No, no they're not.

Latinos are a mixture of white Spaniards and the Native Americans they conquered centuries ago. Some have black ancestry, but not many.

Latinos are not all the same.
|by Anonymous||reply 30||08/28/2020|
Oh good Lord people it depends on what part of the world the Latino is coming from. Mexicans, largely Native American with some white. Dominicans, African and some white. Puerto Rican sometimes all three. I always thought P Ricans were gorgeous.

Sean O'Pry looks just white but maybe he has some African ancestry. He claims Native American but that's very unlikely unless you're a white person from the Dakotas, Oklahoma or Texas where Native Americans remained. He doesn't seem to really embrace or partake in any cultural elements that aren't white.

I always wonder if Ryan Philippe has African ancestry in his past. His family is from Delaware and that along with Maryland and Virginia have a history of affluent light-skinned blacks who called themselves "free people of color" and if possible would pass for white if given the chance. I would not be surprised if Ryan has white-passing black ancestors.

R57 People like Sean O'Pry, George Clooney, Elvis Presley and Johnny Depp are far more likely to have black ancestry than Native because Native Americans were killed off and the remainder were forced to move out of the South in the early 1800s. On the East Coast, only NY, Massachussetts, NJ, CT, North Carolina and Florida have Native tribes around, the rest of the South eradicated them. Sean is from Georgia which is in the Black Belt.

I’m half black, half white but don’t condone this thread because I realize as a light skin and with whiter features that it’s fucked because so many white people glorify us.
Black guys don’t get the same love as these biracials like me and it’s sickening and gross. Black guys aren’t good enough and we biracials are placed above them just because of Eurocentric end white features. It’s garbage.

|by Anonymous||reply 64||09/13/2020|
It's funny also because I know so many women that love dark-skinned black men. Most black girls I know go for the darkest brothers out there. Light-skinned guys get associated with being emotional or feminine which is so stupid but I still see people say that.

|by Anonymous||reply 69||09/13/2020|
R65 yeah most black and Latin women and gay men i know love dark skinned black men, like seek them out. I think the kardashians effect has a lot to do with it. A lot of popular black celebrities like Chadwick are dark skinned too, light skinned men were more in during the 90s and 2000s

I think it was really Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill, Tupac, Larenz Tate, Tyrese and Big Daddy Kane that made dark skin desirable again. In the 1980s and early 90s, it seemed lighter to brown skinned men with "good hair" were much preferred like Prince, Michael Jackson, El Debarge, Al B Sure!, Christoper Williams, Denzel Washington and Billy Dee Williams.

And most Hispanics aren’t white. Most are mestizo. But ignorant and uneducated don’t know about that and just label them white or black.

I'm confused? Why does anyone even care about their ancestry?
Here in The UK if you were born here you are just British, you'd be avoided by everyone if you kept banging on about your 4x Grandfather who came from Uganda/Ireland/Scotland or Germany. Weird.
This race/ethnicity stuff isn't normal. I've never come across it it any of the other 40+ Countries that I've visited.
|by Anonymous||reply 88||09/13/2020|
R88 Mariah Carey said the USA is the only place that is race obsessed. It is also the only place where she is considered “black”, and that many other places have “Mixed” or biracial as an option on census. The USA doesn’t.
|by Anonymous||reply 89||09/13/2020|
It seems like it's more of a deal in places that don't really have their own unique cultural identity. What does American or Canadian really mean? Absolutely nothing. It's a mishmash of everything else. In places like that people long for something to identify with and end up becoming obsessed with ancestry.
|by Anonymous||reply 90||09/13/2020|
R89 I doubt that the Black/White/Mixed or Biracial question will even appear on next year's UK Census. If we have one? They think that they can replicate the information gathered through social security and credit records.
We have had previous Census gaps without any problems.

Hispanic is an ethnicity and anyone can be Hispanic if born in a Latin American country and speak Spanish. Latin American countries originated as colonies founded by people from Europe just like North America was.
But at the end of the day all of are descended from Africa where the very first humans originated.

Race as a concept is very tied to colonial societies like North and South America, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

I'm Black American and I really couldn't have cared less about Meghan Markle marrying into the Royal Family because it has nothing at all to do with me or other Black Americans. However, I was shocked at the reaction it got, some English people really were saying racist and ignorant things about her which got my sympathy even though I still feel she knew what she was getting into.

R114 I agree. I find the British reaction towards her to be pretty disgusting.
|by Anonymous||reply 115||09/13/2020|
R114 R115 Where was this stuff being said?
I read UK newspapers and website's pretty thoughly ever day.
Nobody would have ever known that she identified as black,. Her own CV says that she can play Southern European, not black.
She also only ever dated lily white guys.
If you want to claim her it's fine by me.
|by Anonymous||reply 116||09/13/2020|
Most people didn’t know she was even black
|by Anonymous||reply 117||09/13/2020|
Megan doesn't identify as black but mixed instead. But it's pretty common knowledge she is biracial just like it is for Paula Patton and Mariah Carey. I'm Black and I really don't care what white-passing people identify as, hell even mixed people who don't pass could identify as "mixed" and I wouldn't care. But it doesn't change the fact there are really racist people out there who are obsessed with "racial purity" and apply the hyperdscent nonsense on others.

