Tyra was NEVER a supermodel. A supermodel does editorials, high fashion & commercial work and must have made at least one american vogue cover. Christie never did high fashion but she is by all means the supe from the 70s and early 80s.
Tyra was NEVER a supermodel. A supermodel does editorials, high fashion & commercial work and must have made at least one american vogue cover. Christie never did high fashion but she is by all means the supe from the 70s and early 80s.
Unfortunately, Tyra is often included in "Supermodel" lists.
The problem is in what the definition of a "supermodel" is. Everyone has their own definition. According to Wikipedia a supermodel is:
Supermodels usually work for top fashion designers and famous clothing brands. They have multi-million dollar contracts, endorsements and campaigns. They have branded themselves as household names and worldwide recognition is associated with their modeling careers.
By the 1990s, the supermodel became increasingly prominent in the media.[64] The title became tantamount to superstar, to signify a supermodel's fame having risen simply from "personality." Supermodels did talk shows, were cited in gossip columns, partied at the trendiest nightspots,[63] landed movie roles, inspired franchises, dated or married film stars, and earned themselves millions.[15] Fame empowered them to take charge of their careers, to market themselves, and to command higher fees.
And that just opens up the door for a lot of lame people to be named a "supermodel." They even list Kathy Ireland as one. Then again it doesn't list Tyra there.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | August 13, 2015 8:17 PM |
I liked how Patti could serve feckled, corn-fed girl-next-door realness as easily as should could slutty rocker chick.

There were models that were world famous before Naomi, Cindy, Linda, Christy, tatjana and Claudia but they weren't referred to as "supermodels". That term was coined in the nineties and referred to this particular group of models. It was sometimes extended to include other famous and rich models like Helena, Elle, Karen and to a lesser extent Tyra but originally it referred to only those 6. You could even argue that in the end Helena replaced Tatjana but she wasn't in the original line up. So although someone like twiggy was world famous in the 60s she was never referred to as a supermodel because there was no such term then.

Crawford became a star but she never measured up to the original 6 IMO.
Crawford didn't have the lithe body to be a true runway model. She was too curvy and hippy.
Crawford excelled at makeup contracts and commercials.
Turlington and the other 5 had the bodies for runway and editorials on top of landing endorsement contracts.

A supermodel should be high fashion as well as commercial, and globally famous too. The only ones who meet that for me are Linda E., Paulina, Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss, Naomi and possibly Christy. For the late 80's and early 90's girls, that has to be list. Paulina was more a early-mid-80's girl.
Elle, Claudia, Christy, Brinkley were more pin up models.

Fucking media are worthless:
"On 31 October 2001, Mulder was interviewed on the France 2 show Tout le monde en parle (Everyone is Talking About It) hosted by Thierry Ardisson in front of a live studio audience. During the shows taping, Mulder claimed that various people had tried to rape her, including top executives at her former agency, Elite Model Management, and Prince Albert of Monaco.
The producers of the show did not broadcast the interview. Not only was the show never aired, but the entire recording was erased. Her father blamed her troubles on drugs. "

The other girls had been long established before waif thin Kate came along. She wasn't part of the original 6 however she made a big impact when she arrived on the scene. Before I did this, I never paid much attention to Christie Brinkley.
However, Christie Brinkley - face to face - is superwatt energy. She radiates. She is electric. And for decades. I haven't seen her for 15 years in person so maybe her batteries have died down a bit, but I doubt it.

