She was a wonderful vocalist. I loved her voice. Big n boomy. I love just about everything she did. "Self Control" is my fave track. William Friedken

oops. I'm OP> William Friedken directed the video to "Self Control" from 1984.

by Anonymousreply 1September 30, 2015 2:57 PM

I'm partial to her song "Solitaire" from 1983.

Self Control is my favorite. The night is my world.

by Anonymousreply 3September 30, 2015 3:35 PM

She did a duet with Umberto Tozzi on an Italian TV show. They did two original Tozzi songs,Gloria and Ti Amo. Laura did a nice job on Ti Amo

by Anonymousreply 4September 30, 2015 3:39 PM

Her best track was "It's a Headache," followed by "Spanish Fly"

by Anonymousreply 5September 30, 2015 3:57 PM

Her and Pat Benatar, I get them mixed up

Friedkin really liked Branigan and shortly after he did the video for Self Control, announced he was going to direct a film version of the novel "Sea Trial" to star her and Michael Nouri, but it never wound up happening.

by Anonymousreply 8September 30, 2015 6:35 PM

I heard she put out for Ahmed Ertegun. That is how she got a contract with Atlantic Records.

by Anonymousreply 9September 30, 2015 7:03 PM

never mind her vocal talents, huh, r9.

Moonlight On Water from 1990

She worked with SAW in the late 80's. Shattered Glass is a good song.

One of the most amazing voices but, overall, such underwhelming material. There's some great stuff on her albums--Never in a Million Years, How Can I Help You, almost the entire Touch album--but it felt like no one was getting her the top material. She deserved better. Fave track? Moonlight on Water.

by Anonymousreply 13September 30, 2015 11:08 PM

She did a version of "Cry Wolf" that Stevie Nicks did a couple of years later. Very under-stated and beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 14October 1, 2015 1:28 PM

I always thought her version of How Am I Supposed To Live Without You was beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 15October 1, 2015 1:34 PM

I miss her

by Anonymousreply 16October 1, 2015 6:48 PM

i do too.

by Anonymousreply 17October 1, 2015 6:58 PM

i saw her in concert one time in australia. she was really good live. she was supporting her touch album.

Her version of Der Komissar is as good as the original. Her English version is called "Deep In The Dark" from Branigan 2.

by Anonymousreply 20October 2, 2015 12:08 PM

At her most eighties, the theme song to the Aaron Spelling miniseries, Hollywood Wives.

My favorite Laura Branigan songs = Power Of Love, Moonlight On Water, Deep In The Dark, I Found Someone, Name Game, Solitaire, Gloria, Squeeze Box, Shattered Glass, Don't Show Your Love, Self Control, Never In A Million Years, How Am I Supposed To Live Without You? & The Sweet Hello, the Sad Goodbye (perhaps her most underrated song which was better than Roxette's version).

by Anonymousreply 23October 10, 2015 4:19 PM

Agree with r23 about her version of "The Sweet Hello, the Sad Goodbye". Better than Roxette's version and one of my favorites.

She was the very first concert I saw (when Branigan 2 was coming out).

This is not my favorite - truthfully I love the majority very much - but thought it would be appreciated.

Jesus, bitches, it's Gloria, hands down. Best anthem of the 80s and her most memorable hit. Can't believe it didn't get a mention except lost in R23's laundry list.

by Anonymousreply 27October 10, 2015 5:53 PM

Gloria is great but Solitaire is even better.

I like her song "smell my pussy".

by Anonymousreply 30October 10, 2015 10:56 PM

She was also one of my first concerts.

I love many of her songs, but I probably listen to "Solitaire" the most. I would love to hear Kelly Clarkson cover it.

by Anonymousreply 31October 10, 2015 10:58 PM

Gloria is cheese. Fun cheese but still cheese. Self Control transcends its time/production.

It always pissed me off that Bolton, Cher, Celine Dion, all had bigger hits with songs she had done first--and better.

I know MB wrote " How am I Supposed..." and Laura DID take it to #13, but his version was so gross.

I also know Jennifer Rush did "Power of Love" first. Both of their versions were superior to Celine's #1 version.

Cher had a hit with "I Found Someone"..Laura's version was not a hit--weirdly, since I remember hearing it on the radio all the time.

by Anonymousreply 37October 11, 2015 1:25 PM

Laura chose good songs even though she did not write most of her material. Good A&R in those days at Atlantic Records. They really liked Laura over there.

by Anonymousreply 38October 11, 2015 1:35 PM

Self Control is mine as well.

by Anonymousreply 39October 11, 2015 2:46 PM

Her version of songs that were hits or bigger hits for other artists are better. examples include: I Found Someone, The Power of Love, Forever Young, How Am I Supposed to Live Without You.

by Anonymousreply 40October 11, 2015 4:28 PM

Love all her songs but "The Lucky One" is prime to belt out in the shower.

by Anonymousreply 41October 11, 2015 5:38 PM

R30 Not familiar with that one.
