ATM giving out money other than twenties?

I've never seen ATM which gives out any other denomination but twenty. Have you?

Oh and I mean American money, no one cares about stupid money like Euros

by Anonymousreply 57April 5, 2020 11:44 PM

Drop dead.

by Anonymousreply 1November 5, 2015 4:32 AM

I have seen tens. Not sure about fives ......

by Anonymousreply 2November 5, 2015 4:37 AM

I've gotten $50 at bank ATMs.

by Anonymousreply 3November 5, 2015 4:39 AM

Fives and tens

by Anonymousreply 4November 5, 2015 4:41 AM

I know of one which gives fifties or twenties.

by Anonymousreply 5November 5, 2015 5:25 AM

BofA gives out 50s and 20s. I've been to other banks that give out tens. But never anything smaller.

TIP: Take a bunch of extra 20s with you next time you go to a casino (Indian or otherwise). Almost all have bill-changing machines now. Whenever I go, I stock up on fives and ones.

by Anonymousreply 6November 5, 2015 5:45 AM

I feel like I used to be able to get tens back in the very early days of ATMs but now twenties are the standard. Except in NYC where fifties seem to be the norm. It seems stupid, like that old SNL sketch, but I feel like someone could make a fortune with kiosks that could change large bills.

I worked in one of the first ATM departments in New Hampshire back in the day. Yes, I'm an eldergay. Our machines gave out 10s and 20s. Some of the other ones in the network gave out 5s and 20s. One bank (St Mary's Bank) would give exact change - it's the only one I've ever seen in the country. Now, I"m in Las Vegas and some of the machines give out 100s, 50s, and 20s.

by Anonymousreply 8November 5, 2015 6:43 AM

100s are pretty standard in casino ATM

by Anonymousreply 9November 5, 2015 6:48 AM

Not just casinos, r9; local bank atms as well.

by Anonymousreply 10November 5, 2015 6:52 AM

OP - euros may be "stupid" and swiss francs may be ridiculous - but this is another weird sign that the USA can be rinky dinky. ATMs spit out 200 franc bills in switzerland if you ask - thats 200 bucks. You can give a 200 bill or a 1000 bill to a cashier and she won't make a stink - may check to see if its real but even that, not always. Would never ask for smaller.

by Anonymousreply 11November 5, 2015 6:58 AM

A while back I heard that they were working on an ATM that would dispense whatever you wanted -- $14,53, for example, or $56.29.

by Anonymousreply 12November 5, 2015 1:45 PM

Yes, OP, I have traveled more than 20 miles from my home. Actually, the bodega across the street gives 10s and the atm downtown will dispense any denomination, including singles. If I need a five and some ones to make change I can just withdraw $9 and get a five and 4 ones.

by Anonymousreply 13November 5, 2015 1:50 PM

Sorry, meant to say the atm at my bank branch downtown.

by Anonymousreply 14November 5, 2015 1:51 PM

I've had ones give me a choice of 100's, 50's and 20's. But not in the last couple decades.

by Anonymousreply 15November 5, 2015 1:56 PM

European ATMs give you proper change - 50 euros as 20, two tens, two fives.

In related news, Americans really are dumber than tree stumps.

by Anonymousreply 16November 5, 2015 1:57 PM

[quote]ATMs spit out 200 franc bills in switzerland if you ask - thats 200 bucks. You can give a 200 bill or a 1000 bill to a cashier and she won't make a stink

Because American dollars are THE DEFACTO world currency. No one is gonna waste time counterfeiting a Swiss Franc. So why don't you go back to financing Nazis

by Anonymousreply 17November 5, 2015 2:23 PM

Where are you all that you get these weird denominations? I haven't seen any.

by Anonymousreply 18November 5, 2015 2:23 PM

[quote]I feel like someone could make a fortune with kiosks that could change large bills.

Not a bad idea in theory but in practice it fails. First of all it's extremely labor intensive. You need someone to prepare the money, someone to change out the money and security while that change out is going on.

The Chicago Transit Authority, years ago, used to put change machines, so you could get dollar coins to ride. These things were constantly getting vandalized, then the thieves just found it easier to make off with the entire machine in a truck. Of course the CTA employees never saw a thing happen. Of course they can't spot 20 people smoking on a subway platform at one time.

by Anonymousreply 19November 5, 2015 2:26 PM

I'm in Philly, R18. I'm the guy whose bank atm gives out 20s, 10s, 5s and 1s. It's PNC bank and I'm pretty sure any atm at a center city branch dispenses any denomination in those bills, including singles.

