Black Lives Matter activist Deray Mckesson opens up about being Gay and Black

At Saturday's GLAAD Gala in San Francisco, Black Lives Matter activist and community organizer Deray Mckesson opened up about publicly negotiating his blackness with his identity as a gay man.

Introduced by Empire star and friend Jussie Smollett, Mckesson used the success of the viral #BlackLivesMatter movement to highlight how people can combat stereotypes and false dichotomies surrounding LGBT identities and race -- all while highlighting pervasive violence against black trans-women. Watch his speech below and get ready to RT away.

by Anonymousreply 17November 11, 2015 6:24 PM

He has a psycho look and has been taking advantage of Michael Brown's death since last year. He sends people to protest various white rich people events around St Louis and then posts their videos on twitter and vine.

by Anonymousreply 22November 11, 2015 7:00 PM

For 30 years I have noticed that the police kill black people and are never punished for the murders. It only made me hate cops and despise the injustice. I never grieve for a dead cop.

By the way I am white and I can recognize injustice when I see it.

by Anonymousreply 23November 11, 2015 7:01 PM

He was just arrested by the po po in Louisiana but Beyoncé posted his bail. Drama queen

by Anonymousreply 24July 11, 2016 4:22 AM

does he address the pervasive homophobia in the black community?

by Anonymousreply 25July 11, 2016 4:27 AM

These articles remind me gay Muslims reconciling the fact that they are Muslim and gay. The majority of these groups don't care, they just want gays dead.

by Anonymousreply 26July 11, 2016 4:31 AM

R25 clearly didn't watch the video.

by Anonymousreply 27July 11, 2016 4:33 AM

Is he dating Jack Dorsey?

by Anonymousreply 28July 11, 2016 4:40 AM

Gross.

by Anonymousreply 29July 11, 2016 4:40 AM

BLM ... What do they want? I get that they want police brutality to end, but do they have a plan? As a movement it seems unfocused, reactionary and all over the map. Now the protestors are egging on police, and if any black suspect gets shot in any part of the U.S. under any circumstances then it's another protest? Just posting shit to Twitter and throwing shit at police is not a plan.

by Anonymousreply 30July 11, 2016 4:46 AM

Soros

by Anonymousreply 31July 11, 2016 5:10 AM

Deray is really cute. I'd let him fuck me.

by Anonymousreply 32July 11, 2016 5:19 AM

If he would man up and say once and for all that the narrative of "Hands Up Don't Shoot" from the Mike Brown Ferguson thing I would respet the hell out of him. It would show me that they are keeping it 100.

If they lie about HUDS, what else are they lying about? Yes, it was a catchy slogan, and IF it had been true, there wouldn't be a dead Mike Brown. But it appears that he prefers a good slogan to honesty, and he knows that many of his low info followers don't even realize that it never happened as was first reported.

As Jeh Johnson and Bill Bratton said today, comply with the cops PERIOD. Pursue your grievances later. You know, like MOST white folks do.

by Anonymousreply 33July 11, 2016 8:24 AM

That cunt who has said he thinks of himself as a god....George Soros.

by Anonymousreply 34July 11, 2016 8:33 AM

R23 do you want an award now or something. Shut up queen!

by Anonymousreply 35July 11, 2016 9:56 AM

But what is BLM actually doing to combat racism in the police force and to combat police brutality? Inciting race wars like they're doing now is solving NOTHING!! Getting people to hate cops isn't solving anything. Calling every white bitch out on their "privilege" on social media isn't solving anything. That's NOT activism.

Meet with politicians, lawmakers, police commissioners etc.. Try to get some initiatives and programs in place concerning the hiring of police officers and ethics

by Anonymousreply 36July 11, 2016 10:01 AM

R36, of course they're not going to bother talking to politicians and commissioners - they want all police and prisons abolished, full stop.

Yeah, good luck with that.

by Anonymousreply 37July 11, 2016 10:51 AM

by Anonymousreply 47July 12, 2016 8:02 AM

How is it that there are not DOZENS of threads about Deray McKesson? He is a pivotal Black Lives Matter member and a prolific Twitterer.

And he is GAY. Not bi, but GAY. Where's the love?

by Anonymousreply 48July 14, 2016 2:08 AM

[quote]He is a pivotal Black Lives Matter member and a prolific Twitterer

And that's a good thing?

by Anonymousreply 49July 14, 2016 2:23 AM

I love and follow and communicate with Deray. He is a leader for our times though most of DL won't embrace the BLM movement. McKesson is not our only leader and he is a bit obsessively involved with social media even for me. But people would be wise to follow him. A brilliant, perfectly spoken man, wise, measured and WOKE. He will draw your attention to important matters AND say things that may excite white gays and all men and women to think and act. If he weren't so associated with BLM his credentials and dedication, history and vision would be more fully embraced. Truth is most DL members are just too old and prejudiced to understand. Is black lives matter an imperfect movement? Probably. So was ACT UP and The Freedom Riders.

by Anonymousreply 50July 14, 2016 2:25 AM

Ask Deltay to talk openly about the homophobia in the black community, R50. Until then, I'm not interested.

by Anonymousreply 54July 14, 2016 2:41 AM

Deray's famous calling to gay black men was to urge us to "come out of the quiet." If you are looking for reason's to put a gay activist down and all you can speak to is the existence of homophobia in the black community while pretending it is conquered in your own R51, then you display little interest in being enlightened or understanding our differences. If you think that gay black men are all going to denounce the lord and our mothers AND wild fucking sex you are living a simple life. I am Black. All the gay black men I know are more freely sexual and freely spoken than any white boys, who tend to just whore. Some blacks and hispanics are downlow or bisexual. Sorry if that upsets you so much. Come to Brooklyn. You will never feel so safe or embraced as a gay man. We don't need a parade for you, come see how black gay men live! Leave your moralizing behind. As long as white men don't understand that black men must focus on our race struggle FIRST AND ALWAYS before one's of sexuality, then you will miss out on some of the best minds and leaders in our nation, who represent both entities. BLACK LIVES MATTER. Gays are already here and protected. Always jealous and still whining. DeRay is a hero.

