Movie sequels that surpassed the original?

We all know terrible movie sequels, but are there any film sequels that were actually better than the original film?

Examples?

by Anonymousreply 49June 6, 2020 6:27 PM

Mad max 2

by Anonymousreply 1October 26, 2015 7:44 PM

Godfather II

Empire Strikes Back

by Anonymousreply 2October 26, 2015 7:45 PM

I wouldn't say that surpassed but I have always liked the Empire Strikes Back better than Star Wars.

by Anonymousreply 3October 26, 2015 7:46 PM

"The Godfather: Part II" is the obvious answer here.

by Anonymousreply 4October 26, 2015 8:07 PM

r1 I'd agree on the second Mad Max; it gets show on TV much more than the others. "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" is a contender, or at least it is the best of the "Vacation" sequels. I'm not including/excluding the reboot since I haven't seen it.

by Anonymousreply 5October 26, 2015 8:16 PM

Godfather II

by Anonymousreply 6October 26, 2015 8:34 PM

I liked Xanadu 2 but I missed Olivia.

by Anonymousreply 7October 26, 2015 9:20 PM

I like "After the Thin Man" better than the first one.

by Anonymousreply 8October 28, 2015 4:09 AM

Showgirls 2: Pennies from Heaven

by Anonymousreply 9October 28, 2015 4:15 AM

The Silence of the Lambs.

by Anonymousreply 10October 28, 2015 4:17 AM

Dawson's 100-Load Labor Day

by Anonymousreply 11October 28, 2015 4:18 AM

Toy Story 2, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, X-Men 2

by Anonymousreply 12October 28, 2015 4:21 AM

Many people say ALIENS, but I disagree. Both are great, but I prefer the claustrophobic horror of the first to the action of the second.

by Anonymousreply 13October 28, 2015 4:22 AM

The Dark Knight

by Anonymousreply 14October 28, 2015 4:23 AM

Not necessarily better but I always preferred The Jewel of the Nile. I think it has a lot to do with the music videos and I very much associated them with my childhood.

by Anonymousreply 15October 28, 2015 4:25 AM

Grease 2

by Anonymousreply 16October 28, 2015 4:26 AM

Lethal Weapon 2

by Anonymousreply 17October 28, 2015 4:58 AM

Maybe not better, but just as good:

Damien: Omen II

by Anonymousreply 18October 28, 2015 5:13 PM

ALIEN and ALIENS are two very different films (the latter is really a war movie), but I love them both.

by Anonymousreply 19October 28, 2015 5:28 PM

"Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan"

by Anonymousreply 20October 28, 2015 5:30 PM

Batman Returns is far more entertaining and interesting than Batman.

Michelle Pfieffer elevates everyone around her in it, including Michael Keaton.

by Anonymousreply 21October 28, 2015 5:32 PM

People say Godfather II because sequels are notoriously horrid, however the two films are truly on equal standing and should be viewed as one big epic split in to two halves.

by Anonymousreply 22October 30, 2015 1:01 AM

Aliens!

by Anonymousreply 23October 30, 2015 1:02 AM

Can't think of a single one.

by Anonymousreply 24June 4, 2020 5:23 AM

I know for years The Godfather Part II was one of the most common answers but for me, I find it a bit of a slog to get through. It's still a good film but I think the first film is still superior.

by Anonymousreply 25June 4, 2020 5:33 AM

The Conners

by Anonymousreply 26June 4, 2020 6:02 AM

Superman II

by Anonymousreply 27June 4, 2020 6:17 AM

I notoriously love the second book in a trilogy or series so it’s no surprise that I might enjoy the sequels. It’s nice because the world building is foundational and your familiar with the characters so you can move plot along at a faster pace and have more twists since your dealing with a longer history. So I was excited to see the world presented for the first time in film for the Hunger Games, but the twists and turns of Catching Fire made it more exciting for me as a story and film.

by Anonymousreply 28June 4, 2020 6:31 AM

Arthur II: On the Rocks

by Anonymousreply 29June 4, 2020 6:34 AM

Kill Billl vol,2

by Anonymousreply 30June 4, 2020 6:41 AM

I thought Beverly Hills Cop II was as good as the first movie.

by Anonymousreply 31June 4, 2020 6:42 AM

I enjoyed Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade more than Raiders of the Lost Ark.

by Anonymousreply 32June 4, 2020 6:47 AM

I enjoy Temple of Doom more than the other two. It's a darker, funnier, and more vibrant film.

by Anonymousreply 33June 4, 2020 12:26 PM

Superman II.

by Anonymousreply 34June 4, 2020 12:32 PM

Fuck. How old are you people?

by Anonymousreply 35June 6, 2020 6:23 AM

Sister act 2

by Anonymousreply 36June 6, 2020 6:31 AM

Kill Bill Vol ll

Superman ll

Star Trek ll: The Wrath of Kahn

Godfather ll

by Anonymousreply 37June 6, 2020 6:49 AM

A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors.

This was the film that MADE Freddy.

by Anonymousreply 38June 6, 2020 9:35 AM

Toy Story 3 was better than 1 & 2.

Shrek 2 .

by Anonymousreply 39June 6, 2020 10:02 AM

Addams Family Values

A Very Brady Sequel

by Anonymousreply 40June 6, 2020 10:18 AM

Has anyone seen The Godfather Part 2?

by Anonymousreply 41June 6, 2020 10:23 AM

If the sequel is better, then why don't they just make that one the original and forget the original original?

by Anonymousreply 42June 6, 2020 10:26 AM

Terminator 2

by Anonymousreply 43June 6, 2020 11:05 AM

R42, all jokes aside, they’ve actually done this before. Missing in Action 2 was filmed after the first one was shot but before it was released. The studio Cannon thought the sequel was the better film, so they released that one first and marketed the original as a prequel.

by Anonymousreply 44June 6, 2020 11:38 AM

SVU is way better than the original L&O

by Anonymousreply 45June 6, 2020 11:58 AM

r3, that's what immediately came to mind

by Anonymousreply 46June 6, 2020 11:59 AM

Terminator 2 Judgment Day.

by Anonymousreply 47June 6, 2020 12:08 PM

Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior

by Anonymousreply 48June 6, 2020 3:22 PM

Looks who’s talking 2
