Ritalin for weight loss

I managed to get a prescription for Ritalin. Has anyone on DL ever used it? How fast does it start working?

by Anonymousreply 48September 23, 2020 4:32 AM

Chemically, it's the closest thing to cocaine. I used it a couple of times (diagnosed with ADHD). Hated it. Adderall is better, or at least slow release Ritalin (Vyvanse). With Ritalin, there's a crash and mood swing at the end, as with coke. So I'm told.

by Anonymousreply 1September 27, 2015 5:25 PM

What year is this, 1991? Get a prescription for Topamax if you want to lose real weight.

by Anonymousreply 2September 27, 2015 5:27 PM

...and it will suppress your appetite right away - and your thirst. You'll need to make yourself drink water or else you'll get dehydrated. I think using it for weight loss isn't smart.

by Anonymousreply 3September 27, 2015 5:27 PM

People have gained weight on Ritalin. Hate to have to be the one to break that to ya, OP.

by Anonymousreply 4September 27, 2015 5:28 PM

I don't think any of them work long term. Adderall actually makes me feel hungry now, which is really irritating. Makes me feel like I have low blood sugar. Topamax is not nicknamed "dopamax" for nothing--I lasted a few days on that before I said "no more."

by Anonymousreply 5September 27, 2015 5:30 PM

People who starve themselves thin on drugs always end up chunkier than ever once they break down and start eating again.

by Anonymousreply 6September 27, 2015 5:31 PM

OP, perhaps you should start, ya know, eating healthy, start exercising, and stop being lazy.

by Anonymousreply 7September 27, 2015 5:32 PM

Topamax made you tired R5?

How is a seizure med supposed to work for weight loss... just curious - most of them make you gain weight (depakote, lamictal)

by Anonymousreply 8September 27, 2015 5:33 PM

Just lift really heavy weights the safe way OP. You'll shed pounds fast, get cut and can eat whatever you want. No messing with your brain chemistry.

Food deprivation makes you mushy, weak and tired. Not sexy.

by Anonymousreply 9September 27, 2015 5:35 PM

P.S. OP--to answer your question, if it's going to work for you, it should work right away to diminish your appetite. You will get the strongest effects at first, and they'll gradually diminish. Even if it doesn't do much for your appetite, it may be tempting to keep taking it for the energy it gives you.

Topamax has also been used in combo w phentermine for that weight loss drug called "Qsymia." No idea why it works for some people.

by Anonymousreply 10September 27, 2015 5:37 PM

R8, it gave me "brain fog" and made me forgetful.

by Anonymousreply 11September 27, 2015 5:40 PM

OP did your physician actually prescribe it for the purpose of weight loss, or did you have to fake ADD? If the physician actually prescribed it for weight loss, then there are probably other better things to try first (eg, phentermine or Belviq).

by Anonymousreply 12September 27, 2015 5:43 PM

Oh that makes sense R11....the seizure drugs tend to do that in general. That's what confused me about the weight loss "side effect". The main side effect of them is zombie thinking. Lamictal turned me into an Alzheimers patient and i was only on 25 mg (I think the normal dose is 100?).

by Anonymousreply 13September 27, 2015 5:43 PM

Lamictal is weight-neutral.

I ended up gaining weight on those ADD drugs so the doctors would keep prescribing them. If you lose weight, they might stop the pill train.

by Anonymousreply 15September 27, 2015 5:45 PM

[quote]People who starve themselves thin on drugs always end up chunkier than ever once they break down and start eating again.

Actually, no

by Anonymousreply 16September 27, 2015 5:46 PM

OP, what the fuck is wrong with you that you have access to all these drugs? You bipolar or some shit with ADHD, OCD, and a bunch of other shit thrown in?

by Anonymousreply 17September 27, 2015 5:47 PM

OP better also watch that his liver doesn't give out.

by Anonymousreply 18September 27, 2015 5:48 PM

Just eat, you'll be happier.

by Anonymousreply 19September 27, 2015 5:52 PM

I lost 16 pounds on Ritalin and kept it off. It worked really well for me, but it does make you crash pretty hard if you take too much of it.

by Anonymousreply 20September 27, 2015 6:08 PM

R20 how long did it take?

I gained so much weight in the last 6 mos due to (multiple) surgeries... fucked up my whole life aside from just my weight - but the weight would be nice to get off. Based on my scale, I only gained 12 lbs... BUT the body fat measurements are much more telling... I gained 17 lbs of fat and lost muscle. It's disgusting.

by Anonymousreply 21September 27, 2015 6:09 PM

R9 is a fucking simpleton. Lifting heavy weights has nothing to do with losing weight, you moron. Stick to your day job, if you're able to hold one down.

by Anonymousreply 22September 27, 2015 6:25 PM

OP if you got slow release, it won't lead to much weight loss.

If by chance you got because you legitimately might have adult ADD (the brain of one) then it won't lead to weight loss.

It's only speed for a few weeks and it's only really effective as speed for people who don't have ADD.

by Anonymousreply 23September 27, 2015 7:27 PM

Lifting heavy weights does indeed melt weight off. I would know.

by Anonymousreply 24September 27, 2015 7:29 PM

It took about two months. It was really effective for me: it killed my appetite as soon as I started taking it, but I still made sure to eat something every day (and hydrate) because starving yourself will just make you worse off when you stop taking it. The problem with any weight loss drug is that there's a good chance you'll gain the weight back once you stop taking it. I've been able to keep off the weight without it for the last few months because I knew that I had been overeating before, and I started being really careful about not picking up that habit again. I'm getting a new prescription next month and I'm going to try to lose another five pounds. I think it will be pretty easy; it's keeping it off afterwards that's the hard part.

by Anonymousreply 25September 27, 2015 7:33 PM

Thanks. Wow 16 lbs in 2 months is pretty good. You must have been down to 1500 calories per day or something.

