gay" shit. I have a very good friend who had sex with him over 20 times in the mid 90's. Yes. male to female dick in the puss sex. And he is very well endowed according to her. He is not however, a good fuck; and I have no doubt that her repeat performances with him were more about his burgeoning career than her thirst for his peen. He may well have a history with men as well, but that is something I do not know factually. So he is at the most BISEXUAL.

by Anonymousreply 246January 20, 2016 3:41 PM

R246 You know, next time you come here you might try and tone down the obvious publicist routine. It's very OBVIOUS! I'm sure you have a dozen friends claiming to have riden Leo, just like you have a dozen mistresses for Will Smith.

Leo is gay. Always has been always will. He was going to come out in the 90s, and has his little pocket boyfriend Haas around with him everywhere. Leo wouldn't know how to get pussy even if he fell on it.

Essentially, producing because they believe in a mission is what is currently being done. Which is one of the reasons why so many flop. They produce movies now based upon their good ole boy network mission. The product of that mission many times does not sell but because of those relationships they are willing to take the risk.
Diverse movies are a huge business. Why doesn’t Hollywood make more?
Four of the year’s 25 top-grossing movies star a minority in a leading role. All but two had white directors. And the number of minority actors forecasters expect to get Oscar nominations can be counted on one hand.
In the year since the Sony Pictures hack exposed racially insensitive emails and cast a spotlight on Hollywood’s diversity problem, movie studios have shown little progress in hiring more people of color for their casts and crews.
The industry is ignoring a gold mine. Every year for the past half-decade, the average white American has bought a ticket to fewer films than the average black, Hispanic or Asian moviegoer, industry data shows. Though 37 percent of the U.S. population, minorities bought 46 percent of the $1.2 billion in tickets sold in the United States last year. . . . . . . . . . . .
For all its grandeur, Hollywood is a fiscally conservative industry, and studios and financiers have long proved hesitant to invest tens of millions of dollars into projects backed by filmmakers they do not know.
Very often, the people they know share their skin tone. In 2013, more than 92 percent of movie studios’ senior executives, 82 percent of film directors and 88 percent of film writers were white, UCLA researchers said.

The good ole boy network is alive and well.

I don't recall anyone stating or suggesting that there was only one solution to Hollywood's diversity issue and that solution would involve the Academy Awards. The Academy Awards serve as an annual reminder of the diversity problem that exist in the entertainment industry. Not that we needed a reminder but they serve as an annual wake up call.

Change is inevitable. If for no other reason because of the demographic changes that are taking place in the United States. A few years ago many people believed that gay marriage could and would never happen. The majority of the country opposed the idea. Public opinion shifted Gays and heterosexuals stood together united and demanded change. Because of that, public opinion shifted very rapidly and marriage equality is a reality. A great deal of work went into changing the hearts and minds of the public. It took a great deal of campaigning, advertising, petitioning, and demanding to be heard. A large and diverse group of courageous people lead us to victory. This change too will happen. Despite the white supremacist, their rhetoric and their attempts to shut down the conversation. eg. Alexis Arquette Those of us who believe in equality for all must work together to expedite change.

by Anonymousreply 248January 20, 2016 4:08 PM

r247, so true. I have friends in the gay Hollywood community who were really excited about him coming out early in his career, but Gilbert Grape came out and he rocketed to attention. It's all about branding. We get that in the business. So for all the winky-winks in the broader community, he can never come out as gay. Because he is such a pussoir hound matinee idol, they only way he could come out is to hit a late career slump, go away for a few years, and then be found in a steam room with Travolta...

One of the things that surprised me about Best Picture nom is the list isn't made from total votes.

It's made from who was ranked #1 on all ballots.

So, even if Straight Outta Compton made it onto people's lists if it didn't receive a certain percentage at #1 then it can't make the cut.

An insider said that needs to change and the noms be tabulated by votes as a whole.

Leo is a bi-sexual hedonist, unlike Will who is a closeted gay man.

