Straight Dudes who call guys "Baby"

Has anyone noticed how many more straight or non-gay dudes today are calling other guys "baby?" I have noticed that these guys saying this tend to be disproportionately urban, African American, and Latin. A lot of "hip hop" type White guys are doing the same. Today, in my gym, one of the African American male personal trainers saw me an said "wassup up, baby." Other guys at the gym have said the same to me a lot lately, especially black guys. I have also heard them say it as a greeting to other guys or in passing conversation to other dudes such as, "That's wassup, baby!" I would never admit it in person, but it turns me on when a hot straight guy calls me "baby."

by Anonymousreply 180September 17, 2020 7:46 PM

I've seen my 15 year-old first cousin once removed (formerly identifying as bisexual but now identifying as straight) refer to his male best friend as "bae" on Facebook.

by Anonymousreply 1October 25, 2015 10:49 PM

I forgot to mention, he's a white punk.

by Anonymousreply 2October 25, 2015 10:50 PM

r1, one day, after he gets out out jail and he's in his early 30s, you will invite him over for some beers. I foresee happy endings for both of you.

by Anonymousreply 3October 25, 2015 11:31 PM

I'm old so I can get away with calling straight youngsters "baby" or "shorty".

You can't use "sweetie" or anything involving the concept of "sweet" because it implies they are effeminate and they think that's a bad thing.

by Anonymousreply 4October 25, 2015 11:41 PM

I would LOVE to call youngsters 'shorty' but I'm white.

by Anonymousreply 5October 25, 2015 11:46 PM

I've been called "Cracker" before.

by Anonymousreply 6October 25, 2015 11:51 PM

I was called a 'Carpetbagger' once.

by Anonymousreply 7October 25, 2015 11:52 PM

I was called a carpet-muncher once. Hold on, I think I might be in the wrong thread. Carry on.

by Anonymousreply 8October 25, 2015 11:57 PM

R8, I'll bet you munch like a trooper, honey.

by Anonymousreply 9October 25, 2015 11:59 PM

Straight dudes usually call me "faggot".

by Anonymousreply 10October 26, 2015 12:03 AM

"I would never admit it in person, but it turns me on when a hot straight guy calls me "baby."

Pardon me while I barf up my dinner.

You really are the stereotypical simpering, silly queen, OP. Kudos.

by Anonymousreply 11October 26, 2015 12:21 AM

Black guys have referred to other men, especially other black men, as 'baby' for decades. No gay inference as far as I can remember.

by Anonymousreply 12October 26, 2015 1:20 AM

Yeah, I usually get called "faggot".

by Anonymousreply 13October 26, 2015 1:52 AM

Yes, men calling other men baby goes back to the 70s in a widespread way, mainly among Black men. It was part of street macho suave talk that many Black guys did in the 70s. Currently, hip hop and urban culture have made it even more prevalent as a way for men to express swagger, endearment, and affection toward other dudes. However, in this way, only Alpha Males can use it confidently, and as such, there are times when its usage can seem like the Alpha Male is trying to insinuate that another guy is the Beta Male or is more diminutive than he is. Also, there is a perception that some guys are so suave and have so much swag that they even pour on the charm with other males by calling them baby or other similar maneuvers. These guys are securely viewed as masculine, so they don't have people questioning their manhood when they do it. Perhaps, because of the pervasiveness of hip hop among youth, I have noticed more White and Hispanic men doing the same lately. Urban culture is very interesting.

by Anonymousreply 14October 26, 2015 2:52 AM

Curiously, I'm watching a rerun of "Hill Street Blues," circa 1983, while perusing the DL.

Taurean Blaque's character, black detective Neal Washington, just now called Kiel Martin's character, white detective J. D. LaRue, "Baby."

So this was going on at least 32 years ago, dolls.

by Anonymousreply 15October 26, 2015 2:53 AM

Don't call me baby

by Anonymousreply 16October 26, 2015 2:57 AM

Who loves ya, baby?

by Anonymousreply 17October 26, 2015 3:10 AM

Babe and baby as used to describe a romantic partner (rather than a small child or immature person; those usages began in the 1400s and 1500s) can be traced to usage that began in the 19th and 20th centuries in America. Initially, the words were simply used as a form of address (men were calling each other baby in 1835, sans any romantic connotations; in the 1996 movie Swingers, Vince Vaughn's character employs the word for just about everybody).

by Anonymousreply 18October 26, 2015 3:11 AM

Nobody puts Baby in the corner.