I've never had at atm give 50s or 100s. That would annoy me, since I really only use cash to buy pot, rounds at bars, settle split checks, or occasionally hail a cab. Everything else is plastic and I rely more on Uber now, so I don't like withdrawing huge amounts of cash. Even though I sometimes make 3 -figure purchases, I don't think my pot dealer would appreciate 100s.

by Anonymousreply 20November 5, 2015 2:29 PM

Chase machines give out denominations as requested by the account holder.

by Anonymousreply 21November 5, 2015 2:37 PM

In the mid-1980s, I used to go to an ATM that gave out $5 bills. But I haven't seen that in years. Most of the ones I've used give $20.

I was in Israel a few years ago and used an ATM that would give Israeli Shekels or US Dollars, whichever you preferred.

by Anonymousreply 22November 5, 2015 2:44 PM

My first bank -- Bay Bank Middlesex -- started by giving $5 or $20s but ended that very soon, given all the students piling in for $5 bills (which paid for pizza and beer, easy)

by Anonymousreply 23November 5, 2015 2:55 PM

In NYC bodegas you can get 10s. Never seen it anywhere else.

by Anonymousreply 24April 5, 2020 3:19 AM

Why, Bump Bitch? Why?

by Anonymousreply 25April 5, 2020 3:19 AM

I was going to post that, R9.

If you take out anything over $100, all you will get are $100 bills.

Otherwise, you get 50's and 20's.

by Anonymousreply 26April 5, 2020 3:22 AM

My ATM gives hundreds.

Of course, I have to blow him first.

by Anonymousreply 27April 5, 2020 3:22 AM

Yes, my drive-up ATM near my house gives $50s if you requests money in an amount divisible by 50.

by Anonymousreply 28April 5, 2020 3:22 AM

Bank of America has two ATMs near me that gives tens, twenties, and hundreds.

by Anonymousreply 29April 5, 2020 3:26 AM

Wells Fargo gives out 20s, 50s. Inside the branch there is an ATM that gives out all denominations so you don’t have to wait in line to see the teller.

by Anonymousreply 30April 5, 2020 3:29 AM

My bank's ATM (Bank of the West) gives you whatever denomination you ask for.

by Anonymousreply 31April 5, 2020 3:37 AM

It's about to get even more thrilling, R28: When all I have is twenty dollar bills and I want some smaller denominations, I go to a supermarket that has a self-service checkout stand and I buy something that costs only $1 or $5 and pay with a twenty -- then my change consists of tens, fives, and ones!

by Anonymousreply 32April 5, 2020 3:37 AM

Bank of America ATMs let you choose: $100, $20, $10 ...

by Anonymousreply 33April 5, 2020 3:38 AM

Fives, tens and fifties at Bank of the West ATMs

by Anonymousreply 34April 5, 2020 3:39 AM

R32! I did that one time! It was awesome!

by Anonymousreply 35April 5, 2020 3:40 AM

While it can vary by ATM, on paper TD bank machines offer everything from $5 to $50, and some even giving $100.

Small bills matter to some people who don't have limited resources to extent that sometimes they only have ten or so dollars actual cash in account. Balance of funds are spoken for by either checks not yet deposited and other debits that are coming but haven't hit their account yet.

[quote]Fives, tens and fifties at Bank of the West ATMs

Not to mention the ubiquitous twenties.

by Anonymousreply 37April 5, 2020 3:46 AM

My bank gives out $100 bills. It's fucking crazy. It allows you to pick what you want. They give you the choice of

fewest bills, mixed, customize

The first time I took out money out of the new ATM machine I took out $120 and it gave me a $100 and a $20

If you are getting more than $100 and you pick fewest bills, you're getting a $100. And "fewest bills" is the default. I'm in a small town outside of Atlanta. None of the stores take $100s. I was so pissed. I had to take out more fucking money and then when I went to deposit the $100 in the bank on Monday they acted like it was counterfeit and checked it two different ways

by Anonymousreply 38April 5, 2020 3:48 AM

Hundred dollar bills are famous for being counterfeit; which is why many retail places won't accept, or will try very hard not to do so .