The problem with me & drugs like ritalin is that they make me sweaty & have to pee..and jittery... it's not good. I am really curious about this topamax thing now. I never heard of that before.

by Anonymousreply 26September 27, 2015 10:55 PM

I don't have add. I sucked my doctors cock in the past so he wrote me a prescription because I asked.

by Anonymousreply 27September 28, 2015 5:58 AM

I lived on Ritalin and Seconal....until I didn't....

by Anonymousreply 28September 28, 2015 6:11 AM

And OP, I timed it. Ritalin is intense. It began working within eight minutes for me (no appetite, a rush).

by Anonymousreply 29September 28, 2015 6:14 AM

OP, You'll just be trading an addiction (overeating) for another possible addiction (Ritalin). Don't do it. Find another way.

by Anonymousreply 30September 28, 2015 8:16 AM

I take 100 mg of Ritalin a day (60 in the morning and 40 in the afternoon) and I don't get any kind of rush. It's amazingly helpful for my ADD symptoms, though and I am very thankful for it. It does kill my appetite however, though it comes back with a vengeance at night once the Ritalin has worn off.

by Anonymousreply 31September 28, 2015 8:38 AM

I inadvertantly lost weight while taking Adderall XR, my life was so much easier, I could focus on being a full time student with a 3.7 gpa while working 40 hours a week (my days went from 4am-11pm), but people told me I was getting too thin, and I was. I stopped taking it even though I need it, I wish there was something that worked the same way without suppressing the appetite.

by Anonymousreply 32September 28, 2015 9:01 AM

So many pathetic speed addicts on this site.

by Anonymousreply 33September 28, 2015 11:36 AM

I am on Provigil. I take it for my depression. I'm on Jenny Craig for my weight loss. Working great so far!

by Anonymousreply 34September 28, 2015 12:28 PM

For anybody who's curious about Topomax, I had a friend who was prescribed it due to severe migraines. She lost weight (which she didn't need to lose in the first place) and was always complaining about the brain fog. I can't imagine using it for weight loss alone.

by Anonymousreply 35September 28, 2015 12:44 PM

R23 You can lose weight by lifting weights. It revs up your metabolism and in conjunction with a proper diet, your body fat will be lower On the other hand, aerobic exercise doesn't build lean muscle in the same way

by Anonymousreply 36September 28, 2015 1:11 PM

Yeah but that's too much like work, r36. Anyway the quickest way to lose weight is to change your diet.

by Anonymousreply 37September 28, 2015 1:14 PM

No the quickest way to lose weight is to lift heavy weights.

by Anonymousreply 38September 28, 2015 2:27 PM

I've been eating rally healthy and small portions but I'm having bad hunger pains. I plan to eat as I was before but hopefully until the hunger pains stop the Ritalin will help.

by Anonymousreply 39September 28, 2015 2:59 PM

Will it help to get six pack abs?

by Anonymousreply 40September 28, 2015 3:12 PM

Judy Garland consumed enormous amounts of Ritalin in her final years.

by Anonymousreply 41September 28, 2015 4:05 PM

Not sure if anyone still has this thread watched...but if you do - How long does it take before Topamax reduces your appetite? Is it supposed to be right away at 25 mg?

by Anonymousreply 42September 30, 2015 9:31 AM

I was prescribed Ritalin for Adult ADHD. I HATED it. Even on therapeutic doses, the crash around 6pm was awful (feeling drained, depressed, anxious...). The funny thing is I love cocaine as much as I hated Ritalin. Cocaine for me just does not have a crash (probably because it also inhibit serotonin reuptake which makes it all smooth-sailing). Ritalin does not inhibit serotonin reuptake and the crash was so ugly that I sometimes needed to grab some benzos. Ugh!

And the ignominy is that I put on weight while on it, since I would start to crave food around 9pm. And eating big portions of food just before going to bed is a big no-no.

I have lost 15 pounds since I quit taking it. Hideous drug. Gimme coke any day of the week.

Everyone's different. YMMV.

by Anonymousreply 43September 30, 2015 9:47 AM

I am on day 4 of Topamax and finally seeing a change. It's 6 PM and I had 1 serving of granola (180 cals) and 2 kiwis (150 cal) 1 apple and 1 orange (200 cals).

I forced myself to eat the fruit. So, I'm in the 500-600 cal range for 1/2 the day...which is miraculous. I wonder if this is placebo... but the last 3 days I had very minimal changes... and I was binging on cereal at night (my Achilles heal)

by Anonymousreply 44October 1, 2015 11:13 PM

I think I have undiagnosed ADHD in addition to my undiagnosed aspergers. Maybe I need this.

by Anonymousreply 45September 23, 2020 3:55 AM

I wish I could be locked in a high end clinic with my jewels, my caftans and my crossword puzzles, given sauna treatments and 4 ounces of food per meal until the pounds just VANISHED off of me.

lifting weights sounds DREADFUL. The heaviest thing I want to lift is my black AMEX card.