Art world friend is a longtime buddy of Leo, his ritual goes something like this:

Leo calls his NYC gang a few weeks in advance, it's understood they reschedule everything to be available, then comes the best food, drink, entertainment, etc. that Leo's money can buy, foots the entire bill. During the week or so he's here, the drugs are non-stop but "social" and the sex is usually with a combined series of "old reliables", hot young wannabes of all gender and dirty. Once they have their final goodbye brunch with Leo, they returned to their normal lives, happy, but slightly broken.

Takes a month to recover, but they all continue to do it because it's the best time ever. Ever.

by Anonymousreply 263January 20, 2016 5:38 PM

Whomever unthread who said Straight Outta Comptn and Ride Along 2 aren't niche movies is wrong and isn't looking at the bigger picture.

Hollywood is much bigger than the U.S. now. Most of a movie's box office comes from the overseas markets, notably Asia (especially China) and Russia.

Straight Outta Compton took in $200 million, but only $39 m of that was from outside the U.S. Ride Along 2...$31 million in the U.S. and $2 million overseas. Now compare that to the Renavent which took in $95 million in the U.S. and $60 million overseas...so far. And the Martian, which took in $227 m in the U.S. and $370 m internationally.

Hate to say it, but your blaming the wrong country for the lack of diversity in film". Hollywood is a business. -- not a charity and not a cause. Make no mistake that it is a business. Sorry to say but white faces put asses in the markets that make money for the studios. It's why crappy Vince Vaughn films get made.

Also the trend over the the last decade has been to scale back on mid range budget films in favor of blockbuster tentpoles.

If Spike and Jada want more diversity in film then they are going to have to create it themselves or stick with Netflix and Amazon and give up on the idea of an Oscar.

by Anonymousreply 264January 20, 2016 5:54 PM

Yeah, lots of typos and your should be you're, but I'm on a train and correcting shit is hard enough on DL on a good day.

by Anonymousreply 265January 20, 2016 5:57 PM

Some people criticized [italic]Straight Outta Compton[/italic] for the fact that it skirts over the violence against women and gays in a lot of their albums. I wonder if the "unrated director's cut" is any different in this respect.

by Anonymousreply 266January 20, 2016 6:03 PM

You're right R266. I was very surprised that it was liberals and liberal sites like Gawker and Buzzfeed that criticized Straight Outta Compton not the "white supremacists" the SJW troll keeps going on about.

by Anonymousreply 267January 20, 2016 6:14 PM

How to speak SJW:

"White supremacist" = anyone who disagrees with me or holds POCs to the same standards as whites.

by Anonymousreply 268January 20, 2016 6:17 PM

White trans woman vs. black cis couple. Who are the SJWs siding with?

by Anonymousreply 269January 20, 2016 6:53 PM

What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object?

by Anonymousreply 270January 20, 2016 6:59 PM
How to speak SJW: "White supremacist" = anyone who disagrees with me or holds POCs to the same standards as whites.
White supremacy or white supremacism is a form of racism centered upon the belief, and promotion of the belief, that white people are superior in certain characteristics, traits, and attributes to people of other racial backgrounds and that therefore white people should politically, economically and socially rule non-white people. The term is also typically used to describe a political ideology that perpetuates and maintains the social, political, historical and/or industrial domination by white people (as evidenced by historical and contemporary sociopolitical structures such as the Atlantic Slave Trade, Jim Crow laws in the United States, and apartheid).[1] Different forms of white supremacism put forth different conceptions of who is considered white, and different white supremacists identify various racial and cultural groups as their primary enemy.[2] White supremacist groups have typically opposed people of color, immigrants, Jews, and Catholics.[3] In academic usage, particularly in usage drawing on critical race theory, the term "white supremacy" can also refer to a political or socio-economic system where white people enjoy a structural advantage (privilege) over other ethnic groups, both at a collective and an individual level.

Racial equality is something that we have yet to achieve and for which we must continue to fight. Racial minorities do not want quotas, handouts or a different set of "standards". They want a level playing field, equal access to opportunity. Because the playing field is not level whites benefit from a special set of standards that rigs the game in their favor. Racial minorities just want a fair shot. Which currently they don't receive in the entertainment industry and in many other areas.