You are clearly stupid. Please sit down and refrain from speaking until you have something intelligent to say.
VS is ALL she's known for? NO. Just no.
Tyra surpasses every single model named on this and any other list. Tyra is by far leaps and bounds ahead of every other model in terms of beauty, versatility, and intelligence. No other model has had the success she has had. Has any other model had an Emmy Award Winning Talk show? Or an Emmy Award winning series (ANTM)?
Not only is she an amazing Producer, but as an Actress she has been recognized as one of the best with critically acclaimed performances in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and the ratings juggernaut, "Life Size."
Tyra also has a far superior intelligence that has not been matched in the Model world. Have any of them bought, I mean Graduated from Harvard Business School (from the non-degree, extension 9-week program!)?
And who else but Tyra could take advantage of Naomi's emergency career make over by making her come on her show and apologize to Tyra for slights nobody but Tyra would be bothered by... meanwhile making Naomi grit her teeth and dig her nails into her own palms to prevent her from beating Tyra with her cell phone.
Tyra walked for Versace, Chanel, Valentino and Oscar de la Renta? I seriously thought she only did runway for Victoria's Secret.
Initially, she started in high fashion and did the types of shows referenced above (see YouTube for clips) and magazines such as [italic]Elle[/italic]. Contingent upon whom you ask, she changed direction because Naomi felt threatened by her and convinced the top designers not to hire her, and/or because she got a boob job and was no longer as "high fashion" as she was initially. At that point, she essentially became a swimsuit and lingerie model (with the occasional acting job) pre-ANTM.

R153 I thought Tyra's story was that she got fed up with not being able to have her "natural" body and when Victoria's Secret came knocking she decided to shift her career because she wouldn't have to starve herself.
I mean, Tyra talks out of her ass though.
Was the Naomi/Tyra thing ever really a thing? I always just got the impression that Tyra talked up the whole, "Naomi was threatened by me," thing to make herself sound like a bigger deal than she was. Was Tyra even on Naomi's radar?

Naomi believed that there was only room for one black girl. Apparently, she was right as far as this DL thread goes.
Tyra was fantastic on the runway AND she featured in a George Michael video, so that makes her a supermodel.

As a teenager, Christie Brinkley was my "test" to see if I was gay or not. I would alternate between Kevin Costner and her to see which would make me hard / cum, etc... and when Kevin Costner kept winning....that was the end of that. And "Field of Dreams" really put an end to it.
So, I'd have to say CB is the winner for the era she was in, since her look was rather 90s... but I also posted the above pic of Iman because I think she had striking features & was in at a time when black women still were not given the same respect as others. I just realized we never had any asian supermodels....are there Indian ones? There are some gorgeous & stunning Indian women out there...though culturally, maybe it's not what they aspire to be.

Amber Valletta is tied with Jean Patchett and Claudia Schiffer as the 5th most-featured model on the cover of Vogue (16 covers total, and as a favorite of Anna Wintour, more could be in the pipeline). Additionally, she's one of a very few models who appeared on the cover of time magazine.

Karen Graham modeled before the ridiculous term "supermodel" came to be, but she was the face of Estee Lauder for 12 years, which was about as good as it got in the '70s and '80s. She was also on the cover of Vogue more than a dozen times. Beautiful, classy woman. She came back in the '90s for another campaign and was as beautiful as ever.

Claudia Schiffer may not have a graceful runway walk but if I could have looked like any of the models it would have been her. Her face is not boring. She really does resemble Bridget Bardot. I always noticed her, Cheryl Tiegs, Christie Brinkley, Elle, Cindy, Naomi, Patti Hanson, and some others named here and some I didn't know their names. Linda and Christy didn't really stand out to me as much. Maybe they stood out on the runway.

I didn't really get Linda's and Christy T's appeal in the 90's but I do now after watching videos of them modeling. I have to say most of the models mentioned (except for the current crop - Kendall, Karlie, etc. have yet to prove themselves IMO) so far are very talented (not sure about Ypir) and for me it's hard to say one is better than the other. They are all great.

It's weird how boring the current crop of girls look like when compared with this bunch. I know it's my age talking, since I was 18 when this pic was taken and I was just getting interested in Vogues. My interest was mainly in its photography but I got to know the girls quite well at the same time.

I think it's deliberate that very few girls are household names these days r235. In fact you could argue that with the exception of Giselle anyone not into fashion could barely name anyone other than Giselle.
The 90s supermodels became bigger than the designers. People were turning up to certain shows just to see the girls. It started to annoy the designers so now the preference is to use nobodies with perhaps just one "big" name. They need to be human coat hangers showing off the clothes not stars in their own right out shining the couture. These days putting a certain model on a cover of a magazine doesn't guarantee sales, but with the 90s models it did. If you put Claudia or Cindy on the cover of any magazine it would have flown off the shelf. Now you need a popular actress on a cover to get high sales numbers. Or a freaking Kardashian.

