The Golden Age Of Porn

If you saw "Boogie Nights", it took place during times you had to go to a movie theater to see a porn film. And they were films. There is a great website called "The Rialto Report" that has dozens of stories and interviews with the casts and makers of classic smut.Ashely West, the moderator has a very cool voice. Most video stores carried these movies in the 80's & 90's. Not much gay porn content but a lot of the people involved are gone now. Website not exactly G rated.

The men in the 1970's were hotter, with all that body hair and facial hair. Manly, yes, and I like it, too.

This is a gay web site, you idiot. Take that straight stuff somewhere else.

by Anonymousreply 2September 4, 2015 1:13 AM

r1, not really. They look gross and skinny to me. I'm not attracted to hairy men, so I prefer today's buff jocks by far

by Anonymousreply 3September 4, 2015 1:16 AM

Lots of boobs and porn staches. .

by Anonymousreply 4September 4, 2015 1:18 AM

I love the porn from the 70's the straight stuff. Video ruined porn.

Body hair rules

Video ruined gay sex. How many gymnastic feats must I perform to bust my nut? All of them, Katie.

Shut the hell up and leave if your delicate sensibility is offended. "Boogie Nights" wasn't just seen by straight people. It's not just about the porn you fool, it's about film making, these guys risked being arrested everyday, even after the film was showing in theaters, not just during the making of it. Oh and by the way, there is gay porn discussed too.

by Anonymousreply 7September 4, 2015 1:54 AM

There's an extensive interview with George Payne, who was a gay porn icon well before he started doing straight porn.

by Anonymousreply 8September 4, 2015 4:19 AM

R8 There's also gay porn director Wakefield Poole and Jeff Stryker interviews (podcasts, whatever) also. Sharon Kane is kinda an honorary gay man too, she fucked more gay and bi guys than many gay men have.

But to be honest many of the gay porn stars from that era are long dead so there isn't a big selection to interview. And several of the straight stars they've interviewed, although all not published on site or that were done for the documentary their working on or for future articles, have since died as well.

I've listened to most of the podcasts and most of them are great listens. They really humanize each one and let their real personalities and stories come out.

A lot of the articles are great reads also. My favorite was the one on Dolly Sharp of "Deep Throat" fame (she played Linda Lovelace's friend). She was a broadway actress and dancer under her real name of Helen Wood and even had a MGM contract at one point and was in the movie "Give a Girl a Break" and danced alongside Debbie Reynolds and Marge Champion!

Not all of us are dead. Alex deRenzy was really the father of porn. Frenchie's K&T ran the arcade business in most big American cities. Legally it was a very dangerous business. But we all enjoyed the clandestine and naughty fun we had. Seems like a lifetime ago.

by Anonymousreply 10September 4, 2015 5:20 AM

R10 Since you worked for deRenzy you were on the straight side. What was your porn name?

Yes, great story, she did sex films on the side thinking anyone would ever see them. Then she did "Deep Throat" and everyone knew. She had the famous line where she was sitting on a counter top with a guy between her legs and says "Do you mind if I smoke....while you eat?"

I think her mainstream career was pretty much over by the time did porn. Her story was somewhat similar to Georgina Spelvin's in that way. They were getting too old to be regularly employed as dancers on (and off) Broadway.

I like that they put in a lot of research on their podcasts and articles. They do more research than some mainstream news sites. I guess that is the sad state of journalism these days though.

Here's another interesting (and with some of gay interest) posting by them of some of Jamie Gillis' private scrapbooks. It had photos of him with one of his male lovers from back in 70s (the young latino looking guy), one of his transsexual lovers and Jamie dressed up in drag. He was far beyond bisexual, more like trysexual. He had very few sexual limits.

The Rialto Report uploaded a podcast yesterday interviewing the actor/director from the golden age of porn, Paul Thomas. He had legitimate acting credits, performed in Hair on Bway, was in the movie version of Jesus Christ Superstar too. , Real name is Philip Toubus. He comes from a very affluent family and grew up in Glencoe on Chicago's North Shore. He said his father was a real shady businessman who was in and out of jail for scams. He also said his dad was a slum lord that owned loads of apartment buildings on Chicago's southside.

I'd never heard of Paul Thomas ever being in a gay role and assumed he was 100 percent hetero. However, he says in the interview that he's bi even though he's mainly only been into women, but he relates these stories from his teens.

He talked about being very sexually active from a young age. He said when he was around 13, he was masturbating with his orthodontist regularly. The guy would always give him a late in the day appt. when no one was around. He'd pretend to accidently drop things in the kids lap and then stroke his cock when he reached down to pick it up.

Then also when he was a young horny teen in the 1960s he would go to a magazine store in Evanston, IL and in the back aisle we're adult theme magazines. He'd go to that section and there'd always be guys browsing in that area giving him lots of eye contact. He'd give them eye contact back and then they'd go outside, usually to the older guy's cars and hook up. Masturbation and blow jobs type stuff. Same thing happened when an adult movie theater opened in Chicago and he started sneaking into it.

The female interviewing asked if he ever did more that that with guys and he said no. He said one of these hook-ups tried to kiss him but he pushed him away. So he described himself as bisexual but said he really was only hot for females but they were hard to get. Guys were much easier to hook up with at that young age and it was no strings attached sex unlike with women.

He sounds like a Kinsey 1 or 2.

Interesting thread.

The Rialto Report is really interesting and some of the podcasts are great. Yes, there's some gay male content indeed, but the amount of gay porn shown in theaters in that time (as opposed to loops) is miniscule compared to straight porn.

In cities that didn't have a gay porn theater (or a separate room for gay porn), guys would have to cruise each other while straight porn was playing.

Film was and is far superior to videotape. Digital video doesn’t look as good, either.

There’s something about shooting on actual film stock (the way ALL movies were shot up until about 2007) that lends the project a feeling of legitimacy no matter what kind of garbage it is. Not that I’m calling porn ‘garbage’, but you know what I mean.

I can’t digital video seriously as a tool/medium.

Seriously? There's a fairly well-known gay "loop" out there featuring Paul doing it all.
