Attention Seth Rogen

YOU ARE NOT FUNNY!

by Anonymousreply 11August 2, 2020 7:45 PM

He's plenty funny.

THE NIGHT BEFORE won't be. THE GUILT TRIP wasn't.

Seth Rogen is funny on screen but a much, much more talented writer. His writing often focuses around subverting traditional concepts of masculinity in straight men. He understands genre really well and loves to toy with conventions. He's not on the level of the south park guys, but similar approach to recognizing something most of us take for granted and then pointing out the ridiculousness of it. South Park guys do it in popular culture, Rogen does it in terms of breaking down movies.

The last shot of THE INTERVIEW (which he also wrote and directed) shows Rogen and Franco on a boat, sailing into the distance, arms around each other. That takes balls especially because the movie wasn't actively about deconstructing masculinity. It's a very transgressive act. This is a $40 million studio comedy. Men are the target audience. Further, it speaks to Rogen's ability to see what's going on in age groups below his. Rogen is in his mid-30's--straight guys his age don't cuddle but the ticket buying audience (teens and younger 20 somethings) do.

PR shill@ R2, Seth Rogen is not funny, not a good actor, and not a good writer. He got plenty lucky and should thank his lucky stars.

Oh, dear...

The things that pass for "transgressive" these days...

by Anonymousreply 4November 17, 2015 10:31 PM

Ha ha Seth! No one likes you!

Whenever I hear/see/read Seth Rogen's name, I tune out and change whatever is bringing it to my attention. Not only not funny but b.o.r.i.n.g.

I like him, but only in a porn sense

[R3] Thanks. I've now been called a PR shill for Truvada, Seth Rogen, and for claiming that an actor presumed to be gay is straight (or at least has sex with lots of women). Either I'm very good or very bad about the way I construct arguments.

Rogen is one of the most bankable actors working today. And it's not because of his good looks. He's not handsome, which may be a deal breaker for many gay guys.

But if you think that Rogen just got lucky, keep in mind, he sold the script for SUPERBAD before KNOCKED UP hit theaters. That was a major sale and a widely admired project because it delivered a specific brand of realism and authenticity to a teen comedy. It was unique and had a lot of heart. It's also at 88% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Rogen was only 23 or 24 when he sold SUPERBAD which is very young for a studio sale. As a writer, Rogen was a staff writer on Sacha Baron Cohen's classic ALI G show. (Not sure if Rogen worked on the movies, but Jonah Hill worked on BORAT and BRUNO). His first movie in a lead role was Knocked Up, which grossed over $100 million, despite the fact absolutely nobody knew who he was. Around that time, Rogen also wrote an episode of THE SIMPSONS.

All of the things discussed here--Rogen had accomplished by the time he was 28. And seven years later, he's still a bankable movie star who now writes and directs his own well reviewed studio movies.

His BFF James Franco is not funny either.

I have no idea how they are so popular.

by Anonymousreply 9November 18, 2015 2:35 AM

God, I'd love to see him play Ned Beatty's part in a remake of "Deliverance." He would be perfect for the role with that chubby, piggy body of his. James Franco would probably be jerking off to the "squeal like a pig" scene that Rogen would be perfect for.