Despite the fact that racial minorities have to often work twice as hard to have half as much as whites in the United States. Opponents of racial equality malign and demonize minorities. They portray minorities as inferior (lazy, stupid, inarticulate, violent, amoral) parasitic beings who want handouts, free stuff. As many dataloungers have done here and continue to do anytime a racial minority is mentioned. They drag out every ancient negative stereotype and generalization that they can conjure up and tie them together to create this same ole tired white supremacist narrative. Which is what you did R268.

Bigotry in all its forms is wrong and we must all work together to end it. We all deserved to be treated equally.

by Anonymousreply 271January 20, 2016 7:23 PM
They portray minorities as inferior (lazy, stupid, inarticulate, violent, amoral) parasitic beings who want handouts, free stuff.

That's bullshit, R271. The majority of people getting handouts and free stuff are white.

R264 has got it right. If we made movies based on the various minorities in the USA being equally represented (according to their numbers), Hollywood wouldn't survive.

I remember when WS was asked about his role in Six Degrees and made the statement that he thought "homosexuality was wrong." He wasn't asked the question. He volunteered the information.

by Anonymousreply 273January 20, 2016 7:42 PM

On the subject of Leo, if he truly is dating Rihanna then there ya go. I have friends who are cool with her, she doesn't beard. Her and chris had a real thing. She's kinda a freak, but I know for a fact she doesn't do sham relationships. Plus she;s like one of the biggest popstars int he world right now, she doesn't need too.

"they're closeted for the money and career boost it gives"

R240, R245: This "Pride vs. Shame" dichotomy is misleading. We don't live in a simple world, even if America is only about bipartisan EVERYTHING these days.

Not all straights get leading roles. Being straight IS the prerequisite. The gate-keeper. If the Smiths didn't want to be second-classed in the 90s, their choice is obvious. However unfortunate, shame-worthy to us in 2016. Else, they had to wait another 30~50 years before a gay lead is as common as a black or female lead. Smith being black HAS been part of breaking up the monotony, acclimatizing movie-goers to the idea of a black hero (cos he CUTE!), paving the way.

Real progress is incremental. These "fall outs" in the "tweener" stages is part of the growing pains (ask all the countries USA has forced "democracy" down their throats.)

Slow and nice, Alexis should've told Leto that.

by Anonymousreply 287January 20, 2016 10:43 PM

R264 The Oscars have nothing to do with box office. The Danish Girl has only made $22,076,363t worldwide, with about half of that in the US. Joy is actually a flop.

Ride Along 2 just came out, so I'm not really sure why you're talking about what it's making. Furious with a mostly minority cast did huge worldwide numbers. It was one of the highest grossing films in China. The Equalizer also did great numbers overseas. China didn't like the Hunger Games series at all, Pan totally flopped there and so did Tomorrowland.

The idea that foreign countries won't watch movies starring minorities and flock to anything white has been proven wrong time and time again.

by Anonymousreply 288January 20, 2016 10:58 PM

Also, anyone who calls closeted actors "hypocrites" hurting the gay cause, needs to rethink their own ongoing financial support of straight actors in lead roles. Straights are the ones setting the standard, enjoying their privileges to the UNQUESTIONED EXCLUSION of everyone else who ain't straight.

Attack the root cause, or the symptom. Your choice.

by Anonymousreply 297January 21, 2016 1:08 AM

I'm not sure 'everyone' knows about the gay rumors. I'll bet a lot of young black fans and straight male action movie fans have never heard about it.

We gays are always up on this stuff.

I simply don't trust the motives of people who live their lives controlled by multiple systems in exchange for tangible benefits (Will and his Jada) posturing that they are downtrodden.

And people in this situation, embodying the term "entitlement," do not perceive their own hypocrisy.

But that doesn't make them any less hypocritical. Remember, NONE of the people "speaking out" are especially bright. That includes Spike Lee, who thinks attitude is education, or Lupita, who is known to be pleasant but manipulative and rather dim.

Add Clooney to it.

At least Jolie has kept her mouth shut.

