The New Flat Earth Debate. Wacko Conspiracy Theory or Greatest Deception in Human History?

Up until yesterday I would have quickly dismissed the Flat Earthers as tin-hats extraordinaire. But then out of sheer boredom I watched a short youtube video about this debate which started growing exponentially in the early months pf 2015. Now I have some serious questions about the Globalist view of our world, and the unproven theory think leads to all the world believe we live on a spinning ball in space.

There are many tangential theories about our world being under a dome, or the world existing on an endless plain, but the basic core argument is that there is just as much scientific evidence to support the flat earth as there is a ball.

Why does the North Star Polaris never waiver from Earth's constantly spinning orbits and seasonal waivers?

Why is it impossible to book a actual existing flight from Australia to South America or South Africa without a stopover somewhere that seems way off course...like London, Dakar or Dubai? Why do planes vanish from tracking sites in the southern hemisphere?

What the hell is going on in Antarctica, just weather research by 46 different nations all at the same time?

I know most will just have the typical involuntary refusal to consider it, just like I did, but if anyone has done any research here on DL what do you think?

Given that a number of ships have successfully circumnavigated the planet before any of us were born, how did they not fall off of the edge?

by Anonymousreply 1September 8, 2015 8:43 PM

Circumnavigation was one of the more easily explained reasons.

by Anonymousreply 2September 8, 2015 8:49 PM

Oh my God. How idiotic. I really hope you're taking the piss, OP.

Any middle school science teacher could debunk the completely inane claims of this video.

"If the Earth is spinning so fast, why doesn't my hair get messed up?"

I had questions like that, yes. When I was 5. Then I went to this thing called school and learned about this thing called basic physics.

Might want to study up on that, OP. Or just take some meds and go to bed.

by Anonymousreply 3September 8, 2015 8:49 PM

Why the hell is John Travolta promoting a Qantas flight that is impossible to book online? Why make such a huge deal over this "nonstop flight from Sydney to Santiago? Try to book it yourself, I bet you can't. Always gets diverted through Auckland , or Singapore, never goes nonstop as scheduled. I worked in travel and this is one of several notorious phantom flights in the southern hemisphere that no agent has EVER successfully booked or had the flight not stopover at least once.

The flat earth map certainly makes sense as to why this flight is never available...

by Anonymousreply 4September 8, 2015 9:00 PM

I just went to Qantas's website. There are a ton of direct flights available from Australia to Chile.

Take your meds, you crazy tinhat fuck.

by Anonymousreply 5September 8, 2015 9:15 PM

I have circumnavigated the planet myself!

by Anonymousreply 6September 8, 2015 9:20 PM

OP, you are right. The earth is really flat, and it has been nothing but one huge conspiracy theory to make us all think we live on a bright blue marble floating through space.

But there is a remedy! And it is very, very easy to both understand and accomplish:

1) go to the store. 2) buy a bottle of bleach, at least 1 gallon (that's about 4 litres in case you're google-impaired). 3) drink up!

Ta-Da!

by Anonymousreply 7September 8, 2015 9:20 PM

Thats some mighty fine debunking, R7, R5 , they actually pay you to patrol the internet and insulting people with legitimate questions?

Like I stated, I have not found anyone who can actually prove that the Earth is a globe, and just by my own research online, people who are asking the questions are always called crazy or stupid. I just want an actual reasonable scientifically based answer from anyone on either side. The fact that the first few answers are so visceral and angry goes to show just how sensitive this question has become.

There are many more , much longer, much better presented sources online about the flat earth debate, but it's up to you to watch , listen and try to overcome your own preconceived notions.

Since I work in travel, I have personal experience with the horrible flights you have to take , those "direct flights " are NEVER available, so if anyone on here as actually personally flown direct , please let us now, that would be proof without name calling.

by Anonymousreply 8September 8, 2015 9:38 PM

I have dircumnavigated the globe myself, always traveling west. What's more, I have a very strong sense of direction, so if they were gradually moving west in order to fool me I think I could have been able to tell.

by Anonymousreply 9September 8, 2015 9:54 PM

Jesus fucking christ. The stupidity of people never ceases to amaze me.

