Another dull documentary by this bore of a filmmaker who managed to even make Divine uninteresting.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | August 18, 2015 11:43 PM |
So when is it opening for the general public? Or straight to video?
by Anonymous | reply 4 | August 18, 2015 11:47 PM |
The Divine bio sucked because there had already been previous ones, and anyone familiar with Divine's story already knew everything in "I Am Divine." It was like watching a rerun. With Tab, I've never seen a documentary about him and specifically being a closeted star, so it won't be going over such familiar territory.

Thanks for the link, r1 - Tab looked hot as hell in that gilette commercial

Tab Hunter was incredibly sexy. Who does our generation have?

It wasn't only the Divine doc that sucked. He did Vito and some non-gay stuff and they all feel like the exact same documentary.
Tab's book wasn't all that thrilling so already he's already going in with less than exciting material.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | August 19, 2015 1:18 AM |
Yeah, but he's so pretty. As long as they use lots of eye candy vintage footage, I'm sure it can smooth over any rough edges. I was like everyone else seeing that eye-popping vintage footage of the blond wonder, taken aback by it, and I'd certainly like to see more. And "I Am Divine" wasn't torture, it was just 20 yrs too late with no original material. Newbies to the material could've reasonably enjoyed it.

Tab and Natalie Wood 'pretend' that they're engaging in a 3-way with Robert Wagner.

[quote] Tab Hunter was incredibly sexy. Who does our generation have?
Matt Bomer, for one. He's just as blandly pretty as Tab and with about as much charisma- none.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | August 19, 2015 4:51 PM |
Hunter's book was very elliptical. I assumed someone was going to do a "tell all". This doesn't quite look like it.

Jeffrey Schwartz's films are the epitome of elliptical.

He really had me going there. Such a hunk of a man ...... (for Baltimore)
by Anonymous | reply 15 | August 19, 2015 7:38 PM |
So...anyone know when it will be available for viewing?

Look, Francine -- TAB, for our diets!

In 1964, Tab Hunter appeared in a 5-performance flop play, THE MILK TRAIN DOESN'T STOP HERE ANYMORE, written by Tennessee Williams. The chapter in his book describing the play, and his co-stars Tallulah Bankhead and Marian Seldes is a wonderful, dishy read. When he was autographing his book, I asked him about the play. He just laughed and said 'it was quite an experience'.
He also appeared on 'Startime' an Ethel Merman television special in 1959
A gay boy's dream to appear with these icons.

[quote]Tab Hunter was incredibly sexy. Who does our generation have?
Zac Efron. Both gorgeous heartthrobs and both extremely closeted.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | October 12, 2015 8:54 PM |
I understand the documentary is far more revealing about Tab's personal experiences in 1950s Hollywood than his autobiography was.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | October 12, 2015 9:08 PM |
Has anyone seen it?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | October 13, 2015 12:23 AM |
Is it just me that can't access the first few posts of this thread including the OP's?
by Anonymous | reply 23 | October 13, 2015 12:33 AM |
R19
And the play was made into the 1968 stinker BOOM starring Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Noel Coward & Michael Dunn.

Someone should do a documentary on the making of "Boom!". It might gross more than the actual film did. Tab was about as gorgeous an actor as ever appeared in Hollywood, and I watch "Damn Yankees " whenever it's on.

Just watched this documentary tonight on Netflix. The reviews and buzz on it weren't very good but I loved it! Don't listen to the above posters, most of whom (it seems) haven't seen it.
Definitely recommended viewing if you've ever been a fan of Tab's or are curious about his life as a closeted star in 1950s Hollywood. Unlike his disappointing autobiography, here he's very honest and forthcoming about his experiences and talks candidly about his relationships with agent Henry Willson, producer Jack Warner, director George Abbott and early loves skater Ronnie Robertson and, of course, Tony Perkins.
Lots of cameo appearances by admiring contemporaries Clint Eastwood, Debbie Reynolds, Robert Wagner, Terry Moore, Don Murray, Connie Stevens, Rona Barrett and others. And John Waters, who clearly adores him.
The footage of him throughout his career show that he never took a bad picture. And he still looks gorgeous in the current narration shots.

This is a man who needs to be cloned. His DNA is incredible, he looks so healthy for being in his eighties, and of course he was impossibly gorgeous in his youth.

