Tasteful Friends, please help me out here

Can someone please tell me what style the Hotel Cortez on American Horror Story - Hotel is designed/decorated in?

Do you know of any hotels that look similar? (same style)

Is the furniture in the same style as the hotel?

I've never had much interest in design or architecture or decorating but after binge watching the three episodes already aired, I'm love with just about everything including most of the furniture.

Many thanks.

Art Deco

by Anonymousreply 2October 28, 2015 8:28 AM

Art Deco - popular design around the 1920s-30s. The interior reminds me of The Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles which was built around that time.

by Anonymousreply 3October 28, 2015 8:32 AM

There are so many art deco hotels, but they don't necessarily look like Cortez. South Beach is full of them; the Plaza Hotel and the Waldorf Astoria in NY; Claridges, the Savoy, the Beaumont in London, and on and on. The Peace Hotel in Shanghai is my favorite.

The Cortez bar reminds me of the bar at the Chatwal in NY.

This is the set decorator's Pinterest, OP, if you want to see her inspirations. The art deco, bar, and glam boards, in particular.

It's northern art deco, which could find influences in the gothic, Byzantine, Mesopotamian, Egyptian. Bauhaus and modernism was present at the same time as Deco and produced "streamlined" Deco that one sees in southern locals in USA, Israel, Northern Africa, etc. There is also streamlined deco in European cities, from 30's, and even after the war - 50's, particularly for middle-class apartment houses, because lack of rich surfaces and finishes suited the budget.

OP are you 12? How does somebody seriously not recognize Art Deco?

The Cortez is largely a duplicate of the Cicada Restaurant in the Oviatt Building in Los Angeles, with the carpets ripped off from The Shining.

by Anonymousreply 8October 28, 2015 10:47 AM

The design also incorporates elements of The Gold Room in The Shining

OP, the Art Deco furniture is too expensive for mortals. It's gorgeous, though.

by Anonymousreply 11October 28, 2015 10:58 AM

I'm not sure the carpet and furniture is Art Deco. The building structure clearly is. What do you say about the furnishings?

by Anonymousreply 12October 28, 2015 10:59 AM

The carpets and furnishings are ripped off from The Shining, if you bothered to look at the photo at r9.

There were so many old movie theatres (or movie palaces as they were called) in LA that were neglected for decades, some declined into movie theaters for porno. It wasn't until the 1990s that they were made historical landmarks and are now restored to their original glory.

Art Deco was beautiful. I wish it would be revived as an architectural model.

Is Streamline Moderne sort of an offshoot of Art Deco, or is there some overlap?

by Anonymousreply 22October 28, 2015 4:53 PM

The AHS Coven house was pretty cool too. I'm not sure what you'd call that either. The set designers said they did a lot of research in New Orleans and came up with this... because it was common to have light floors and walls with contrasted dark furniture. It's sort of French inspired, but has it's own look. Some of it reminds me of a Restoration Hardware catalog. I actually liked the moldings and structure more than the furniture though. And the scale was really cool - high ceilings, dramatic big rooms.

More Coven

One other interesting thing is that they said a lot was found at antique shops and restored with paint or re-upholstered. I'd still imagine the base price would be high + the cost to refinish... but I suppose it would be less than an $800 chair.

The curtains must have cost tens of thousands... some look 24' tall and maybe 6 feet wide (on the stairs). The rest are 12' tall.

I think the light floors are cool with the light rugs - a very different look from the dated tan color or the dark brown that everyone is putting in now.

Isn't the Coven house the same one they're using as the sorority house in "Scream Queens?"

by Anonymousreply 25October 28, 2015 5:32 PM

Moderne was basd off the styles on vehicles of the period (like steamship moderne if after ships or zephyr moderne after trains). The emphasis was clean lines and aerodynamic styling.

In particular, if I had to assign a name to a subsection of art deco, i would call this theater Mayan Revival, which is indeed a recognized style.

