If you're counting TV stars, recent revisits to photos and videos of Jon-Eric Hexum have cemented my feeling that he was truly one of the most handsome men in the history of Hollywood. Except the word "handsome" doesn't do him justice. He was truly beautiful, sheer physical perfection. Seriously.

I'm sure this will make some people think I'm insane, but you know what? I don't think James Dean was especially good looking. I guess maybe people who find him hot are responding to his persona and his acting style -- which I can't stand, by the way. But if we're rating him in terms of sheer physical beauty, I don't think he's anywhere near the same class as most of the other men who've been mentioned here, and honestly, I would rate him as only slightly above average at best.

Agreed, but the title of this thread is "The Most Handsome Men in the History of Hollywood," and James Dean was mentioned. I don't agree. I think Kathleen Turner in her prime was far more physically beautiful than James Dean -- and I'm gay.

I recently started watching 30 Rock on Netflix, and I have to say, even though he's a bit plump, Alec Baldwin was still handsome as hell. Definitely a stunner in the early 90's, but still hot. Good call, r27. This thread seems to skew more toward the golden age of Hollywood. Paul Walker is one of the most beautiful men I have ever seen, in or outside of Hollywood.
r44, that's a nice, shortlist of current A-list beauties. Ryan Gosling is handsome as fuck. Have never been a big Ashton Kutcher fan in terms of the roles he's performed, but my boyfriend had Dude, Where's My Car? on Netflix the other evening, and lordy-lord-lord was Ashton gorgeous in his twink days. That prompted me to look at recent pics, and he's up there with the all-time best in terms of looks. Woof.
r78, ditto. Huge fan of 30 Rock, and I can't watch an episode without thinking how good Alec Baldwin looked. That show would have spanned his late forties into his early fifties. Still looks good in the trailer for Concussion. A very handsome man.
A final note/question on this thread. Does handsome differ from beautiful/gorgeous in terms of a man's looks? In other words, does handsome connote classically good-looking/chiseled. Maybe that eliminates men with softer features?

Yes, R61, but Holden started to lose his looks way younger than those other guys you mentioned. I think it's amazing that he got the role of the young stud in the movie of PICNIC, and I can only guess that happened because the nutso, closet-case director Josh Logan was fixated on how beautiful Holden was -- 10 or 15 years earlier.
I'd like to cast another vote for Hart Bochner. I think the only reason his name doesn't come up more often on the list of Hollywood's most beautiful men is that he didn't work as much as a lot of the others mentioned here, and he transitioned to directing and writing pretty early on.
Speaking of actors who didn't work all that much, here's the name of another beauty I don't think has been mentioned yet: Matt Keeslar. Alas, I believe he has pretty much left the business. See link.

Ideally Holden should have been younger, but remember too: Hal is a drifter, he had a tough life, he had problems with the law. It's even better if he has a menacing quality somewhere in there.
Also, Holden's look was in vogue at the time: hyper masculine, square jawed and rugged.
You rarely hear the term "rugged good looks" today. Today's handsome is more than likely a line-free baby face.

All true, but though the character's age is not specifically stated, I believe he's supposed to be in his mid 20s. (People keep referring to him as a "young man," and we get the impression that he went to college with Alan not that many years earlier.) Holden was 37 when he did the movie, and he looks several years older. That's my point.
[quote]Also, Holden's look was in vogue at the time: hyper masculine, square jawed and rugged. You rarely hear the term "rugged good looks" today. Today's handsome is more than likely a line-free baby face.
I don't object to his rugged, hyper-masculine looks, I object to the fact that he was too damn old for the part. The character makes no sense if the actor looks older than 30 at the absolute most.

by Anonymous | reply 134 | December 8, 2015 8:45 PM |
Why can't Hal be in his mid-30s? Maybe it's Cliff Robertson who was miscast. There's no desperation if Hal is young and promising.
For that matter, Kim Novak looks 30 in the film. If she looked like she was actually 19, who would care about her problems? Everyone looked older back then. Verna Felton was probably just 40-something.

I was mad about Matt. He moved to Portland and went to nursing school. He may have switched over to med school. I loved that movie he made in Ireland in which he walked around with a sheep covering his cock, shrieking about how his girlfriend's male family had tarred and feathered his "dangler."

[quote]Why can't Hal be in his mid-30s? Maybe it's Cliff Robertson who was miscast. There's no desperation if Hal is young and promising.
He can't be in his mid-30s because that's not the character Inge wrote. The action of the movie is presumably set around the time the movie was released, in the mid 1950s. In those days, no one would ever refer to a man in his mid-30s as a "young man" -- not even the older women. Hal is supposed to be a pathetic because he has been leading a wild, trampy lifestyle, not because he's so old.
You're right about Kim Novak -- and she looks way too old for her part, also. I didn't say otherwise. The character is supposed to be in her mid to late teens, whether or not you think that makes her uninteresting.

Like your pointR33. To me, James Dean was more about the charming, rebel/unconforming look as opposed to being the perfect pretty boy face. His manner weighed so big. He was a fascinating individual who passed way too soon.

