What causes "crazy eyes"?

When we look at photos of mass shooters or psychopaths like Charles Manson, the eyes are nearly always a dead giveaway that this person is not normal. Why is that? Did they always have that crazy gleam or does it only appear after something "snaps"? In the thread about the Newtown shooter, someone posted a photo of him as a boy and he didn't look deranged at all.

by Anonymousreply 48June 17, 2020 8:38 PM

If we look at every photo of you ever taken OP, we will be bound to come across one with crazy eyes. When you go rogue that is the one that will be given to the public in order to dehumanize you.

by Anonymousreply 1September 3, 2015 6:29 PM

Reba McIntyre has crazy eyes. In non-serial killers, it's often a combination of eyes being close together coupled with an overzealous widening of the eyes. Just bad luck. And in serial killers, it's caused by the crazy.

by Anonymousreply 2September 3, 2015 6:34 PM

Not all those guys have crazy eyes, though. Many look pretty normal. Ted Bundy comes to mind. Pretty attractive guy.

by Anonymousreply 3September 3, 2015 6:36 PM

Lots of people have crazy eyes. Have you seen a recent photo of Alton Brown?

I've noticed it in early pictures, like photographs of the Civil War. I figure back then it came from people having to look at the camera and hold a pose for a length of time. That might still be part of it.

It's a very good question, thinking about it. It's that animal energy coming out when they want to kill? Bet Bundy had it when he was killing. Thinking now of when animals kill, do they have 'crazy eyes'?

by Anonymousreply 7September 3, 2015 6:55 PM

You mean like this, OP?

R7 Bundy absolutely had it when he was killing. I've read books about him and one of the policemen who interviewed him said it sounds like something out of a horror film but he'd show him a photo of one of his decomposed victims and his pupils would go so big it made his eyes look black. When he was doing his fake-arm-cast trick he scared some potential victims off with his freaky eyes and unnatural eye-contact. He was looking at them as intently as an animal looking at prey.

by Anonymousreply 18September 3, 2015 9:08 PM

Whoa! I am NEVER going to forget that. Fascinating! Do you remember what book was that?

by Anonymousreply 19September 3, 2015 9:10 PM

Its whenever someone is severly off balance, whatever the cause of that may be. That crazy look. Some people are unbalanced all the time, despite holding down a full time job and outwardly appearing to live a normal life......the eyes tell a different story about how stable things actually are.

I really don't like looking directly into people's eyes because so much is revealed without being said. Its the bad things I mean. Resentments, jealousy. I pick up on it rapidly and it deeply saddens me when I see it in family and friends.

by Anonymousreply 20September 3, 2015 9:21 PM

R19 Not off the top of my head. The six Bundy books I have are The Only Living Witness, The Stranger Beside Me, The Deliberate Stranger, Conversations With A Killer, The Riverman and Defending The Devil. I'll see if I can find it with the Google Books search function.

thank you:)

It must have been The Riverman. I just found the following two quotes:

"The only physical quirk Bundy displayed, which was noticeable only to an alert observer, was his abnormal use of eye contact. The living witnesses from Lake Sammamish noticed that the Ted who tried to pick them up had a strange stare while he was talking to them. It was as if his eyes were transfixed on his prey, like the eyes of a cat."

and

"Ted obviously understood that the photo was turned so he couldn’t see it, and he didn’t hesitate to grasp and rotate it until he was looking at the photo correctly.

"Immediately, the contortions of Ted’s face told us that he was morbidly transfixed by the Devine scene. His jaw protruded, and his pupils were hideously dilated. His pulse bulged and radiated through his carotid artery like a huge water bump in a garden hose. I felt suddenly as if he were alone with his thoughts, replaying an internal video of his murder, even with us there."

r28 It's super-rare and sought-after. It's $174.00 on Amazon and $150 on eBay, however someone scanned every page and posted it to Facebook. I see there's a version on a CD-R on eBay too but that's probably the same Facebook scan converted to PDF.

It is thought that sociopathic "shark eyes" are due to an evolutionary advantage the individual has retained from hunter/gatherer days in which the individual needed superior depth perception to single out prey in the wild.

Look at any photo of Simon Halls.

This is the most ridiculously over-the-top, purple-prose true-crime-porn I've ever seen.

This writer must be a favorite of the cream-your-jeans- frau crime porn readers.

"A satanic grin was etched upon his face. His victim gasped and begged for mercy, which only further awakened the animal bloodlust that percolated beneath his daily disguise as a friendly father figure. A rage was burning within him, a black hearted, four alarm fire that could only be quenched by the prolonged sexual torture of his victim. The young woman looked into his blackened irises and saw the demonic flame burning within, instantly knowing her fate was to be a most grisly one. One can only hope the shock of seeing the fearsome fate about to be accorded to her would cause her to faint, thus sparing her some of the most horrific acts ever performed upon the flesh and bones of a fellow human being!!!"
