Awful, barbaric behavior. But I suspect - despite ISIS's PR skill - these occasional reports we hear are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to killings and atrocities against gays in Iraq - both by ISIS and by other pre-ISIS militant groups. There was a guy in one of my classes at San Diego State University who was an Iraqi refugee. Openly gay. He escaped Iraq in 2006. His family was upper middle class - both parents doctors - and actually supportive of him, but he was targeted by some pre-ISIS militant group - I forget the name. Badly beaten, told they'd be back to kill him. He fled. Several of his gay friends apparently simply disappeared and were never seen again - he suspects most of them were abducted and murdered.