I think Holden could have gotten away with 30 in Picnic if it wasn't for the alcohol. There has to be a bit of weather beaten desperation to the character.
And for those women in their 40s and 50s they would have still referred to him as a young man even back then.
He looks even too old in Sunset and he was the perfect age for the character. Again a young man beginning to age and get desperate.
In the early 40s Holden was impossibly handsome.
For some reason Wilder gets Holden to look pretty smashing and even callow in Sabrina. Whereas he gets Cooper to look like Chevalier's grandfather in Love in the Afternoon which far from being romantic is just plain creepy. They didn't see this in the rushes?
by Anonymous | reply 159 | December 9, 2015 2:31 AM |
The actual story of Picnic was about guys who were probably in their mid 20s. Out of college, working for dad or riding the rails, etc. so maybe 24 or 25, 26 t the latest. Kim Novak's character was working at the dimestore wasn't she? Fresh out of high school and into the job market which is what they did in the 50's. So maybe she was 19 or 20. Still milking the image of the Home coming queen with her Neewollah queen crap. William Holden, Cliff Robertson and Kim were all too old for their roles, but they were box office at the time.

I don't think McQueen comes anywhere near being the most handsome in a town flooded with handsome men despite his good looks.
However I might give him the award for being the most magnetic and charismatic leading man ever.
He blows everyone off a movie screen with the possible exception of Faye Dunaway. And Joan Blondell.
He and Streisand would have made an interesting couple. Though not ideal he would have made a much better Billy Rose.
I mean you don't follow up Omar Sharif with a piker like Caan.

[quote]Not casting Paul Newman as Hal in the original stage production of PICNIC or in the film rates as typical Josh Logan stupidity.
Uh... Logan and the man who WROTE the play knew what they wanted.
Besides being wrong for the part, movie audiences really didn't know Newman: his first film had been a flop; he was mostly known for television. He lost out on East of Eden too. On the other hand, Bill Holden was a huge Oscar winning star who had been in a string of popular films.
by Anonymous | reply 196 | December 9, 2015 3:54 PM |
R196, your kind of thinking (and Josh Logan's) has been responsible for some of the worst casting in Hollywood history. Newman would NOT have been wrong for the part of Hal in the show or the movie. On the contrary, he would have been perfect for the part, because one of his great strengths was being able to act the role of a man who's clearly damaged and jaded despite his youth and physical beauty.
I realize he wasn't a box office draw at the time the film was made, but they could have helped make him a huge star (earlier) if they had cast him in the damn movie of PICNIC. They had other stars in the movie to serve as box office insurance. I believe Don Murray was practically unknown when he was cast in BUS STOP, so that was one of the few times when Logan got it right.
William Holden is great in some things, but he was horribly miscast in PICNIC. The story makes NO SENSE if Hal looks like he's 40. Audiences seem to have been less sensitive to this sort of thing at the time, but when modern day audiences watch PICNIC, I don't think I'm the only one among them who's embarrassed for Holden because he's SO OLD for the part.
Of course, there are hundreds of other examples of this throughout Hollywood history. Established stars tend to be older, which is why they sometimes score younger roles that they shouldn't go near. Leslie Howard in GONE WITH THE WIND is a perfect example, and he stands out even more because he's the only one of the four leads who's obviously much older than he should be.

Some of the people you have named are great looking guys to be sure, but this thread is for "The MOST HANDSOME men in the history of Hollywood. " "MOST" being the operative word. And to the poster who named Alain Delon, you have my undying gratitude.
l wanted to add my 2 cents worth the the Picnic debate. Paul Newman could have played Hal, sure, But personally I think he was too pretty. If I had cast him, it would've been as the rich boy. I bet he could've played smug very well. I think they were looking for someone who had a dissipated, more rugged, beat up look for Hal. William Holden was way too old though. I saw a RV remake with Josh Brolin and it was awful. Josh played Hal.
by Anonymous | reply 203 | December 9, 2015 7:26 PM |
[quote]Keanu and Ashton are much better looking in person. Literally, they photograph poorly.
I've never seen either one of them in person, but I think they both photograph just fine, and you are the first person I've ever heard say otherwise. Kutcher was a model before he was an actor, and I don't think he would have been hired as a model if he "photographed poorly."
R203, Paul Newman DID play the rich boy in PICNIC -- in the original Broadway production. I don't agree that he was too pretty for Hal, because, as I said, he was very good at playing a character who's a mess in spite of his physical beauty. See CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF-- not the same character as PICNIC, but there are similarities. And look at COOL HAND LUKE. Newman thrived on roles like that, and I don't think he ever had any interest in playing a conventional, pretty-boy leading man.

But if you were walking down a street you would not even pay attention to him if he walked by. He is not as tall as I expected gim to be. I doubt if he clears 6 feet. I love that someone upthread mentioned JOHN CASTLE, the British actor who portrayed middle son Geoffrey in The Lion in Winter! But he really hit his prime in the late1980s when he starred in the BBC miniseries Lost Empires, costarring a young Colin Firth. He also starred opposite Joan Hickson's Miss Jane Marple in the best of those Agatha Christie mysteries A Murder is Announced.
Any Brits here reading this who might enlighten me on why he never made a bigger impression in the US?

