I know his long term relationships were with women, but he was openly bi and was a huge influence on the gay community.
Why is the press completely ignoring that Bowie was bisexual?
by Anonymous | reply 67 | January 14, 2019 11:59 PM |
He was openly bi in the 70s, but then claimed it was just a phase, and that he was actually entirely straight.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | January 11, 2016 4:00 PM |
Didn't he basically renounce his bisexuality--saying he just went along with it at the time because it seemed to be the "in thing"?
by Anonymous | reply 2 | January 11, 2016 4:00 PM |
He wanted to be hetero superstar, not a fringe gay icon. Not as much money in the latter.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | January 11, 2016 4:03 PM |
He was straight as of ten minutes after Ziggy dropped. No icon of mine, simpering OP.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | January 11, 2016 4:23 PM |
I don't think that it's proper to write of someone's sexual preference at the time of their death.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | January 11, 2016 4:29 PM |
[quote]Why is the press completely ignoring that Bowie was bisexual?
They're also ignoring his Nazi period.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | January 11, 2016 4:29 PM |
Bowie had a schoolbook example of a gayface. I seriously doubt he ever completely gave up on homosex.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | January 11, 2016 4:30 PM |
Wasn't there a thread not long ago referring to an article about the many women he shagged over a few decades? I'm quite sure he had male lovers and even love interests. From that thread and the referencing article he seemed to really go for women and they for him.
I'm not sure the announcement of his death needs to include details about his sexual preferences, either way. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it already well known and documented about his sexual and love pursuits/interests?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | January 11, 2016 4:34 PM |

Well, they included details about his str8 relationships. Cherry-pick much?
by Anonymous | reply 9 | January 11, 2016 4:40 PM |
Maybe because that was a million years ago when he was in his 20s and not really relevant to anything at all?
by Anonymous | reply 10 | January 11, 2016 4:41 PM |
sexual preference?
by Anonymous | reply 11 | January 11, 2016 4:42 PM |
He never had a long term relationship with a man.
If the press talked about the sex lives of rock stars in the 70s when one of the stars died, it would have to print obituaries saying, "Mr Rock Star was married to two women during his life and lived with Jenny Schmoe for the past ten years, but he fucked at least several hundred others during his career, including Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, super-groupies Roxie Mew Sick, Bad Pam, Kerry Nayshun and a host of 13 and 14 year old girls who claimed to be 17, but Mr Rock Star knew damned well they were under aged."
by Anonymous | reply 12 | January 11, 2016 5:07 PM |
Must we discuss this?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | January 11, 2016 5:11 PM |
Here he gets angry in a subtle way at the interviewer for asking him:
by Anonymous | reply 14 | January 11, 2016 5:17 PM |
He talked a lot more about it in this interview

by Anonymous | reply 16 | January 11, 2016 5:23 PM |
Sexual preference... huh.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | January 11, 2016 5:27 PM |
IIRC, it was Angie who claimed that they were both bi. I don't recall if he ever declared/acknowledged it himself.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | January 11, 2016 5:51 PM |
It's pretty safe to assume that everybody did anything that moved back in those days. It doesn't require a label or a line in an obituary.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | January 11, 2016 5:58 PM |
It should be in his obit.
Until recently, straights were unique in wearing a ring to signify their flaming heterosexualness. Now it's open to everybody and doesn't tell us much, but the "ring-thing" was pretty flaming. Bowie was bi long before it was accepted by anybody and it should be mentioned.

Brian Eno, during their entire musical collaboration.

It's not so much about the sexual preference than the drugs of choice in the Playboy interview above: he says he likes uppers and is pretty much a speed freak and/or a coke head. Or maybe he meant caffeine, but come on this is Playboy in 1976: he would never mean caffeine unless he wanted to be the laughingstock of its readership.

David Bowie was both gay and bi-sexual.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | January 11, 2016 7:41 PM |
[quote] The term "sexual preference" is typically used to suggest that being lesbian, gay or bisexual is a choice and therefore can and should be "cured." Sexual orientation is the accurate description of an individual's enduring physical, romantic and/or emotional attraction to members of the same and/or opposite sex and is inclusive of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, as well as straight men and women (see AP & New York Times Style).
by Anonymous | reply 25 | January 11, 2016 7:47 PM |
It seems like it makes no difference, today, but in the early 1970s it was a big deal. Bowie was a pioneer. The Melody Maker article in which he stated his bisexuality was in 1972; Elton John came out in 1976.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | January 11, 2016 8:26 PM |
[quote]Elton John came out in 1976.
I came out to my then girlfriend in 1972 after an Elton John concert. Pure coincidence. I had no idea about him.

Why aren't they reporting that he raped Lori Mattix before Jimmy Page did?
by Anonymous | reply 28 | January 11, 2016 8:35 PM |
American press, perhaps, not European. Here is in about all news about his death.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | January 11, 2016 8:47 PM |
Because who is Lori Mattix? And how gay, btw.

