It won't be the same. Kirk Douglas didn't spend decades scolding people for their behavior, and his persona was never that squeaky clean. He played adsholes and tough guys, not funny dads. He also has a powerful son to stick up for him.

Plus, one rape accusation for which there have been rumors for decades doesn't compare to the dozens for Cosby. Had only one or two people accused Cosby, his reputation might have been salvageable, unfortunately.

It wasn't a terribly common name in 1949 but there were probably hundreds of thousands of Kirks in the L.A. area, but some people have wondered if the note were meant for the well-known Kirk Douglas. There has never been any other evidence linking him to Spangler or the murder.

The rape rumors were based on a blind item in a book about Natalie Wood, where they said she had been raped at 15 and gave a bunch of clues that seemed to point to Douglas. The source of the item (Lana?) said she'd name the rapist when he died, and Douglas is still alive. That one isn't confirmed, but seems likely.

You can't compare him to Polanski. Polanskis' victim gave grand jury testimony and Polanski pled guilty to a lesser charge. Natalie Wood is dead and never gave testimony. At this point it's just a guess.

She'd been an extra in a film with Kirk Douglas (Young Man With a Horn) just prior to her murder. Apparently Douglas phoned the LAPD on his own to tell them he wasn't the Kirk in the note, which seemed odd to people at the time.

Bob Cummings remembered her from The Petty Girl and said she seemed happy, and had a new beau after divorcing her husband.

Since she told relatives she was heading out to see her ex-husband Dexter, and since the note to "Kirk" was still in her purse, it's very likely that this Kirk wasn't involved in her disappearance. She was probably killed by Dexter, who left her purse there at the entrance to Griffith Park while he dumped the body. He later refused to let Jean's mom see their child (her granddaughter) and after serving time for refusing to let her see the girl, he just took her and ran off.

That said, whoever Kirk was, he certainly sounds like the guy who got Jean pregnant, given the content of the note. And considering Douglas' panicky reaction, I wouldn't be surprised to find out he was the father.

R34 I don't remember hearing anything. If Douglas did rape Wood, he likely had to pay some people to keep quiet.

Wood's mother and her friends including Dennis Hopper knew about the rape right after it happened and a number of them are still living and told Suzanne Finstad (who wrote an extensive biography on Wood) who it was.
