Ugh - I worked there for a summer. It was hell on earth. One of the worst things was every item they made, they made it in every size. There is nothing like some brood sow coming out of the dressing room in some type of fishnet thing and you have to stand there and grin and tell them they look wonderful.
My favorite thing was some damn skirt they had imported and made to be perma-wrinkled and turns out they had been soaked in gasoline and would catch fire in the blink of an eye. We were supposed to track down anyone that had bought them with a credit card or cheque. I mostly called phone sex lines.
Even when it was booming it was an absolute train wreck.

I remember shopping in one of the Manhattan stores in the mid nineties. It really was laid back, functional and cool, back then. I wore their jeans for a long time and used to grab armfuls of basic tees and pants. Haven't set foot in one for 5 years or so.

You didn't like the Carnaby Street collection? French School Girl?

r13, I had completely forgotten about the french school girl. The store that I worked in had such an incredible shrink rate that I didn't bother really getting to know the lines. It got shut down that fall.

I was a Gap guy off and on from 1993 to 1998. I worked at a store that always took me back on breaks from college so I have fond memories of working there. Do they still use Gap Act selling technique I wonder? For some reason I remember that anytime we were suspicious of a customer stealing something we'd say Mikey Drexler (the CEO at the time) was in Zone 1, 2, 3, etc. to identify the person. It got back to Mr Drexler and we had to stop. I have bought a few things in the past year at Gap, but mostly only buy things online as I can't stand to go to the store anymore.

The men's khakis and jeans were, without exception, fucking awful. They fit like sacks, had about twice as much fabric as pants do today.
You COULD NOT SEE ANY BULGE. Those were truly dark times.

If only their product was as good as their marketing. They ruled in the 90s.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | August 12, 2015 4:51 AM |
In the 1970s they specialized in jeans, mainly Levis, Wranglers, Lee's. By the end of the 1980s they added shirts, accessories, khakis and focused on their products bearing their own brand name.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | August 12, 2015 4:54 AM |
That's right there were no Gap jeans in the 1970s, they sold all the other popular brands though.
Hard to believe but this was the first decade where everyone of all ages started wearing jeans all the time. In the 1960s, they were usually not allowed on students in public schools.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | August 12, 2015 5:03 AM |
The ONLY thing sexy about all those khaki ads are the models in them. You have t be that attractive and slim to look sexy in khakis. Any khakis.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | August 12, 2015 5:04 AM |

Remember when The Gap introduced a perfume line? I wore Grass (I'm a guy) and my female friend wore Dream. Why I wanted to walk around smelling like cut grass I'll never know but I did it for a while. I didn't get laid a lot in the nineties....
by Anonymous | reply 66 | August 12, 2015 3:17 PM |
For a mere $199.99 you can relive the experience of Gap Scents! Never really cared for this line, but they were popular at the time of introduction. I think there was Gap Body around this time as well.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | August 12, 2015 3:32 PM |
R28, are you talking about RJ Sebastian? I think he was behind the camera in this video:
by Anonymous | reply 68 | August 12, 2015 4:18 PM |
R67 Om premiered in 1996 and was a huge flop. It was gone by 2000, which is when Gap Body stores started opening.
Dream was introduced in August 1995.
I bought an Om candle off eBay a few months ago for $50. I loved the scent and still do.
Did anyone ever smell the Millennium body wash and body spray? It was for sale November 1999 to January 2000. The body wash had glitter in it as well. I LOVED that smell and it is never on eBay!!!

Remember SJPs shoe and clothing line for Steve & Barry's?
by Anonymous | reply 73 | August 12, 2015 5:51 PM |
R68, yes, RJ Sebastian is the nom de porn of the Gap Khakis model. I love the Will Kemp ads. Gap has really lost the plot on their marketing and on the clothes. The clothes have always been inconsistent in quality, but they do a much better job trying to pitch modern basics than trying to do fast fashion or trends. One of their major problems is that fast fashion didn't used to exist like it does now, but places like Zara and H and M turn over their collections much more quickly than Gap and offer more or less the same quality. Trendy is not Gap's forte.

It's Christmas In July with the festive December 2000 Gap In-Store Playlist - now on my Spotify!

Why aren’t you going to update any longer?
by Anonymous | reply 85 | July 14, 2020 11:02 PM |
I don't think there is any interest here. I'm still looking for more Gap, GapBody, GapKids and babyGap playlists from 1992 to 2006 to complete the collection I once had, but I don't think anyone on DataLounge has any.
Five years is a long time. I think there are people here who have them but have held them back because they see me as an annoyance.
The original men who shared playlists with me in 2017 all found me through my posts at DataLounge, so I am grateful for that. However, I don't think there's any ore left to tap in the mine here.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | July 14, 2020 11:16 PM |
Perhaps they died, GapPlaylistsGuy. I hope you stay on DL. I don’t find you an annoyance. You add to the multi-layered and multi-colored texture of the rug that is Datalounge.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | July 14, 2020 11:21 PM |
Since May, I have found all of the guys who worked for AEI and Muzak who created the playlists for Gap from 1992 to 2005, and only one guy had saved any. Luckily, those 6 playlists he gave me were from 1998 and 1999, completely those beloved years for me!
Unfortunately, none of the others saved their files from back then. Therefore, I must rely on other former employees who saved the playlists, which is going to be very few people, I know.
by Anonymous | reply 88 | July 14, 2020 11:25 PM |
Once this guy completes his in store playlists which seems to be his only purpose in life, he's probably going to experience a psychotic break and commit suicide but not before before taking the lives of a dozen shoppers and employees at a Gap store.

Hey Gap Guy! How are you! Hey, in September 2004, 385 kids were slaughtered in the Beslan School Massacre! Wow! I sure would love to know what was playing in GAP that month. I love GAP. And I love the GAP Playlists! Great feelings.
In February 1999 in the Alpine village of Galtür, Austria, the beautiful snow came barreling down the mountain at 290 kilometres per hour! The Galtür avalanche crushed 31 people to death, and a few of course taking a few minutes to a few hours to suffocate. I wonder what wonderful songs were playing in GAP in February 1999. I bet those dead people would have loved to be at GAP instead of buried in icy hell! So, let us know, GAP Guy!