Even the ancient Greeks realized the Earth was round. Which actually annoys me is when people try to pretend it is something we didn't know until the era of Columbus.

Anyway, OP is no doubt trolling, so really this entire thing should just be placed on ignore.

by Anonymousreply 10September 8, 2015 10:00 PM

I took a nonstop from Sydney to Johannesburg. And it was a daytime flight, so I witnessed sun effects consistent with my globe. Who says it can't be done?

by Anonymousreply 11September 8, 2015 10:07 PM

Nonsensical video. Doesn't include the momentum of the earth. Says things which clearly are not true (in fact planes flying east and west DO NOT take the same time).

by Anonymousreply 12September 8, 2015 10:14 PM

A Delta flight from Los Angeles to Tokyo takes 12 hours Since there is a 16 hour time change, you get in 4 hours later than you left.

A Delta flight from Tokyo to Los Angeles takes 10 hours. Since there is a 16 hour time change, you get in 6 hours before you left.

by Anonymousreply 13September 8, 2015 10:30 PM

OP

That's hysterical.

I've always wondered when I was in the car going 70 mph why my hair didn't flop around.

Let me guess - OP still thinks that socialism has never been allowed to work because of evil capitalists.

by Anonymousreply 14September 8, 2015 11:28 PM

Explain this, OP:

Every square inch of the Earth has been flown over by airplanes and sattelites, and photographed and filmed. AND NOBODY'S EVER SEEN THE EDGE. WHERE ARE THE EDGES, OP?

by Anonymousreply 15September 9, 2015 12:15 AM

Satellite photos, OP.

[quote]Why does the North Star Polaris never waiver from Earth's constantly spinning orbits and seasonal waivers? oh my fucking god

by Anonymousreply 17September 9, 2015 1:18 AM

Maybe instead of falling off the edge, you just bump into a wall, like in The Truman Show?

by Anonymousreply 18September 9, 2015 1:27 AM

[quote]Up until yesterday I would have quickly dismissed the Flat Earthers as tin-hats extraordinaire. But then

And that was the point I stopped reading. Your sheer stupidity has overwhelmed me, OP.

by Anonymousreply 19September 9, 2015 1:30 AM

Antarctica is the edge, a giant wall of ice that surrounds the entire edge of the known world. The UN Flag has the world view that is actually a view of the alleged flat Earth.

Good to see you are all doing your own research and taking the time to calmly and rationally discuss the possibility of something that obviously scares most of you. Why do people turn into hysterical intolerant brutes, defending the Global view like a religious zealot when the topic of a different theory of the world of even brought? That is the real question I was seeking an answer for on here, and you open-opened tolerant, cosmopolitan citizens of Datalounge have answered the question completely,.

Of course the Earth is a globe that orbits around the sun, everyone knows that., science can prove it against every other theory or opposing viewpoint without any room for question or doubt, you all know that for a fact.

But HOW do you know? Even Einstein conceded that everything in the universe is merely a theory, even gravity and time itself.

Just ask yourself this, how do you really know?

4th grade. Earlier, perhaps.

by Anonymousreply 22September 9, 2015 1:37 AM

OP, let's just say you're on to something. The naysayers here are too blinded by their cradle-to-the grave indoctrination to see past the tips of there noses - pity. I will tell you this: your questions will be answered in this lifetime; keep thinking out of the box.

Reams of scientific data and literally millions of photographs, not to mention the impossibility of this being "the greatest deception in human history," foisted upon an unsuspecting public by tens of thousands of explorers and scientists over a 500-year period.

You really are quite stupid to post this nonsense.

by Anonymousreply 24September 9, 2015 1:51 AM

R23

Anarchists (like me) love to question "received wisdom" but the OP is a troll.