Young Thug Speaks On Gay Rumors & Why He Calls His Male Friends 'Bae'

Young Thug has been running the music industry with his features. If you haven't heard about his music, we're pretty sure you've heard about Young Thug calling his male friends "Bae" and "Lover". While the world was now questioning his sexuality, he set the record straight with Bossip. During his interview, his nonchalantly stated he was not gay and it’s just a "Language."

It's not meant as a complment when they call you Baby Huey, I find.

by Anonymousreply 23October 26, 2015 3:43 AM

I prefer it when they call me "slut" and "tramp"

by Anonymousreply 24October 26, 2015 3:49 AM

This immediately made me think of Vince Vaughn's character in Swingers.

"Hip hop is wide open."

Kinda like an open 'bae' window?

by Anonymousreply 28October 26, 2015 4:00 AM

Some of my straight male friends call me "bae." It is quite endearing.

by Anonymousreply 29October 26, 2015 4:06 AM

they call me "fay"

by Anonymousreply 30October 26, 2015 4:25 AM

I like calling everyone "Baby" in that Kojack/Telly Savalas way, which was the ultimate in 70s cool.

by Anonymousreply 31October 26, 2015 4:54 AM

I'm usually called sweet ass or sweet bae or sweet pee(I think they say that last one) by these guys at the gym. I just always figured they knew I was gay and were having some fun with it and me. I call them sweet ass or sweet thighs or sweet abs back.

by Anonymousreply 32October 26, 2015 5:47 AM

Don't you DARE talkin' to him like that!

by Anonymousreply 33October 26, 2015 7:42 AM

'I call them sweet ass or sweet thighs or sweet abs back.'

Sling that sass, baby!

by Anonymousreply 34October 26, 2015 8:11 AM

I noticed that white guys are more likely to call a dude "babe," whereas Black and Latin guys are more likely to say "baby."

by Anonymousreply 35October 26, 2015 2:33 PM

My African American barber and other Black dudes have called me "baby boy." I like that.

by Anonymousreply 36October 26, 2015 3:26 PM

I call my friends "bb" in texts all the time, and no one has told me to cut it the hell out. Yet, anyway.

by Anonymousreply 37October 26, 2015 3:46 PM

by Anonymousreply 43November 10, 2015 10:38 PM

You can say anything to a dude, as long as you deliver it in a masculine manner. I have dudes in the gym compliment my body all the time, but they do it in a "dudely" way. For instance, a straight muscle dude told me the other day, "Bro, your bod is looking straight up diesel lately. Keep it up, baby!" That is how dudes deliver endearment and admiration.

by Anonymousreply 44November 11, 2015 4:06 PM

Young Thug aint ugly.

by Anonymousreply 45November 11, 2015 4:06 PM

I get moist down there when sexy brickhouse mo'fo brothers say "wassup, bitch?" because I am a cheap whore, darling.

by Anonymousreply 49November 17, 2015 2:06 PM

by Anonymousreply 50November 17, 2015 2:11 PM

by Anonymousreply 51November 17, 2015 5:18 PM

by Anonymousreply 59November 21, 2015 9:23 PM

I shoot hoops with a couple of straight dudes who call me "baby" quite a bit, even when we play football. It is very hot.

by Anonymousreply 60November 22, 2015 12:16 AM

A hot muscle bro at the gym calls me "boss." Yokes me up everytime he says it.

by Anonymousreply 61December 12, 2015 5:26 PM

If straight men didn't need sex, they wouldn't go near women. Men like men, straight or gay.

by Anonymousreply 62December 12, 2015 7:21 PM

by Anonymousreply 63December 14, 2015 12:30 PM

by Anonymousreply 66December 14, 2015 1:54 PM

by Anonymousreply 67December 14, 2015 2:19 PM

I agree

by Anonymousreply 68December 14, 2015 2:24 PM

Most people here are so out of touch mainstream mass youth culture that they should be disqualified from commenting. They didn't even know what "bae" meant.