No, r239, his same-sex 'kiss' in Six Degrees was very obviously fake with no physical contact involved. He then gave interview about how Denzel told him he shouldn't be kissing no guys. I thought his performance in Six Degrees was the weakest of the whole cast.

by Anonymousreply 303January 21, 2016 3:36 AM

R239/R303 Imagine someone hiding their sexuality, in the spotlight with a camera, and asked to "kiss" Denzel. He's not that great an actor...he froze.

by Anonymousreply 305January 21, 2016 3:48 AM
I simply don't trust the motives of people who live their lives controlled by multiple systems in exchange for tangible benefits

Um hm right.
(Will and his Jada) posturing that they are downtrodden. And people in this situation, embodying the term "entitlement," do not perceive their own hypocrisy. But that doesn't make them any less hypocritical.

Smith pointed out the obvious. The movie business lacks diversity. That needs to change. As I already pointed out 46% of movie tickets sold last year were purchased by racial minorities. Almost half of all tickets were purchased by minorities. Minorities should have opportunities for greater representation in front and behind the camera.
Remember, NONE of the people "speaking out" are especially bright. That includes Spike Lee, who thinks attitude is education, or Lupita, who is known to be pleasant but manipulative and rather dim. Add Clooney to it. At least Jolie has kept her mouth shut.

No I don't remember that. Spike Lee has an undergraduate degree from Morehouse and a graduate degree from NYU. I'm pretty sure that he has a pretty good understanding of education. Lupita Nyongo has a graduate degree from Yale and she is fluent in Spanish, Luo, English, and Swahili. Around 70% of Americans don't have a college degree. With or without a degree they are all probably much brighter than the average American and certainly brighter than many of the people who post here.

R300 You are deflecting.
No, [R239], his same-sex 'kiss' in Six Degrees was very obviously fake with no physical contact involved. He then gave interview about how Denzel told him he shouldn't be kissing no guys. I thought his performance in Six Degrees was the weakest of the whole cast.

Six Degrees of Separation was made in 1993. How many actors had done same sex kisses or would have been willing to do a same sex kiss in 1993. We know that only recently have attitudes started to shift about homosexuality. Just a few years ago the majority of the country was opposed to gay marriage. A same sex kiss was certainly very taboo in 1993.

Most racial minorities know what it is to be marginalized and demonized because they are different. They deal with the social stigma attached to race every day. Effeminate gays also know what that is like. They deal with the social stigma attached to sexual orientation. Closeted gays don't know what that is like. However they do know that it is not pleasant and they don't want to experience it. Nonwhite closeted gays don't want to deal with the additional social stigma that comes with homosexuality. This is why the fight for equality for all is so important. We must move past all of this and stop punishing people for being who and what they are. We all deserve to be treated equally. The gossip, Arquette and all of the other petty nonsense is a distraction from what is really important. Arquette did all minorities a huge disservice. We need to join together and fight against all bigotry. Instead of fighting each other over nonsense.

by Anonymousreply 306January 21, 2016 4:12 AM

How old are you, r306? I don't get why people are talking like the 1990s were as bad as the 1950s. Attitudes towards homosexualiy have been shifting since the 1960s and 70s and had progressed so far by the 1990s that the US Government was under considerable pressure to stop discriminating against gays in the military (never mind that Clinton copped out on that one). Popular culture LOVED the gays in the 1990s (Will & Grace anyone). Tom Hanks played gay in one of the biggest films of 1993. You have a strange take on history.
Snoop's embarrassing video

What? What was that?

by Anonymousreply 320January 21, 2016 3:40 PM

People are forgetting that a lot of film production these days is dictated by the financiers. They're not always the studios themselves and the studios can't force them to invest in films they believe or their data tells them won't live up to THEIR $$$ expectations.

It's a bit different with smaller "prestige" films there are financiers willing to bet and lose money if they get critical acclaim.

How is someone even commenting on the Oscars if they don't know the system of nominating. The rules are on line. For a picture or actor to be nominated they need a certain percentage of number one or number two ballots. I'm pretty sure it's 5 percent.

Further, there are 16 or 17 branches in AMPAS. Actors make up the largest branch but I am sure the other branches aren't going to be thrilled if it gets supersized even more. I am more concerned about the lack of diversity in below the line jobs. That is easier to diversify these fields in the industry by more inclusive training, apprenticing and job opportunity. Women are abysmally lacking in many of these fields.