No intelligent human believes the earth is flat.

by Anonymousreply 25September 9, 2015 1:53 AM

You're e en stupider to blindly accept this reality that's been foisted upon you.

by Anonymousreply 26September 9, 2015 1:55 AM

well whoever made that video at r20 really believes it... what a weird movie. I only got 7 minutes in...and his "evidence" was that Hollywood hasn't made enough moon landing movies. ok.

by Anonymousreply 27September 9, 2015 1:56 AM

Ok so there is a crust of ice all around the edges of the flat Earth. How does the ice that is near the equator stay frozen???? Does it melt and that's where all of those missing airplanes and things went, in a river of melting ice flowing to NOWHREe Or maybe to HeLL???? Pleeze answer ASAP I'm freaKING OUT HERE!!!!!!!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 35September 9, 2015 3:10 AM

At some point you have to trust people who have dedicated their lives into the study of these things. That excludes you, OP. Plus all evidence supporting a round world. Oh, shit, I got sucked into taking this seriously...

by Anonymousreply 36September 9, 2015 3:13 AM

R25. That Sherri Shepherd disputes this has made me rethink everything I was taught previously. The world very well may be flat.

by Anonymousreply 37September 9, 2015 3:16 AM

Since most of us have the attention spans of gnats , I'm not surprised no one has even bothered to watch the linked video, except for whoever made it to 7 minutes. It really is worth the time 1:45 minutes long, the guy who narrates has quite the interesting , almost soothing , voice and great way os speaking. The video images are mostly stock images with some maps, graphs or screen captures, so the first time I just listened to the audio. Play it while you fold your laundry or take a bath or watch porn, but just listen. It starts off rather slowly (yes the Hollywood movies analogy is rather lame ) with a series of Clues, each one building on the logic of what by the end, is something that does way beyond just a flat Earth. I am not sure I believe it all or even part, but it is a hell of a radio program to listen to, something to make you actually use that brain for some independent thought,

by Anonymousreply 38September 9, 2015 3:40 AM

Oh, now I get it. The OP is making some kind of financial profit based on the number of people who watch this monumental piece of garbage.

No, OP, just NO. Get a real job, moron.

by Anonymousreply 39September 9, 2015 3:43 AM

He should've started with a stronger argument than the hollywood one. As someone w/ some vids on youtube, you can see exactly when people bail on your video. Even 2 minute videos don't hold 1/2 the audience if they're boring.

I was turned off by the initial argument. ..and I've watched plenty of long crazy inside job 9/11 videos...so that says something.

by Anonymousreply 40September 9, 2015 3:44 AM

Damn, ya got me, youtube is paying total morons to shill for videos with a 2500 person viewcount.

You cost me money, I was well on my way to making a cool nickle.

People you all the name callers ad jerks do not deserve to know, perhaps , so if the topic makes you that angry, do not even bother to watch.

Damn, you be all kinds of fucked up.

Is this some MKUltra shit? You know these people are too stupid to use as CIA agents!

by Anonymousreply 42September 9, 2015 3:55 AM

R38, you should read your own post. You believe the narrators argument because he has a nice voice and good presentation skills? That is no reason to believe any arguement, though I bet the German High Command wish they used that arguement at Nuremberg:

Herman Goering: but Hitler had such a nice voice, he seemed like such a nice guy.

Russian Judge: oh, well, if he had a nice voice, that certainly explains something. Why didn't you say so?! Alright, I have to move for a "not guilty" across the board for everybody, due to the pleasant voice and general niceness of Der Furher!

by Anonymousreply 43September 9, 2015 4:01 AM

In contrast, should we dismiss the testimony of anyone who actually wrote 'arguement' twice??

by Anonymousreply 44September 9, 2015 4:04 AM

We know the earth is round because the moon as we see it in the northern hemisphere appears "upside down" in the southern hemisphere. That is because the moon revolves around the earth near the equator. We who live north of the equator face south to see the moon. Those south of the equator face north to see the moon. The "upside down moon" they see in Australia even makes a different "man in the moon face" from the one we see. Also, the waxing moon as seen in our hemisphere appears curved like the letter D, then after the full moon phase, it waxes into a crescent like the letter C. South of the equator they see the reverse - a waxing C-shaped moon that wanes into a D-shaped curve. The closer one goes to the equator the more the moon will appear to traverse the sky directly overhead. The further one travels from the equator, north or south, the lower the moon will appear in the sky.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 45September 9, 2015 4:25 AM

Oops, I meant that the northern moon wanes into a letter C.

by Anonymousreply 46September 9, 2015 4:26 AM

Well, I'm glad that's settled.

by Anonymousreply 47September 9, 2015 4:27 AM

If the Earth is flat, why are there time zones?