Of course since it is the "Cortez" hotel, it should be Aztec revival, but I don't see any Aztec elements.

Many of you are posting pictures of movie palaces and hotels that ARE NOT ART DECO design.

by Anonymousreply 32October 28, 2015 10:28 PM

There is one idiot on here who is doing it. I ignored him and half the posts on the thread disappeared.

The Los Angeles Theater is Roccoco. The Orpheum Theater is Beaux-Arts. The Biltmore is Beaux-Arts. The Roosevelt is Spanish Revival. The Coven interiors are Hollywood Regency.

I swear to God, we had a thread about Art Deco a year or two ago, and one idiot kept posting picture after picture of buildings which were the farthest thing from Art Deco. I wonder if this is the same idiot, in this thread.

by Anonymousreply 33October 28, 2015 10:58 PM

Speaking of Aztec (although I think this is actually Mayan, despite the name.)

Ohhhhh spooky! In 1989, the dilapidated Boston opera house had a gay rave. It was really fun! I met my best friend for the first time on a street corner on the way there. Yes, it's true! Now the theater is refurnished and I am not. The interior was Art Deco, I think, and very spooky. Decrepit and opera and Holloween and *sign*

Does R23/R24 have a particular style label? That was their season 3...which I liked more than the Hotel styling.

by Anonymousreply 37October 29, 2015 1:18 AM

Yes - the Orpheum aren't remotely Deco, nor is the Hollywood Roosevelt. The Pantages is classic Deco. The Union Depot in Cincy is a great example of Deco. The hotel ballroom (ow a Hilton) has been very well preserved.

The interiors of the Hotel Cortez are indeed largely based on the interiors of the fictional Hotel Overlook in Kubrick's The Shining, which were entirely built on a soundstage in England. The latter were based on the interiors of the real-life Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite National Park in California, which were themselves built in the "Mayan Revival" substyle of Art Deco in 1927.

So r27/r28 is correct: they are in the Mayan Revival style, which is a substyle of Art Deco.

Moderne furniture is low slung, with curves andvthe pieces are heavier than fuck.

Partners in Crime featured a few Deco scenes. "The Moderns" made some cheesy attempts as well. "The RItz" featuredvsome Deco.

The wonderful skyscapercity forums have a whole section devoted to Art Deco. They too nail posters who confuse art deco design with beaux arts or neoclassical or art nouveau or spanish colonial or....... I've put in a link.

Also, in 2000, Parkview Square office building in Singapore was opened. It is classic art deco and is the only current art deco building that I know of opened in this century. The locals call it The Batman Building because of its similarity to the Gotham vibe in the Batman movies. Google it.

r44 I would call that Streamline Moderne -- it's like the old May Co. bldg. on Wilshire and Fairfax, or the Hecht Co. warehouse on NY Ave. in DC.

by Anonymousreply 45October 29, 2015 3:52 PM

R37 - the house in Coven is the Buckner Mansion. One would generally call this Antebellum, which is neo-classical with Palladian borrowings.

by Anonymousreply 46October 29, 2015 3:57 PM

R25 - you really must develop your eye. The Scream Queens house - interiors - is a divine dreamlike set - its ersatz Federal with doses of Dorothy Draper contemporary Rococo.

by Anonymousreply 47October 29, 2015 4:01 PM

Yes R47 - I think the set design on Scream queens is outstanding. I see it as Hollywood Regency rendered in grey scale - but that's pretty similar to your take.

by Anonymousreply 48October 29, 2015 4:27 PM

This isn't the same style, but it's weird how it's basically the same floor plan as the lobby of the Kitano in NYC.

by Anonymousreply 51February 10, 2021 4:10 AM

The set design of the Hotel Cortez is a pastiche of streamline deco, bauhaus, with huge dollops of Hollywood Rergency via Dorothy Draper. It's pared down Draper, in the halls and lobby. The doctor's main office international style and bauhaus among other influences - included just a kind of surrealism.