George Clooney is Irish, he's far more likely descended from Spaniards who settled in Ireland, you know, The Black Irish.
As for Johnny Depp, "Depp is primarily of English descent, with some French, German, and Irish ancestry. He is descended from a French Huguenot immigrant (Pierre Dieppe, who settled in Virginia around 1700) and from colonial freedom fighter Elizabeth Key Grinstead (1630–1665), daughter of an English planter and his African slave."

|by Anonymous||reply 122||09/13/2020|
R121 I agree but many people from that region, Kentucky, will claim Native American due to ignorance of their own heritage because their ancestors have been there so long, like since the 1600s/1700s. Johnny claimed NA for years until he embarrassed publicly when his genealogy came out and that he was in fact had some distant African ancestry.
|by Anonymous||reply 123||09/13/2020|
Lots of Irish men have dark features like George Clooney. The men of Irish descent I know who resemble George are not from Kentucky, they are native New Yorkers. Their descendants came directly from Ireland.
Many people do not have the physical features which are attributed to whatever their race and nationality are. Not all Irish people have light eyes and red or light hair, same for Germans and Swedes. Lots of German and Swedes have dark hair and brown eyes. I've noticed a lot of Black and white people look Hispanic and many mixed Black/white people, for some odd reason, have Asian eyes.
One of my grandfathers was a blond blue-eyed Sicilian, there was nothing in his background which pointed to him being anything other than a Sicilian. No German or Nordic ancestry. There are also lots of naturally red haired Italians, I have two in my family. One has bright red hair, the other has auburn hair. My other grandfather was Sicilian and North African, yet he looked 100% South Asian, he looked Indian, he had thick wavy black hair, slightly Asian shaped eyes and basic SA features.
Genes are weird, period.

|by Anonymous||reply 128||09/13/2020|
[quote] Johnny claimed NA for years until he embarrassed publicly when his genealogy came out and that he was in fact had some distant African ancestry.
But as you say, Depp only claimed NA heritage because that is what he was told his entire life. Many mixed race people living in America during the time of slavery and Jim Crow passed as whatever their appearance would allow. It was not political, African ancestry was the difference between freedom and bondage.

[quote]And yes, like it or not, someone who looks like Zendaya or Mason Gooding is treated very differently in life than someone who looks like Lupita or Djimon
Did light-skinned black people have their own Special section in the bus and their own water fountains? How are they treated differently by mainstream society? The only place where colorism matters is within black America itself, the rest of the country doesn’t differentiate.
|by Anonymous||reply 130||09/13/2020|
R130 that was then. In today’s world they aren’t treated the same. We aren’t in 1950 anymore. Move on.

|by Anonymous||reply 131||09/13/2020|
Again r131, how are they treated differently? Have the far right said they’re invited to the hoe down? Are they less likely to be followed around stores? How?
|by Anonymous||reply 132||09/13/2020|
R129 White-passing was a lot more common than we presumed. I think in states like South Carolina, Louisiana and Alabama, a certain percentage of the white population has some African blood. And a lot of black people in Louisiana especially Creoles could be mistaken for white in some other states. I think also the black/white mixture can create a mid-range appearance that can look Native American-ish to some which helps with passing, if you can't pass for white then you could pass for Native. People like Johnny Depp just repeat what they are told by family members. I didn't get the hate for Elizabeth Warren either since she is from Oklahoma, a state that has a lot of white-passing Natives running around. Warren was just repeating common family folklore. Also, the Lumbee tribe in North Carolina is actually a isolated ethnic group descended from white and black farmers who intermixed but claimed Native American to avoid discrimination.
|by Anonymous||reply 133||09/13/2020|
I've posted this on here before. My Mother's side of the family is black, but they basically look white with a little bit of seasoning. My Mom always gets asked the "what are you question". People seem to think that she's either Mediterranean or Middle Eastern, but never black. It happens to me outside of the south, quite a bit, for some reason even though I think I present as black (I'm probably a shade lighter than Obama). My Mom says it's probably because of my hair. I get are you Hispanic a lot. A few times I've gotten Egyptian.
Anyway, after that digression, my Grandmother's sister moved to NYC in the 50s and passed. She lived life as a white woman. No one was the wiser and there would be no reason for anyone to suspect. Apparently, her NYC family had no clue about her until she and her husband returned for my Great Grandmother's funeral years later. I can only imagine what that conversation was like, but clearly he didn't care.
Later on my Mom, Dad, and I did 23 & Me, My Mom is like 10% African. My Dad is like 60% African. But for some weird reason I'm only 30%. And yes, he's my biological father.
Any way, I apologize for the long post, but I have first hand experience with a family member passing... And strange genetics.
|by Anonymous||reply 134||09/13/2020|
r134, Thanks for that post. It was very enlightening. (No pun intended). I certainly think that people of mixed race are likely to be healthier. The human race is actually descended from a tiny, rather inbred group (180,000 years ago or so), so we are all pretty vulnerable to unknown diseases (as the current pandemic is showing us). But even separations of 25,000 or 40,000 years (as current Africans were separated from all those who migrated out of Africa in the past hundred thousand years or so and in waves since), means that biological traits and immunities might have developed in one population and not the other, so that mixing them confers better immunity upon progeny and possibly better assortments of microflora. Sadly, history has also shown us that when one separated group meets up with another, diseases which one group has developed partial resistance to can completely devastate the other. Much more than half of indigenous populations in the western hemisphere died off of diseases like small pox, flu, typhus and measles which were introduced by Europeans to the continents.