Why does the sun set three hours earlier in New York than in Seattle?

Because anyone who's ever worn a wristwatch on a long flight or called someone long-distance can confirm that it really does.

by Anonymousreply 48September 9, 2015 5:59 AM

If the Earth is flat, then why is the ocean round?

Because there are few places on land where the ground is flat an empty enough for a human to see how close the horizon really is, but it's obvious at sea. If you pay attention, you can see large ships or small islands going below the horizon only a few miles away.

by Anonymousreply 49September 9, 2015 6:09 AM

Does water bend to follow the curvature of the Earth ( which is 8 inches per mile btw) If water follows the curve then no canals would be able to work, water always finds it's own level.

Water cannot curve or bend while perfectly still in a canal or lake.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 50September 9, 2015 8:36 AM

Simply show that the distance/fuel consumption between two points in the Northern Hemisphere is roughly the same as between two points in the Southern Hemisphere.

For example, the distance between Rio de Janeiro and Cape Town is 3775 miles, and the distance from New York to London is 3470 miles. If the disc theory was correct, it would be something like 4x as far between the Southern Hemisphere cities, since you'd have to traverse the two points further from the center of the disc (ie the North Pole).

[quote]Does water bend to follow the curvature of the Earth ( which is 8 inches per mile btw) If water follows the curve then no canals would be able to work, water always finds it's own level.

Water, like everything else, is attracted by gravity. It only "finds its own level" because of gravity. This is true of any non-viscous liquid, not just water.

I'm not quite sure which side you're arguing for, but you're not helping.

by Anonymousreply 53September 10, 2015 1:13 AM

R53

I laughed, so I think he is helping.

The bizarre funny shit on this thread is better than the crazy refugee conspiracy theories.

by Anonymousreply 54September 10, 2015 1:32 AM

Sun and moon gravity causes water to bulge. Also, the strength of gravity varies to some extent around the Earth, which will affect the bulge of water. I think the spinning of the Earth also acts upon water just like it would on a spinning plate. One should not expect large bodies of water to lie flat like a small lake might.

by Anonymousreply 55September 10, 2015 1:42 AM

[quote]I think the spinning of the Earth also acts upon water just like it would on a spinning plate. One should not expect large bodies of water to lie flat like a small lake might.

It's nice that you just make up science to fit your theories.

by Anonymousreply 59September 10, 2015 2:37 PM

R56, it's a fact, actually. I don't have the technical background to explain it properly, but it's a fact. Are you the flat-Earth troll, or just a random asshole?

by Anonymousreply 60September 10, 2015 2:43 PM

The sheer amount of nastiness and name calling is just astounding, I have read many threads over the years on DL about war, civil rights, transexuals. hell even one legendary thread about a missing can of frosting, and NONE of those threads had so many mean angry,, abusive threats and comments as this thread has brought out .

Either DL has indeed turned into a much meaner nastier place over the years, ( as many longtime DLers maintain) or this topic is just WAAAY to upsetting for some.

My God , Debate Clubs in High Schools and Universities debate Flat vs Round Earth all the time as an exercise in debating skills and critical thinking, for both sides, when did it become so forbidden that trolls are screaming to FF the very idea of discussing it?

by Anonymousreply 61September 10, 2015 3:56 PM

[quote] insulting people with legitimate questions?

*snort* good one ... oh wait, you were serious?

R61, those were *training* exercises, not discussions of legitimate debate topics. Also, It isn't the topic that's bothering people, it's the sheer, enormous stupidity behind it. And if you think the people calling for F&Fing are the trolls then you're as looney toons as OP.