They are also used in money laundering (easier to move about sums in thousands by 100 dollar bills versus smaller denominations), which also give some retailers pause over accepting as well. Especially of person offering to pay with such money is a member of a minority group (AA or Latino-Hispanic).

by Anonymousreply 39April 5, 2020 3:57 AM

Awesome ideed R35! And another thing: If you want some coins, you can buy something that costs an uneven amount -- like French bread @ $1.49 -- and you'll get at least 4 pennies in your change, plus probably a quarter and either two dimes or a dime and two nickels!

by Anonymousreply 40April 5, 2020 3:59 AM

Most of the ATMs around me only give out $20s.

by Anonymousreply 41April 5, 2020 4:00 AM

Citibank gives out $50s and $10s in addition to $20s.

OP - you type poor...and fat, naturally.

by Anonymousreply 42April 5, 2020 4:06 AM

I’ve gotten a $50 bill from a Wells Fargo machine.

by Anonymousreply 43April 5, 2020 4:08 AM

It's Saturday night, you guys. I know we're quarantined in the midst of a plague, but is this really all there is?

by Anonymousreply 44April 5, 2020 4:11 AM

This thread was started over four years ago. I wonder if the OP is still a raging cunt.

by Anonymousreply 45April 5, 2020 5:21 AM

Eh? If French bread is $1.49, you're only going to get one penny back, regardless of what denomination you tender for payment. The only way you'd get four pennies back would be if the bread were $1.46.

by Anonymousreply 46April 5, 2020 8:53 AM

R43 If you are a Wells Fargo customer, can you explain why that bank is having such long drive thru lines during this crisis? I haven't seen such lines at any other bank, yet at WF they had to have a cop directing traffic. It looks like a bank run.

by Anonymousreply 47April 5, 2020 5:09 PM

Citizens Bank’s new machines lets you choose 5s, 10s, and 20s — up to 30 bills.

by Anonymousreply 48April 5, 2020 5:25 PM

In NYC Citibank gives out multiple denominations in my neighborhood. The big ATMS inside the branches that they've installed in front of the tellers give out singles if you select it.

Some of the bodega ATMS near me give out 10s if you select an odd amount like $50, but I don't think you can choose to get $200 in tens.

by Anonymousreply 49April 5, 2020 5:29 PM

I just returned from Europe, mostly lived in Scotland for four years but traveled to most of the other countries. While traveling, with some exceptions, I didn't need to use cash. I used Google Pay and sometimes a credit card. Nice to see that the U.S. is starting to catch up with the rest of the world but still find places that still require cash.

If I never needed to use cash again, that would be okay with me. Hopefully, one day there will be no need for ATMs.

by Anonymousreply 50April 5, 2020 6:14 PM

The Wells Fargo ATM that I use in North Carolina gives us a choice of 50s and 20s depending on the amount you ask for when you withdraw funds.

by Anonymousreply 51April 5, 2020 8:30 PM

Banks have been moving for some time away from teller transactions; between online, app and various new ATM functions the actual need to use a teller has greatly diminished. This is good news for banks because obviously they can get by with fewer tellers, which lowers costs.

With so many banks closing branches entirely, and or only having reduced hours for those still open, there is again anther push to online, app, telephone or ATM use.

Giving cash in more denominations than the standard $20 of old is just common sense if you want to reduce need for seeing tellers.

by Anonymousreply 52April 5, 2020 10:37 PM

Some Chase ATMs give out smaller increments. $5 and in some cases $1 increments.

by Anonymousreply 53April 5, 2020 10:39 PM

[quote] If you are a Wells Fargo customer, can you explain why that bank is having such long drive thru lines during this crisis?

Wells Fargo is a huge bank and has agreements with smaller banks and credit unions. The customers of these smaller banks and credit unions are able to use the Wells Fargo ATMs without a transaction fee. That's my guess. Also, people want cash during crises.

by Anonymousreply 54April 5, 2020 10:57 PM

R54 I guess that could partly explain it, but all the other banks and credit unions in my area are still open, atms and drive thru. Yet, it is only Wells Fargo that has the crazy lines. I only noticed because their branch is connected to the parking lot at the grocery store I go to, and the line on Friday reached well into the store's parking lot and they had at least three police officers directing traffic.

by Anonymousreply 55April 5, 2020 11:03 PM

A lot of ATMs in Canada don't just have $50 bills, you can choose what bills you get, from $5 to $100.

by Anonymousreply 56April 5, 2020 11:05 PM

R55, smaller banks and credit unions don't have many, convenient locations for their ATMs. Wells Fargo has locations galore. My checking account is at a credit union, but I have never used its ATMs, too inconvenient, location-wise. I go to a major bank's ATM (no transaction fee).
