The Last Lesbian Bars
San Francisco, New York, Washington DC, and New Orleans are four of the biggest gay party meccas in America, yet the cities' lesbian bars keep shutting down. Why are lesbian bars dying while gay male clubs continue to thrive? Is it because of rising rent prices, the stereotype of lesbians moving in after the first date, the rise of the trans rights movement, or something more complex?

Neighborhoods, demographics have changed. There are other ways to meet people. And even though I'm not a fan of meeting people via the Internet, it has certainly affected all aspects of our lives including the bar scene.

Firstly, Lesbians have NO money, so they can't support these businesses. What's branded as the 'gay lifestyle' is really the gay male lifestyle. Whether you go to Castro, Santa Monica, or Chelsea, these gay meccas are frequented almost exclusively by gay men.
As a percentage of the female population, lesbians are probably less than 1%. This is further exacerbated by the enormous drop out rate. I personally know 7 lesbians who dropped out of the lifestyle once they hit their mid 30s to early 40s. They are all now settled down with men and several have started families with their husbands.
They tried to start a lesbian version of grindr, it failed because there are so few lesbians. Even online dating sites have miniscule lesbian dating pools compared to gay men. You can keep lesbian businesses going if your target market is virtually non-existent.

Can you provide a link to that stat, r18. I don't think it's true. It is a fact that gay men are by far wealthier than lesbians.

r19, see this link. The report shows that lesbians receive higher salaries in male-dominated professions because lesbians are perceived to be more masculine, while gay men are perceived to be feminine. Queers must crush the white male patriarchy.

OP lesbians bars shut down because lesbians don't like bars, that's as simple as that. And they don't hook up with strangers like men do, which is also why any 'lesbian grindr' would fail.

R23, you halfwitted cunt. I know 7 formerly SELF-IDENTIFYING LESBIANS who are now with men. These were women who self-identified as lesbians for DECADES. One was the president of our college LGBT club and was a militant lesbian. She is now married to a man and has 3 kids. To claim they weren't true lesbians all along is just question begging. Bill de Blasio's wife is a prime example of this phenomenon. Female sexuality is very fluid, so a woman can self-identify as a lesbian for years and then date men later in life.

[quote]so a woman can self-identify as a lesbian for years and then date men later in life.
The overwhelming social pressure to be het coupled with the easier life of a het female is just way too irresistible for some "lesbians" to resist.

I knew a lot of big butch lesbians that are with men now too. What about Holly Near? She's been with a man forever. She was a lesbian separatist singer! TBH, lots of men "turn straight" too, I mean Bowie, Tom Robinson, Jon Moss, etc.
But the main issue is this trans stuff I think.
Also, there were NEVER 8 lesbian bars in SF!!! I think the most were 3 or 4 MAX. And that Lexington Club that they're all lamenting about in SF? That was originally an Irish straight dive bar where there were creepy I.R.A types (straight mean Irish & Irish-Americans) that hung out in it. They were pissed when it turned into a lesbian bar, hence I know my SF bars!

Yep, bull dykes ending up marrying men. Not uncommon at all. I knew a lesbian who came out at 17, she was married to a woman for years and they even had a kid together. She has never been with a man and never planned to. At 40 she met a man. At 43 she married that man and has given birth to their daughter and seems very happy. Life is strange.

Gay male bars are diminishing, too. Many have had to close or go straight — hardly "thriving."
But gay men have higher sex drives than lesbians because of their higher testosterone levels. We are sluttier, hornier and more sexually driven, so it's no surprise that internet social networking and gay assimilation might hit lesbian bars the worst.
I think gay men also have more money to spend on average than lesbians, too.

Just to say there's plenty of lesbian nights - clubs and bars - in London. They may not be many bricks and mortar establishments, but they are regular residencies - weekly, bi-weekly - mainly run by lesbian promotors and with a wide range of vibes and scenes. Many have "name" DJs, some are in great venues and they're supplemented by special one-off events.
Most gay women I know frequent them even after they've coupled-up and settled down, just to have a good night out and hang with friends. Most are somewhere on the "femme" scale, for what that's worth and straight female friends often come along too.
So is this just an American thing, I wonder? Genuine question.

The gay male bars thing - supposedly it's being blamed on Grindr, the lesbian thing is being blamed on social media in general, and straight places aka bars, nightclubs, etc are also closing a lot and that is being blamed on Tinder. *Shrug*

I know the A+++ lesbians in LA and they don't hang out at gay bars. The go to the expensive places all the straights go to or hang out at each other's houses.
There were lesbian bars for a while in LA. There was The Palm which was always scary. They also had the Normandy Room. Both are closed. Places like The Abbey have lesbian nights and they are usually pretty fun to go even as a gay man.
I think in smaller cities or like in the midwest, there might be one or two gays bars, which are mixed. In NorCal and SoCal, gays and lesbians down't integrate as much.

Lesbians always had some disadvantages when it came to establishing a bar scene.
One, it was much harder for women to start/own/run their own businesses "back in the day". It's still not easy...the "good ole boys" network prevails in the bar business.
And, unlike gay men, women never had the variety of bars to choose from, to hang out with their own crowd. Gay men in most large metro cities can choose from going to a disco, a leather bar, a sports bar, a cocktail bar, a hipster bar, etc. Gay women have seldom have had that opportunity so all types of women had to go to one bar.
And, let's be honest...most lesbian bars were/are really DYKE bars which tend to be dominated by the lady jock types. "Lipstick" lesbians and more upscale types don't feel at home in that environment. The younger generations aren't programmed into those stereotypes and many of them are VERY 'woke' and uncomfortable in those kinds of bars. And, the younger crowd is not into gender defined spaces; they want bars where everyone can go and since most old school lesbian bars were very strict about NOT letting men in, they either had to start letting them in, or go out of business. And, that drove a lot of lesbians away from going to bars.
We should also not forget that lesbians are cheap. Yes, this is a very broad generalization (I've known very generous lesbians. And, some insanely cheap ones.). They're not very good at supporting their bars.

Victim hood creates monsters, lesbians can't get along with each other or anyone else. They seek out mixed spaces where there's a buffer to keep the peace.

Here's an interesting article about the history of lesbian bars in New Orleans. Charlene's was the bar that drew women from across the Gulf South, but ultimately it couldn't stay in business. Baby dyke Ellen was a regular there. Even then, though, they had a strong drag queen clientele amid the butches and femmes.

This is probably the one problem in the Lesbian community you can’t blame on trans. I am sure any lesbian bar that opened up nowadays would be overflowing with AGP. It might actually be a good businesses model. Encourage AGP to come and spend their money on drinks while the actual lesbians go home with each other.