by Anonymousreply 55July 14, 2016 2:46 AM

What a sad bunch of uninspired old fags. Carry on the way you do. DL queers are so out of touch with their time past by, just like everybody says.

by Anonymousreply 61July 14, 2016 7:17 AM

Black gays are at the epicenter of every civil rights movement for change. Not surprising to me that BLM founders are all black lesbians, and its spokesman a black gay man. MLK and the non-violent marches and SCLC was largely orchestrated by one Bayard Rustin, an African American gay man and civil rights activist-largely forgotten by both communities he fought for.

by Anonymousreply 62July 14, 2016 7:31 AM

Miss, with all due respect I have my own problems.

[quote] Black gays are at the epicenter of every civil rights movement for change.

Women's suffrage?

by Anonymousreply 64July 14, 2016 7:34 AM

R64, Well, that would be an exception for obvious reaons, though it could be argued Sojourner Truth was a lesbian.

by Anonymousreply 65July 14, 2016 7:46 AM

maybe black gays would be so kind to spend some time in sub-saharan Africa in the future to help fellow black brethren to improve their horrible...well, pretty much everything when it comes to civil rights. I'd be much impressed with this accomplishment.

by Anonymousreply 66July 14, 2016 7:54 AM

Why would any Black American Man be concerned with impressing you R66? Just because YOU have a glory hole in your front hall doesn't make you a gay rights activist. Shut up ya shut in. White fags used to be good for one thing but we don't even need you for that anymore. Don't bother getting up.

by Anonymousreply 67July 14, 2016 8:30 AM

[R67] er...I am asian who lives in Asia...so. And no, you or any black gays don't need to impressed me but I will keep my right to judge anyone I like by their behavior or their double standards. Frankly, people in pacific Asia generally hold a very low opinion on blacks and I'd like that to change however black americans don't give them too many chances with that much negative news coming out everyday.

by Anonymousreply 68July 14, 2016 8:39 AM

R67 "white fags" Hmmm

by Anonymousreply 69July 14, 2016 8:46 AM

by Anonymousreply 73July 14, 2016 10:17 AM

R61 once again adds a useless post.

by Anonymousreply 74July 14, 2016 10:30 AM

Well I'm white and I love r55's impassioned post. Some of you criticize everything!

I am surprised a thread from 2015 is not even at 100 yet for someone like Deray, who has made strides without significant tv exposure. Has Don Lemon ever had him on his show? One would think Don would be a great advocate for him.

by Anonymousreply 75July 14, 2016 10:36 AM

I also like R55's post and since I have a thing for smart black men I admit I am wondering if he is well-hung. I know I should not admit it but it's what I thought.

by Anonymousreply 76July 14, 2016 3:29 PM

[R76] is a racist who project his fetish based on the stereotype of big black cocks. So muck lacking of self-awareness on display.

by Anonymousreply 77July 14, 2016 3:49 PM

How absurd R77 - even P. Diddy said he had his underwear designed so that there was "room enough for the black man"; besides all you have to do is watch gay porn - or straight porn for that matter - to know black men have much larger penises.

by Anonymousreply 78July 15, 2016 2:10 AM

Deray must be upset that this thread has devolved into a argument about black mens dick size.

He must also be upset that the American media cares more about terror attacks and political unrest in Europe than black people in the US.

by Anonymousreply 79July 16, 2016 1:18 PM

Deray was part of a 4 1/2 hour meeting with Obama this week and was still firmly and eloquently fighting the good fight last night as a guest on Stephen Colbert. DL can continue to degrade and trivialize this movement, but we aren't' going away. Deray is a wonderful and a bit wonky spokesman for not only BLM, but for gay black men. He claims not to be a leader, but he is. I fear for his safety and appreciate him very much.

by Anonymousreply 80July 16, 2016 4:28 PM

He's done nothing for gay people.

by Anonymousreply 81July 16, 2016 4:29 PM

[quote]DL can continue to degrade and trivialize this movement, but we aren't' going away.

That's great news. Incidentally, what are your movement's primary goals?

by Anonymousreply 82July 16, 2016 4:45 PM

[quote] is that what the padded vest is about?

The padded vest is about branding himself. This guy is the biggest starfucker and loves to post selfies with celebs and say they were "talking about the movement". He didn't even show up for the massive BLM march in NYC in the Winter even though he was here. He was too busy "supporting" Netta at her Seventeen magazine photoshoot (ie networking like a motherfucker). Interestingly a lot of BLM people hate him, but he has his crew who will go psycho on his behalf if anyone says it (see Dream Hampton) and white people love him because he's the non-threatening black man of their dreams.

by Anonymousreply 83July 16, 2016 4:58 PM

DeRay McKesson Lives in Home Owned by Wealthy Law Student

When Black Lives Matter activist DeRay McKesson isn’t leading protest marches, he lives comfortably in a home provided by wealthy donors.

McKesson was arrested last weekend during a protest in Louisiana. His booking sheet shows his home address is a house on a leafy street in suburban Baltimore.

The 2,808 Sq. ft. 2 bedroom, 2.5 bathroom home is owned by James and Robin Wood, who are wealthy donors to George Soros’ Open Society Institute.
