One of the reasons the Kennedys are still in the public eye is they let it be known that they are somehow entitled to be President of the United State. No other family that you named above has so blantantly played that card. Yes other family members of Presidents have run for office, but do the young people in their family consistently get asked when they plan to run? No.

I think it was such a leap from Mamie Eisenhower to Jackie Kennedy that it was like being delivered into the future at supersonic speed for the media.

I mean, Eleanor Roosevelt, Bess Truman, Mamie Eisenhower -- and all of a sudden here is this young, attractive woman in flattering modern designer clothing with attractive little children. It was like going from black and white Kansas to technicolor Oz. The media, being shallow and made of mostly young WWII veterans at that time, went gaga over the Jackie and along with her, the Kennedy family.

JFK was a young president and a WWII veteran. Lots of Americans identified with him -- especially the catholic ones. And the fact that he was the first Catholic president made the Kennedys curiosities. I think a lot of the media was waiting for them to make a wrong step. Make the sign of the cross at a White House dinner, invite a pack of "black crows" (nuns) to go live there and teach their kids.

When JFK was assassinated, it was good tv. People tuned in for WEEKS to see press conferences, to see the funeral procession, to find out who dunnit. Oswald was captured and then shot on live television. Ugly LBJ with his cracker voice and nasty habit of exposing his surgical scars became the president. Ugh. The media longed for Jackie and her kids and for other young Kennedys. RFK filled the breach.

We know what happened next. More round-the-clock Kennedy TV when he got shot.

It was a very serious, almost fatal crash and he was out of commission for quite a while. That's when Joan campaigned for him and, of course, he won.

The Kennedys had a dream relationship with the media (although it wasn't called that). JFK was had a great relationship with reporters and they knew very well about the women and never dreamed of reporting it.

There was radio/TV/and magazines. TV news was a 30 minute nightly new show on ABC, CBS, and NBC which carried nothing but news. No celebrity gossip, no TV cliff hangers, no movie stars. Serious news.

But the magazines loved the Kennedys: LIFE magazine and LOOK magazine. Many, many picture stories, pictures, magazine covers, etc.

People today would be amazed at the glowing images presented of the Kennedys throughout JFK's administration.

I know because I used to be a big JFK fan and collected them...still have them somewhere in scrapbooks I put together at the time.

Yes but he was supreme commander of allied forces in Europe. I don't think many American vets shared that experience, which was R45's point about JFK.