Did any of you here have the pleasure of watching Ypir's talk/variety/game show in her home country? I believe the name was something like "Come, sit, and talk with Ypir". I am no expert in the language but am told that is an approximation as it is difficult to render in English without loss of fidelity.
This must have been at least 25 years ago. While she had lost some of her legendary radiance to age, she was a rose who as she aged exuded a more complex aroma, agreeable to certain, more experienced men who have lived life to know that perfection is but fleeting but that its essence remains. Not being one of those fortunate men, I was content to see her show in person. It was while I was on long-term assignment in North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. I still smile a bit, wistfully, when I think of that night.
There are mere snippets on YouTube now. I understand her government do not want any traces of what they see as Western decadence to be shown. They say the original recordings have been destroyed or lost. Who knows? Perhaps it's for the best. I understand a knife fight between a female guest and Ypir led to the cancellation. It's not known, given the destroyed tapes, who or what started it. Despite high ratings it was thought the new regime wanted to do away with the show and that the knife fight was a pretense (or an orchestrated ploy?) to incite an event serious enough to burn the show into but memories.
I must go now. It's time for my morning bath and breakfast accompanied by a bit of prosecco and one of those lovely cigarettes I'm chided about by the children of the neighbors, some of whom still help this old man.

There were the Big 6 :
Cindy Crawford
Christy Turlington
Linda Evangelista
Naomi Campbell
Tatyana Patitz
Kate Moss, Helena Christensen, Stephanie Seymour came later, replacing an original or two.
Claudia Schiffer was drop dead gorgeous. When she burst upon the scene as the new Guess? girl, I did a double-take. I thought her resemblance to Brigitte Bardot was uncanny.
Almost 300 posts and not even an honorable mention for VENDELA ? She of one word name recognition? Really..? She wasn't as super as some of these girls, but her striking resemblance to Grace Kelly, the beauty ads, cosmetic campaigns and multiple Sports Illustrated covers, should've garnered her a little more recognition. Talk about camera lens meltingly beautiful...Vendela brought it.

R288 Tatiana Patitz? She wasn't part of that class. Hot girl and she got a chance to be Pierce Brosnan's spermcatcher for a time but she was not in Naomi or Linda's category. She wasn't a household name like Cindy,Naomi or Linda either.
Vendela? The model of Turkish and Norwegian(yes she is half Turkish) model looked too much like Grace Kelly. Much like Carolyn Murphy later on. Both hot girls BUT when you look too much like a star from the past that can be a drawback. That is why Claudia Schiffer moved away from the Bardot look after a time.
by Anonymous | reply 290 | December 19, 2016 4:32 PM |

No, she came onto the scene as a "quirky" model with a pixie hairdo and slightly crooked teeth. She was actually compared to Romy Schneider because of the overbite. She didn't become a Kelly clone until later. Then she got a boob job and became a Sports Illustrated pinup girl. Here's what she looked like when she first came on the scene.

by Anonymous | reply 299 | December 19, 2016 11:46 PM |
I didn't know Vendela was half Turkish. Not that it makes a difference, to me anyway. She's a classic beauty.
I also didn't think Tatyana was deserving of her rank as an original 6, just repeating popular opinion. Patitz is very.. meh.
The "Trinity" IMO, Linda, Naomi and Christy were the 3 most beautiful and all around successful of all other supermodels. These 3 commanded the runways, ad campaigns and public regard as the best of the best.
Still, noone in 300 posts thought enough of Vendela to run a link to when she was THE face and muse for Elizabeth Arden? Nadjia (sp) was spellbindingly stunning, her catwalk strut in the George Michael video was a clinic in sexy.
Nastassja Kinski took way prettier photos than the one posted. Her spread in Vogue with the snake was truly something a gayling nerd had ever seen before. Those lips, those eyes..
Of course Claudia and Vendela would ultimately change their original looks, but baby, they dropped upon the scene like 2 nukes...DEVASTATING.