by Anonymousreply 69December 14, 2015 2:50 PM

There is this one black guy on this free chat line that I call for some phone sex relief.... he starts calling me boy ( the dynamic of him calling a white guy, me, "boy" is so sexy to me), and my cock gets so damn rigid and wet. Language can indeed be a powerful thing. Then we coach each other thru eating our own precum and showing off our bate to each other.

by Anonymousreply 70December 14, 2015 5:04 PM

Uh, okay, bro

by Anonymousreply 71December 16, 2015 12:53 PM

It is quite common among a certain subset of young hip hop dudes. Young Thug calls dudes "sweetheart" and "bae." SOme of yall are so clueless about youth and hip hop culture.

by Anonymousreply 72December 17, 2015 1:28 PM

"I shoot hoops with a couple of straight dudes who call me "baby" quite a bit, even when we play football. It is very hot."

R60's imagination is in overdrive, desperately trying to come up with beat-off material.

by Anonymousreply 73December 17, 2015 2:04 PM

Ironically, hip hop and urban culture allows men to use terms of endearment with each other more than White male culture. "Bro" is the closest thing white guys have.

by Anonymousreply 74December 18, 2015 3:39 PM

'Some of yall are so clueless about youth and hip hop culture.'

Well now, really. For white gentlemen in our 60's and 70's, we are more 'with it' than most, young man.

I don't know any thugs myself.

by Anonymousreply 77December 18, 2015 5:34 PM

I like it when straight men call me "kitten" or "princess."

by Anonymousreply 78December 18, 2015 5:35 PM

Yea right, straight guys don't call other guys bae/baby/hunny/, not unless they have a death wish or want to be outcasted.

I live in Canada, Ontario and I swear to god I've never consciously or unconsciously heard a man use that kind of language towards another.

by Anonymousreply 79December 22, 2015 10:10 PM

I was talking to a young, thuggish Hispanic dude today and I had the pleasure of making him laugh. We were about to go our separate ways, and he says "I fucks with you". Now Im glad I've heard this slang before, so I know it's no homo. But if his tired girlfriend was not several feet away, hell yes I would've acted like he was trying to come on to me. I know I could've snagged him and his gorgeous smile!

by Anonymousreply 80January 3, 2016 2:34 AM

r80, yeah, dudes say that all the time. It is just a way of saying "yo, you're cool peeps; we cool bro."

by Anonymousreply 81January 3, 2016 6:20 PM

I like it when a dude calls me "big guy."

by Anonymousreply 82January 4, 2016 5:43 PM

R79, you need to leave Canada to find cool bros.

by Anonymousreply 83January 4, 2016 5:44 PM

What kind of delusion and fantasy is going on this thread? Sad. Black straight men do NOT refer to other men as baby, not unless they want to get their ass beat or outcasted. Black guys call each other "n*gga" "bro" "son" "dawg" "man" "dude" etc. They don't call each other baby you simpering nellies

by Anonymousreply 84January 4, 2016 5:55 PM

R84, I'm an actual black man in college. I hear it all the time among bruthas, even when shooting hoops.

by Anonymousreply 85January 4, 2016 6:02 PM

R85 Uh huh.....

by Anonymousreply 86January 4, 2016 6:03 PM

Some of you are so out of touch and isolated from regular males, you don't know basic stuff that normal people do. Guys have been calling other men "baby" for decades, it is especially common among African American males.

by Anonymousreply 87January 5, 2016 12:49 PM

R87 you're the one who is out of touch. Black men call their bitches and their girlfriends baby, not other fucking men!!

by Anonymousreply 88January 5, 2016 1:13 PM

by Anonymousreply 92January 5, 2016 6:23 PM

I live in DC. Of course, I hear black guys say it, but I have noticed more young white "swag" types saying it to guys too

by Anonymousreply 93January 5, 2016 6:36 PM

"shooting hoops" is gay code for whacking off to Raw Strokes, right?