This is not a legitimate topic unless you're brain damaged or 3 years old.

by Anonymousreply 62September 10, 2015 4:04 PM

I smell Witchie Poo Shoes all over this thread.

by Anonymousreply 63September 10, 2015 4:09 PM

So, Earth is flat, even though every other heavenly body we've seen is a sphere... mmmkay....

by Anonymousreply 64September 10, 2015 4:52 PM

Let's go back to 5th grade science! How do we know the Earth is a sphere? Let me count the ways.

The horizon, which limits our range of sight even with high powered lenses. However, if you go up in height, the horizon is pushed out, increasing the range of sight. That would make no sense if the Earth was flat, but it makes perfect sense if you are looking out over a curved surface.

The Coriolis effect.

Timezones.

The effect of the center of gravity on Earth is consistent with a sphere.

The shadow cast by the earth during an eclipse.

The changing shape of shadows as the sun "moves" over the Earth's surface.

The visibility of stars and their position at various points on Earth.

The observation of objects (such as ships) as they traverse the horizon, and the observation while on a moving ship of fixed objects on the horizon.

Changes in the length of daylight, otherwise known as seasons, as the spherical Earth shifts during its orbit around the sun.

The effects of gravity on objects such as long-range missiles are consistent with launching over a sphere. In fact they are designed with that expectation.

And of course there is direct observation from planes, space shuttles and satellites, not to mention the overwhelming photographic evidence we have.

Now OP, it's time for your milk and cookies and a nap.

by Anonymousreply 65September 10, 2015 5:08 PM

Please don't pick on milk and cookies.

by Anonymousreply 66September 11, 2015 12:48 AM

by Anonymousreply 68September 12, 2015 1:03 PM

You really don't think someone would have gone and filmed this giant ice wall by now? And what happens if it melts due to global warming? Will all the water fall off the earth?

When what your eyes show you, what proven science shows you, and all the photographic and video evidence from space missions and satellites show you all add up to the same conclusion, and you still deny it... I think that just means there's something wrong with your ability to reason.

by Anonymousreply 69September 12, 2015 3:18 PM

Has asnyone taken the time to watch flightracker.com oir any of the other flight sites? The flights really do disappear and re-appear over the oceans in the southern hemisphere. Even if the Earth is a globe, that should not be happening right? The track them every inch of the way across vast oceans in the north...why not the south?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 70September 12, 2015 11:37 PM

R70, did you bother to look at the FAQs on the site? Because they explain that. Not to mention that it's pretty fucking obvious they just don't have as many data sources in some areas.

by Anonymousreply 71September 13, 2015 1:04 AM

They can track flights over Greenland and the Arctic Ocean with no gaps, and there are even less data sources up there I imagine, The south Atlantic is one of the shorter ocean crossings for flights, and there are tracking stations on St Helena, Tristan da Cunha, Cape Verde Islands, Azores, Canary Islands, the Mid Atlantic has the best radar tracking coverage of any ocean area in the world, they can track a tropical depression off the coast of Senegal all the way to it's a hurricane pounding Miami without missing a inch of it's progress,so the FAQ is BS. and provide no real answers as to this gap, but I am far more interested in the Infrequentl;y Asked Questions, something your programming just won't even let you consider will it?

BTW R71, I am fairly new to the site , but I would just love to know where the FAQ section is? But why should we believe what the fringe internet "media" says about 74 Dead NASA Scientists , what does the mainstream media have to say? What about NASA? Well here is NASA publicity website space.,com, very reputable, MSM type of source.

They have plenty to say, you just have to search the right words...

by Anonymousreply 80September 13, 2015 3:43 AM

Yes, if you can read words, you can see that the link at R78 includes people on the list of "dead NASA scientists" who didn't work for NASA and had nothing to do with that branch of science. And if you can read the link at R80, you can see it honors a variety of people who worked in science-related fields, including those who had nothing to do with NASA, such as science fiction writers. And if you can add, you can also see that the NASA-related deaths are nowhere near 74 in 2 years. But if you can keep repeating something to try to make it true, then I say aliens are the reason planes disappear from planefinder.net.