I still say Ypir's career could have lasted well into the 70s if it wasn't for the botched abortion she got at that project in Spanish Harlem. Yes yes, I know that all the previous abortions were starting to take a toll on her health and that all the Seconal had her nearly comatose on the weekends. But put her in a turban, slather on some rouge, and hand her a cigarette holder and a small leopard cub (or some such prop), and Ypir could still sell a garment better than any of her contemporaries. A shame, really. Definitely one of fashion's greatest losses of the 20th century.

R250 Gemma got fat after Heath Ledger died and the fashion industry dropped her. I loved her too. She was stunning.

Carlyn Murphy and Vendela looked NOTHING like Grace Kelly. The only woman who ever resembled her was the young Sharon Stone.

The real supermodels end up as magazine editors because they know the business so well...

I always liked Tatjana Patitiz's "smokey eyes". She'd be considered fat by today's modeling standards.
by Anonymous | reply 313 | December 26, 2016 4:53 PM |
Tatjana had that genetic feature/flaw of the beautiful upturned, feline eyes that don't hold up well during the aging process. Ali Larter is another stunner who comes to mind whose beauty kinda takes a hit after the early 20's.
Linda Evangelista did make me sit up and take full notice of her whenever I saw her image in print or on T.V. She smolders.

Karen Graham Has a awful nose.

Ypir was the undoubted star of a George Michael's FREEDOM '90 video.
didn't know Vendela was half Turkish.
Do you think that Ypir resented her given that they both had heritage from that troubled part of the world?
by Anonymous | reply 318 | December 26, 2016 5:17 PM |
She really was a revelation
Ypir was a revelation by not revealing.

Kim Alexis nuff said!
by Anonymous | reply 320 | December 26, 2016 5:22 PM |
Or Ypir probably resented the fact that Vendela was so fucking gorgeous, that she knocked Ypir on her not so famous ass R318.
It's just an opinion. Mine. Vendela rocked the cover of Sports Illustrated, twice. No love for her half Turkish ass on this thread that's for sure. I think DL period, for Vendela. Not one pic posted @ 300+
Vendela's Red Door perfume ads were stunning and made her a "super" model, along with her S.I. covers.

Kim Alexis
Joan Severance
Dayle Haddon -- 100% beautiful ads
Iman
Brooke Shields
All brought some very serious model perfection to their era.

Cindy was the perfect mix of fashion model and bombshell. She was THE supermodel of the 90s. She wins for me.
Followed by Naomi closely then Evangelista, Turlington, Moss, Schiffer.

For sheer beauty: Paulina and Shrimpton.
For that something undefinable but enduring: Brinkley.
For high fashion awesomeness: Linda and Naomi.
For beachy and attainable(in your dreams straight boys) hotness: Elle, Kim Alexis, Ashley Richardson and Kathy Ireland.

"Karen Graham Has a awful nose."
Nose job or was she born with that nose?

I have to admit, I also googled Ypir to see who she was.

Anyone remember Elaine Irwin and her natural all-American beauty?
by Anonymous | reply 332 | December 27, 2016 2:49 AM |
I loved Ypir, but I still blame her for starting that stupid "big hat" trend...

I love Naomi. Because she will fuck a bitch up and scared Tyra.
by Anonymous | reply 335 | December 27, 2016 4:41 AM |
Naomi looks the best now of the 80s-90s supermodels.
Has anyone caught Paulina P. on the Pop! sitcom NIGHTCAP? She plays a Czech makeup artist, and is pretty funny.

Ypir had an enchanting mix of glamour, sensuality, and class rarely seen in modern models. I know she tired of people constantly mispronouncing her name, it's pronounced ee-PEER ,in case anyone here didn't know. Fun fact, she was actually the first choice for the role of Vivian in Pretty Woman.