by Anonymousreply 94January 5, 2016 6:44 PM

you're all delusional

by Anonymousreply 95January 5, 2016 7:28 PM

R88 read the responses on the first page of this thread, so clearly I'm not the crazy one. Maybe this is a regional thing, but it's not common like you twats are trying to suggest. Young Thug is considered by most rap fans and black folk as a cock sucking down-low fruitcake so I wouldn't use him as an example lol

Pretty common in DC and NC. Maybe it's a southern thing. Even had a white male mechanic call me "baby, but he talked "black."

by Anonymousreply 98January 5, 2016 9:21 PM

Black guys do this ALL THE TIME!

by Anonymousreply 99January 5, 2016 9:32 PM

by Anonymousreply 115April 9, 2016 4:38 PM

There is this hot black personal trainer at my gym that hit it off with me from the start. He comes around to me while working out and says stuff like, "looking great, baby." Last week, while on the elliptical, and said, "you beastin, bro," while putting his hands on my waist. I told him, "Just trying to be like you when I grow up, bro." He laughed and blushed. Black and urban guys said it to dudes in a way that is at once macho, while yet the endearing

by Anonymousreply 149September 21, 2017 12:33 PM

It really is a black, Latin, and white hip hop thing

by Anonymousreply 150September 21, 2017 1:03 PM

R148 as soon as he said I had a pavlovian response and dropped to me knees. He just looked at me.

by Anonymousreply 151September 21, 2017 4:33 PM

Hmmmm

by Anonymousreply 152September 21, 2017 5:09 PM

Ha! Just walked by food truck with a hot Latin or Arab guy working. He yelled out to me, "Come on baby, we got a chicken special for you! We'll hook you up right."

by Anonymousreply 153September 21, 2017 5:51 PM

I like it when stranger call me “baby.”

by Anonymousreply 161March 13, 2018 6:37 PM

I get called "Slim" all the time, and I'm not.

by Anonymousreply 162March 13, 2018 7:41 PM

I also occasionally get called "Captain" by black people What's up with that?

by Anonymousreply 163March 13, 2018 7:42 PM

One time a straight guy I didn't know called me "Sugar Bear" but I don't think it was a compliment.

by Anonymousreply 164March 13, 2018 7:43 PM

I was just at a bbq restaurant, and a hot Latin guy just walked up the cute frat boy cashier and said, “Wassup sexy” with a swagged out demeanor. They then gave each other full bro hugs. I was so turned on.

by Anonymousreply 165August 30, 2018 7:54 PM

Nice

by Anonymousreply 166August 30, 2018 11:57 PM

R150 "White" is no where in the equation.

That is strictly an urban black and latin thing. White men who "try" to speak like that are desperately trying to be something they're not.

As far as hip-hop goes. That too comes from urban Afro-Latin culture. Again, there's no european ethnicity in the mix at all.

The white man ain't apart of this either.

by Anonymousreply 167August 31, 2018 4:48 AM

R267, do you realize many white kids and young people grow up not just immersed in hip hop culture today, but also hanging around and socialized with Latin and black People?

by Anonymousreply 168August 31, 2018 4:51 AM

Call me by my name.......

by Anonymousreply 169August 31, 2018 5:33 AM

Not cool

by Anonymousreply 170August 31, 2018 6:01 AM

I love being called “boss” my hot guys. Gets me sprung

by Anonymousreply 171June 4, 2019 1:10 PM

In the book IN COLD BLOOD, Dick refers to Perry as “honey,” or “baby,” or “darling" throughout. I remember finding it endearing when I first read it.

by Anonymousreply 172June 4, 2019 1:46 PM

It’s huge among urban men, the brothas.

by Anonymousreply 173June 4, 2019 1:54 PM

I guess it's no different from Latin men calling each other 'papi.'

by Anonymousreply 174June 4, 2019 1:57 PM

In NOLA people call everybody "baby." It's like "Hon" is Bal'mer.

Oh no, baby, what is you doin?

[quote] I noticed that white guys are more likely to call a dude "babe”.

And it’s very hetero when they do R35!

OP, your response should always be: "And the name isn't 'baby,' it's Janet! 'Miss Jackson,' IF YO' NASTY!!"
