His career was red hot for a while there.
Became a writer. Oscar nominated too.

Red hot? No. He was cute, though.
He became a successful screenwriter, too
by Anonymous | reply 2 | September 8, 2015 2:12 AM |
Writer/producer now. Still hot.
How long ago *was* Judging Amy on?
by Anonymous | reply 3 | September 8, 2015 2:13 AM |
IMDB!!!!!! is your friend!!!!!
by Anonymous | reply 4 | September 8, 2015 2:13 AM |
He looks like Bradley Cooper's son!

Cunt!!!!!

I like him. He's tried some memorable pro-gay roles (Will/Grace, Far Harbor, Urbania and Sex/City). I only saw Far Harbor once and it's hard to find.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | September 8, 2015 2:16 AM |
ok r6. I'm sorry.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | September 8, 2015 2:17 AM |
What IMDB, r4? He has no actor, writer, producer credits since 2014.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | September 8, 2015 2:18 AM |
Is he homosexual?
by Anonymous | reply 10 | September 8, 2015 2:19 AM |
When I saw Dan Futterman in the WILL AND GRACE role as Karen's gay nephew that Will and Jack were trying to whip into shape, he seemed familiar but I couldn't quite place him, probably the scruffy beard, glasses and sloppy look, after they cleaned him up I was like, Okay that is the guy that played the son in the Robin Williams movie The Bird Cage. Both him and Calista Flockhart were way too old to be playing those parts however.

It is only 2015. He just did Foxcatcher. Writing is a slow process.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | September 8, 2015 2:22 AM |
OP he was just nominated for his second Oscar THIS YEAR. How clueless are you?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | September 8, 2015 2:22 AM |
He was great in Urbania.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | September 8, 2015 2:25 AM |
He's married to a woman, TV writer Anya Epstein.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | September 8, 2015 2:26 AM |
Was he a straight gay man or a gay straight man?
by Anonymous | reply 16 | September 8, 2015 2:40 AM |
His wanking scene in Urbania is one of the hottest mainstream sex scenes I've seen.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | September 8, 2015 6:25 AM |
yes r17, love his elastic legged boxer briefs.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | September 8, 2015 6:29 AM |
Loved him in Shooting Fish. I find his screenwriting rather tortuous. CAPOTE was leaden, GRACEPOINT was middling and when he took over from Rodrigo Garcia writing for IN TREATMENT the quality plummeted.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | September 8, 2015 6:44 AM |
He's a real Elizabeth Taylor Jew. The guy is simply beautiful!

I actually agree with R19, prefer him as an actor to screenwriter - though I haven't seen FOXCATCHER yet. Regardless of what I think, he's certainly a very successful screenwriter who appears to have a long second career ahead of him.
And, yes, he was so hot in URBANIA. In fact, this thread got me IMDB'ing John Shear, the actor-turned-director behind URBANIA. Was sad to see that URBANIA remains Shear's one writing/directing credit. It's been 15 yrs since I saw the film, but I do recall thinking it was a cut above the usual gay cinema of the time. He doesn't have an acting credit past 1996 and the only other credits after 2000 are "Thanks" credits (perhaps script doctoring?) for LEAVE IT ON THE FLOOR (2011) and THE JOB (2009). It's a bummer that absolutely wretched crap like ANOTHER GAY MOVIE and the EATING OUT series continue to get produced while Shear, a very talented (and gay?) director, can't get anything produced in 15 years. Or perhaps he left the biz? Either way, it's too bad. Would love to see him direct again.

He was de facto a better actor than Paul Rudd.

He’s very, very handsome
by Anonymous | reply 26 | February 14, 2021 12:37 AM |
I always enjoyed him.

R21, Jon Shear is alive and well, teaching MFA directors at NYU. Incredible teacher, maybe the best in NYC. And he's not gay! As an actor, he was Jon Matthews - check IBDB.

r28, you're trying to talk to someone who posted more than five years ago.
This is yet another thread that was bumped up by the Threads from Five Years Ago Troll. May he burn in hell.

I like him in The Birdcage

He was in the closing cast of the original "Angels in America" on broadway. He was kind of annoying as I recall, but pretty good. I was and am jealous of his career.

Hey R29, you never know! I've been posting here since 1994!
(I know, I'm pathetic.)

I know him as Josh from Big Girls Don't Cry... They Get Even (1991).
by Anonymous | reply 37 | July 23, 2021 4:08 PM |
For some reason, I got the impression that when he hit that moment when his acting career took off, he became insufferable.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | July 23, 2021 4:14 PM |
Another interesting tidbit...Jon Shear has been in a relationship for over 30 years with TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT's Deborah Van Valkenburgh.
