Which aspects/icons etc... of past popular culture are the younger generations of today still aware of?

The Beatles, obviously.

Audrey Hepburn.

Swinging '60s London (& many aspects of it) also seems to be very popular with young people.

Anything else? There must be a lot more....'70s America?

(This is a follow up the conversation going on in the Laurel & Hardy thread).

There was an overly long thread on "Groove Is in the Heart" on Friday.

by Anonymousreply 1August 16, 2015 8:42 PM

Star Wars, Star Trek

The Brady Bunch

Rockabilly music...Elvis, obviously

The Rat Pack

James Dean

The Beats - Jack Kerouac, William S. Burroughs in particular

Andy Warhol, The Factory, Studio 54

by Anonymousreply 2August 16, 2015 8:46 PM

Just waiting for some old queen to type the words "Judy Garland"

I assume An Unmarried Woman is a joke.

It's a quaint notion that things of our generation are remembered by later generations. Few are.

by Anonymousreply 7August 16, 2015 10:16 PM

I assume "I assume An Unmarried Woman is a joke." is a joke.

by Anonymousreply 8August 16, 2015 10:18 PM

Yes...it's jokey.

& why ON EARTH did this image come up when I was looking for an An Unmarried Woman pic to post?

R9 Is that another Kardashian photoshoot?

by Anonymousreply 11August 16, 2015 10:41 PM

Audrey Hepburn!? I doubt it!

I don't think kids under 30 today can even name the seven castaways on Gilligan's Island, and that hurts me.

by Anonymousreply 12August 16, 2015 10:51 PM

[quote]Audrey Hepburn!? I doubt it!

Most definitely Audrey Hepburn.

Yes, I see Audrey merch everywhere from Barnes and Noble to Wal-Mart. She never goes out of style! Also Marilyn Monroe.

R12

The dish Professor is the only one who really counts.

by Anonymousreply 15August 16, 2015 11:01 PM

R14 Not to mention in chocolate commercials in uncanny valley reanimated CGI form.

by Anonymousreply 16August 16, 2015 11:03 PM

I'm 23 I've noticed some my friends and colleagues really like James Dean, Marlon Brando, Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Paul Newman, Elvis and listen to 60s music.

by Anonymousreply 17August 16, 2015 11:08 PM

[quote]I'm 23 I've noticed some my friends and colleagues really like James Dean,

I was twenty three in the 80s and he was very popular with young people then too. His image was all over everything.

by Anonymousreply 18August 16, 2015 11:10 PM

Bond. James Bond.

by Anonymousreply 19August 16, 2015 11:10 PM

James Bond is still going, R19.

by Anonymousreply 20August 16, 2015 11:27 PM

Really? Young people of today know any of the above? Really? Okay.

by Anonymousreply 21August 16, 2015 11:34 PM

Johnny Cash

by Anonymousreply 22August 16, 2015 11:37 PM

None. The dead have no twitter accounts.

by Anonymousreply 23August 16, 2015 11:38 PM

The Godfather & Godfather 2 Muppets / Disney Hippies as an aesthetic

by Anonymousreply 24August 16, 2015 11:43 PM

Batman

Audrey Hepburn

Marilyn Monroe

Bond

Dracula and Frankenstein

by Anonymousreply 25August 17, 2015 12:06 AM

Madonna and Elton John of course

by Anonymousreply 26August 17, 2015 1:06 AM

R26 I think Madonna is not so well known with Gen Z? "Get Into the Groove" maybe because it sounds so 80s

She wrecked it by staying around too long so she just seems uncool rather than retro.

by Anonymousreply 27December 8, 2020 5:19 AM

Ummm Golden Girls

(Just saw that this is a 2015 thread bumped, whoops)

by Anonymousreply 28December 8, 2020 6:23 AM

Betty White!

by Anonymousreply 29December 8, 2020 7:37 AM

Kids know The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Fleetwood Mac, Marvin Gaye, The Stones, Elvis, Buddy Holly, and The Supremes.

Kids don't know Rod Stewart, Linda Rondstadt, The Everly Brothers, The Osmonds, Leif Garrett, Annette Funicello, Neil Sedaka, or Barbara Streisand.

by Anonymousreply 30December 8, 2020 7:54 AM

[quote] "or Barbara Streisand."

Oh, dear.

by Anonymousreply 31December 8, 2020 8:02 AM

I think the youngsters know who Barbra is.

by Anonymousreply 32December 8, 2020 8:06 AM

R32 they most definitely do not.

by Anonymousreply 33December 8, 2020 10:04 AM

They certainly don't know the classic stars like Clark Gable - I know, I asked my nieces and nephews (ages under 25). They didn't even know who Charlie Chaplin was.

by Anonymousreply 34December 8, 2020 1:22 PM

How about Andy Warhol? I was in college when he died and mentioned it to my friend and he didn’t know who he was. I thought everyone knew about him back then, but can’t think that kids today would except maybe the really artsy ones.

by Anonymousreply 35December 8, 2020 1:57 PM

They seem to quite like The Breakfast Club.

by Anonymousreply 36December 8, 2020 2:13 PM

Tiny Tim.

by Anonymousreply 37December 8, 2020 2:16 PM

Marilyn Monroe, although I'm guessing most couldn't name her movies

by Anonymousreply 38December 8, 2020 2:16 PM

R36, the Breakfast Club, yes. Breakfast at Tiffany's? -- I think doubtful.

by Anonymousreply 39December 8, 2020 2:17 PM

i think the young GURLS know Breakfast At Tiffany's