Not among the most "handsome" men in the history of Hollywood, but Mark Wahlberg definitely is (or used to be) among the hottest. Some TV station was showing THE BASKETBALL DIARIES yesterday, and I caught several scenes with Marky shirtless, showing off that bangin' bod of his at around age 23. The movie is pretty terrible, but it's worth it to see Marky with his shirt off. (Also Leo DiCaprio, but he never did it for me.)
by Anonymous | reply 300 | December 24, 2015 1:25 PM |
R300 Mark Wahlberg, really? I've read he can't stand the sight of his own face on film and refuses to watch his own films. Hot body, bad skin.
by Anonymous | reply 301 | December 24, 2015 1:29 PM |
Yes, Mark Wahlberg, really. As I made a point of saying, I wouldn't call him "handsome" but I think he is, or used to be, incredibly hot. I think his face looks good from certain angles, and depending on his expression. I've never noticed his skin being particularly bad. As I said above, if you want to see BAD skin, get a hold of a hi-def video of the first STAR WARS movie and check out Mark Hamill. It's incredible.
I just thought of another guy who was smoking hot despite bad skin: Dan Cortese. And, of course, Brad Pitt. It's kind of ironic that several of the major movie and TV sex symbols attained that status in spite of that. Maybe the bad skin made them look just imperfect enough to make them more relatable?

There are pictures of Heston even wearing less than that just some sort of modeling pouch.
Certainly one of the greatest bodies I've ever seen. Not as finely sculpted as what we've gotten used to but magnificent in a more relaxed effortless way.
If I had been an art student when he was modeling when he first came to New York I would have found it very difficult to concentrate.
He might have turned into a 4 star shit when he was old but that could have been early dementia.
Earlier in his career he was a brave liberal and he was always very appreciative of his fans.
Totally besotted with him as a little boy when he stripped off that handsome astronaut uniform to go skinny dipping.
Had he been younger in the 70s he might have pulled a Jan Michael Vincent full frontal. I have always loved handsome exhibitionists.

Paul Newman wins in my opinion, hard to beat him. But Clint Eastwood was incredibly handsome for a longggggg time too. And built like a brick shithouse to boot. In "Play Misty For Me", alas, he didn't really fill out those briefs very well. Kind of a letdown in the hung department.

Robert Taylor was very handsome but he had one fatal flaw: the lack of a strong jawline. He had to be photographed very carefully to conceal it and, as in r398's photo, it was often enhanced with defining shadows and/or makeup. It worsened as he grew older and I don't think he was attractive at all by the end of the 1940s-onwards.
I'm also not a fan of his extreme widow's peak.

I'm sure some will say I'm playing the race card, but I assure I'm not. And I am including younger actors and a few models. Just thought they were worth mentioning.
Poitier and Belafonte were handsome in their own way, not necessarily sexy by Hollywood standards...they would have had to play those roles to be considered sexy, and black men were not cast in those roles.
Some of the following men played in awful Superfly type films, but they were nonetheless handsome...you'll have to google them as I don't know how to bring images to DL...Ron (not Ryan) O'Neal...hated Superfly but his appeal was limited being a very light straight haired black actor...he died young and his interviews were sort of sad...speaking of limitations he had no control over... too dark for whites to light for blacks
Woody Strode- 1950s on up great build and handsome..played a lot of physical roles warriors, Indian and Asian etc, could pass as 'other' Calvin Lockhart- dark skinned really handsome sharp chiseled features also played in many low budget black films of the 70s. Fred Williamson- very handsome, former NFL player...known to be blunt in his opinions about Hollywood...was pretty successful in European films he produced, especially Italian Action films Harold Rollins, Jr career was cut short when he died of AIDS...did some really great films and a cover on GQ Mag
Speaking of 70S GQ models how about Urs Althaus half Nigerian/half Swiss- first black man to have GQ cover-absolutely beautiful in his day...he's aged well too... in spite of being attacked and beaten almost beyond recognition by German skin heads Another model Renauld White- first black American on GQ cover..very handsome and debonaire.
Just thought I'd bring up some of these guys I drooled over when no one was looking...there are others I'm sure.
BTW how about James Garner and Rod Taylor?

I know Richard Burton was supposed to be the heartthrob in this maudlin movie I saw the other night called "Sea Wife"but I would have MUCH rather been stuck alone on that island with sexy Cy Grant.

R418 Wow! He really is handsome. I'll have to seek out some of his films.

"Cary Grant end of discussion...Tall dark and handsome."
Cary was beautiful, but he was not tall regardless of what Google says. Most of these actors - Brando, Wm Holden, Paul Newman, Robert Redford were all 5'10" or less. Not that there's anything wrong with that...
I could pick a dozen, but I'll go with James Garner. Yes, tall... and a genuinely good actor in addition to the movie star looks.

What's really hot about James Garner is that he's got big low-hangers. You get a nice glimpse of them in the movie Murphy's Romance when he gets out of bed after fucking Sally Field.

R438 Seriously? I think you're dreaming. There's barely implied sex in that PG-13 movie. Only nudity is Brian Kerwin's deliciious ass entering a shower.
