Mine used to be Mahalia Jackson's, until Patti Smith sang it in Rome.
What's your favorite version of "O Holy Night"?

Mariah's version.

Another for Donna Summer's version. I'm not a fan of that album overall--too restrained and dull-- but that one track. . .I can't go through the holiday season without it. Her voice, the choir kicking in. ...I wish it was longer.

Wow, R12, I had never heard that version before. Thanks!

R14 I don't know if Alvin and the Chipmunks have done it, but South Park has.

I prefer "O Nightly Hole."

Florence Ballard was the real life version of what happened in Dreamgirls. She was Effie. She had a better voice, but babytalk Diana was screwing Barry Gordy. Even had his baby. Flo left the group, (was pushed out really) and she tried hard to get a deal as a solo performer, but it never happened. In Flo's version of the story, she was on welfare, and then she died.

Mariah's version, when she hits the "falll in your knees" line it's amazing. Sang hunty

Mariah's version was a perfect blend of Gospel and Pop with a little Opera dramatics thrown in the mix. Also, on that CD she throws down on some real, stomp-your-feet-and-clap-your-heads Gospel with "Jesus, Oh What A Wonderful Child," proving that she's a bonafide soulstress.

No joke - Donna Summer did a version on "Solid Gold" that will give you goosebumps...

Thanks to all for supplying many lovely versions (and one or two that, well ...). Such a beautiful and solemn song.
After hearing all (yes, including the goats), I prefer Leontyne Price's. Patti Smith's was right behind her -- so touching and straightforward.
Of the pop singers, Celine Dion's. While I could do without some of the melismatic flourishes, her breathiness works beautifully with her phrasing.

30 Rock: Jenna and her boyfriend Paul, wearing costumes as Lynn Swan and Black Swan. Truly gorgeous singing.

I grew up with the Andy Williams version. Not saying itās the best, but my mom worshipped him and played all his records.

I know you'll all laugh but for Christmas songs I love Perry Como. Maybe it's the Italian Catholic thing. I don't know.
And someone mentioned Johnny Mathis. You can't go wrong with him either.

I think there are many great versions that have been provided. It is difficult to choose one over another. I like this one by Boyce Avenue. It's not overdramatic and has a simple accompaniment.