Elton who gleefully shut the door back in 1984 with his marriage to Renate what's-her-name. Nothing to see R27, nothing to see.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | January 11, 2016 8:57 PM |
Wasn't he caught in bed with Mick Jagger? The excuse they used was they were composing the song Angie.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | January 11, 2016 9:08 PM |
Back in early 70s, both Elton John and David Bowie were in LA touring. Elton was just starting off and getting popular. A popular DJ who was dating my boss hosted both Elton and David on his show. He told her that it was well-known that the one who pretends to be gay is really straight and the one who pretends to be straight is really gay.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | January 12, 2016 2:18 AM |
I find it ironic that he died at the age of 69 since that was the position his ex wife found him in with Mick Jagger
by Anonymous | reply 34 | January 12, 2016 2:32 AM |
They're not reporting it because there is no such thing as a bisexual man! Only women may be bi! This has been DECIDED! Now, immediately cease any conversation to the contrary!

No shit, R28.
R30- she was 13 when he slept with her.

by Anonymous | reply 38 | January 12, 2016 11:57 AM |
[quote]Why is the press completely ignoring that Bowie was bisexual?
The British papers were talking about it yesterday. It was the American media that won't say anything.

r38 -- Florence King, who also died this week, said the same thing after she told the story of becoming involved with women. Both Bowie and King were put off by how groups started hounding them to be their mouthpieces and began to criticize anything they did that didn't reflect how these groups thought they should be.

Bowie had later admitted he was more fascinated by gay culture in the 60's and 70's, rather than actually being homosexual himself. I get the impression that in hindsight he was more inspired by the whole "underground scene" aspect of it at the time and saw it as more of an inspiration for him artistically. He's admitted to trying sex with guys but later realized it wasn't his thing. Personally I'm not really offended by him exploring gay culture and gay relationships and coming to the conclusion that he is heterosexual. I went to high school dances and briefly dated girls before I came out as homosexual, it doesn't make me "bi" either. The other thing is, most people already assumed he was gay early on in his career, and he even said he was at the time, so what did he even have to lose by "coming out" as heterosexual years later? I understand the timing of him announcing he was straight during the onset of the AIDs crisis was unfortunate, but I don't see him as being a coward who was merely doing it to keep his career afloat during the gay panic of that time. He was still pretty outspoken then as well, look at how he ripped MTV for not featuring black artists? Plus his relationship with Iman pretty much speaks for itself and has stood the test of time.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | January 12, 2016 3:17 PM |
[R42] - so insanely delusional - where do you think the gay side of him went? Was he cured by Evangelicals? Did it float off up to heaven during a prayer session? Did it blow away like "fairy dust into the wind?
by Anonymous | reply 43 | January 12, 2016 7:45 PM |
R43, why are you trolling? Are you an ass?
There's nothing wrong with people exploring. That's how they learn what works for them.

R12, Sex without anything long-term is still GAY! on DL. ONE DROP, mamba that. No double standards for Bowie.
Now let's drink it in, bitches:

What is it you want the media to say? Don't we want the world to accept people as people without referencing their sexuality? I do. And as someone rightly said, it isn't always what defines a person.

by Anonymous | reply 54 | January 15, 2016 12:40 AM |
Why do gays promote the "once gay / always gay" agenda? It does us no good.
And don't you want straight guys to feel comfortable experimenting?
As R42 points out, many gay men experimented with woman as teenagers and young men. That doesn't make them bi., just figuring things out.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | January 15, 2016 12:46 AM |
Bowie said " I was always gay " - not bi -ten years later during the height of a world epidemic he magically became straight! Everyone was panicked to the rafters - people didn't want to touch you if they thought you might be gay - many people forget the deep fear and hysteria! He wasn't being cowardly, he was surviving! He had custody of a12 yr old - could that be taken away?
by Anonymous | reply 56 | January 15, 2016 12:56 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 61 | January 15, 2016 1:23 AM |
R56 is right. In 1972 he came out in a British magazine as GAY. He said he'd always been gay and that it was not one of his personas. He was known in London as gay...he bopped around everywhere in flimsy dresses. He liked rough trade. After he started getting more famous, and got heavily into drugs, he started sleeping with everything, including 13 year old kids.
In 1983, as the world was becoming more conservative and the HIV/AIDS crisis was claiming lives, he told Rolling Stone magazine he was straight, and that his 'bisexuality' was basically just a phase.
I never understood the worship for Bowie. He was interesting for five minutes, then turned into a drugged up mess. Then in the 80s he turned into a character from Miami Vice, with those dreadful linen suits.
Plus there was the Nazi thing he flirted with, plus the rape accusation in Philadelphia. He was better off being gay. He spent a lot of his life trying to closet himself, and it fucked him up royally.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | January 15, 2016 1:24 AM |
Is Imam a transsexual? I doubt that very much. She had a child and it looks like both of them. Why would Bowie choose to live with a woman if he was wealthy and gay? It doesn't make sense. That is why I have always thought Bowie was always straight no matter what he projected or said. His genius was his ability to other than he appeared. If anything Bowie was a closet straight.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | January 15, 2016 1:24 AM |