I agree with r26. I watched this in Netfix and really enjoyed it. I didn't know that much about him but the footage and his story are very fun. Plus, he really is always just a pleasure to look at. Completely recommend it.

My God he was beautiful! Even in his high school photos he was already a blond god.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | June 10, 2016 7:15 AM |
I loved the various interviews with the 80-something women who were fans, high school classmates and won movie magazine contest dates with Tab.
The woman who told the story of how Tab couldn't walk down the school corridors without being mobbed by girls (long before he became a star) was truly hilarious and yet also sad and enlightening giving insight into what turned young Arthur Gelien into Tab.
All those young candid photos of Tab when he was a teen show this golden unearthly beauty and charisma. How could he not wind up in Hollywood?

I went to see this in Denver last year and was surprised when Tab and his partner were there to talk about the film. Really enjoyed the film -- wished it had been longer, even. And Tab looked amazing. Very well-spoken and articulate.

r3 r5 I actually thought his documentary about Divine was good. Before the screaming DL Mimis come after me, check out the ratings on Rotten Tomatoes.

Yummy.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | June 10, 2016 3:05 PM |
I wonder if Tab Hunter and Richard Chamberlain have ever been lovers in the past. I guess not...?
by Anonymous | reply 34 | June 10, 2016 3:22 PM |
One little disappointment in the doc for me: I wish Tab had talked about other gay stars of the time like Rock Hudson and Richard Chamberlain and how he interacted with them socially.....not necessarily sexually, just what sort of acknowledgement there might have been back then.
Of course, maybe there was nothing to say. He certainly talks at length about his long affair with Tony Perkins and its repercussions. I loved his wistful recollection of meeting up with him many years later. So sad.

[quote]Tab Hunter was incredibly sexy. Who does our generation have?
Shia LaBoeuf, the "new James Dean."
by Anonymous | reply 36 | June 10, 2016 5:11 PM |
Tab Hunter has said that Rock Hudson was not his type...
by Anonymous | reply 37 | June 10, 2016 5:16 PM |
What a delight to see Mother Dolores Hart and old girlfriends Debbie Reynolds, Terry Moore, Venetia Stevenson, and Etchika Choureau.
I really felt for Tab when he described going to confession as a teen and the priest making him feel horrible about himself, so he stopped going to church. I had a similar experience, but once I left the Catholic church, I never looked back. Tab was able to resolve his crisis with the church and returned to the fold.

Met him in Austin, nice man, didn't really want to be considered a big role model but he was for me. And the best looking man in his prime ever to walk the earth.

He was incredibly beautiful. Interestingly, it never went to his head and he never seemed to care much about physical beauty--not as much as what was inside. His long-term relationships were with decidedly average looking men.

His long time partner has woman voice and not goodlooking
by Anonymous | reply 48 | March 19, 2018 12:27 AM |
Who the hell wants to watch that? He was a lousy actor and not even that hot. I guess if one lives long enough and outlives all of his peers he automatically becomes a legend.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | March 19, 2018 12:32 AM |
He was good looking. Read his book and it was incredibly boring.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | March 19, 2018 12:36 AM |
r49 agree about the lousy actor part but not about the "not hot" part - he was gorgeous
by Anonymous | reply 51 | March 19, 2018 1:10 AM |
R51 I said it before on some recent thread, but what makes Hunter totally unattractive for me is that dumb expression he always had on his face, with his mouth always opened (like in that photo at R43). To me he always looked like a dumb jock who just found out Mount Rushmore isn't a natural phenomena and is still trying to process that information.

I'm 5 years late to this conversation (but I'm not the 2015 troll, promise) - just saw this for the first time. Had never even heard of him.
He seemed to have no vanity which made him even more beautiful...and even though his career and success was so based on his amazing looks. Good looking men who date other very good looking men are really dating their own reflection, their own vanity.
[quote]His long time partner has woman voice and not goodlooking
yes, the voice - especially when he talks over the film on a few occasions.
But it was cool he ended up with an ordinary looking guy.
What's so extraordinary is how he kept his looks the whole way through - in his 40s and 50s her was the personification of a good looking man of those ages.
It's amazing he didn't crack considering all the monkeys on his back.
He was REALLY strong and positive.
In middle age he looked more like the typical handsome gay man. I've met plenty of handsome middle aged gay guys who look like this.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | December 9, 2020 1:02 AM |
maybe above average - due to his great eyes.
